  • Cambridge University Press Vygotskian Perspectives on Literacy Research Constructing Meaning Through Collaborative Inquiry Learning in Doing Social Cognitive and Computational Perspectives

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe authors in this 2000 collection use Vygotsky's cultural-historical theory of human development to frame their analyses of schooling, with particular emphasis on the ways in which literacy practices are mediated by social interaction and cultural artifacts. This volume extends Vygotsky's cultural-historical theoretical framework to embrace nuances of learning and development that are influenced by culture as instantiated through the experiences of race, ethnicity, and language variation. Rather than seeking to provide definitive answers to social questions using Vygotsky's core principles, the authors wrestle with educational problems through the mediation of Vygotsky's theory. In doing so, they both sharpen their focus on the problems and speak back to Vygotsky, helping to extend the foundation of his work to address modern problems. This collection serves as a form of collaborative inquiry that itself will stimulate further consideration of these topics.Trade Review"Set[s] a new agenda for literacy research." • Cambridge University Press Making our Way through the World Human Reflexivity and Social Mobility

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisHow do we reflect upon ourselves and our concerns in relation to society, and vice versa? Human reflexivity works through 'internal conversations' using language, but also emotions, sensations and images. Most people acknowledge this 'inner-dialogue' and can report upon it. However, little research has been conducted on 'internal conversations' and how they mediate between our ultimate concerns and the social contexts we confront. In this book, Margaret Archer argues that reflexivity is progressively replacing routine action in late modernity, shaping how ordinary people make their way through the world. Using interviewees' life and work histories, she shows how 'internal conversations' guide the occupations people seek, keep or quit; their stances towards structural constraints and enablements; and their resulting patterns of social mobility.Table of ContentsIntroduction. Reflexivity: the unacknowledged condition of social life; Part I: 1. Reflexivity's biographies; 2. Reflexivity in action; 3. Reflexivity and working at social positioning; Part II: Introduction: how 'contexts' and 'concerns' shape internal conversations; 4. Communicative reflexives: working at staying-put; 5. Autonomous reflexives: upward and outward bound; 6. Meta-reflexives: moving on; Part III: 7. Internal conversations and their outworks; Conclusion. Reflexivity's future; Methodological appendix.

  • Cambridge University Press The Normal Personality A New Way of Thinking About People

Book SynopsisIn The Normal Personality, Steven Reiss argues that human beings are naturally intolerant of people who express values significantly different from their own. Reiss shows how normal motives underlie many personality and relationship problems. Reiss applies his theory of motivation to leadership, human development, relationships, and counselling.Trade Review'… In a time when children, and even household pets, swallow Prozac, Reiss revives a neglected diagnosis for worrywarts, wallflowers, daydreamers, pessimists, and eccentrics alike: normal. He broadens normality by outlining how abnormal behaviors can arise when life motives are obstructed or personal values contradicted. Reiss lists how various combinations of 16 basic desires lead to dilemmas that eventually bring people to counseling. He offers a way to manage personal problems, without cracking the medicine cabinet or the skeleton closet.' Science NewsTable of Contents1. My wife thinks something is wrong with me; 2. The sixteen basic desires; 3. Intensity of basic motivation; 4. Normal personality types; 5. Overcoming personal troubles; 6. Six reasons for adolescent underachievement; 7. • Cambridge University Press The Nature of Hate

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat is hate and why is there so much of it? How does it originate, and what can we do about it? This book opens with a discussion of how hate makes its presence felt in the real world, discussing various definitions and theories of hate. Next it describes a duplex - two-part - theory of hate. According to the first part of the theory, hate has three components: negation of intimacy, passion, and commitment. According to the second part of the theory, this structure of hate originates from stories people create about the target - that, say, a group comprises enemies of God, or monsters, or vermin, or power-crazy tyrants, or any of a number of other stories. The authors discuss hate in the context of interpersonal relationships, survey the role of propaganda in inciting hate and analyze the role of hate in instigating terrorism, massacres, and genocides.Trade Review"...compact, scholarly, and highly readable volume...The reader is presented with a diverse and compelling panorama of contexts of hate—political, historical, military, terrorist, and in personal relationships and many others. The basic conceptual perspective of The Nature of Hate is social psychological, but the focus is broad scaled. Stylistically, the book is aimed at a general audience...This book could certainly serve as a textbook for an advanced undergraduate class or graduate seminar, complemented with journal research articles. It is relatively brief...engagingly written...intriguing and insightful..." --Arthur G. Miller, PsycCRITIQUESTable of Contents1. The problem: the role of hate in the world; 2.
