    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIndia''s Imperial Formations explores the ways in which empire building occurs and consolidates through the Indian and diasporic cultural landscape where a collusion with whiteness, Hindu fundamentalism, casteism, and religious and racial bigotry are rampant, and create hegemonic imaginaries of an India that denies a democratic space of multiple Indias to coexist together. India is not only home to the world's largest film industry but also has one of the oldest media ecosystems today with a prolific output in television, radio, print, and digital media. These systems shape hearts and minds in the large nation and also have significant impact in the region as well as in the world due to India's vast diaspora population. This book argues that Indian culture industries are a crucial site to investigate constructions of Islamophobia, casteism, sinophobia, sexism, colorism and anti-Blackness. Within the work, the authorshighlight the urgent need to evaluate the complicity of Indian and diasporic cultural production in perpetuating a casual and sometimes even aggressive normalization of bigotry and discrimination towards minoritized communities. This polemical book is written by three scholars of culture, gender and postcolonial studies providing an accessible yet rigorous study of these issues.

Book SynopsisA farmhouse is being reproduced a dozen times, with slight variations, throughout a valley. Three small graves have been dug in the front garden, the middle one lying empty. A woman in a wheelchair sorts through boxes while her husband clambers around the old demolished buildings, wondering where the animals have gone. A young woman - called 'the barren one' behind her back - dreams of love, while an ageing headmaster contemplates the end of his life. At the entrance to the long dirt driveway, a car appears and pauses - pointed towards the house like a silver bullet, ticking with heat. So begins The Dream House, Craig Higginson's riveting and unforgettable novel set in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal. Written with dark wit, a stark poetic style and extraordinary tenderness, this is a story about the state of a nation and a deep meditation on memory, ageing, meaning, family, love and loss. This updated 2016 edition contains new content, with Craig Higginson exploring the background to The Dream House, his varied experiences in a farmhouse in KwaZulu-Natal and the subsequent and poignant motivations for this moving novel.Trade Review'It's here at last - the South African novel that throws off all the literary baggage of political cliche and posturing, and gives us an honest exploration of not only what it is to be human, but what it is to be South African.' - City Press

  • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Romaphobia: The Last Acceptable Form of Racism

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisBased on first-hand accounts from Roma communities, Romaphobia is an examination of the discrimination faced by one of the most persecuted groups in Europe. Well-researched and informative, it shows that this discrimination has its roots in the early history of the European nation-state, and the ways in which the landless Roma have been excluded from national communities founded upon a notion of belonging to a particular territory. Romaphobia allows us to unpick this relationship between identity and belonging, and shows the way towards the inclusion of Roma in society, providing vital insights for other marginalized communities.Trade ReviewA compelling depiction ... This is a fascinating and provocative framework from which to view the continuing, hateful prejudice directed at Roma. * Choice *Enlightened, sensitively written and always positive, this book makes a valuable contribution. * The Morning Star *McGarry provides a valuable service in directing our attention to the forces that produce this kind of discrimination. * Times Literary Supplement *A timely analysis of how fear and loathing stultifies social progress. McGarry offers an excellent examination of the mechanisms of this enduring and despicable form of racism. * Annabel Tremlett, University of Portsmouth *A beautifully written text that is both inspiring and daunting; it does not shade or minimise the numerous challenges that are facing Romani communities in Europe, but it also offers signs of agency, empowerment and hope. This book is destined to become a benchmark for a new generation of critical scholars. * Colin Clark, author of Here to Stay: the Gypsies and Travellers of Britain *McGarry skillfully explains the complex phenomenon and history of Romaphobia in contemporary Europe. He offers a thoughtful and accessible inquiry into this persistent form of racism, and a powerful critique of how it continues to be tolerated in present-day Europe. * Huub van Baar, author of The European Roma *Draws on original research to examine enduring racism against Roma communities in Europe. Essential reading for all concerned about racism and the rise of far right politics that we are witnessing across Europe today. * Imogen Tyler, author of Revolting Subjects: Social Abjection and Resistance in Neoliberal Britain *McGarrys contributes to our understanding of the root causes of inequality between Roma and non-Roma. He shows that Roma exclusion is rooted in the nation-building process in Europe and the way national identities have been constructed in relation to territory. * Iulius Rostas, Central European University *An eloquent account of one of the most troubling forms of racism still haunting the world: Romaphobia. This book examines the root causes, as well as the experiences of Roma communities in the UK and in continental Europe. * Katharine Quarmby, author of No Place to Call Home: Inside the Real Lives of Gypsies and Travellers *The strength of McGarry’s book lies in the exploration of a broader, transnational research agenda that seeks to awake Romani studies from its “splendid isolation”, leaving one with the desire to learn more about the roots of Romaphobia. * Lilla Farkas, Migration Policy Group *McGarry provides the first extensive scholarly exploration of Romaphobia and vividly outlines the magnitude of the challenge to overcome stereotypes deeply embedded in European culture. Romaphobia also addresses the relatively recent innovation of Roma people and organisations actively participating in public debates about themselves. * Martin Kovats, former Special Adviser on Roma issues to the European Commission *Table of Contents1. Romaphobia: marginalization and stigmatization in Europe 2. Strangers within the gates: territoriality and belonging 3. Roma identities: how Romaphobia distorts Roma identity 4. An expression of Romaphobia: socio-spatial segregation in Eastern Europe 5. Opre Roma! Challenging Romaphobia through Pride protests 6. • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Fire Now: Anti-Racist Scholarship in Times of Explicit Racial Violence

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisNot so long ago, many spoke of a ‘post-racial’ era, claiming that advances made by people of colour showed that racial divisions were becoming a thing of the past. But the hollowness of such claims has been exposed by the rise of Trump and Brexit, both of which have revealed deep seated white resentment, and have been attended by a resurgence in hate crime and overt racial hatred on both sides of the Atlantic. At a time when progress towards equality is not only stalling, but being actively reversed, how should anti-racist scholars respond? This collection carries on James Baldwin’s legacy of bearing witness to racial violence in its many forms. Its authors address how we got to this particular moment, arguing that it can only be truly understood by placing it within the wider historical and structural contexts that normalise racism and white supremacy. Its chapters engage with a wide range of contemporary issues and debates, from the whiteness of the recent women’s marches, to anti-racist education, to the question of Black resistance and intersectionality. Mapping out the problems we face, and the solutions we need, the book considers how anti-racist scholarship and activism can overcome the setbacks posed by the resurgence of white supremacy.Trade ReviewThis book is timely and incisive not only given the historical juncture at which we find ourselves in, but in its articulation of how we can respond to explicit racial violence. * Sociological Review *The Fire Now is an indispensable book of our times. It is urgent, it is written with love and it embodies the politics of inclusive community-building. It is is a significant contribution to British activism and scholarship and is a must-read for anyone who is affected by racism at universities and is moved to act against it. * Left of Brown *This collection is incredibly important. The essays remind you that you are not alone in this fight against injustice and oppression. I left this book feeling hopeful and revived, and pray it will have the same impact for many others. * The Book Islamist *An important book for the unpredictable and dangerous times in which we live. Now, more than ever, we need to understand the function of white supremacy and the anti-racist theories and practices to effectively combat it. * Akwugo Emejulu, Warwick University *These eloquent essays offer an inspiring landscape of resistance to white supremacy and racist violence in the age of Trump and Brexit. It belongs on the bookshelves of everyone who refuses to be silent in the face of profound injustice. * Chandra Talpade Mohanty, Syracuse University *Mobilizes the global resources of anti-racist activism and scholarship, bringing light and heat to a world desperately in need of both. The writing it contains is brilliant, timely and essential. * Fred Moten, New York University *This powerful collection captures the voices of a new generation of revolutionary writers and activists who declare “no more!” to racial injustice. The Fire Now will burn in your thoughts for as long as racism and white privilege prevail. * Heidi Safia Mirza, UCL Institute of Education (Emeritus) *A handbook for those who wish to undertake anti-racist work in resurgently racist times. By curating a timely and diverse set of critical interventions, the editors have provided an indispensable book with which to confront our current political climate. * Robbie Shilliam, Johns Hopkins University *A clarion call and a collaborative love letter, The Fire Now is a ferocious and diligent reckoning with newly energised forces of racism and white supremacy. * Yasmin Gunaratnam, Goldsmiths University of London *Table of ContentsForeword: The Heat and the Burdens of the Day - Christina Sharpe Changing our Fate in The Fire Now - Beth Kamunge, Remi Joseph-Salisbury and Azeezat Johnson Part I: Transforming Academia 1. Book SynopsisCorruption breeds corruption. If the police and courts practice corruption, then corruption seeps into society at large, from the police who think that it is fair game to assault miners protesting about their treatment, to victimising black kids simply for being black. Police have been fitting up people for years. The average citizen will shrug their shoulders, brush it aside muttering they ‘no doubt deserved it,’ without thinking of the deeper implications. However, the damage is being done, as can be seen in society today. My books explore the corruption and the potential influence of the Freemasons on the courts.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisToday, whichever party is in power, Aboriginal issues are very much part of the national agenda. No account of the nature of Australian politics, or discussion of the future of Australian society, can be complete without consideration of the Aboriginal interest. Citizens, whatever their political preferences, are learning that the Aboriginal demand for a full role in society has a profound impact on public life. In White Politics and Black Australians Scott Bennett coolly and dispassionately describes how the aspirations of Aboriginal Australians are expressed through a political system designed, first and foremost, for the white majority. Mabo, Wik, Native Title, Stolen Generation - these are just some of the issues discussed here. In a field so often characterised by rhetoric rather than analysis, here is an account which acknowledges the day-to-day reality of political contest.

Book SynopsisThe first book to unearth the Christchurch massacre’s fascist roots and examine what it represents and threatens. The massacre of more than fifty worshippers at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, shocked the world. The murders were not random. They expressed a particular ideology, one that the alleged perpetrator described as ‘fascism’. But what does fascism mean today — and what kind of threat does it pose? Jeff Sparrow traces the history of the far right, showing how fascists have adapted to the new politics of the twenty-first century. Burgeoning in dark places online, contemporary fascism exults in violence and picks its targets strategically. Today, it is Muslims; tomorrow, it will be Jews or gays or Asians. With imitative massacres already occurring around the world, Christchurch must be a wake-up call. This book makes a compelling, urgent case for a new response to an old menace.Trade Review‘This short but incisive book builds to a stirring and well-argued conclusion ... What Sparrow does so eloquently ... is overtly link fascism, historically and theoretically, with political violence.’ FOUR STARS -- Kelsey Oldham * Books + Publishing *‘With conceptual clarity and meticulous research, Jeff Sparrow has produced an indispensable guidebook to the intellectual and political sewers from which the Christchurch mass murderer emerged. Sparrow understands the role social media has played in the rebirth of fascism. He also understands that ideas matter.’ -- Robert Manne, emeritus professor of politics and vice-chancellor's fellow at La Trobe University‘This is a very good book and well worth a read.’ -- James Pierson * NB Magazine *‘Part history lesson, part detective story, part deep-dive into an online swamp, Fascists Among Us is essential reading for anyone who wants to take a stand against hate.’ -- Scott Ludlam‘Jeff Sparrow charts the ideological underpinnings of fascism with uncommon clarity, demonstrating the importance of confronting the truth rather than retreating from its horrors. Read. This. Book.’ -- Sisonke Msimang‘Lit with insight and urgency. Read it, just read it.’ -- Chloe Hooper‘This is succinct, steady writing, well-informed and organised. With the advantage of having recently completed a book on the rise of the right (Trigger Warnings), Sparrow has managed to deal with the problems associated with writing about such a sensationally awful event.’ -- Rosemary Sorensen * Daily Review *‘Sparrow’s analysis is poignant and confronting, yet avoids being voyeuristic or disrespectful.’ -- Ellen Muller * ArtsHub *‘[A]rgues that we need more information, rather than information blackouts, in response to fascist terrorism … He shows how and where fellow fascists form shadowy internet communities to foment violence against immigrants and minorities and spur dialogue on the “Optics War,” “ecofascism,” and “accelerationism” … Sparrow convincingly argues that the more we understand about the last terrorist, the better we can prevent the next one.’ * Kirkus Reviews *

Book SynopsisThis book is a comprehensive account of the nativist movement in Japan today. Naoto Higuchi uses the life histories of activists to establish that the basis of their support for the movement is their conservativism rather than social or economic stress. He reveals the logic behind the emergence of the nativist movement by highlighting its links with developments in the existing right wing and Japan's conservative powers. A common interest in historical revisionism and conflict with neighbouring countries provides a further logic that underpins the nativist movement's particular focus on "special privileges" for permanent Koreans resident in Japan. The book examines the role of the internet in the recruitment of nativist activists and in lending a veil of historical "truth" to the falsehoods concerning these special privileges. Finally, Higuchi considers the issue of voting rights for foreign residents in the context of East Asian geopolitics and increasing securitization, and warns about the dangers of not resisting securitization.Table of Contents Figures Tables Acknowledgements Prologue Introduction: Questions about Japanese-style Nativism 1. Book SynopsisSUBSTANCE OF FIRE: GENDER AND RACE IN THE COLLEGE CLASSROOM brings readers inside the four-year college experience, unfolding multiple perspectives and voices. This multi-genre book, written by college professor Claire Millikin, explores how race and gender function within the privilege of the four-year college classroom. Additional contributions are from recent graduates and current faculty, who interrogate the forces of sexism and racism from the various perspectives of gay, straight, biracial, white, African American, and Latino writers and artists. How does being a female professor differ from being a male professor? How does being a lesbian student make a difference in terms of accessing a professor's time, attention, and respect? How does having dark skin or a non-Anglo last name impact a student's freedom to pursue different majors? These and more questions are examined in THE SUBSTANCE OF FIRE. As the title suggests, race and gender are not topics "under control” in higher education but instead they are flash points, tinder, waiting just under the surface of our culture that still makes the claim of equal access to higher education even as so many lives testify to the incompleteness of this so-called equality. Gender and race can ignite, causing pain in the college setting. This book goes to the place of that fire.
