Information Age Publishing Ten Years of Idiographic Science
Book SynopsisThe first volume of the Yearbook of Idiographic Science (YIS) was published on 2009. In a nutshell, the idea at the grounds of the YIS project is that idiography and nomothetic are not juxtaposed logics and that the science cannot but be both nomothetic - in the aim - and idiographic - in the modes. About thirteen years later, the sense and the direction of the YIS project envisaged in the first volume's introduction - together with the difficulties to pursue it - are still alive and valid. Thus, to both celebrate the milestone of the tenth issue and to plan the future, we asked to some colleagues, almost all contributors of previous volumes, to discuss what idiographic science means today, and what can mean tomorrow. The works they have generously provided are very instructive - each of them pictures a peculiar perspective on idiography that enables to recognize old and new challenges, thus paving the way to innovative ideas and directions.

Information Age Publishing Exploring Personhood in Contemporary Times: From
Book SynopsisWith the dawn of research into leader-behaviors, scholars differentiated between being task-oriented, which is important, and also being people-oriented. People matter. And we tend to guard against leader attitudes that treat persons as objects, as passive or inert, as instruments, as so much clay to be shaped and molded. Hannah Arendt (1958) rejected the idea that leadership is like work, in which a craftsman picks up the raw materials and the requisite tools in order to create a product according to an image in his head. No, she said, leadership is social action in which we all participate, each with his or her unique and creative spontaneity, collaborating in an erratic cascade toward the future. Leadership is something people do together. And to achieve that vision, we must acknowledge each other as persons and not as figures in a ledger or pieces on a chessboard. This volume is intended as a call to be curious about what we take for granted as individuals, educators, and leaders. In essence to ask ourselves the more difficult questions about who we are as we recognize our need for others within a community? What does it mean to be a person and to recognize another's personhood? Nathan Harter (2021) draws us into a space to dialogue with ourselves about the notion of personhood as leaders. "So, what does it mean to be a person? And what does it mean to treat someone as a person? What does anyone owe another person?" (p. 4). In what way then do leaders contend with such questions as they are becoming; becoming better leaders, becoming better individuals, becoming their sacred selves.A person-centered ethic would be universal in scope, yet adapted to local conditions that many leaders must deal with on a daily basis. Nearly every religion already addresses both what it means to become a person and what one owes a person ethically, regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, or other affiliation. Regardless if organizations deal directly with the notion of personhood, leaders deal with the workplace challenges of which the human bring him or her entire self to the unit. Hence, a comprehensive and integrate context forces us to revisit our assumptions about who exactly is a person and what they might deserve. This volume would bring those voices into conversation. In addition, we intend to complicate the question by extending similar questions into emerging areas of increasing relevance in a technological age that crosses geographic boundaries, such as online presences, corporate entities, and the prospects of Artificial Intelligence. If anything, an expanded interdisciplinary and global context makes this volume relevant and timely for leaders and leadership studies across multiple fields of study and professions.

Oxford University Press Social Dilemmas
Book SynopsisOne of the key scientific challenges is the puzzle of human cooperation. Why do people cooperate? Why do people help strangers, even sometimes at a major cost to themselves? Why do people want to punish people who violate norms and undermine collective interests? This book is inspired by the fact that social dilemmas, defined in terms of conflicts between (often short-term) self-interest and (often longer-term) collective interest, are omnipresent. The book centers on two major themes. The first theme is the theoretical understanding of human cooperation: are people indeed other-regarding? The second theme is more practical, and perhaps normative: how can cooperation be promoted? This question is at the heart of the functioning of relationships, organizations, as well as the society as a whole. In capturing the breadth and relevance of social dilemmas and psychology of human cooperation, this book is structured in three parts. The first part focuses on the definition of social dilemmasTable of ContentsPreface ; PART ONE: Introduction to Social Dilemmas ; Chapter 1: Introduction and Definition ; Chapter 2: History, Methods, and Paradigms ; PART TWO: Perspectives to Social Dilemmas ; Chapter 3: Evolutionary Perspectives ; Chapter 4: Psychological Perspectives ; Chapter 5: Cultural Perspectives ; PART THREE: Applications and Future of Social Dilemmas ; Chapter 6: Management and Organizations ; Chapter 7: Environment, Politics, Security, and Health ; Chapter 8: Prospects for the Future ; References ; Index

Oxford University Press The Union and Its Members
Book SynopsisThis work explores three key topics in social psychology: the manner in which labour unions shape organizational behaviour, a relationship which has been effectively ignored in the literature; the organization of the union itself, a fascinating test case for the organizational psychologist; and the way in which theories and methods of organizational psychology may assist labor organizations in achieving their goals. Since the union maintains unique characteristics of democracy, conflict, and voluntary participation within a larger organization, the authors offer a detailed study of a union''s dynamics, including demographic and personality predictors of membership, voting behaviour, union commitment and loyalty, the nature of participation, leadership styles, collective bargaining, among other topics. This is the first book to be published in the new Industrial and Organizational Psychology Series. It will be of interest to not only industrial and organizational psychologists in industTrade Review"The authors provide a thorough survey of the relevant academic literature and apply that body of knowledge using concepts of organizational psychology. The book substantially extends our understanding of the functions and effectiveness of labor organizations." --Choice "Provides an excellent and cogent summary of research on unions and is a reference that should find a home on the shelf of any scholar interested in employment relationships. . . . a comprehensive and provocative volume." --Judi M. Oxford University Press Inc Emotion and Adaptation
Book SynopsisLazarus offers a theory of emotion that is cognitive, motivational, and relational, a position he has pioneered over the last forty years. Clearly written and controversial, this book will appeal to both the student and professional researcher in personality, social, and clinical psychology, as well as in cognitive and development psychology. It is an ideal supplementary textbook in courses on psychology of adjustment and psychology of emotion and feeling.Trade Review"This volume is certainly the magnum opus of Lazarus' distinguished career. His landmark investigations and formulations of cognition, emotion, and motivation provide a much needed framework for social, abnormal, and clinical psychology. I have personally learned a great deal from reading this volume and recommend it to my colleagues." --Aaron T. Beck, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania "The book is a masterpiece. Novel and well-written, it contains the most thorough and thoughtful treatment of emotion presented by anyone anywhere. The concept of core relational themes is a major breakthrough in our understanding of the generation of affect. Especially important are the treatment of unconscious processes in emotion, and the discussion of the development of cognition-emotion relationships. The book is must reading for basic researcher and clinician alike." --Joseph J. Campos, Ph.D., Director of Institute of Human Development, Professor of Psychology, University of California, Berkeley "Another landmark work from the country's leading stress and coping researcher. Emotion and Adaptation is a must read by every emotion researcher. It will encourage some and irritate others, but all will find it thought-provoking." --Shelley E. Taylor, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, University of California, Los Angeles "Boldly original and insightful, this new comprehensive and controversial theory of emotion will challenge and inform the field. Beautifully written, this book is essential for students and scientists alike, for practitioners and researchers in fields as diverse as social, cognitive, developmental, personality and health psychology, as well as practitioners in psychology, psychiatry, and social work." --Paul Ekman, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, University of California, San Francisco "Lazarus' book sets forth compellingly the rich results and theoretical conclusions that come from a lifetime of research on emotion. The outlines of his 'cognitive-motivational-relational' theories are broad and sweeping, yet the detailed findings on which his views are based provide a stunning rationale for those views. It has been Lazarus' achievement to discern with remarkable acumen the interaction between cognition, motivation and cultural transactions in giving shape to our emotional lives. His espousal of concepts like appraisal and 'meaning-making' has changed the way psychologists look at emotion." --Jerome Bruner, Ph. D., Research Professor of Psychology, New York University "This latest contribution by one of our most seminal scholars addresses the formidable task of reintegrating emotion into our conceptualization of human adaptation. The results, in this volume, are remarkable. Emotion and Adaptation is both far ranging in scope and manifests the depth of Lazarus' scholarship. His reasoning is clear, the material well documented and appropriately illustrated. Equally impressive is the simplicity and even humor of his writing style. This is an edifying and important work. It will have a significant impact on our thinking." --Carl Eisdorfer, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Chairman, Department of Psychiatry, Professor of Psychology, University of Miami "Thoughtful, scholarly, provocative, with many theoretical and practical implications. A 'magnum opus' from the pen of a distinguished psychologist." --Donald Meichenbaum, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, University of Waterloo "As someone who has studied the field of emotions for over 20 years, I believe that this is the best book on emotions yet published in the field of psychology. It is must reading for any professional interested in the topic." --Dr. Edwin A. Locke, University of Maryland "An outstanding contribution from one of the foremost authorities on the psychology of emotions. . . .The author deals deftly with the complex task of attempting to define, classify and measure emotions. . . .Highly recommended." --The Newsletter of the American Institute of Stress "All in all, Lazarus has something to say about cognition and emotion, says it lucidly and with warmth, and tips us off to where the focal research should be." --Contemporary Sociology "A masterful review of an extensive literature which achieves some degree of coherence in Lazarus' hands. . . .Should provide a stimulus to research for many years to come." --Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease "This is a must-have book for academic libraries." --Choice "Truly magnificent. Lazarus presents a very carefully reasoned, penetrating perspective of the emotional process. . . . thoroughly enjoyable and required reading not only for other research investigators but for the wider audience of health practitioners." --American Journal of Psychiatry "A privilege to read. Lazarus has consistently been both thorough and interesting in the psychological questions he has addressed. He has dealth with important issues. Reading this book is a little like uncorking a fine wine which was laid down some years ago." --The Psychologist "The scholarship and integrative thought represented in the volume are highly admirable. Even emotion researchers who are close followers of Lazarus' long and productiove career those who are significantly influenced by his work are likely to learn something new from his insightful treatment of the broad set of topics that he correctly considers as relevant to the domain of emotion. Lazarus is innovative and provocative in attemoting to make his theory relational. He is quite convincing in marshalling evidence and arguments. The book is a monumental and elegent piece of work. It is replete with astute observations and insights gained from a long and productive career of research and scholarship. I feel better informed for having read this book." --Contemporary Psychology "Addresses a broad readership interested in emotion. . . . illustrated with episodes taken from novels and with anecdotes presented in the narrative. . . . inspiring. . . . arouses great interest." --European Journal of Cognitive Psychology "Pleasant and easy reading. The theory is one of the major theories of emotion of this moment. The book as such is the currently richest, most extensive and most informative of discussions of the emotion domain. It is the mature fruit of a lifetime of reflection, worth reading for those who want an understanding of the cognitive approach to emotions." --Nico H. Frijda (University of Amsterdam), Cognition and Emotion "The unique combination of a comprehensive theory with detailed descriptions of specific phenomena makes these books extremely valuable for anyone interested in emotions. Not only the quality, but the scope of [the] book is immense . . . holds over 500 exciting pages which can be easily read by every intelligent reader. . . . a,png the very few books which make you wonder whether anyone should write another book on this issue. . . . original and brilliant. . . . masterpiece. . . should be read by everyone who wants to gain some understanding of emotions." --Aaron Ben-Ze'ev (University of Haifa), History of European IdeasTable of ContentsPart I: BACKGROUND: About emotion; Issues of research, classification and measurements; Part II: THE COGNITIVE-MOTIVATIONAL-RELATIONAL THEORY: The person-environment relationship: motivation and coping; Cognition and emotion; Issues of causality; Part III: INDIVIDUAL EMOTIONS: Goal incongruent (negative) emotions; Goal congruent (positive) and problematic emotions; Part IV: EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Individual development; Social influence; Part V: PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Emotions and health; Implications for research, assessment, treatment and disease prevention; References; Index.

Book SynopsisGeorge Loewenstein is one of the pioneers of the rapidly growing field of behavioral economics. For over twenty years he has been working at the intersection of economics and psychology and is one of the few people of whom it can be said that their work is equally respected and well known within both disciplines. This book brings together a selection of his papers focusing on what he calls exotic preferences-- the disparate motives that drive human behavior. In addition to covering the history and methodology of behavioral economics, they also touch on a wide range of fascinating topics such as the motives that drive extreme athletes, our propensity to want to get unpleasant experiences out of the way so we can focus on the more pleasant, and the psychology of curiosity. There are also papers on social preferences, discussing the importance of perceptions of fairness in interpersonal interactions, intertemporal choice-- the tradeoffs between costs and benefits occurring at different poTable of ContentsIntroduction ; PART I GENERAL PERSPECTIVES, HISTORY, AND METHODS ; 1. Oxford University Press, USA The Social Science of Cinema
Book SynopsisEver since motion pictures first landed on screen, there have been many key questions that the studios and movie watchers have tried to answer. What makes a movie an Oscar winner? How does one movie become a hit and another movie flop? Why do some films earn critical acclaim while other films become critical turkeys or bombs? How do audiences perceive film? What makes a movie resonate with a viewer? Are we unduly influenced by negative behaviors on screen? These questions have spurred debates, discussions, and many theories. It first looks at the nature of prejudice and discrimination, followed by a discussion of research methods. Next come the psychological underpinnings of prejudice: the nature of stereotypes, the conditions under which stereotypes influence responses to other people, contemporary theories of prejudice, and how individualsâ values and belief systems are related to prejudice. Taylor & Francis Ltd Developing a Model of Islamic Psychology and
Book SynopsisAt a time when there is increasing need to offer psychotherapeutic approaches that accommodate clients' religious and spiritual beliefs, and acknowledge the potential for healing and growth offered by religious frameworks, this book explores psychology from an Islamic paradigm and demonstrates how Islamic understandings of human nature, the self, and the soul can inform an Islamic psychotherapy.Drawing on a qualitative, grounded theory analysis of interviews with Islamic scholars and clinicians, this unique volume distils complex religious concepts to reconcile Islamic theology with contemporary notions of psychology. Chapters offer nuanced explanations of relevant Islamic tradition and theological sources, consider how this relates to Western notions of psychotherapy and common misconceptions, and draw uniquely on first-hand data to develop a new theory of Islamic psychology. This, in turn, informs an innovative and empirically driven model of practice that translates ITrade Review"This book is both timely and meaningful as it captures the context, methodologies, and author’s reflections on the emerging field of Islamic Psychology. It is an impressive addition to the literature, and I recommend it highly for those in academia and clinical practice."-- Amber Haque, PhD, Professor of Psychology, Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, Qatar"This much anticipated book by one of the leading contemporary figures in Islamic psychology is one of the most important contributions to date on this topic. Rothman's goal of advancing an understanding of human psychology rooted in an authentic, indigenous Islamic perspective is both noble and of critical importance. His work is also a beautiful example of the continuation of the development of psychological theory and application from within the larger legacy of the Islamic intellectual tradition as well as modern psychology. To the benefit of readers, the text is imbued with insight gained from almost 20 years of clinical experience that Rothman brings to his discussion and is underpinned by his humility and sincerity, both of which come through in his writing, making this work not only scientifically rigorous, but incredibly heartfelt and accessible. This book has relevance to so many areas of inquiry and should be mandatory reading in courses on Islamic psychology and psychotherapy, courses that delve into the intersection of science, psychology and religion, or by anyone interested in this topic."-- Carrie York Al-Karam, PhD, President, Alkaram Institute, USA"This is a ground-breaking book that fills an important void in the current psychological literature and sets the ground for a much needed Islamic orientation to psychotherapy that is suited to address the psycho-spiritual issues of Muslim patients, globally. Thus far, Eurocentric models have been insufficient to meet this need, and even ‘Islamic’ adaptations of these models have served to undermine and underestimate the richness found in the Islamic intellectual tradition. Taylor & Francis Maternal Encounters
Book SynopsisWinner of the 2009 Feminist & Women''s Studies Association (UK & Ireland) Book Award! Many women find mothering a shocking experience in terms of the extremity of feelings it provokes, and the profound changes it seems to prompt in identity, relationship and sense of self. However, although motherhood can catapult us into a state of internal disarray, it can also provide us with a unique chance to make ourselves anew. How then do we understand this radical potential for transformation within maternal experience? In Maternal Encounters, Lisa Baraitser takes up this question through the analysis of a series of maternal anecdotes, charting key destabilizing moments in the life of just one mother, and using these to discuss many questions that have remained resistant to theoretical analysis the possibility for a specific feminine-maternal subjectivity, relationality and reciprocity, ethics and otherness.Working across contemporary phTrade Review"A welcome addition to the Women and Psychology Series of books. ... It can be used to both teach and prompt discussions about motherhood across multiple disciplines." - Sue Child, University of Exeter, UK, in Sociology"This is an extremely unusual, subtle and important book. Lisa Baraitser produces a demanding and timely theoretical argument that presents maternity as a site for the construction of subjectivity and for the development of a new understanding of the ethics of relationality. She draws together an array of contemporary feminist, philosophical and psychoanalytic theory, whilst maintaining an authorial voice that is intensely personal, lively, accessible, humorous and humane. Maternal Encounters is a remarkable achievement." - Stephen Frosh, Birkbeck College, University of London "This is a beautifully written text, demonstrating considerable skill. Lisa Baraitser has produced a book that speaks of a scholar who is a highly original thinker, with a capacity to simultaneously craft an engaging story alongside the deft handling of complex theory." - Dr Gail Lewis, Reader in Identities and Psycho-Social Studies, Open University"A welcome addition to the Women and Psychology Series of books. ... It can be used to both teach and prompt discussions about motherhood across multiple disciplines." - Sue Child, University of Exeter, UK, in Sociology"Maternal Encounters is a bold and beautiful book. ... Baraitser is able, a generation later, to go much further than (Adrienne) Rich in staking a strong claim for the ethical and political importance of the maternal to wider understandings of the human condition ... Baraitser brilliantly employs maternal anecdote in her writing, beginning each chapter with a rich descriptive account of maternal experience, and then further interrupting the ‘academic’ text throughout the chapter with more anecdotes. ... Baraitser’s skill as a writer is dazzling, and it is, in part, this skill that enables her to produce what is one of the most affective and insightful phenomenological accounts of the maternal ever written. ... Despite its theoretical sophistication, this book manages to be incredibly lucid. It flows and is easy to follow and read. ... There are not many academic books that move their readers to tears, make them gasp in recognition or laugh out loud; I guarantee that Maternal Encounters will move you in profound ways." - Imogen Tyler, Lancaster University, UK, in Subjectivity"This is an extremely unusual, subtle and important book. Taylor & Francis Ltd (Sales) The Social Psychology of Collective Action
Book SynopsisIn recent years there has been a growth of single-issue campaigns in western democracies and a proliferation of groups attempting to exert political influence and achieve social change. In this context, it is important to consider why individuals do or don''t get involved in collective action, for example in the trade union movement and the women''s movement.Social psychologists have an important contribution to make in addressing this question. The social psychological approach directly concerns the relationship between the individual and society and a number of theories have been developed in the field, particularly by contemporary European researchers. Yet, surprisingly, there has never been, until now, a concerted attempt to bring these various strands of research together in a coherent, detailed presentation of the social psychological approach to collective action. The authors of The Social Psychology of Collective Action review and integrate a number of theories Trade Review'This volume provides the reader with a useful review of previous psychological work on motivation to activism as well as an interesting example of a multimethodological original research project. their study gives us not only a better understanding of the motivations of activists and non-activists, it can also serve as a model for similarly ambitious projects with other populations.' - David A. Taylor & Francis Inc Savoring A New Model of Positive Experience
Book SynopsisThis book is about savoring life—the capacity to attend to the joys, pleasures, and other positive feelings that we experience in our lives. The authors enhance our understanding of what savoring is and the conditions under which it occurs. Savoring provides a new theoretical model for conceptualizing and understanding the psychology of enjoyment and the processes through which people manage positive emotions. The authors review their quantitative research on savoring, as well as the research of others, and provide measurement instruments with scoring instructions for assessing and studying savoring. Authors Bryant and Veroff outline the necessary preconditions that must exist for savoring to occur and distinguish savoring from related concepts such as coping, pleasure, positive affect, emotional intelligence, flow, and meditation. The book’s lifespan perspective includes a conceptual analysis of the role of time in savoring. Taylor & Francis Inclusive Leadership The Essential LeaderFollower Relationship Applied Psychology Series
Book Synopsis This landmark book, by Edwin P. Hollander, a noted organizational social psychologist and long-time contributor to leadership research and practice, highlights the leader-follower relationship as central to effective leadership. Inclusive Leadership is a process of active followership emphasizing follower needs and expectations, with the guiding principle of Doing things with people, not to people, in a two-way influence relationship. The book provides strong theoretical and empirical guidance for leadership development and includes many of Hollanderâs key original papers. Each is updated in a chapter with his new reflective commentary, including those on Interdependence, Women and Leadership, Power and Leadership, Legitimacy, Ethical Challenges, Idiosyncrasy Credit, and Civil Liberties. Six new chapters begin with an Overview of Inclusive Leadership, identifying distinctive concepts and practices, and an Historical Background. There also are new chapters on such topics as Applications, Presidential Leadership, and College and University Leadership. It concludes with Lessons from Experience,a revealing Afterword on his career, and comprehensive Bibliography. Enriching our practical understanding of the leader-follower relationship, with many real-world examples, this book should be a basic addition to anyoneâs library on leadership. Students of leadership, management, organizational psychology and behavior, business, sociology, education, political science, and public policy, will find it informative about successful practices of Inclusive Leadership, and their applications to leadership events.Trade Review"In this book and indeed throughout his distinguished career, Hollander has "shined the bright light" on the importance of the followership in the study of human behavior. That focus, alone, makes Hollander’s book distinctive and unique. Almost single-handedly, through the force of his impeccable and creative research, he has altered, indeed transformed, our view of leadership by insisting on the study of followership. His stance and tone are just right and his writing is lovely" - Georgia Sorenson, Research Director and Founding Director, James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership, University of Maryland"I liked the presidency chapter tremendously. I was very impressed with the weaving together of the theories and research from some years ago with current issues and worries in presidential leadership." - George R. Goethals, Jepson School of Leadership Studies, University of Richmond"This book will be one of the "must have" volumes for the libraries of all serious leadership scholars and students in the field." - David Vaughn Day, University of Western Australia, Crawley"I learn more from Ed Hollander about leadership in a few pages than I learn from other leadership scholars in whole books." -Terry L. Price, Associate Dean, Jepson School of Leadership Studies, University of Richmond"Inclusive Leadership is an engaging book that will appeal to a variety of audiences...[it is] an important addition to any leadership researcher's library. Inclusive leadership is as applicable in the executive suite as it is with a crew cleaning a hotel suite; the budding shift supervisor or community leader may not have the authority or opportunity to be transformational, yet any leader at any level has the responsibility to engage their followers. Inclusive leadership is for everyman and everywoman." - The Psychological Record, Donald A. Taylor & Francis Ltd (Sales) Encountering Bigotry Befriending Projecting People in Everyday Life
Book SynopsisEncountering Bigotry examines the occurrence of emotionally fraught and socially provocative expressions, such as racism, sexism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, classism, and other forms of hatred of outgroups or others, in everyday experience. The editors categorize such remarks as projections, particular forms of perceiving oneself and others in the world. This projection allows the person to perceive emotional intensity without owning (i.e., without attributing to the self) the feeling or experiencing anxiety-producing emotions. Such projections are not pathological, they observe, but rather faulty and not beyond repair. Utilizing experiences gathered from various people and settings, and deriving theory from common psychoanalytic and Gestalt therapy, the observations and conclusions found in Encountering Bigotry are as applicable in any social context as they are in the therapeutic relationship. Table of ContentsPart I: On Mundane Projections. A Common Occurrence. Principles of Faulty Projections. Invitations to Collaborate with Projections. What Comes Up in the Invitee? What Is Happening in the Transaction? Variations in Projecting. Part II: Ways of Handling Projections. Poor Handling. The Role of Self-Hatred in Projections and Poor Handling. Three Guidelines to Good-Enough Handling. Good Handling. Two Stories. Elaboration and Reflection.
