Taylor & Francis Social Capital
Book SynopsisThe term social capital' is a way of defining the intangible resources of community, shared values and trust upon which we draw in daily life. It has achieved considerable international currency across the social sciences through the very different work of Pierre Bourdieu in France and James Coleman and Robert Putnam in the United States, and has been widely taken up within politics and sociology as an explanation for the decline in social cohesion and community values in western societies. It has also been adopted by policy makers, particularly in international governmental bodies such as the World Bank. This fully revised third edition of Social Capital provides a thorough overview of the intense and fast-moving debate surrounding this subject. New material encompasses: Social capital and the internet Social capital and the economists Changing policy understandings of social capital Social capital and resilience in tough times Table of Contents1. The Genesis of a Concept 2.The Power of Connections 3. Walk on the Dark Side 4. Is the Internet Killing Social Capital? 5. Social Capital in Policy and Practice 6. Conclusion

Taylor & Francis Ltd Identity 4vol. set
Book SynopsisA term of antique provenance, identity' has developed and cohered into a critical concept in contemporary social and cultural analysis. However, the daunting quantity (and variable quality) of the available research exploring the many, often controversial, issues attendant upon identityand the breadth and complexity of the canon on which it drawsmakes it difficult to discriminate the useful from the tendentious, superficial, and otiose. That is why this new title in the highly regarded Routledge series, Critical Concepts in Sociology, is so timely. It answers the urgent need for a wide-ranging collection to provide easy access to the key items of scholarly literature, material that is often inaccessible or scattered throughout a variety of specialist journals and books. In four volumes, this new collection addresses key theories of identity, ranging from classical accounts to postmodern, psychoanalytic, and feminist approaches. Substantive sections interrogate racial, e

Taylor & Francis Economic Development of India
Book SynopsisThe development experience of India has been a matter of much interest in recent years. India is home to a sixth of the worldâs population, and about a third of the country is acknowledged to be living below the officially determined poverty line. After more than six decades of planned economic development the levels of achievement in education and health are poor. After three and a half decades of moderate growth following Indiaâs Independence in 1947, a period characterised by centralized planning, the pace picked up in the 1980s with some opening up of the economy. It gathered further momentum after the introduction of market oriented liberalization and significant economic reforms in 1991, and in the past decade the overall growth rate of the economy has been extremely impressive. It is however important to emphasize that it is not just high growth per se but growth along with equity or distributive justice that needs to be seriously addressed. This collection presents some of the historical material on development issues in the Indian context going back about a hundred years, from Gandhiâs economic formulations to Nehruâs ideas, substantially different on issues such as the agriculture versus industry debate and the relative roles of the public and private sectors. After India gained independence in 1947 the issue of economic development assumed centre stage in national policy making. Indeed one might even say that India was the laboratory where many of the significant new hypotheses or theories on economic development have been tested.
