Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Israel und die Geister von '68: Eine
Book SynopsisThis book is a reconstruction of the hidden psychology of the 68 students' movement and its aftermath in Germany. The radical self-identification with the Jews is reconstructed as the source of a specific leftist anti-Semitism culminating in political pathologies which still determine the Zeitgeist today behind the bars.

Book SynopsisIn the 1920s and 1930s, several important Jewish institutions were established on Mount Scopus in Jerusalem: the Hebrew University, the National Jewish Library, and the Hadassa Hospital. In the Jewish community in Palestine, the Jishuw, they had a really important, but also highly symbolic meaning. As a result of the Arab-Israeli war of 1948, however, they were now on Jordanian territory. In a difficult-to-access enclave administered by the UN, they became the plaything of competing claims to sovereignty. The Jewish cultural assets located there, primarily books and other collections, slipped away from the scholars who had carefully guarded them for decades. Using these objects and their fate, Yfaat Weiss tells the story of Jerusalem after war and division in her essay.

Book SynopsisThe Yearbook of the Simon Dubnow institute for 2011 has as one of its major themes the Jewish presence in the local governments of Central Eastern Europe, particularly during the time between World War I and World War II and especially in Poland. A further theme considers matters of literary history after 1945 based on iconic texts as well as approaches determined by our knowledge of history. The general section and the other sections contain contributions on urban life in Eastern Europe, on the history of Jewish newspaper production, on the early studies of the Holocaust, on intellectual circles in the study of Judaism, and on the history of the transfer and effect of continental theories in America.

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Jahrbuch des Simon-Dubnow-Instituts / Simon
Book SynopsisThe 2013 Yearbook of the Simon Dubnow Institute is centered on two focal areas: Jewish military history and the secularization of Hebrew. Jewish military history is principally a history of the integration of the Jews into their surrounding European cultures. This section highlights questions of loyalty and citizenship. The thematic focus brings together contributions from recent research on this theme. On the one hand, imperial and national life worlds are differentiated; on the other hand, topics are explored that touch on questions of religion in the face of military demands and exigencies. The second part on the secularization of Hebrew presents essays on the transformation of Hebrew as a primarily "sacred language" anchored, until the dawn of modernity, in religious written culture. In particular, it explores secularizing impulses in the medieval and early modern era affecting the language. The papers are complemented by other articles concerned with language philosophy and literary studies. The regular and the special sections of the Yearbook contain articles on Holocaust historiography, Oriental studies, Christian Hebraic studies, the Science of Judaism (Wissenschaft des Judentums), as well as contributions examining the differing processes of appropriation, transfer and representation of everyday and historical Jewish experience in literature, poetics and theater.

Book SynopsisThe "Encyclopaedia Judaica" first appeared between 1928 and 1934. It was the result of the work of many Jewish authors, scholars and politicians from various countries, who looked at the concepts of existing encyclopedias and expanded on them. Using the history of the origins of the "Encyclopaedia Judaica" as an example, Arndt Engelhardt traces the paths of Jewish knowledge cultures in the 19th and 20th centuries. He interprets the publication of these volumes as the strategic attempt to create a new Jewish canon of the culture and science of modern times.

Book SynopsisThis study concerns David Kaufmann's "News Service" as an example of Jewish scholarly networks during the 19th century. David Kaufmann (1852--1899) was a Professor at the Rabbi Seminar in Budapest during the last third of the 19th century and was one of the major influences in the Jewish science movement, known since the 1820s as the Science of Judaism. Using as an example Kaufmann's "News Service," a correspondence network of Jewish authors and scholars, Mirjam Thulin studes the networking strategies of the Jewish scholarly community during that era. The study also provides detailed insights into the many cultural and scientific aspects contained in the history of Jewish knowledge transfer and the Science of Judaism during the 19th century.

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Mojzesz Schorr und Majer Balaban:
Book SynopsisThe study examines the life and work of the Polish-Jewish historians Mojżesz Schorr and Majer Balaban, who both were active primarily in Lvov and Warsaw during the Second Polish Republic. Against the backdrop of a then pluralistic environment of multinational and multiethnic empires caught up in change and reeling towards ultimate collapse, they developed a perspective on Jewish history combining the long tradition of Jewry in Poland with Polish general history. Both historians shared the conviction that a Jewish consciousness of history could increasingly supplant religion in a world that was in the process of secularization. For the first time, Maria Gotzen-Dold connects a broad assessment of the works by Schorr and Balaban, and subsequent studies by their pupils following in their footsteps, with findings from extensive archival research conducted in Poland and Ukraine. In doing so, she draws a picture of the expectations and perspectives arising from the decline and eventual fall of the old imperial order and its transition to cultures of history grounded in the nation state at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Book SynopsisThe 2017 edition of the Simon Dubnow Institute Yearbook encompasses two focal points: The first deals with the year 1938, an incisive year for Europe's Jews, against the background of Jewish experiences and political activities in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. On the basis of issues surrounding citizenship, minority rights, flight, and migration, this dramatic crisis is cast in a new light, with the focus placed especially on the states of Central and Eastern Europe. The second focal point takes the enduring surge in biographical research as an impetus to examine the reasons for the popularity of this genre within Jewish Studies. Using examples from current research projects on Jewish intellectuals, core issues and challenges of biographical writing are presented and discussed. The general part and the special sections of the Yearbook contain contributions on the conjunction of political and religious history, on the study of nationalism and historical semantics, as well as on Sholem Aleichem, Franz Neumann, and Ernst Grumach.

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG The Courtier and the Governor: Transformations of
Book SynopsisThe Nehemiah Memoir, the narrative of the royal cupbearer sent to rebuild Jerusalem, is central to Ezra-Nehemiahs account of Persian Judah. Yet its emphasis on one individuals efforts makes it a text that ill-fits the books story of a communal restoration. Sean Burt analyzes the nature of this curious text through the lens of genre criticism and identifies the impact of its use of genres on its early reception in Ezra-Nehemiah. Drawing upon contemporary theorists of literary genre, within the field of biblical studies and beyond, he builds an understanding of genre capable of addressing both its flexibility and its necessarily historical horizon. Burt argues that the Nehemiah Memoir makes use of two ancient genres: the novelistic court tale (e.g. Esther, Ahiqar, and others) and the official memorial, or biographical genre used across the ancient Near East by kings and other governmental officials for individual commemoration. This study contends that the narrative subtly shifts genres as it unfolds, from court tale to memorial. Nehemiah the courtier becomes Nehemiah the governor. While these genres reveal an affinity to one another, they also highlight a central contradiction in the narratives portrait of Nehemiah. Nehemiah is, like the people of Jerusalem, beholden to the whims of a foreign ruler, but he also simultaneously represents Persias power over Jerusalem. Burt concludes that the Nehemiah Memoirs combination of these two ultimately incommensurate genres can account for how the writers of Ezra-Nehemiah modified and corrected Nehemiahs problematic story to integrate it into Ezra-Nehemiahs vision of a holistic restoration enacted by a unified people.

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Imperial Visions: The Prophet and the Book of
Book SynopsisIn recent years, an interest in empire(s) has emerged in Assyriology, Old Testament/Hebrew Bible Studies and in other areas of the study of the ancient world. Collaborative research projects are devoted to questions of empire and imperialism, and the prophets of Israel and Judah and the books named after them are explored as agents in the contexts of the empires of their times. To some degree, all of this may be seen as a revival of the intense interest which the works of Oswald Spengler, Arnold Toynbee and Karl Wittfogel generated in the twentieth century, in historical situations very different from our own age. But then we too live in an age of transition characterized by insecurity and a lack of orientation and are driven to study the rise and fall of empires through the ages. The present volume, containing essays which are the fruits of the fifth meeting of the Aberdeen Prophecy Network, at the Lichtenberg-Kolleg of the University of Gottingen in October 2015, provides a distinctive perspective on prophecy in the context of empire. It is inspired by the fact that the book of Isaiah enables us to follow the vagaries of a particular prophetic tradition through five centuries under three different empires. The essays in the present volume focus on the history of composition of the constituent parts of the book of Isaiah as well as their correlations with the political and cultural histories of the empires under which they were produced. The volume thus navigates some of the key points of the history of Isaiah and the book named after him.

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Salomon Adrets Responsa als Praxis religiosen
Book SynopsisIf one understands decision-making as a social act in which certain decision alternatives are compared and these alternatives are mutually exclusive, one recognizes that a decision is always contingent and that it could therefore always turn out differently. Decisions and decisions are therefore also an impertinence. How does the decision-making practice in Responsa look like? In order to answer this question, Nicola Kramp-Seidl analyzes Salomon Adret's response with the aim of presenting the decision-making process and the visibility of the decision-making in this scholar's response as an example. The author examines when decision-making situations arise, so that inquiries are submitted to Adret, how Adret presents a decision in Responsa, which sources he uses to reduce the burden of decision-making and how he stages his subject authority.

Book SynopsisDavid Wolffsohn (1850s - 1914) was the closest assistant to Theodor Herzl and became his successor in the presidency of the World Zionist Organization in 1905. Using him as an example, this study shows how the World Zionist Organization, an internally quarelled, financially and politically uninfluential, loose affiliation in its modest beginnings finally succeeded in acting historically powerful. The study does not present a classical type of biography but an entangled history of a person and an institution, for which Meybohm chose the term "integrated biography". By combining the methodological approaches of the new cultural history, social-, political and economic history, person as well as institution will be thoroughly analyzed. The multiperspectivity also covers Wolffsohns network, which includes his colleagues, supporters and opponents. It contextualizes the Zionist organization with other contemporaneous national movements as well as international emancipation movements, such as social democracy or the international women's movement.Besides domestic and foreign politics, especially the Zionist commercial politics will be analyzed for it is as uninvestigated by recent scholarship as the life and work of Wolffsohn himself. The results of this integrated biography challenge earlier scholarship of Zionism which mostly presents a teleological reading of Zionist history based on the successful founding of the state of Israel in 1948. In contrast to this, using the example of Wolffsohn's biography, it is possible to show, that the long range success of this extraordinary project could not be forseen in the beginning.

Book SynopsisTobias Grill focuses on two groups of German Jews who were active in Eastern Europe between ca. 1839 and 1939: German rabbis and German-Jewish pedagogues. The central question is to what extent both these groups acted as cultural agents regarding the reform of traditional Eastern European-Jewish education system - one of the main realms of Jewish Enlightenment (Haskalah). Insofar, Grill studies how German Jews tried to transfer certain characteristics of the modern German-Jewish Bildungssystem to Eastern European Jewry and how reception and adoption of these elements worked.

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Singing and Suffering with the Servant: Second Isaiah as Guide for Preaching the Old Testament
Book SynopsisThe Old Testament is transformed from problem to ally when preachers attend to power at work in ancient and modern contexts by mirroring Second Isaiahs proclamation, listening to contemporary servant Israel, and learning from African American preaching in context of domination. This book analyses the impact of domination on Old Testament proclamation and thus leads to several unique contributions. Firstly, it reads Second Isaiah as a homiletic model for proclaiming older (pre-exilic) texts in response to exilic domination. Secondly, it treats the Old Testament as a rich resource for confronting racism and anti-Semitism though teaching and it introduces contemporary Christian-Jewish dialogue in Germany as a model for the Church. Lastly, it highlights preaching traditions within the African American Church as instructive for formulating an effective Old Testament preaching strategy.

Book SynopsisWere there any potential law critical motives in Jewish texts from which Paul could pursue linguistically and factually? Ines Pollmann examines this and makes the origin of Pauline law criticism historically plausible. In four texts such motives become manifest but they are usually rejected: the repression of the law in Ant. 4.145-149, the impossible fulfilment of the law in 4Esra 8.20-36, the spiritualisation of ritual laws in Philo migr. 89-93 and the posterior addition of the states law in Philo Jos. 28-31.Pollmann then demonstrates that these four motives are representative and embedded in mentality trends of Judaism. The trends within Judaism itself give evidence of general traditions of antiquity: the sophistic law criticism, the consciousness of the imperfection of the human nature, the allegorical interpretation of religious praxis and the high esteem of unspoilt origins. Paul was the first to combine these diverse motives and, as a consequence of his belief in Christ, turned them into law criticism. His attitude towards the law is ambivalent and combines the respect for the law with a criticism on the law's downside.

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Der Ort des Judischen in der katholischen
Book SynopsisThis anthology measures the importance that Israeli theology and Judaism had and still have in the individual subjects. Karl Barth has pointed out that the loss of Jewish Christianity means an irreplaceable theological and ecclesiastical loss. He points in the direction in which the book project is moving. This question has been impossible for centuries. To this day, it appears as a break with a long memory tradition that this question is chosen as the starting point for a theological disciplinary history, a story that largely resembles a discipline in Israel. Theologically, Israel has not really established itself with Paul as the permanent root of Christianity. Instead, one always encounters open or hidden forms of repressing or even replacing Israel with concepts and methods of Christian theology. Only after the Shoah and Catholic in the course of the changes of the 2nd Vatican Council did the theological starting point change. This volume asks about the reasons and the consequences, about the requirements and the meaning of this theological-ecclesiastical finding. But then you have to ask: Why was this necessary? How long has this been possible? And what changes in view of our theological knowledge? These questions guide the discipline history of theology in two ways. It is about the location of the Jewish in the individual disciplines. And it is about the discipline of the Jewish through theology. It is about repressions, replacements. It is about theologically perceiving Israel as a rejected part.
