Taylor & Francis Ltd Motherhood Childhood and Parenting in an Age of
Book SynopsisMotherhood, as a celebrated yet underappreciated role, is often thought of as a natural process, something instinctive that we refine by watching our own mothers and others in our community. We rarely think of motherhood as something that is time and culturally specific, yet, like culture itself, it is socially constructed, and both motherhood and childhood evolve over time. With the rise in educational attainment of mothers in the American population, the expectations associated with childhood increasingly include not just education but cognitive development and extracurricular activities as the partnership between parents and education intensifies in the joint project of human development of children. Motherhood, Childhood, and Parenting in an Age of Education offers a new way to conceptualize the high demands of contemporary parenthood. It traces the emerging narrative about the good mother, changes in the underlying assumptions of what constitutes the good mother, Trade Review"What makes this an important contribution is that it links changes in the wider society (and even the world as in the world educational revolution) to changes in what constitutes the good mother without pretending that we now know what constitutes good motherhood. That is, the book avoids essentialist traps and pretentious universal application claims while still showing how consequential the models of the good mother have become for mothers, children, and their societies. This will be a salient text for students, teachers, and researchers for years to come."–Francisco O. Ramirez, Professor of Sociology, Stanford University"Reading this book changes the way you think about how education has transformed motherhood and childhood over the past century, including the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. Schaub’s compelling analysis is full of insights, creatively contrasting everyday notions and academic arguments with a wealth of evidence embedded in an accessible, engaging narrative of shifting intergenerational relationships. An important sociological contribution, it unmasks how the ever-tighter intersection between schooling and the family influences roles, expectations, and identities of childhood and parenthood everywhere." –Justin J.W. Powell, University of Luxembourg"The worldwide explosion of education has dramatically impacted parenting -- and motherhood in particular. Dr. Schaub impressively analyzes this transformation, based on her own research, the wider literature, and her own personal reflections. This unique book will be of great interest to those concerned with modern familial and educational arrangements".John W. Taylor & Francis Ltd SelfDeclaration in the Legal Recognition of Gender
Self-Declaration in the Legal Recognition of Gender examines the impact of legislation premised upon the principle of self-declaration' of legal gender status. Existing doctrinal and comparative analyses have tended to come out strongly in favour of, or against, self-declaration. This book offers a socio-legal alternative which focuses on how self-declaration is experienced, on an embodied level, by trans and gender diverse people. It presents research conducted in Denmark, which became the first European state to adopt self-declaration in June 2014. By analysing Danish law through a Foucauldian framework which brings together socio-, feminist, and trans legal scholarship on embodiment and jurisdiction, the book offers the first empirically based and theoretically informed analysis of self-declaration. It draws upon legal consciousness, affect theory, vulnerability, and governmentality literatures to argue that the jurisdictional boundaries which existed between law

Taylor & Francis Ltd The Routledge International Handbook to Welfare State Systems
Book SynopsisDeveloping countries may not have full-fledged welfare states like those we find in Europe, but certainly they have welfare state systems. For comparative social policy research, the term welfare state systems has many advantages, as there are numerous different types/models of welfare state systems around the world. This revised and expanded second edition brings together leading experts to discuss social policy in 32 countries/regions around the world: from the most advanced welfare state systems in Scandinavia and Western Central Europe to the developing powers of Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and Russia. Country-specific chapters provide in general a historical overview, discuss major characteristics of the welfare state system, and analyze country-specific problems, as well as critical current and future trends for further discussions, while also providing one (additional) major focal point/issue for greater in-depth analysis. Including new countTrade ReviewIn light of, and being complementary to, the recently published book Ten Worlds of Welfare Capitalism, Aspalter and his authors provide a strong in-depth analysis of 32 welfare state systems across the entire world, also within the framework of the descriptive Ten Worlds Theory and the normative Developmental Social Policy Theory. His collected expert chapters encompass Australia, the United States, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, North Asia, South Asia and East Asia, literally all continents and most corners of the world. Despite the great number of welfare regimes covered, welfare state systems across the nations presented are fully and deeply analyzed in all their complexities and diversities, covering a most-extensive range of social policy sub-fields, topics and issues. Taylor & Francis Ltd Shifting Categories of Work
What do human beings do when they work, how is work organized, and what are its multidimensional economic, social, political, biographical, ecological effects? We cannot answer these questions without drawing on the numerous categories that we use to describe work, such as skilled or unskilled work, domestic work or wage labor, gig work or platform work. Such categories are not merely theoretical labels as they also have practical effects. But where do these categories come from, what are their histories, how do they differ between countries, and how are they evolving? Shifting Categories of Work asks these questions, illuminating the many ways in which our societies categorize work. Written by sociologists, philosophers, historians and anthropologists as well as management and legal scholars, the contributions in this volume contrast different cultural practices and frameworks of categorizing work across different countries. Organized around the three axes of (un)or

Taylor & Francis Ltd Happiness
Book SynopsisThis fully revised and updated edition of Happiness provides an accessible introduction to the concept of happiness and how it can be applied to public policy in order to help citizens achieve the good life.Countries around the globe want to ensure the best for their citizens. They want them to be happy, have a good life and improve their well-being. It follows that, whilst happiness is based upon individuals' subjective perception of their own situation, it is important to understand the concept of happiness in order to form policies that might help individuals to achieve what they believe will make them happier. Applying approaches from disciplines across the social sciences, this book explores varying notions of happiness and how these can be applied to create a theoretical understanding of happiness as a concept. The book then demonstrates how the concept of happiness can be used to analyse social policy in welfare states in areas including work, health and migratiTrade ReviewThe theme of ‘happiness’ is now studied in so many directions that broad-based introductions are most welcome. Greve’s book in its second edition fulfils the task admirably, by referring to philosophy, psychology, economics, and above all to sociology. In a concise and updated manner, it briefly addresses all relevant points of the topic, from the meaning of happiness to its measurement, from the sources of the relevant data to its correlated variables, from the arguments for and against the policies for happiness. Interesting are the links of happiness with pollution, living places, migration and welfare, distinguishing, in particular, among countries with different welfare regimes. Finally, it presents useful suggestions for building a comprehensive index that includes social development and its sustainability. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Inheritance of Inequality
Book SynopsisOriginally published in 1980 at a time when the discipline of sociology was still relatively young in Australia, The Inheritance of Inequality is an important contribution to the study of social mobility in Australia. The book is based on findings from a survey of nearly 5,000 Australians who were interviewed about their family backgrounds and occupational careers. In its scope and sample size, the survey was unique among non-governmental Australian studies. It went beyond the findings of earlier surveys, giving broader understanding of social mobility and stratification. The book sets out the processes by which Australians have found their place in the world of work in the 20th Century. Factors tending to enhance or frustrate attainment are identified and the degree to which Australia is an egalitarian society is assessed.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Economic Equality in the CoOperative Commonwealth
Book SynopsisOriginally published in 1933 in the midst of the Great Depression, this book discussed the possibility of a new and orderly economic system to realize social justice. The author argued that nothing but the complete equality of reward could ensure a stable order. Although utopian in its outlook, the book addressed many of the concerns of the (then) existing order. The book explains the origin of differences between different people, give a brief account of the economic theory of the capitalist system and investigates the economics of the growing demand for social and economic equality. It then discusses in more detail the most efficient economic organization to provide and safeguard the welfare of the population on the basis of equality, followed by a discussion of the economic principles involved in price-fixing and foreign trade.

Taylor & Francis Ltd MiddleClass Couples
Book SynopsisWhen this book was originally published in 1980, sociologists had long held the view that the middle-class marriage in contemporary Britain was characterised by role desegregation and marital equality. Middle-Class Couples reported on research which provided a critical re-analysis of this orthodoxy. The book is a theoretically informed, empirical study which largely debunks many of the myths associated with this alleged movement towards equal marriage' among professional couples. The author analysed the sexual division of labour among a group of professional workers and their wives at the child-rearing stage of their family cycle. The research paid special attention to the notion of marital equality and the power dimension of marriage, the household division of labour and the patterning of leisure between husbands and wives. A radical critique of the existing social theories of the family and society incorporated in the classic studies of Parsons, Watson, Young and Willmott,

Taylor & Francis Ltd The Survivors
Book SynopsisFirst published in 1980, The Survivors is a detailed and original study of the experiences of homeless young people in central London. The book is based on in-depth interviews with 107 newcomers', who were selected at two nightshelters and a government reception centre. Their views and experiences are recorded, their backgrounds described and their reasons for coming to London examined. We learn how they coped with the interventions of both those who want to hinder and those who want to help, and how in general they survived and sometimes even enjoyed themselves in an extreme environment. The authors also examine the ways in which the various helping agencies view the problem'. They claim that the agencies tend to present a pessimistic picture one that understates the resilience and resourcefulness of these young people, dismisses their spirit of their adventure, and concentrates almost exclusively on the dangers, difficulties and hardships. Book SynopsisThis book offers a common set of concepts to help make sense of online shaming practices, accounting for instances of discrimination and injury that morally divide readers and at times risk unjust and disproportionate harm to those under scrutiny.Digital media denunciation has become a primary form of expression and entertainment across media environments, with new socially desirable forms of accountability under movements such as #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter addressing longstanding forms of systematic and interpersonal abuse. Taylor & Francis Ltd Youth Risk Routine
Book SynopsisYoung people's lives continue to be the topic of public scrutiny and recurring moral panics'. Smoking cannabis, speeding, and engaging in street-level fights are depicted as activities based on poor choices' or simple hedonism, putting young people's futures at risk. Based on comprehensive, qualitative research with young people in Denmark, this book illustrates how such individualised accounts miss out on the inherently social character of risk-taking activities.Youth, Risk, Routine introduces a new approach to risk-taking activities as being an integral and routinised part of young people's everyday life. By applying social theories of practice, this insightful volume presents a framework for understanding the routinised dimensions of young people's engagement in risk-taking and how this is embedded in, intertwined with, and held in place by other everyday practices. Indeed, through extensive empirical analyses of the rich material at hand, the authors explore how roTrade ReviewThis is an important, thoughtful, and original new research monograph about young people and risk. It deserves a wide audience amongst researchers, lecturers, and students; not only is it useful and accessible, it is ambitious and innovative. The authors have combined their own, separate research studies to provide a compelling, expansive, and coherent new approach to understanding young people’s risk-taking practices. Young people are often said to be at risk, or to pose risks to others. Risk is an influential concept in youth research, theory, and policy but it is also complicated, contested, and multi-faceted and used in quite different ways. Bengtsson and Ravn lead us away from individualised, positivistic, normative, choice-heavy, moral-panic infused understandings of risk to a theory that prioritises young people’s shared understandings and their routinized, embodied, socially-contextualised everyday practices. Practices of risk in respect of alcohol and drug use, speeding in motor vehicles, offending, youth culture, violence, partying, and so on are explored through detailed, qualitative vignettes and case studies from the authors’ own research. Bengtsson and Ravn quite rightly locate these insights into the everyday risk practices of young people within a wider analysis of changing patterns of youth transition to adulthood and, in turn, how these relate to changes in the welfare state, society, and economy. Rob MacDonald, Visiting Professor, Danish Centre for Youth Research, University of Aalborg; Adjunct Research Professor, Department of Sociology, Monash UniversityThis is an excellent book that not only takes our understanding of ‘risk’ to new levels but also shows why it should remain central to how we analyses the lives of young people today. A must read for those working in the field of youth sociology’. Alan France, Professor, University of AucklandThis is an insightful book about risk-taking practices amongst young people in Denmark. Bengtsson and Ravn take a fresh look at theories of risk while also drawing on youth sociology to analyse their own empirical data on young people’s risk-taking practices. Taylor & Francis Ltd Rethinking Management
What do business school graduates learn, and how helpful is it for managing in the everyday, messy reality of organisations? What does it mean to apply ''best practice'', or to take up ''evidence-based management'' and what kind of thinking does this imply? In Rethinking Management, Chris Mowles argues that many management courses still largely assume a linear and predictable world, when experience tells us that the opposite is the case. He questions some of the more orthodox conceptual assumptions that underpin much management education and instead, encourages leaders and managers to take their everyday experience of working with others seriously. People in organisations co-operate and compete to get things done, and constrain and enable each other in relationships of power. Because of this there are always unintended consequences of our actions - uncertainty is inherent in the everyday. Chris Mowles draws on the complexity sciences, the sciences of uncertainty rather than certainty,

Taylor & Francis Ltd Religious and Sexual Identities
Book SynopsisPresenting qualitative and quantitative findings on the lived experiences of around seven hundred young adults from Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh and mixed-faith backgrounds, Religious and Sexual Identities provides an illuminating and nuanced analysis of young adults' perceptions and negotiations of their religious, sexual, youth and gender identities. It demonstrates how these young adults creatively construct meanings and social connections as they navigate demanding but exciting spaces in which their multiple identities intersect. Accessible quantitative analyses are combined with rich interview and video diary narratives in this theoretically-informed exploration of religious and sexual identities in contemporary society. A timely investigation revealing the multiplicity of contemporary identities, this book will appeal not only to sociologists and scholars of religion, but also to those working in the fields of youth studies, sexuality, gender and identity.Trade Review’Critically cutting-edge in its mixed-method and inter-disciplinary approach, this book transcends the boundaries of religion or sexuality, guiding us through (non)normative identities and practices, which also trouble heterosexuality and dominant Christianity. Book SynopsisOlder people are, like younger people, citizens in the communities of the nations in which they live. This book sees ageing as a life journey that incorporates a process of citizening, in which people build their identity as part of their family and community. But the social experience of illness, frailty, disability and reaching the end of life may de-citizen older people by devaluing the social identity that comes from continuing social engagement. We de-citizen older people by emphasizing dependence on services and their cost to public expenditure instead of valuing the interdependence of participation and mutual respect. This book argues that older people retain full citizenship for the whole of their lives, up to the moment of death; but what does this mean for health and social care?In this groundbreaking book, Malcolm Payne argues that social work with older people must build re-citizening practice strategies to value both the common and the special aspects of the citiTrade Review'Challenging current practice models in social work and social care, Payne explores the concepts of citizenship, social work and participative interdependence and skillfully demonstrates how these could – and should – be applied to practice with older people at the end of life. Book SynopsisThis book identifies the definition of a child within the law, the rights of children, and discusses the extent to which primarily English law gives adequate recognition to and protection of these rights. Taylor & Francis Ltd Power Politics and Society
Book SynopsisPower, Politics and Society: An Introduction to Political Sociology discusses how sociologists have organized the study of politics into conceptual frameworks, and how each of these frameworks foster a sociological perspective on power and politics in society. This includes discussing how these frameworks can be applied to understanding current issues and other real life aspects of politics. This second edition incorporates new material on cultural divides in American politics, emerging roles for the state, the ongoing effects of the Great Recession and recovery, the 2016 election, social media, and the various policies introduced during the Trump administration and how they affect people's lives.Trade Review"Dobratz, Buzzell, and Waldner masterfully present the principal themes in political sociology in ways that compel students to see how their lives are shaped by power and politics and highlights how they can reshape power relations through social networks, organizations, and social institutions."--Robert Futrell, Professor and Chair, Sociology, University of Nevada, Las Vegas"This book provides a comprehensive overview and very thorough treatment of the main ideas and arguments within political sociology. I especially like the authors' attention to culture, and their detailed presentation of the ways in which politics and the state frame and permeate so many elements of everyday life. Truly they will help you to see, as Antonio Gramsci noted, that all of social life is, in some way or other, political."--Paul McLean, Professor, Sociology, Rutgers University"Power, Politics and Society 2nd edition is a highly engaging introduction to the major theories, topics and debates within the field of political sociology. The clearly-written prose manages to combine significant breadth of coverage with accessible and intriguing examples to draw students in and demonstrate the continued value of using sociology to examine power, politics and their own lives."--Scott Fitzgerald, Associate Professor and Associate Chair, Sociology, University of North Carolina, CharlotteTable of ContentsChapter 1 Power; Chapter 2 Role of the State; Chapter 3 Politics, Culture, and Social Processes; Chapter 4 The Politics of Everyday Life: Political Economy; Chapter 5 The Politics of Everyday Life: Social Institutions and Social Relations; Chapter 6 Political Participation; Chapter 7 Elections and Voting; Chapter 8 Social Movements; Chapter 9 Violence and Terrorism; Chapter 10 Globalization

Taylor & Francis Ltd Deradicalisation and Terrorist Rehabilitation
Book SynopsisThe threat of terrorism, if not adequately managed, is likely to increase exponentially. As terrorist groups' influence and networks spread globally, a concerted effort in counterterrorism strategy is critical to mitigating the threat they present. Governments facing the threat of terrorism are typically strengthening their law enforcement, military and intelligence capabilities, but more complex initiatives such as deradicalisation and terrorist rehabilitation are more time-consuming and less attention-grabbing and so tend to be neglected. It is all too easy to ''do'' rehabilitation ineffectively or to simply ignore it altogether. This is unfortunate, as an effective rehabilitation strategy can yield dividends over the longer term. Every committed terrorist is a potential recruiter, whether in prison or at liberty, for more terrorists. Even in death, they can potentially be presented as martyrs. Conversely, successfully rehabilitated terrorists can be valuable assets in the public Trade Review‘Rohan Gunaratna is a renowned expert on terrorism and political violence. Rehabilitation requires intense interaction at the individual level and includes religious guidance, psychological counseling, financial assistance, improving education, family and community engagement, even marriage, all aimed at achieving a permanent transformation of behavior. The chapters compiled by Rohan Gunaratna and Sabariah M. Hussin suggest common principles but illustrate diverse approaches. What is appropriate and works in one society might not be suitable in another…As should be apparent from the reflections in this foreword, readers will have much to think about as they read this important volume.’ - Brian Michael Jenkins, Senior Adviser to the President of the RAND Corporation, US'These two edited volumes (Deradicalisation and terrorist rehabilitation, and International case studies of terrorist rehabilitation) are therefore helpful, in that they provide those charged with implementing our counterterrorism programmes with a guide—a selection of lessons learned, both positive and negative, drawn from an impressively broad range of contexts.' - David H. Book SynopsisFirst published in 1998, the aims of this book are: the comparison of community care service and financing systems, the comparison of reform arguments and history over the last decade, the comparison of who uses how much of what services, and with what impact on their needs and the probability of having to enter institutions for long-term care. The book breaks new ground by comparing systems from a new perspective and describing contemporary reform argument and proposals for the first time in the English language. It presents new evidence from the most ambitious collection and analysis of quantative data so far made for the comparison of the two countries (based on matched area samples collecting comparable information about cohorts of new users on two or more occasions). The book also shows how the need-related circumstances of users differ between countries and within each country between areas. The book shows how and why higher levels of the French cash benefit for communTrade Review’This is a work of considerable scholarship, striking an admirable balance between descriptive detail and general policy overview. It is resolutely focussed on the comparable equity and efficiency of health and social care services in England and France. Those wanting an introduction to a now very topical question will find Davies’ well-established approach an excellent guide through complexity.’ Professor Robert Leaper ’Community Care in England and France is a groundbreaking comparative analysis of equity in care consumption and efficiency in care production...this book’s strength is its use of standardized measures of need, dependency, disability, and informal care...poses essential questions for further reading.’ European Journal of Social WorkTable of Contents1. Taylor & Francis Ltd Welcome to the Revolution
Book SynopsisWhen the Women's March gathered millions just one day after Trump's inauguration, a new era of progressive action was born. Organizing on the far Right led to Trump's election, bringing authoritarianism and the specter of neo-fascism, and intensifying corporate capitalism's growing crises of inequality and injustices. Yet now we see a new universalizing resistance among progressive and left movements for truth, dignity, and a world based on democracy, equality, and sustainability. Derber ?offers the first comprehensive guide to this new era and an original vision and strategy for movement success. He convincingly shows how only a new ?universalizing? wave, a ?progressive? and revolutionary movement of movements, can counter the world-universalizing economic and cultural forces of intensifying corporate and far-right power.Derber explores the crises and eroding legitimacy of the globalized? capitalist system ?and the right wing movements? that helped create the Trump erTrade Review"This book is joyfully jammed with the wisdom, experience, tools and motivation to overcome the ravages of the corporate state. With the election of Donald Trump, millions of Americans suddenly found themselves attending women’s rallies, supporting sanctuary cities, protesting Islamophobia, confronting their elected officials—even doing civil disobedience or running for local office. But activists, and the movements they are part of, need strategy, they need direction, they need to know not just what they are resisting but what transformations they aim for. Charles Derber’s brilliant and inspiring new book provides the glue that will help us craft a revolutionary movement that can resist, transform and prevail. Read it!" - Medea Benjamin, Co-Founder of Code Pink and Global Exchange"Charlie Derber’s new book calls us all both to work harder on our particular issues and to get out of our silos to make common cause with others to change the system as a whole. This is the right message for theTrump era, and it is presented in powerful, moral, and practical terms. A must read for anyone serious about building a meaningful and positive future!" - Gar Alperovitz, author of What Then Must We Do? Straight Talk about the Next American Revolution, and Co-Chair of The Next System Project"Derber has written the theoretical and practical manifesto for this historical moment, reminding us of the tremendous possibilities at hand. Welcome to the Revolution explains how extractive capitalism has led to expanding systemic social, economic and ecological system disruptions. Leading pension experts from across Europe analyse the basic challenges through single and comparative country studies. The editors provide facts and figures on women''s lives, work and pensions and draw theoretical lessons and practical policy conclusions from the studies and gendered statistical indicators.Trade Review'At a time when pension reform, coverage and adequacy are high on the socio-economic and political agenda... this publication fills an important gap by looking at the impact of the pension reforms on half of the population, which is all too frequently exposed to poverty in old age.' In it he presents an engrossing and very personal perspective, offering the reader exceptional insights, wisdom and wit as only James Reason can. The journey begins with a bizarre absent-minded action slip committed by Professor Reason in the early 1970s - putting cat food into the teapot - and continues up to the present day, conveying his unique perceptions into a variety of major accidents that have shaped his thinking about unsafe acts and latent conditions. A Life in Error charts the development of his seminal and hugely influential work from its original focus into individual cognitive psychology through the broadening of scope to embrace social, organizational and systemic issues. The authors in this book show that the interesting occupational characteristics of these societal duties are their connection to gender and crisis management in a wider sense. Gendered practices, processes, identities, and symbols are analytical lenses that provide a particular understanding and explanatory base that has received far too little attention in the academic literature. This book identifies four major themes in relation to a gendered understanding of the rescue services, and more generally emergencyTable of ContentsContents: Introduction: masculinities, gender equality, crisis management and the rescue services: contested terrains and challenges, Ulf Mellström, Mathias Ericson, Anne-Charlott Callerstig, Katherine Harrison, Kristina Lindholm and Jennie Olofsson; Masculinity, sexualisation and the proactive turn in the firefighter profession, Mathias Ericson; Masculinity, emotions and ‘communities of relief’ among male emergency medical technicians, Morten Kyed; Masculinities and the dynamics of labour and power in the watch, Sarah O’Connor; Institutional patriarchy, auto-critique and resilience - a comparative gaze, Dave Baigent; Stray dogs and women are prohibited in the sentry on the spatial effects of fire fighters’ homosocial practices, Jennie Olofsson; Unpacking the black box of IDA: standardisation and disappearing gender, Katherine Harrison; Collaboration as a tool for implementing equality politics, Anne-Charlott Callerstig and Kristina Lindholm; Agents for change? Taylor & Francis Ltd The Tradition of the Chicago School of Sociology
Book SynopsisThe value of the book lies in its reassessment of the distinctive features of the Chicago School, of its contributions in the theoretical and methodological fields and of its influence on the growth of sociology throughout the world and in America in particular. The book pays particularly close attention to the eclectic nature of the research methods used by the Chicago sociologists as they sought to integrate subjective and objective aspects of human life. It demonstrates that this eclecticism formed an integral part of their theories but also emphasises that empirical observation, too, was important, although not as an end in itself. While, for example, they were working on the concepts of organization, marginality and interaction, they did not consider these as ends in themselves but as additions to the development of a more general theoretical approach. Often in the past, and wrongly, Chicago’s theoretical contribution has been restricted to the urban sector. The book clearly and unequivocally reveals how the tendency to see the Chicago School as a 'theoretical' is the result of misinterpretation and of a failure to realize that, for the sociologists of the period, understanding the social dynamics of the city of Chicago was tantamount to interpreting the central tendencies of modern society itself. The book analyzes how empirical observation was important but not an end in itself. The Chicago School developed a profusion of sociological theories in many areas of inquiry and never opted for any one particular approach. The various essays in the book also make it clear that the School decisively contributed to the development of qualitative and quantitative techniques.Table of ContentsContents: Theoretical Problematic: The Gothic foundation of Robert E. Park’s conception of race and culture; The contribution of Georg Simmel to the foundation of theory at the Chicago School of Sociology; The neighbourhood and deviance in the Chicago School, a relationistic interpretation; The place of the Chicago School of Sociology in the study of nationality and ethnicity. Taylor & Francis Ltd Anticapitalism and Culture: Radical Theory and
Book SynopsisWhat does 'anticapitalism' really mean for the politics and culture of the twenty-first century?Anticapitalism is an idea which, despite going global, remains rooted in the local, persisting as a loose collection of grassroots movements and actions. Anticapitalism needs to develop a coherent and cohering philosophy, something which cultural theory and the intellectual legacy of the New Left can help to provide, notably through the work of key radical thinkers, such as Ernesto Laclau, Stuart Hall, Antonio Negri, Gilles Deleuze and Judith Butler. Anticapitalism and Culture argues that there is a strong relationship between the radical tradition of cultural studies and the new political movements which try to resist corporate globalization. Indeed, the two need each other: whilst theory can shape and direct the huge diversity of anticapitalist activism, the energy and sheer political engagement of the anticapitalist movement can breathe new life into cultural studies.Trade Review"This book convincingly argues that cultural studies can only reinvigorate itself by connecting its arguments on culture to the politics of the great oppositional movement of the twenty-first century, the alter-globalisation or anti-capitalist movement. Essential reading for cultural studies thinkers and anyone interested in culture and anti-capitalism. - Tim Jordan, Open University Gilbert takes us on an informative and well-signposted tour of the post-Second World War dialogue between the anticapitalist movement in popular politics and the investiture of cultural studies into interdisciplinary programmes and departments in UK universities. - Terrell Carver (Bristol University) - THE"Table of ContentsIntroduction1. Taylor & Francis Ltd Re-Thinking Social Research: Anti-Discriminatory
Book SynopsisSocial research plays an important part in the social sciences and in the planning and implementation of personal social services. Whilst considerable attention has been paid to the methods used to undertake social research, little has been done to explore the processes under which it is carried out. This volume explores the process of social research from an anti-discriminatory perspective. Contributors address themes connected to every aspect of social research from its design, through fieldwork to implementation of findings. Papers adopt critical perspectives to explore issues to do with many aspects of power and 'difference' in research including the power of black feminist research, issues in collaborative research, anti-discriminatory methodologies, quality of life in people with learning difficulties and participatory research. The book addresses many key issues which have been at the centre of current social debate and offers a unique contribution to the literature on research methodology. As such, it is likely to have a wide readership with both academic audiences and practice based welfare professions.Trade Review’...provides practical direction for any researcher who seeks to actively work for change against all forms of discrimination and oppression.’ Professor Donna M. Mertens, Gallaudet University, USA ’This book offers a wealth of insights...If the goal of social work research is to offer guidance to social work practitioners and policy makers, then this book is a must read for those undertaking and teaching social work research.’ Mary Valentich, The University of Calgary, Canada ’...an important book. It should be read by administrators and field staff in health and human service agencies, researchers, social action groups, and academics responsible for research education of students in the helping and healing professions.’ James Gripton, Emeritus Professor, The University of Calgary, Canada ’This collection of much needed articles provides an excellent way to generate discussion on research within welfare provision. This is a book that will be very valuable to students, academics, welfare practitioners and administrators.’ Kum-Kum Bhavnani, University of California, USATable of ContentsContents: Rethinking social research: research in an unequal world; Feminist challenges to traditional research: have they gone far enough?; Black children in the public care system: some issues for anti-discriminatory research; Exploring ways of giving a voice to people with learning disabilities; Lost in a straight reality: lesbians and gay men in social research; Critical life histories: key anti-oppressive research methods and processes; Developing a feminist participative research framework: evaluating the process; Doing service based research: some lessons from the all-Wales strategy; Anti-discriminatory practitioner social work research: some basic problems and possible remedies; Empowerment and social research: elements for an analytic framework; Index.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Negative Images: A Simple Matter of Black and
Book SynopsisThat black young people have been subject to unequal treatment in the youth justice system has been the belief of some individuals and groups, reinforced, at best, by anecdotal evidence. Negative Images: A Simple Matter of Black and White? provides not only evidential weight to uphold this view but also provides some insights into the processes by which it comes about. Findings of a case study detailed in the book demonstrate how in one youth court black youths were over-represented amongst those receiving high-tariff sentencing and that this over-representation could not be explained by seriousness or persistence of offending. Whilst responsibility for differential sentencing has often been laid at the door of Magistrates, this study reveals how social work court report practice may be contributing to the situation.Table of ContentsContents: The Backdrop: Introduction; Racism; Changing ideologies and the development of the juvenile justice system in England and Wales; Social Inquiry Reports: Historical developments and literature review; The juvenile justice system and Race. Negative Images: Wolverhampton, social services and the local juvenile justice system; Research methodology; Quantitative research; Qualitative research; Summary of findings and recommendations.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Qualitative Computing: Using Software for
Book SynopsisAs qualitative researchers incorporate computer assistance into their analytic approaches, important questions arise about the adoption of new technology. Is it worth learning computer-assisted methods? Will the pay-off be sufficient to justify the investment? Which programs are worth learning? What are the effects on the analysis process? This book complements the existing literature by giving a detailed account of the use of four major programs in analyzing the same data. Priority is given to the tasks of qualitative analysis rather than to program capability and the programs are treated as tools rather than as a discipline to be acquired. The key is not what the programs allow researcher to do, but whether the tasks that researchers need to undertake are facilitated by the software. Thus the study develops a user-centred approach to the adoption of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis. The author emphasises qualitative analysis as a creative craft, but one which must increasingly be subject to rigorous methodological scrutiny. The adoption of computer-aided methods offers opportunities, but also dangers and ultimately this book is about the scientific qualitative research. Written in a distinctive and succinct style, this book will be valuable to social science researchers and students interested in qualitative research and in the potential for computer-assisted analysis.Table of ContentsContents: Getting into... and getting on with qualitative computing; Approaches to qualitative computing; Text searching and data exploration; Category building and finding meaning; Theory building; Conclusion; References.
