John Wiley and Sons Ltd Trust and Power
Book SynopsisIn this important book, Niklas Luhmann uses his powers as an analyst of the social system to examine two of the most important concepts which hold that system together and allow it to evolve: trust and power. He criticises those theoretical accounts whose roots lie in what he refers to as ideologies – accounts which use implicit beliefs in particular conceptions of human nature to explain and predict social action in a one-dimensional way. Theories of rational choice and moralistic explanations are taken to task, as are the theories of both Marx and Habermas. Luhmann's unique scientific sociology underpins every page and enables him to highlight the potential shortcomings of these narrative approaches. Underlying this approach is the idea that ideologically-based social theory, whether critical or conservative, is unable to do justice to the complexities existing within the parameters of social systems, individuals, and the interactions between them. He aims to show instead how only a painstaking systems analysis can capture these intricacies. Although written over 40 years ago, Luhmann's complex vision of the operations of trust and power provides a wealth of insights of considerable value to scholars and students grappling with contemporary social and economic problems. The editors' introduction to this new edition and the significant revisions they have made to the translation will help to reveal the richness and clarity of this vision and its relevance to the ways that trust and power operate in today's society.Trade Review"A must-read for anyone interested in trust research in German-speaking contexts, Luhmann's ideas around trust as a mechanism of reducing complexity have also been highly influential for scholars..."Journal of Trust ResearchTable of ContentsContents Introduction: Niklas Luhmann's Sociological Enlightenment and its Realisation in Trust and Power - by Christian Morgner and Michael King Editors note on the revised translation Part 1: Trust Preface - by the author 1. Aperture Nigel Poor: The San Quentin Project
Book SynopsisThe San Quentin Project collects a largely unseen visual record of daily life inside one of America’s oldest and largest prisons, demonstrating how this archive of the state is now being used to teach visual literacy and process the experience of incarceration. In 2011, Nigel Poor—artist, educator, and cocreator of the acclaimed podcast Ear Hustle—began teaching a history of photography class through the Prison University Project at San Quentin State Prison. Neither books nor cameras were allowed into the facility, so an unorthodox course with a range of inventivemapping exercises ensued: students crafted “verbal photographs” of memories for which they had no visual documentation, and annotated iconic images from different artists. After the first semester, Poor says, “one student told me he could now see fascination everywhere in San Quentin.” When Poor received access to thousands of negatives in the prison’s archive, made by corrections officers of a former era, these images of San Quentin’s everyday occurrences soon became launchpads for her students’ keen observations. From the banal to the brutal, to distinct moments of respite, the pictures in this archive gave those who were involved in the project the opportunity to share their stories and reflections on incarceration.Trade Review“The book…challenges perceptions, in this case, of those in prison and of why but more importantly how we imprison them.” —It’s Nice That

Left Coast Press Inc Aging A-Z: Concepts Toward Emancipatory
Book SynopsisThis provocative, intellectually charged treatise serves as a concise introduction to emancipatory gerontology, examining multiple dimensions of persistent and hotly debated topics around aging, the life course, the roles of power, politics and partisanship, culture, economics, and communications. Critical perspectives are presented as definitions for reader understanding, with links to concepts of identity, knowledge construction, social networks, social movements, and inequalities. With today’s intensifying concentration of wealth and corporatization, precarity is the fate for growing numbers of the world’s population. Intersectionality as an analytic concept offers a new appreciation of how social advantage and disadvantage accumulate, and how constructions of race, ethnicity, class, ability, and gender influence aging. The book’s entries offer a bibliographic compendium, crediting the salience of early pioneering theorists and locating these within the cutting-edge of research (social, behavioral, policy, and gene–environment sciences) that currently advances our understandings of human development, trauma, and resilience. Accompanying these foundations are theories of resistance for advancing human rights and the dignity of marginalized populations.Trade Review"A central purpose of Aging A-Z is to demonstrate the pervasiveness and (often unacknowledged) impact of theory, and the need to deliberately re-engage theory with practice….The book is infused with a clear mandate for theoretically informed action, in service of social justice and emancipation. The novelty of A-Z lies in the format and features which guide readers on a path to exploring sources and implications of concepts and theories they use while understanding consequences for practice."Examples of how A-Z concepts can be aggregated and targeted for greatest relevance are demonstrated for two practice disciplines (nursing and social work) and several specific areas of study." Barbara Bowers in The GerontologistMonumental in scope, painstaking in detail, penetrating in depth and really accessible in style, this is the book to refer to for anyone interested in what aging means for society, and how much more it could mean if radically new policies were introduced by governments. Written with an enthralling vibrancy and heartfelt dedication to critical analysis, Estes and DiCarlo have performed a near miraculous feat in crafting the essential source for both newcomers to the ageing field and more experienced hands. Congratulations to them both. I could not recommend this book more strongly. Alan Walker, Professor of Social Policy & Social Gerontology, University of Sheffield (UK)The authors provide an unusual and welcomed project to infuse critical sociology and political economy to the study of gerontology. The encyclopedic entries are well written (and fun) to read. Highly creative, refreshing, and compelling. Teresa Ghilarducci, New School for Social Research, and coauthor of Rescuing Retirement: A Plan to Guarantee Retirement Security for All AmericansWhatever depth of knowledge and expertise one already possesses, and whatever perspective one brings to the study and understanding of aging, it can be guaranteed that every reader will find much that is new and provocative in Aging A-Z. For scholars, policymakers and others interested in the future possibilities of age and aging, this book’s breadth and the extensive range of concepts is both challenging and inspiring.Dale Dannefer, Selah Chamberlain Professor of Sociology, Case Western Reserve UniversityTable of ContentsPreface. Encounter Books,USA When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the
Book SynopsisCan a boy be “trapped” in a girl’s body? Can modern medicine “reassign” sex? Is our sex “assigned” to us in the first place? What is the most loving response to a person experiencing a conflicted sense of gender? What should our law say on matters of “gender identity”? When Harry Became Sally provides thoughtful answers to questions arising from our transgender moment. Drawing on the best insights from biology, psychology, and philosophy, Ryan Anderson offers a nuanced view of human embodiment, a balanced approach to public policy on gender identity, and a sober assessment of the human costs of getting human nature wrong. This book exposes the contrast between the media’s sunny depiction of gender fluidity and the often sad reality of living with gender dysphoria. It gives a voice to people who tried to “transition” by changing their bodies, and found themselves no better off. Especially troubling are the stories told by adults who were encouraged to transition as children but later regretted subjecting themselves to those drastic procedures. As Anderson shows, the most beneficial therapies focus on helping people accept themselves and live in harmony with their bodies. This understanding is vital for parents with children in schools where counselors may steer a child toward transitioning behind their backs. Everyone has something at stake in the controversies over transgender ideology, when misguided “antidiscrimination” policies allow biological men into women’s restrooms and penalize Americans who hold to the truth about human nature. Anderson offers a strategy for pushing back with principle and prudence, compassion and grace.

Hardie Grant Books Gen F'd?: How Young Australians Can Reclaim Their
Book SynopsisIn Gen F'd? economist Alison Pennington shows how the most educated generation in Australia’s history stands to be the first generation worse off than their parents, and gives young people the tools to create the change we need. This is the fifth book in The Crikey Read series from Crikey and Hardie Grant Books. Young people today are digital natives, encouraged to market their own uniqueness and success online, amid out-dated advice from parents and politicians: work hard and you’ll get ahead. But Australia's celebrated 'fair go' has disintegrated, with millions of young people stuck on the rat-wheel of insecure work and crammed into share houses paying off boomers’ mortgages. Against the backdrop of global warming and pandemic, young people have inherited a dysfunctional economy that consumes their futures. Gen F'd? plots a path forward for Australians to reactivate our democracy and create a new economy that provides hope and opportunity for all. From Crikey and Hardie Grant Books, The Crikey Read is a series that brings an unflinching and truly independent eye to the issues of the day in Australia and the world. Trade Review 'Alison is truly the economist for this generation. This book lays out how Gen F'd got here, what they can do to get out of it, and what changes Australia needs to make to ensure we all get a fair go. It will make you angry, but it will also hopefully make you determined.' – Amy Remeikis 'Pennington's Gen F'd? is packed with insights on how this generation might earn a shot at a future worth living for.' – Yanis Varoufakis ‘Gen F'd? is here, for everyone who wants some hard evidence of the structuralised economic disadvantage of young people as opposed to the fact-free self-flattery of – oh, I dunno – wage-thieves.’ – Van Badham 'A revolutionary economic roadmap for Australia’s disenfranchised youth.' – Nanci Nott, Arts Hub

Pinter & Martin Ltd. The Children's Inquiry: How the state and society
Book SynopsisDespite being least affected by the virus itself, children and young people bore the brunt of Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. When schools were closed, playgrounds taped up and play outlawed, children’s lives were closed down. The catastrophic impact on children and young people’s education, mental health, wellbeing, and life chances is becoming ever clearer, with the most disadvantaged suffering disproportionately. In May 2020 Liz Cole and Molly Kingsley founded UsForThem to advocate – in an often hostile climate – for children to be prioritised during the pandemic response. Having heard from thousands of families, and having often clashed with policymakers, they have a unique perspective on how the state’s response to the pandemic has affected our children. Here they document their shocking findings: how completely children’s health and welfare were sacrificed for that of adults; how policymakers appeared to disregard the harms they were causing; and how adults charged with protecting the young stood by and watched as children visibly struggled or slipped out of sight altogether. This dereliction of duty should haunt us for decades to come. With exclusive testimony from academics, politicians, scientists, educators, and parents, as well as former Children’s Commissioners, the book exposes the problems at the heart of policymaking which led to the systemic and ongoing betrayal of children. From public health to politics, and from media discourse to safeguarding, the authors show how children were too often used as the means to further adult interests. Ahead of the public inquiry, the authors call for an honest appraisal of what went wrong, and commitment from stakeholders to reimagine – not just recover – childhood.

Guardian Faber Publishing The Lost Decade: 2010–2020, and What Lies Ahead
Book SynopsisThe ten years from 2010 have been devastating. A decade of austerity and paralysis nurtured contempt for leaders, institutions and fellow citizens and fertilised the ground for a rebellious Brexit. It has been a decade characterised by national tragedies from Grenfell to Windrush, and food banks to the property crisis. But, as Adam Smith said, 'there's a great deal of ruin in a nation'. No truthful portrait of an era can be monochrome. Bright spots included the rise of renewable energy, lower crime rates, legalisation of same-sex marriage and the creative industries continuing to punch well above their weight in spite of cuts.In The Lost Decade, Polly Toynbee and David Walker offer the definitive survey of this most tumultuous of periods in British history and look to what lies ahead for us. This is the anatomy of a dark decade, bringing hope for better to come.

Biteback Publishing Broke: Fixing Britain's poverty crisis
Book SynopsisA dozen years into austerity, statistical warning lights are flashing to suggest a return to types of deprivation we once imagined we had consigned to history. In the decade up to the pandemic, the official count of rough sleepers and recorded malnutrition in hospital patients both doubled, while recourse to food banks rocketed by an order of magnitude. And yet it has never been statistics but rather individual human stories - from the fictionalised accounts of Dickens to the faithful reporting of Orwell and Priestley - that have seared the reality of hard times into the public imagination. In Broke, Tom Clark assembles today's masters of social reportage to go deep into the communities so often ignored by politicians, introducing us to those at the hardest end of the poverty crisis. Contributions from Jem Bartholomew, Cal Flyn, Dani Garavelli, Frances Ryan, Samira Shackle, Daniel Trilling and Jennifer Williams, and a foreword by Kerry Hudson, unflinchingly reveal the contemporary experience of cold, hunger, homelessness, disease, debt, disability, punishing work and an immigration system that makes people destitute by design. With Joel Goodman's photography bringing the characters to life, and some of the writers having had first-hand experience of the issues raised, Broke blends powerful human stories with analysis of the policies that have led us to this point - and the reforms we urgently need. Verso Books Road to Nowhere: What Silicon Valley Gets Wrong
Book SynopsisSilicon Valley wants us to believe that technology will revolutionize our cities and the ways we move around. Autonomous vehicles will make us safer, greener, and more efficient. On-demand services like Uber and Lyft will eliminate car ownership. Micromobility devices like electric scooters will be at every corner, and drones will deliver goods and services. Meanwhile visionaries like Elon Musk promise to eliminate congestion with tunnels, and Uber help with flying cars. The future of transport is frictionless, sustainable, and according to Paris Marx, a threat to our ideas of what a society should be.Road to Nowhere exposes the problems with tech's visions of the future and argues that we cannot allow ourselves to be continually distracted by technological fantasies that delay the collective solutions we already know are effective. Technological solutions to social problems and the people who propose them must be challenged if we are to build cities and transportation systems which serve the public good.In response, Paris Marx offers a vision for a more collective way of organizing transportation systems which considers the needs of poor, marginalized, and vulnerable peoples. The book also argues that rethinking mobility can be the first step in a broader reimagining of how we organize our social, economic, and political systems to serve the many, not the few.Trade ReviewThe last decade has been a trainwreck for Silicon Valley's dreams of mobility. Paris Marx's invaluable new book explains how and why big tech's utopian transit projects crashed and burned, why these disasters will keep finding funding if they are not opposed, and what the alternative might look like. The path to a better, more equitable future of transit begins with the Road to Nowhere. -- Brian Merchant, author of The One DeviceA lively summary of the ways Big Tech has distracted us from the urgent task of making our cities work for everyone. -- Jarrett Walker, author of Human TransitAn astute and engaging critique of Silicon Valley's visions for transportation, Marx highlights the problems of technology being driven by the needs of capital and crafts a compelling vision of a world where technology is instead used to deliver social good -- Wendy Liu, author of Abolish Silicon ValleyDraws a compelling picture of the evolution of the Western vision of mobility. -- Konrad Bleyer-Simon * Green European Journal *I recommend Road to Nowhere not only for what it says about transport, but for its approach to technologies more generally ... Taylor & Francis Ltd Doing Justice to Young People: Youth Crime and
Book SynopsisThere is an impasse in current thinking about youth crime and justice, represented by punitive and harmful practices, and liberal objections to these processes on the other, based predominantly on arguments for ‘rehabilitation’. This book aims to arrive at an alternative strategy for resolving the tensions between young people – especially those on and beyond the margins – and the social world which frames their lives. The book is split into three sections: Part 1 focuses on young people, their attitudes and behaviour; Part 2 considers the way in which their behaviour is constructed as criminal and then addressed; Part 3 considers the limitations of current practices and potential alternatives. Within this broad framework, the differentiated and contested nature of young people’s experiences and our (and their) ideas of ‘youth’ can be counterposed to prevailing one-sided and often discriminatory assumptions about them; in order then to open up questions about the nature and purposes of the youth justice system, and to introduce some possibilities for reconstructing it according to fundamental principles of rights, welfare and social justice.Doing Justice to Young People will be essential reading for anybody working in or studying youth crime and youth justice.Table of ContentsPart 1: Young People and Crime 1. It brings together work and ideas from a diverse array of researchers from around the world and examines the affects and effects of diverse sexual encounters in tourism, romance tourism, sex tourism and sexual exploitation in tourism – including the sexual exploitation of children in travel and tourism, and sexual harassment. It will be of interest to students and researchers of tourism impacts, tourist behaviour, hospitality management, destination management and development.Trade ReviewNeil Carr and Liza Berdychevsky deserve all accolades for editing a book that focuses on the nexus between sex and tourism, openly illuminating its light and dark sides. The Indigo Press Chauvo-Feminism: On Sex, Power and #MeToo
Book SynopsisEverybody knows a Chauvo-Feminist… The 2017 #MeToo movement was a flagship moment, a time which empowered women to share their stories of sexual harassment and abuse in a spirit of solidarity and in demand of change. But have some men simply changed tactics? Acclaimed author Sam Mills investigates the phenomenon of the chauvo-feminist, the man whose public feminism works to advance his career, whilst his private self exhibits age-old chauvinistic tactics. Through testimonies and her own experience, Mills examines the psychological underpinnings of the chauvo-feminist, exploring questions of modern relationships, consent, and emotional abuse and asks how we might move beyond ‘trial by Twitter’ to encourage an honest and productive dialogue between men and women. Sam Mills is the author of numerous books, including The Quiddity of Will Self (Corsair, 2013), and recent memoir of love, madness and caring The Fragments of My Father (Fourth Estate, 2020).Trade Review‘A crucial addition to the canon of contemporary feminist writing.’ https://twitter.com/PressIndigoThe/status/1490641481035657217?s=20&t=QX9RwJ7OQmiV7UZPigpBwA -- Robert Greer * The Idler *Featured in ‘New Year’s Read-olutions: What we’re looking forward to in 2021’ -- Bumper Christmas Issue * The Indie Insider Newsletter *Books of the month: From Daisy Buchanan’s Insatiable to Nikesh Shukla’s Brown Baby ‘Sam Mills explores the phenomenon of the sneaky modern males who claim feminist credientials to advance their interests while, in reality, being “abusive men hiding in plain sight”’ https://www.independent.co.uk/independentpremium/culture/book-releases-february-daisy-buchanan-insatiable-patricia-lockwood-maxwell-b1793470.html -- Martin Chilton * The Independent *‘The style is elegant, learning worn lightly & I’m grateful, too, for its articulation & summation of familiar but devastating experience.’ https://twitter.com/BookwormVaught/status/1356890983577878529 -- Anna Vaught * Twitter *‘Review: Chauvo-Feminism' ‘I finished this book feeling a little bit stronger for being both heard and seen. C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd Gunpoint Capitalism
Book SynopsisOn 11 September 2012, over 250 workers of Ali Enterprises, which produced jeans for the German discount retailer KiK, perished in a fire in their Karachi factory. Was this an accident or an arson attack? Straight away, the tragedy gave rise to contradictory interpretations. While some blamed the exploitative logics of fast fashion, others suspected foul play by the political parties preying on the city and its business class.Taking as a starting point the controversy caused by this disaster, Gunpoint Capitalism plunges us into the murky waters of globalisation. Exploring the back alleys of Pakistan''s industrial capital city, it shows how the manufacturing economy makes order out of disorder, and profit out of conflict--to the detriment of workers. In Karachi, as elsewhere, petty criminals and ex-servicemen prove to be formidable enforcers of economic order. A comparison with Europe, the United States and Latin America confirms the central place of such henchmen in the dynamics of capitalism. These shock troops of anti-unionism are now participating in the dismantling of the social state. This probing, sometimes shocking, book sheds new light on the power structures, organised violence and daily labour struggles underpinning the production of our consumer goods.

RIBA Publishing RIBA Ethical Practice Guide
Book SynopsisThe climate and biodiversity emergency, the Grenfell Tower tragedy, and rising inequality all serve as reminders of the ethical responsibilities of the architect, and the importance of ethical decision-making. Ethical practice is a core competence for architects, which means it is vital that students and professionals develop a fundamental awareness and understanding of ethics. This guide is designed to improve the industry’s grasp of ethical practice as it relates to the wider world, society, clients, the workplace, the profession, and the individual. Aimed at architects, but relevant to built environment practitioners more generally, each chapter introduces an ethical duty, setting out the relevant legal, regulatory, and professional context before exploring the detailed subject matter and key principles. It includes an ethical dilemma for each duty and views and experiences from across the profession. Also delving into issues such as equity, diversity and inclusion, social value, wellbeing, and integrity, it does not seek out ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers. Rather it encourages reflection on core values and possible consequences to encourage balanced and reasoned positions. While ethical practice is invaluable in itself, it is also critical for establishing trust with clients, improving transparency and enhancing reputation. It can act as a magnet for the attraction and retention of high-quality staff. Contributing positively to the avoidance of disputes, it can also provide a level of accountability that is beneficial both to the industry and wider society. Including contributions from: Neal Shasore, Farhana Yamin, Justin Bere, Jan Kattein, Darius Jenner Pullinger, Virginia Newman, Dhruv Sookhoo and Ben Channon.Table of ContentsIntro: Ethics in practice - History & definitions - Ethics not morals - Ethics and culture - Virtue Ethics / Social Contract Ethics / Duty Ethics / Utilitarian Ethics - Defining behaviours - Codes, Regulations, Sanctions and Best Practice - The Public Interest - How it is defined and who is responsible - Professional ethics - Recognising an ethical issue - Ethical processes and techniques - Whistleblowing - The 6 duties Chapter 1 – Duty to the Wider World - Legal obligations - The Codes of Conduct and Practice - The Climate and Biodiversity emergency - Sustainable and Regenerative design (mitigation / adaptation) - Supply Chains and Resource Use - Rights of Nature - Whole life performance - Net Zero - Openness & transparency - Tools & techniques - Dilemma – Challenging the brief Chapter 2 – Duty to Society and the End User - Legal obligations (tort & company law) - Building Regs, Housing Standards and Planning Policy - The Codes of Conduct and Practice - Specification - Health and safety - Bribery & corruption - Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (including bias & discrimination) - Stakeholder Identification and Engagement - Social Value and Social Responsibility (including link to sustainable development and including embedding throughout organisation) - Regeneration - Evidence-informed design - Inclusive design and inclusive environments - Wellbeing - Accuracy & truthfulness - Rights of Future Generations - Tools & techniques - Dilemma - Affordable housing provision Chapter 3 – Duty to those Commissioning Services - Legal obligations - The Codes of Conduct and Practice - The client relationship - Conflicts of interest - Competence and diligence - Lay clients - Experienced private clients - Public Sector clients - Confidentiality - Time, cost, quality - Communication and complaints - Stewardship and aftercare - Learning and improvement - Tools & techniques - Dilemma - Client’s best interest - Chapter 4 – Duty to those in the workplace - Legal obligations - The Codes of Conduct and Practice - Company culture - Respecting colleagues - Managing practice and work environment - Training and development - Health, safety and wellbeing - Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (including the RIBA EDI Policy Guide) - Modern Slavery - Tools & techniques - Dilemma – Workplace Chapter 5 – Duty to the Profession - The Codes of Conduct and Practice - Reputation & Value - Respecting previous appointments - Copyright & Credit - Whistleblowing and disclosure - Knowledge sharing - Research, Data Ethics, POE & Building Performance - Contributing to and representing the profession - Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (including the RIBA Inclusion Charter) - Tools & techniques - Dilemma - A competition Chapter 6 – Duty to Oneself - The Codes of Conduct and Practice - Principles and values - Competence - Accountability - Continuing Professional Development - Evaluation, reflection and positionality - Pro Bono work - Bribery & corruption - Tools & techniques - Dilemma - A conflict of interest Conclusion – Resolving Ethical Issues - Core values - Decision making - Lifelong learning - Independence - Leadership - Advocacy - Resources and toolkits - Reviews and feedback

Perspectiva The Politics of Waking Up: Power and Possibility
Book SynopsisEveryone thinks they know what it means to be 'woke' - whether they're proudly declaring it, or angrily attacking it. But writer, political entrepreneur and psychosocial therapist Indra Adnan has written a comprehensive and necessary account of 'waking up' - to the realities of climate crisis, social breakdown, and personal agency - which implicates us all. In the internet era, no one escapes the global revolution of learning, connecting and mobilising and its entangled consequences. This reality demands a political response. But our current politics - led by squabbling parties and their exhausted ideologies - are clearly broken and dysfunctional. Only 2% of the UK electorate think it's worth the time or money to join a political party. How do we put the full spectrum of a consciously awakening humanity at the heart of society, economy and politics? As social bonds fray and the planet burns, a politics of 'waking up' is more urgently required than ever. Informed by decades of public advocacy, transformative work with both local and global communities, as well as her lifelong commitment to inner wisdom, The Politics of Waking Up lays out Adnan's practical, beautiful and urgent ways to redesign politics for an era of people power. Drawing on her years of political entrepreneurship as co-initiator of The Alternative UK, Adnan shares a compelling vision of a 'fractal' politics with an emphasis on new patterns of behaviour and viable prototypes of social progress that can be copied and replicated everywhere. She presents a coherent and radical alternative to our current socio-political turbulence. One that is there for the taking.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Mathematics to the Rescue of Democracy: What does
Book SynopsisThis book explains, in a straightforward way, the foundations upon which electoral techniques are based in order to shed new light on what we actually do when we vote. The intention is to highlight the fact that no matter how an electoral system has been designed, and regardless of the intentions of those who devised the system, there will be goals that are impossible to achieve but also opportunities for improving the situation in an informed way. While detailed descriptions of electoral systems are not provided, many references are made to current or past situations, both as examples and to underline particular problems and shortcomings. In addition, a new voting method that avoids the many paradoxes of voting theory is described in detail. While some knowledge of mathematics is required in order to gain the most from the book, every effort has been made to ensure that the subject matter is easily accessible for non-mathematicians, too. In short, this is a book for anyone who wants to understand the meaning of voting. Trade Review“Paolo Serafini has the merit of presenting in a synthetic and pedagogical way the main aspects of the voting theory. This book would be well suited for undergraduate and graduate students who are new to voting theory … . the book is very enjoyable to read … . The present book adds its stone to the series of books on voting theory while distinguishing itself by its pedagogy and simplicity.” (Eric Kamwa, Journal of Economics, Vol. 134, 2021)“This book exposes a variety of social choice systems … . The electoral rules for the formation of the government of several countries are discussed, as examples of application of different aggregation methods, their particular problems and shortcomings are highlighted and opportunities of improvement underlined.” (Annibal Parracho Sant’Anna, zbMATH 1476.91002, 2022)Table of Contents

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Urban Inequality and Segregation in Europe and
Book SynopsisThis open access book explores new research directions in social inequality and urban segregation. With the goal of fostering an ongoing dialogue between scholars in Europe and China, it brings together an impressive team of international researchers to shed light on the entwined processes of inequality and segregation, and the implications for urban development. Through a rich collection of empirical studies at the city, regional and national levels, the book explores the impact of migration on cities, the related problems of social and spatial segregation, and the ramifications for policy reform. While the literature on both segregation and inequality has traditionally been dominated by European and North American studies, there is growing interest in these issues in the Chinese context. Economic liberalization, rapid industrial restructuring, the enormous growth of cities, and internal migration, have all reshaped the country profoundly. What have we learned from the European and North American experience of segregation and inequality, and what insights can be gleaned to inform the bourgeoning interest in these issues in the Chinese context? How is China different, both in terms of the nature and the consequences of segregation inequality, and what are the implications for future research and policy? Given the continued rise of China’s significance in the world, and its recent declaration of war on poverty, this book offers a timely contribution to scholarship, identifying the core insights to be learned from existing research, and providing important guidance on future directions for policy makers and researchers. Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Part I: Lessons from Europe.- Re-theorising spatial segregation: A European perspective.- Income inequality and residential segregation in European cities.- The role of migration costs in residential sorting.- Part II: Urban inequality and segregation in China.- Research on residential segregation in Chinese cities.- Urbanisation, migration and the anti-poverty programme in China.- Urban villages, their redevelopment and implications for inequality and integration.- Renovation of Shantytowns and construction of new communities.- Public service provision in China: Towards a more equal access system.- Housing policies for rural migrant workers in China.- Part III: Future directions for research and policy.- Multi-scale inequality and segregation: Theory and estimation.- Characterising social integration between rural migrants and local residents in urban China.- Social frontiers: Estimating the spatial boundaries between residential groups and their impacts on crime.- Deprivation indices in China: Establishing principles for application and interpretation.- Future directions for research on residential segregation and inequality in China.

Book SynopsisNow a Washington Post Bestseller.During the 2016 presidential campaign, Donald J. Trump proclaimed, “The American Dream is dead,” a message that resonated across the country. Washington Examiner editor Timothy Carney traveled Middle America, pored over county-level maps and data, and sorted through sociological studies, and had a startling revelation: Donald Trump is right, but the death of the American Dream is a social phenomenon, not an economic one.In some parts of the United States, life seems to be getting worse because citizens are facing their problems alone. These communities have seen declines in marriage, voting, church attendance, and volunteer work. Even when money comes back to town, happiness does not return if people there do not reengage. The educated and wealthy elites, on the other hand, tend to live in places where institutions are strong, or have enough money to insulate themselves.Carney visits all corn

MIT Press How Change Happens The MIT Press
Book SynopsisAn “illuminating” study that reveals the different ways social change occurs—for readers of Freakonomics and Thinking, Fast and Slow (The New York Times) How does social change happen? When do social movements take off? Sexual harassment was once something that women had to endure; now a movement has risen up against it. White nationalist sentiments, on the other hand, were largely kept out of mainstream discourse; now there is no shortage of media outlets for them. In this book, with the help of behavioral economics, psychology, and other fields, Cass Sunstein casts a bright new light on how change happens. Sunstein focuses on the crucial role of social norms—and on their frequent collapse. When norms lead people to silence themselves, even an unpopular status quo can persist. Then one day, someone challenges the norm—a child who exclaims that the emperor has no clothes; a woman who says “me too.” So

Book SynopsisWe live in a world in crisis. Societies are becoming fractured, opinions polarized and people are increasingly isolated. In an attempt to seek out human connection, many people spend more time at work than they do with family members, yet few of us have someone at work who we trust enough to share our vulnerabilities. To be human is to suffer, yet our struggles can remain hidden from work. This book argues that compassion is a core human value, which is too often overlooked in business. In these challenging and unprecedented times, workplaces have a crucial role to play in fostering kindness, care and understanding for one another as human beings. Based on a decade of research and packed with examples and case studies, this book argues that compassion is the hidden key to business performance in the 21st century.
