Taylor & Francis Ltd Nationalism and Exclusion of Migrants

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe association of exclusionist and nationalist relations, termed ethnocentrism, has been previously explored within single-country contexts. Studies have shown that dispositional factors, such as social identity and personality traits, affect ethnocentric reactions and that attitudes differ between social categories. However, broader national and international explanations have been neglected in the literature. This book fills this major gap by providing a unique account of the relationship between nationalist attitudes and the exclusion of migrants across a range of European countries, the US, Canada and Australia. Drawing on a variety of comparative surveys, the authors assess whether ethnic exclusionist reactions and nationalist attitudes are indeed systematically related across countries, and whether variations in such attitudes reflect country-level as well as individual-level differences. The authors consider the multidimensionality of the concepts of nationalism and excTrade Review’The authors’ research and arguments impact multiple disciplines, help the reader understand how the peoples of today’s world interrelate with each other, and should not be ignored in any study on ethnocentrism...This is an intriguing study that is extremely well-organized and supported by strong hypotheses, experiments and results...a thought-provoking book...this book should have a lasting impact on multiple disciplines and any individual who reads it.’ Ethnic and Racial Studies ’...the separate entries are well-integrated...and collectively contribute to a coherent social-psychological theory of exclusionist attitudes...I recommend this book as a good place to start to understand the social-psychological dimensions of negative attitudes toward immigrants...’ Contemporary Sociology ’This book fills current research gaps on the issue of nationalism and social closure by...providing a comparative analysis of ethnocentrism.’ Sociological AbstractsTable of ContentsContents: Introduction, Marcel Coenders, Mérove Gijsberts, Louk Hagendoorn and Peer Scheepers. • Intersectionality and Crisis Management

Taylor & Francis Ltd Intersectionality and Crisis Management

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIntersectionality and Crisis Management: A Path to Social Equity aims to embed the social equity discourse into crisis management while exploring the potential of a new tool, the Integrative Crisis Management Model. Leaders and managers navigate a complex and networked environment of policy-making and action, frequently occurring in real time, under constant media exposure. The pervasive availability of this news on all platforms and devices produces a lingering anxiety about the inevitability of danger. Consequently, crisis affords a time-sensitive exploration of management practices and sheds a critical spotlight on deficiencies that may yield novel approaches to doing business. As the book engages contributing authors who are foremost in their field, it also includes practitioners, students, and junior scholars in a creative new discourse about equity. Bringing these diverse voices together in one volume presents a unique opportunity to generate new insights. InterTrade Review"The book, weaving together topical issues from intersections of identities, disaster resilience, healthcare, human resource management, approaches by public and non-profit organizations in crisis management, and the challenge of equity, provides evidence and interesting contemporary debates. The examples offered are timely and illustrate clearly both how and why intersectionality is a critical component of effective, equitable, and fair crisis management. This text will be a must-read for both academics and practitioners in the fields of crisis/emergency management, diversity and inclusion, social equity!" Mary E. Guy, PhD, Distinguished Professor, School of Public Affairs, University of Colorado, Denver"Resilience demands cohesive communities, interwoven social fabric, and democratic strengths. Intersectionality and Crisis Management: A Path to Social Equity provides a timely and important addition to growing interdisciplinary literature. This edited volume utilizes intersectionality to better inform crisis management in building resilient communities with specific emphasis on social equity and community vulnerabilities." Naim Kapucu, PhD, Pegasus Professor, School of Public Administration & School of Politics, Security, and International Affairs, University of Central Florida"Intersectionality and Crisis Management: A Path to Social Equity addresses important social equity issues at a time where crisis management is becoming increasingly important in public, nonprofit, and health organizations. Readers will appreciate diverse perspectives from both established and emerging scholars." Andy Crosby, PhD, Assistant Professor of Instruction, Master of Arts in Public Policy and Administration Program, Northwestern University "Intersectionality and Crisis Management: A Path to Social Equity is a timely book given unprecedented global crises such as the pandemic, economic recession, natural and environmental disasters, etc. The book provides thought-provoking discussions on how crises expose population groups to vulnerabilities and social equity challenges. A unique contribution of the book is the incorporation of an intersectional lens to expose social equity challenges because the impact of crises are felt at varying degrees by different people. The book, weaving together topical issues from intersections of identities, disaster resilience, healthcare, human resource management, approaches by public and non-profit organizations in crisis management, and the challenge of equity, provides evidence and interesting contemporary debates. Scholars and policy practitioners will find this book of interest in managing crises across social groups for building more resilient communities." Karen Johnston, PhD, Professor of Organisational Studies at the University of Portsmouth, and Associate Dean for Research and Innovation for the Faculty of Business and Law"Intersectionality and Crisis Management: A Path to Social Equity is an edited volume that utilizes intersectionality to better inform crisis management in building resilient communities with specific emphasis on social equity brings important insights into social equity issues at a time where crisis management is becoming increasingly important in public, nonprofit, and health organizations. Readers will appreciate diverse perspectives from both established and emerging scholars." Phin Xaypangna, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer, County of Ventura, California"This volume offers a much-needed examination of issues of race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and socioeconomic factors and the ways in which these issues play out in crisis management. The various treatments presented by the contributing authors offer a compelling and insightful case for intersectionality in crisis management. The examples offered are timely, and illustrate clearly both how and why intersectionality is a critical component of effective, equitable, and fair crisis management. This text will be a must-read for both academics and practitioners in the fields of crisis/emergency management, diversity and inclusion, social equity, and intersectionality. Highly recommended!" John C. Morris, PhD, Professor Auburn University"The editors insert social equity discourse into crisis management and introduce the Integrative Crisis Management Model as a new tool for managers. The editors visualize society as being in a perpetual, pervasive state of emergency and put a spotlight on public planning, risk management, and crisis management. They supply definitions for terms used in the rest of the book and issue a challenge to readers to use “a critical eye toward disrupting the status quo to create more equitable practices” (p. 3). In the last chapter, the editors explore the Integrative Crisis Management Model. When a crisis occurs, the individuals, families, and communities most affected are those needing a voice in the planning process. By adding places for intersectional processes into the Crisis Management Model, the editors hope to build a path to social equity. The contributing authors are mostly academics in US higher education. All are considered experts in their field. Each chapter covers a different sector of society, has a bibliography, and includes discussion questions." L. Hickey, Austin CollegeTable of ContentsChapter 1 – Considering intersectionality and its implications for crisis management Chapter 2 – Understanding intersectionality and vulnerable populations: A missing part in building disaster resilient communities? Taylor & Francis Ltd The Trauma of Racism

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Trauma of Racism: Lessons from the Therapeutic Encounter is a pioneering reflection on the psychology of racism and its impact on us all. With the intimacy of personal experience and depth of analytic exposition, the authors expose racism's searing effects on personal, clinical, and community interactions while providing pathways for change. This book asserts that the insights and practice of psychoanalysis, applied behind the couch and in the community, create unique opportunities for change. Essayists address racially derived mental health inequities, including distortions, projections, stereotypes, and historical tropes. The Trauma of Racism invites personal and clinical exploration of how people learn, confront, and re-learn views on race. Narratives of the loss and grief and the burdens of slavery that crisscross the African American community are present. They are complemented by those of the psychological burdens and inspired acts of personal responsTrade Review'The authors offer a fresh, invigorating, and much-needed psychoanalytic treatise on race, race relations, and racism. The contributors that they have gathered represent multiple perspectives, diverse ethnocultural backgrounds, and different nationalities. Together these highly informed and somber voices create a moving chorus of cultural anthropology, psychoanalytic metapsychology, developmental studies, community politics, and, above all, clinical praxis.'Salman Akhtar, professor of Psychiatry, Jefferson Medical College, training and supervising analyst, Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia'This remarkable new book is a long-overdue treatment of a subject that has historically been neglected in psychotherapeutic and psychoanalytic discourse. I was enlightened by the brilliant insights from colleagues who provided new ways of understanding racism and the challenges we face. Readers will learn a great deal of practical and clinical information, as well as becoming more familiar with the tragic history of racism.' Glen O. Gabbard, clinical professor of Psychiatry, Baylor College of Medicine'This book is an important and thoughtful guide to one of the more urgent questions facing psychotherapeutic practice today—how to address the individual psychological implications and effects of larger structural biases, inequities, and prejudices. The book deftly connects psychological frameworks with historical and cultural ones. It is a vital resource for clinicians and citizens seeking to understand and address legacies of historical trauma.'Jonathan M. Metzl, director, Center for Medicine, Health, and Society and Frederick B. Rentschler II endowed professor, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine'Psychoanalysis gave us multiple lenses for illuminating complex human behavior through its metapsychology of the individual. In addition, Freud, as a social and cultural theorist, gave us a quintessentially powerful means of coming face to face with the tragic view of how humans are eminently capable of treating one another. These two projects of psychoanalysis converge in The Trauma of Racism: Lessons from the Therapeutic Encounter. Here, Beverly Stoute and Michael Slevin provide a masterfully designed and edited catalogue of accounts of the trauma of distorting the individual ego and endangering generations of collective and degraded human lives in our fractured world ripped by racism and its manifold systemic pathways of racialization. All scholars committed to understanding and transforming the inner world and its external fields of reference to the outside, and in reverse, how psychologically charged external fields of reference activate inner world drama, will benefit immensely from this tome. Now, hopefully, we can teach and study race in earnest without the facile charge of being polemic.'Maurice Apprey, professor of Psychiatry, is a member of the Academy of Distinguished Educators, School of Medicine, and dean of African American Affairs, University of Virginia'This collection by Beverly Stoute and Michael Slevin is required reading for everyone practicing, supervising, or teaching the psychodynamic tradition. The authors provide the deep, subtle clinical thinking and practice wisdom on racism that until now has been lacking. But the reach of the book goes beyond clinical practice. Racism is searing. Its history shapes each of us regardless of racial identity. Its impact on the psyches of everyone in the U.S. is profound and traumatic. Anyone willing to look inward at themselves or outward at our society through the lens of racism could profit from this book. The authors’ authenticity as they share critical reflections gained through work in the therapeutic encounter is a strength of a book that is a joy to read.'Joanne Corbin, associate dean for Academic Affairs, University of Connecticut School of Social Work, former director, Smith College School for Social Work doctoral programTable of ContentsIntroduction Part 1: Historical Perspectives 1.
