Cambridge University Press Women and Human Development
Book SynopsisNussbaum proposes a kind of feminism that is genuinely international, argues for an ethical underpinning to all thought about development planning and public policy, and dramatically moves beyond the abstractions of economists and philosophers to embed thought about justice in the concrete reality of the struggles of poor women.Trade Review'An important book. It presents a rich, nuanced argument that is both intellectually rigorous and attuned to practical dilemmas.' New York Times'This book is an important contribution to the increasing dialogue between Western and Third World feminists, and should be read by anyone interested in international development.' Susan Okin, Stanford University' … important, original, and moving … Nussbaum's book shows how philosophy can engage life, and improve it.' Cambridge University Press Beyond the Anarchical Society Grotius Colonialism and Order in World Politics LSE Monographs in International Studies
Book SynopsisEdward Keene argues that the conventional idea of an 'anarchical society' of equal and independent sovereign states is an inadequate description of order in modern world politics. International political and legal order has always been dedicated to two distinct goals: to try to promote the toleration of different ways of life, while advocating the adoption of one specific way, that it labels 'civilization'. The nineteenth-century solution to this contradiction was to restrict the promotion of civilization to the world beyond Europe. That discriminatory way of thinking has now broken down, with the result that a single, global order is supposed to apply to everyone, but opinion is still very much divided as to what the ultimate purpose of this global order should be, and how its political and legal structure should be organised.Trade Review'… an account firmly rooted in a solid theoretical knowledge of the historical discourses of international law and international political theory, and a good grasp of the realities of imperialist and colonialist politics over the last three centuries.' History of Political Thought'Beyond the Anarchical Society is a cogently written book in which the author presents his key arguments very clearly … a coherently written book that advances our understanding of how international order was organized in the non-European world. Beyond the Anarchical Society can be recommended to the historically interested reader, but also to all those who are struggling to come to terms with the many tensions in the current international order. Keene succeeds in offerinf a new and intellectually stimulating interpretation'. Cooperation and ConflictTable of ContentsIntroduction; 1. The orthodox theory of order in world politics; 2. The Grotian theory of the law of nations; 3. Colonialism, imperialism and extra-European international politics; 4. Two patterns of modern international order: toleration and civilisation; 5. Order in contemporary world politics, global but divided; Conclusion.

Cambridge University Press Uneasy Virtue Cambridge Studies in Philosophy
Book SynopsisThe predominant view of moral virtue can be traced back to Aristotle. He believed that moral virtue must involve intellectual excellence. To have moral virtue one must have practical wisdom - the ability to deliberate well and to see what is morally relevant in a given context. Julia Driver challenges this classical theory of virtue, arguing that it fails to take into account virtues which do seem to involve ignorance or epistemic defect. Some 'virtues of ignorance' are counterexamples to accounts of virtue which hold that moral virtue must involve practical wisdom. Modesty, for example, is generally considered to be a virtue even though the modest person may be making an inaccurate assessment of his or her accomplishments. Driver argues that we should abandon the highly intellectualist view of virtue and instead adopt a consequentialist perspective which holds that virtue is simply a character trait which systematically produces good consequences.Trade Review"Uneasy Virtue is required reading for those interested in virtue theory, consequentialism, and normative ethics in general. I recommend it in the warmest terms." Metaphilosophy, Leonard A. KahnTable of ContentsAcknowledgments; Introduction; 1. The Aristotelian conception of virtue; 2. The virtues of ignorance; 3. Dubious virtue psychology; 4. A consequentialist theory of virtue; 5. Virtue and the will; Conclusion; Notes; References; Index.

Cambridge University Press The Philosophy and Politics of Bruno Bauer
Book SynopsisA comprehensive study in English of Bruno Bauer, a leading Hegelian philosopher of the 1840s. Inspired by the philosophy of Hegel, Bauer led an intellectual revolution that influenced Marx and shaped modern secular humanism.Trade Review'It is the product of over a decade of sustained research and has been built, not only upon a familiarity with the current concerns of political theory, but also upon an important archival discovery which significantly alters our conception of the foundations of Bauer's thought … It will undoubtedly establish itself as the standard work in this field and should attract a readership beyond German and Hegel/Marx specialists since it is one of the few studies to apply new questions about republican thought to Hegelianism and nineteenth-century German thought.' Gareth Stedman Jones, King's College, Cambridge'… this book easily fulfils its main objective: it clearly establishes itself as the major work on Bruno Bauer in English, and as the major recent study of Bauer in any language.' History of European Ideas'… well-researched, competent study of republican themes in the pre–1848 work of Bruno Bauer … Moggach has a thorough command of the writings of Bauer, Hegel, other primary thinkers of the period, and the relevant secondary literature. … he knows intimately the events prompting particular writings by Bauer and their influence on contemporary politics and debates. Dense, albeit masterful, Moggach's analysis is necessary reading for all interested in Hegel and Hegelian studies.' CHOICE'This book represents a major contribution to our understanding of Bruno Bauer and his place amongst fellow Young Hegelians … an original and insightful interpretation of Bauer's republicanism, one that is grounded in an ethical and aesthetic critique of Hegel's late political philosophy. … The implicit premise that seems to motivate Moggach's powerful interpretation of Bauer - one which might have been more explicitly articulated - is the following: in the wake of the historical exhaustion of socialism and in a period in which the unleashing of possessive individualism on a planetary scale portends a destructiveness whose limits correspond only to the continued existence of life itself, Bauer's political philosophy presents us with a serious alternative to both of these positions.' Samir Gandesha, Simon Fraser University, Canada'Douglas Moggach's The Philosophy and Politics of Bruno Bauer is a detailed and exciting account of the life of one such priest of modernity who made it his life's work to herald the coming age of reason and freedom in view of the failed revolutions of the past. … Moggach's work is … an extremely valuable resource for those interest in late German idealism and also for those more broadly concerned with the modern project as it was advanced by figures such as Bauer.' H-Net Book ReviewTable of ContentsPreface; Introduction: 'the friend of freedom'; Part I. Foundations: Aesthetics, Ethics and Republicanism: 1. 'The idea is life': Bauer's aesthetics and political thought; 2. 'Free means ethical': idealism, history and critical theory; Part II. Judging the Old Order: 3. Cambridge University Press Minority Government and Majority Rule
Book SynopsisThrough the analysis of over 350 post war governments and using the Italian and Norwegian governments as case studies, the author shows that minority governments are, contrary to conventional thinking, neither exceptional nor unstable, but in fact are a common feature of parliamentary democracies and frequently perform as well as, or better than, majority coalitions.Trade ReviewReview of the hardback: 'This is an innovative and stimulating book that greatly strengthens our understanding of how cabinet coalitions are formed - one of the most important questions in the comparative study of democratic systems.' Minority governments in office; 5. Italy: the politics of cooperation and defection; 6. Norway: the politics of inclusion; 7. Reassessing minority governments; Appendices; Notes; References.
