Manohar Publishers and Distributors A Haunting Tragedy: Gender, Caste and Class in
Book SynopsisThis book is a detailed analysis of the food scarcity and epidemics among the womenfolk and other vulnerable sections of society in colonial Orissa. Its major significance lies in the fact that the food crisis, mass exodus and adverse sex ratio continue to raise questions in the contemporary world. Studies of such experiences help in re-designing strategies to meet the challenges arising from natural disasters, wars, pandemics, besides poverty and uncertain production outcomes. The study of Orissa Famine of 1866 explodes the myth upheld by the colonial administrators that women died at a lower rate than men in famines, because they could easily adapt to food scarcity and were supposedly less prone to infectious diseases. Evidence based on historical, sociological and biological factors showed that increasing male migration, much of it, leading to high mortality, explains the change in sex ratio during the colonial period. This work also shows that many of today''s consumption preferences, linguistic usages and cultural habits of people, carry traces of cataclysmic experiences.

Manohar Publishers and Distributors Gandhi and Adivasis: Tribal Movements in Eastern
Book SynopsisAdivasi movements played a very important, if not determining, role in the India's freedom struggle. Gandhi's idea of mass mobilization couldn't have been successful without the active participation of all sections of the Indian society. Adivasi movements were swelled by Gandhian ideology only during the Non-Cooperation movement. Though Gandhi's interest in the tribal problems crystallized at a later stage of his life, his influence on tribal movements was revealing. His association with Thakkar Bapa and Verrier Elwin also enriched his knowledge about tribal state of affairs. Adivasis started looking at Gandhi as saviour or a saint, who could deliver them justice and peace. But, Gandhi always supported Adivasi movements in order to give a mass character to his movements. There were some particular demands of the Adivasis that were not supported by Gandhi. Their armed struggle was also against his non-violent principles.

Oxford University Press A World of Three Cultures
Book SynopsisIn this book, Miguel Basáñez presents a provocative look at the impact of culture on global development. Drawing on data from governments, NGOs, the World Values Survey and more addressing over one hundred countries, he argues that values, as the building blocks of culture, are directly related to the speed with which social, cultural and economic development occurs. Basáñez utilizes quantitative survey data to delineate three cultural hyperclusters across the globe: cultures of honor, which prioritize political authority; cultures of achievement, which emphasize economic advancement; and cultures of joy, which focus on social interactions. According to Basáñez, these cultures evolved chronologically, mirroring the development of agrarian, industrial and service societies. He argues that a country''s developmental path is profoundly influenced by its people''s values and culture, as crystallized through its formal and informal governing institutions. Culture is passed down over generatiTrade Review"Miguel Basáñez has married his personal confrontations with cultural diversity with objective evidence to craft an original scheme of categories for societies that will provoke experts and those interested in the importance of a society's values to reflect on their current understanding. Every reader concerned with the inequalities among the world's nations will profit from this synthesis of fact and speculation." -Jerome Kagan, Professor of Psychology, Emeritus, Harvard University "By making exceptional use of Inglehart's World Values Survey, Basáñez has very skillfully reasoned the impact of values on development. The three cultures he outlines - honor, achievement and joy - represent Atlantic culture, East Asian culture and Latin American culture. The book shows persuasively that the three cultures bloom each in their own way, vindicating the claim that the world experiences multiple modernities. Its beauty also lies in how well Basáñez exemplifies the three cultures!" -Takashi Inoguchi, Professor Emeritus, University of Tokyo "In this very readable book Miguel Basa?ez presents a cross-cultural world view influenced by the data analysis and interpretation of the three founding fathers of the discipline: a European management researcher, an American sociologist, and an Israeli psychologist, but this he does from his own Latin-American point of view. Compared to us he is quite original in adding to his two main axes of Power and Achievement a third axis of Joy. It is a joy to read his work." -Geert Hofstede, author of Culture's Consequences "A World of Three Cultures is a book to be recommended in a time of cultural wars, because it helps the reader to give meaning to such conflicts through the use of statistical data and to give hope to global public opinion in a possible convergence scenario." -Matteo B. Oxford University Press Inc The Color of Welfare
Book SynopsisFrom Reconstruction to Lyndon Johnson and beyond, Jill Quadagno reveals how American social policy has continuously foundered on issues of race. She draws on extensive primary research to show how social programmes became entwined with the civil rights movement and subsequently suffered by association at the hands of a white backlash.Trade Review"Important....A major contribution."--Frances Fox Piven, co-author of Why Americans Don't Vote and Regulating the Poor "A sweeping and detailed account of the U.S. health insurance system's development during the 20th century. ...One Nation Uninsured is a clearly written, informative book that would be of interest to academics studying health care, politics, policy or U.S. history, and members of the lay public who want a better understanding of why the United States does not have universal health insurance. It would also be accessible to students, particularly those in advanced undergraduate courses or graduate seminars."--Social Forces "Outstanding and thought provoking."--Free Press "What distinguishes Quadagno's depiction is its forceful interjection of racial issues into the heart of welfare policy analysis. The result is a suggestive and informative reconsideration....Written in limpid, unpretentious prose, The Color of Welfare contains numerous gems of policy analysis."--American Journal of Sociology "What distinguishes Quadagno's depiction is its forceful interjection of racial issues into the heart of welfare policy analysis. The result is a suggestive and informative reconsideration....Written in limpid, unpretentious prose, The Color of Welfare contains numerous gems of policy analysis (including fresh treatments of employment, housing, and day care policy and, best of all, of President Mixon's ill-fated Family Assistance Plan [FAP])."--American Journal of Sociology "Quadagno demonstrates convincingly that race, class, and gender are essential analytical categories for those who hope to understand the nation's past and to design public hope to understand the nation's past and to design public policies for its future. [A] timely, well-researched study."--Booklist "This important book provides a lucid and perceptive analysis of the War on Poverty and the turbulent race politics which surrounded and ultimately engulfed it. More than that, by placing racial inequality at the very center of her analysis, Jill Quadagno makes a major contribution to our understanding of the distinctive development of the American welfare state."--Frances Fox Piven, co-author of Why Americans Don't Vote and Regulating the Poor "A leading authority on the American welfare state, Jill Quadagno makes a compelling case for her thesis that racism has done more than any other fact to limit generous and dignified public social provision in the United States. Scholars, students, and policy-makers all have much to learn from this important book."--Theda Skocpol, author of Protecting Soldiers and Mothers: The Political Origins of Social Policy in the United States "A telling analysis of race as the key faultline of American social policy."--Joel Blau, author of The Visible Poor: Homelessness in the U.S. "The graceful prose of Jill Quadagno's new book conceals a hard-hitting argument about the critical importance of racism in shaping the American welfare state. Based on exhaustive research in primary sources, she tells a story which has not been told before. Even child care programs, not to mention family assistance, job training, and housing programs have been decisively shaped by the politics of race. Theoretically, her argument challenges the claim that America's 'liberal values' have been a main barrier to the expansion of the American welfare state."--Robert R. Alford, author of Health Care Politics "A sweeping and detailed account of the U.S. health insurance system's development during the 20th century. ...One Nation Uninsured is a clearly written, informative book that would be of interest to academics studying health care, politics, policy or U.S. history, and members of the lay public who want a better understanding of why the United States does not have universal health insurance. Oxford University Press Inc Norman Street
Book SynopsisNorman Street is the first serious examination of a scenario that appears likely to be played out again and again as federal budget policies result in reduced services for urban areas across the country. Based on a three-year study conducted in Brooklyn''s Greenpoint/Williamsburg section, the book is an in-depth, detailed description of life in a multi-ethnic working class neighborhood during New York City''s fiscal crisis of 1975-78. Now updated with a new introduction to address the changes and events of the thirty years since the book''s original publication, its lessons continue to demonstrate the impact of political and economic changes on everyday lives.Relating local events to national policy, Susser deals directly with issues and problems that face industrial cities nationwide: ethnic and race relations are analyzed within the context of community organization and local politics; the impact of landlord/tenant relations, housing discrimination, and red-lining are examined; and tTrade ReviewThe original edition of Norman Street painted a gripping and moving portrait of a mid-1970s NYC neighborhood under assault. At that time, neither Susser nor the residents of Greenpoint-Williamsburg could imagine that the combination of regulation and neglect they were enduring was a precursor of the much larger and more devastating global project of neoliberalism. This reissued and updated edition, with Susser's compelling new introduction, offers a moving and instructive time-trip, transporting us back to a key moment in the struggle for livable urban neighborhoods. * Jane Collins, University of Wisconsin-Madison *Blending fine-grain ethnography with superb political economic analysis, Susser's Norman Street is a classic of urban social science. It gives a vivid picture of the economic ingredients, social struggles, and demographic change that set the stage for a hipsterized Williamsburg and transformed Greenpoint. Oxford University Press Social Foundations of Postindustrial Economies
Book SynopsisThe Golden Age of postwar capitalism has been eclipsed, and with it seemingly also the possibility of harmonizing equality and welfare with efficiency and jobs. Most analyses believe the the emerging postindustrial society is overdetermined by massive, convergent forces, such as tertiarization, new technologies, or globalization, all conspiring to make welfare states unsustainable in the future. Social Foundations of Postindustrial Economies takes a second, more sociological and more institutional, look at the driving forces of economic transformation. What, as a result, stands out is postindustrial diversity, not convergence. Macroscopic, global trends are undoubtedly powerful, yet their influence is easily rivalled by domestic institutional traditions, by the kind of welfare regime that, some generations ago, was put in place. It is, however, especially the family economy that hold the key as to what kind of postindustrial model will emerge, and to how evolving tradeoffs will be manaTrade ReviewOnce again, Esping-Andersen has laid out for us an ambitious academic and political agenda. This book will certainly be of interest to the community of comparative welfare regime analysts, but should be read as well by analysts of U.S. welfare reform, for it reveals that many of the policy changes these scholars are charting are not confined to America. * Ann Shola Orloff, American Journal of Sociology *provocative and informative * Ann Shola Orloff, American Journal of Sociology *Esping-Andersen's new work shows the significant scholarly payoff from the sustained conversations that have come to characterize comparative welfare regime analysis, including those between feminists and others. Book SynopsisBuilding on the successful outcomes of a five-year initiative undertaken in New York City, Alma Carten, Alan Siskind, and Mary Pender Greene bring together a national roster of leading practitioners, scholars, and advocates who draw upon extensive practice experiences and original research. Together, they offer a range of strategies with a high potential for creating the critical mass for change that is essential to transforming the nation''s health and human services systems. Strategies for Deconstructing Racism in the Health and Human Services closes the gap in the literature examining the role of interpersonal bias, structural racism, and institutional racism that diminish service access and serve as the root cause for the persistence of disparate racial and ethnic outcomes observed in the nation''s health and human services systems. Oxford University Press Neighbor Networks
Book SynopsisThere is a moral to this book, a bit of Confucian wisdom often ignored in social network analysis: Worry not that no one knows you, seek to be worth knowing. This advice is contrary to the usual social network emphasis on securing relations with well-connected people. Neighbor Networks examines the cases of analysts, bankers, and managers, and finds that rewards, in fact, do go to people with well-connected colleagues. Look around your organization. The individuals doing well tend to be affiliated with well-connected colleagues. However, the advantage obvious to the naked eye is misleading. It disappears when an individual''s own characteristics are held constant. Well-connected people do not have to affiliate with people who have nothing to offer. This book shows that affiliation with well-connected people adds stability but no advantage to a person''s own connections. Advantage is concentrated in people who are themselves well connected. This book is a trail of argument and evidence Trade ReviewWinner of the 2011 Academy of Management's George R. Terry Book Award 'for outstanding contribution to the advancement of management knowledge.'Scholars interested in rigorous analytical approaches to social capital, social dynamics, or network phenomena will greatly enjoy Neighbor Networks. * Brian Rubineau, Industrial and Labor Relations Review *The core contribution of Neighbor Networks is the rich detail devoted to explaining when it matters to be connected to well-connected others. Theoretically, the book explains how the social capital benefits accruing to individuals are largely the result of their immediate networks. Empirically, the book offers a bevy of evidence in support of these claims. The contribution also delineates the cases of closure in neighbour networks (and the effects of such closure on reputation and relationship development) and the benefits of having a strategic partner inside a neighbor network. This is a fine book of interest to graduate students and researchers across the social sciences. * Martin Kilduff and Blaine Landis, Administrative Science Quarterly *Burt ... has an impressive ability to establish connections between "classical" theories and to show how they relate to network concepts. Would you expect a book about social networks to rely on references as varied as Weber, Veblen, Durkheim, Von Hayek, McClelland, and many others? Burt is not merely theorizing on brokerage across social groups; he is one of the brokers that are described in the book. A broker who spans structural holes across disciplines, questions theories and levels of analysis, and who combines all this in a theory of his own. * Barthélémy Chollet, M@n@gement *Table of ContentsPART I: ESTABLISHING SECONDHAND BROKERAGE; PART II: TESTING THE PERIMETER; PART III: EXPLORING IMPLICATIONS

Book SynopsisIt is commonly acknowledged that sexual abuse of children is a grave and pervasive problem and that child molesters are predators who compulsively repeat their crimes and have little hope of cure. Yet as recently as twenty years ago many experts viewed the problem far less seriously, declaring that molestation was a very rare offense and that molesters were merely confused individuals unlikely to repeat their offenses. Over the past century, opinion has fluctuated between these radically different perspectives. This timely book traces shifting social responses to adult sexual contacts with children, whether this involves molestation by strangers or incestuous acts by family members. The book explores how and why concern about the sexual offender has fluctuated in North America since the late nineteenth century. Philip Jenkins argues that all concepts of sex offenders and offenses are subject to social, political, and ideological influences and that no particular view of offenders repre

Asante, Jr., a passionate young poet, professor, filmmaker, and activist who represents this new movement, uses hip hop as a springboard for a larger discussion about the urgent social and political issues affecting the hip-hop and post-hip-hop generations.Through insightful anecdotes, scholarship, revolutionary rap lyrics, personal encounters, and conversations with youth across the globe as well as icons such as Chuck D and Maya Angelou, Asante illuminates a shift that can be felt in the crowded spoken-word joints in post-Katrina New Orleans, seen in the rise of youth-led organizations committed to social justice, and heard around the world chanting It''s bigger than hip hop.

ABC-CLIO Developing NonHierarchical Leadership on Campus
Book SynopsisMany problems that plague modern American society, including disappearance of community, decaying inner cities, racial tensions, environmental degradation, declining civic engagement, and the increasing ineffectiveness of government, to name a few, are in many respects problems of leadership.Trade ReviewThis is an excellent book. I recommend it highly to leadership practictioners, faculty, students, and any person who shares an interest in non-hierarchical leadership. It is a volume you will revisit time and again whether you are wrestling with a new concept, preparing a presentation, planning a change process. I guarantee that within short order our edition . . . will bear the scars of ample use. That can only mean good things for the future of non-hierarchical leadership development. * Concepts & Connections: Teaching Leadership *One of the key strengths of this book is the inclusion of student voices. Each of the four sections opens with a quote or reflection from one or more students and the inclusion of student voices in many of the chapters adds much to the presentation of the material. . . . [P]racticing student affairs professionals developing the next generation of student leaders may find this to be a useful resource. * Journal of College Student Development *Table of ContentsForeword by Alexander W.
