Book SynopsisThis book, the first to study women's historical involvement in postwar reconciliation, examines how patriarchy and the international relations system operated simultaneously to ensure postwar male privilege.Trade Review"Kuhlman helps us to recognize that peacemaking is not exclusive to policymakers but also involves the process of reconciliation among human beings across and within national borders . . .With an enormous subject and complex ideas, the clarity and grace of Kuhlman s work are especially praiseworthy." - American Historical Review "Kuhlman's transnational perspective broadens our understanding of the role of women activists in the post-war period while also providingoriginal insights into how forces at work on the ground normalized civilian life in Germany during that time. The book confirms in many ways the work of earlier scholars of the subject, while moving beyond that work to investigate the success of America in Germany and its reliance upon patriarchal norms to ensure peace. Kuhlman successfully balances the attempts made at reconciliation by some women s organizations and the ongoing perpetuation of wartime animosities by other groups. By essentially embedding women into the reconciliation process, she reveals both how they attempted to ensure that process but also, in other ways, how they perpetuated disharmony." - Maria Luddy, Professor of History, University of Warwick"The author succeeds admirably in providing her readers with a nuanced and comprehensive understanding of the process of international and domestic reconciliation in the post-war period in Germany and the United States and the complex ways in which the reestablishment of patriarchy was woven into this process... With an enormous subject and complex ideas, the clarity and grace of Kuhlman's work are especially praiseworthy." - Nancy K. Book SynopsisFutebol Nation by David Goldblatt - a thriling history of Brazil through its sporting passionFrom the genius of Pelé to corruption and civil unrest, no nation has so closely aligned its national identity with playing and watching football as Brazil. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade Review"A valuable and welcome addition to the literature in Latina/o studies. I commend Aparicio on this important work. It will be a significant contribution to thinking about multicultural identities in immigrant-descendant generations, and about the traditional paradigm of American assimilation."--Rina Benmayor, coeditor of Memory, Subjectivities, and Representation: Approaches to Oral History in Latin America, Portugal, and Spain"Aptly interweaving humanities and social science approaches to identity, Aparicio sets up some of the building blocks for what Latino Studies will become in the twenty-first century. Her compelling engagement with storytelling by Latinos articulating intraLatina/o identities in Chicago is a groundbreaking intervention in the study of U.S. Latinidad that transcends while honoring cultural nationalist models that may not always serve to capture our realities. Her use of the concepts 'horizontal hierarchies' and 'affective essentializing' to analyze co-existence, competition, love, conflict, and solidarity leaves us rethinking our lives in inter-Latino communities and how we describe them. While reading about linguistic battles between parents, grandmas seeking to win over their intraLatina/o children through food, and college students trying to find a sense of belonging to inter-Latino families, communities, and college settings, the reader witnesses intimate spaces of kinship building by intraLatina/os and is deeply engaged by the courageous truths of our communities."--Alaí Reyes-Santos, author of Our Caribbean Kin: Race and Nation in the Neoliberal Antilles

Book SynopsisConsidering the development and ongoing influence of Black thought From 1900 to the present, people of African descent living in the United States have drawn on homegrown and diasporic minds to create a Black intellectual tradition engaged with ideas on race, racial oppression, and the world. This volume presents essays on the diverse thought behind the fight for racial justice as developed by African American artists and intellectuals; performers and protest activists; institutions and organizations; and educators and religious leaders. By including both women’s and men’s perspectives from the U.S. and the Diaspora, the essays explore the full landscape of the Black intellectual tradition. • Journalism and Jim Crow

University of Illinois Press Journalism and Jim Crow

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWinner of the American Historical Association's 2022 Eugenia M. Palmegiano Prize. White publishers and editors used their newspapers to build, nurture, and protect white supremacy across the South in the decades after the Civil War. At the same time, a vibrant Black press fought to disrupt these efforts and force the United States to live up to its democratic ideals. Journalism and Jim Crow centers the press as a crucial political actor shaping the rise of the Jim Crow South. The contributors explore the leading role of the white press in constructing an anti-democratic society by promoting and supporting not only lynching and convict labor but also coordinated campaigns of violence and fraud that disenfranchised Black voters. They also examine the Black press's parallel fight for a multiracial democracy of equality, justice, and opportunity for alla losing battle with tragic consequences for the American experiment. Original and revelatory, Journalism and Jim Crow opens up new ways oTrade Review"Advantaged by the journalistic backgrounds of its writers, the book horrifies as it explains the role of southern white newspapermen in ending Reconstruction, ushering in Jim Crow, and disguising it all in a narrative of 'The New South' . . . . The book dramatically shows the blood on the hands of the white southern press in lynching and then looks closely at the role of newspapers in spreading and resisting white supremacy in case studies of most southern states." --Black Perspectives"A powerful collection of essays exploring how white journalists helped created Jim Crow and how Black journalists fought for something better. . . . All parts of the book are grounded in relevant scholarship and polished for clarity." --Journal of Southern History"Journalism and Jim Crow is well-researched and, for an edited volume, remarkably consistent in quality. . . . The book convincingly supports its argument. Each chapter is filled with facts and insights that every journalist and student of journalism should know." --H-Net Reviews"The research and sourcing are rich, with sixty to one hundred citations per chapter. Historical events are placed in a 2020s context. Journalism and Jim Crow is a relevant read." --American Journalism"Assembling penetrating scholarship on the complex roles that newspapers and their personnel (editors, publishers, reporters) played in both establishing white supremacy in the postbellum South and in resisting its imposition, Journalism and Jim Crow offers much fresh insight based on original research. Together, the collected essays highlight the pivotal role of a set of actors (some of them prominent, many previously neglected) and institutions, making substantial contributions to scholarship on the origins of Jim Crow as well filling a major gap in journalism history and media studies."--Bruce J. • The Spirit of Soul Food

University of Illinois Press The Spirit of Soul Food

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSoul food has played a critical role in preserving Black history, community, and culinary genius. It is also a response to--and marker of--centuries of food injustice. Given the harm that our food production system inflicts upon Black people, what should soul food look like today?Christopher Carter's answer to that question merges a history of Black American foodways with a Christian ethical response to food injustice. Carter reveals how racism and colonialism have long steered the development of US food policy. The very food we grow, distribute, and eat disproportionately harms Black people specifically and people of color among the global poor in general. Carter reflects on how people of color can eat in a way that reflects their cultural identities while remaining true to the principles of compassion, love, justice, and solidarity with the marginalized. Both a timely mediation and a call to action, The Spirit of Soul Food places today's Black foodways at the crossroads of food jusTrade Review"The Spirit of Soul Food is a must-read for anyone interested in challenging the industrial food system in practical terms." --Reading Religion"Christopher Carter's The Spirit of Soul Food is a deeply enlightening discussion of food, foodways, and how the lived experiences of people can shape and be shaped by what they grow, acquire, and eat." --Journal of Folklore Research Reviews“I've never read a book like this before! Part history book, part cookbook, part call-to-action and resource for spiritual formation. The Spirit of Soul Food is suited for a variety of audiences ready for the timely challenge of inviting a deeper integration of our ethics, actions, and daily bread.”--Rev. Book SynopsisBinational cities play a pivotal role in situations of long-term conflict, and few places have been more marked by the tension between intimate proximity and visceral hostility than Jaffa, one of the mixed towns of Israel/Palestine. In this nuanced ethnographic and historical study, Daniel Monterescu argues that such places challenge our assumptions about cities and nationalism, calling into question the Israeli state's policy of maintaining homogeneous, segregated, and ethnically stable spaces. Analyzing everyday interactions, life stories, and histories of violence, he reveals the politics of gentrification and the circumstantial coalitions that define the city. Drawing on key theorists in anthropology, sociology, urban studies, and political science, he outlines a new relational theory of sociality and spatiality.Trade Review The book's analysis of the relations between the political, the cultural, and the neoliberal economy through a historical engagement with the city of Jaffa is a significant contribution to understanding the complexity of life for Jaffa's residents. * Journal of Levantine Studies *Anybody with an interest in the politics and sociology of Israeli/Palestinian relations needs to read this book. Daniel Monterescu provides a rich and theoretically sophisticated account of urban politics in Jaffa. * Perspectives on Politics *In showing how Jaffa is both shared and shattered, the book is an important and timely contribution to ongoing debates about mutual relations between Palestinians and Israelis in the context of recurring conflict, entrenched inequality and ongoing colonisation. It is essential reading for everyone interested in contemporary Palestinian–Israeli relations and should be of particular interest to political and urban anthropologists. * Social Anthropology *For anyone who would like to understand the experience of living as a member of the minority Arab population in a 'mixed' city in Israel, then Jaffa is both the place and the study to read. . . Book SynopsisTrade Review[Rogozen-Soltar's] methodological and theoretical approaches provide some lovely insights and very teachable moments about the complexities of European history, categorical difference, social alliances and betrayals, and identity itself. * City & Society *"An impressively accomplished ethnography of the ambivalent inclusion and exclusion of Islam and Muslims in Granada, Andalusia, Spain. Detailing a set of social encounters between migrant Muslims, Spanish Muslim converts, and non-Muslim Granadians, Rogozen-Soltar successfully charts the 'unequal multiculturalism' resulting from the peripheral city's harnessing of a historical narrative of convivencia to its claims for a privileged position within Spanish and European cosmopolitan modernity. -- Paul SilversteinThis timely, well-researched and engaging book examines the ways Muslim residents of Granada see themselves, and are seen by others, in relation to Granada's Arab past. . . . [B]y illuminating many aspects of the relationships between and within Muslims and non-Muslims in Granada today, Spain Unmoored will be of great interest to students and scholars interested in Spain, Islam and multiculturalism in Europe today. * Anthropos *"Of all the book's persuasive arguments, what stands out is Rogozen-Soltar's careful engagement of the heterogeneity of Granada's Muslim community and her attention to the ways disparity figures into Muslims' relations with one another as much as their encounters with others. An insightful study of multiculturalism and religion in Europe, relevant to scholars, students, and general readers." * Choice Reviews *While Rogozen-Soltar's book is well grounded in anthropological theory, it is not dragged down by jargon or theoretical disquisitions unrelated to the subject matter at hand. Dobrenko argues that Stalin’s all-encompassing ethnic Russianness rooted deeply in everything from literature and philosophy to film, linguistics, and even biology; that it redefined national identity in the Soviet era and has now germinated anew in Putin’s Russia. This book promises to stimulate debate about the country’s past, present, and future.”—Jeffrey Brooks, Johns Hopkins University, author of The Firebird and the Fox: Russian Culture under Tsars and Bolsheviks"Dobrenko has produced a magisterial study of Soviet culture in the 1940s, to him the most truly Stalinist period. This is a much more sophisticated and original interpretation of the decade than we have seen to date, and it will be essential reading for all those interested in Soviet history and culture."—Katerina Clark, Yale University

Book SynopsisMany thousands of people kill themselves every year, and many more are left behind to grieve. This book recounts individual suicide cases from the Bible and ancient Greeks to the present day and analyzes how ideas about suicide have changed over time.Trade Review"Eloquent and affecting."—David Brooks, New York Times"Hecht is an intellectual historian and a poet, and her writing reflects both disciplines: The book is rigorous and deeply rewarding, both accessible and challenging. . . . She finds common threads: sympathy for life’s difficulty, yet a plea to stay, for the sake of one’s community and even for one’s future self."—Kate Tuttle, Boston Globe"A history not only of suicide, but how we think about suicide. . . . Hecht proposes her own argument against suicide in the secular, modern world, presenting a humanist call for life. . . . Her final plea to the suicidal gives the book its title: she urges them to simply 'stay.'"—Thomas Flynn, The Daily Beast"The author of the best-selling Doubt offers a history of suicide and of arguments against it. . . . Even Camus, who found the search for meaning as absurd as pushing the same boulder up a cliff every day, urged his readers to ‘imagine Sisyphus happy,’ and to live."—New Yorker"Hecht’s intentions are patently generous and benign. She wants to save young lives that seem needlessly lost . . . On these counts her book merits praise."—John Carey, The Sunday Times"While not insensitive to people who use suicide as a way to end the suffering of terminal illness, Hecht brands suicide an immoral act that robs society — and the self-killer — of a life that is certainly more valuable than what it may seem in that dark moment. It solves nothing, complicates everything. . . . Her argument is that it — whatever dark truth that pronoun signifies — almost always gets better."—Newsweek"Suicide as a concept has been praised, defended, and vilified in various contexts throughout history as poet and scholar Hecht (Doubt: A History) painstakingly illustrates in this nuanced and unsettling work, whose title acts as a rallying refrain throughout. . . . The book’s conclusions are hopeful. Gratitude is owed to those who reject suicide, according to Hecht, not only by the community but also by one's 'future self' who may be days, months, or years away. Like death, life can inspire, because one's 'ideas matter.'"—Publishers Weekly"One cannot but be impressed by Hecht’s breadth of knowledge, mostly expressed with a light touch, and there are many fascinating details."—Oliver James, The Independent"When I review a book I underline special passages, stick post-it notes and write comments in the margin. By that token this one has inspired me more than anything I’ve read in a very long time. Full of life and spirit and hope, and deeply moving, it communicates a generous love of suffering, flawed humanity. I cannot praise it highly enough."—Bel Mooney, Daily Mail"Hecht’s aim is to show that as suicide was secularised, it became too easy – a mere medical and therefore solipsistic condition which took no account of humans as members of a larger (caring) community. She wants to revitalise the idea that suicide is wrong, harms others and 'damages humanity.' No man or woman, even today, is an island."—Lisa Appignanesi, The Observer"Stay is passionate, sincere, well-researched, well written and commendably honest."—Nick Spencer, The Tablet"The title of this book is an imperative against the departure that is suicide, and its contents provide a learned, illuminating look at the history of what is perhaps the darkest secret in all of human behavior."—Billy Collins"Jennifer Michael Hecht addresses the problem of suicidal nihilism with intellectual sophistication and poetic subtlety. An impassioned defense of life and rejection of self-slaughter (as Hamlet termed it), Stay is an important book."—David Lehman, Editor, The Oxford Book of American Poetry"The perfect vehicle for an informed conversation about the virtues and vices of suicide, this book will literally save lives."—Stephen Prothero, author of The American Bible: How Our Words Unite, Divide, and Define a Nation"In this moving and meaningful book, mythology, poetry, history, and personal reflection all combine to persuade us to stay right here, among the living."—Alan Wolfe, author of Political Evil

Deeply researched and powerfully told, it refuses Indigenous erasure of the “nation of immigrants” framework. Book SynopsisThe humorous side of Dutch culture of the seventeenth century is obscured by a change that took place around 1670. Religious treatises and books of manners warning against laughter contributed to a new image, that of the humourless, Calvinist Dutch. Mainly based on a manuscript with some two thousand jokes, the lost laughter of the Golden Age is reconstructed and analyzed. Most jokes are crude and obscene, and they throw new light on attitudes towards sexuality, religion and other aspects of life.Trade Review'Dekker's book is an important contribution to the new socio-cultural history which can also be enjoyed by general readers. Written with a light touch, it should do a good deal to undermine the myth of the humourless Dutch.' - Peter Burke FBA, Professor of Cultural History, University of Cambridge 'Like all humour of the past, that of seventeenth-century Holland is utterly baffling: too obscure, too topical, too coarse by turns; then again startlingly recognizable, modern, universal. In this insightful analysis of the greatest treasure trove of early modern Dutch jokes, Rudolf Dekker has reconstructed the personalities, issues, virtues, and foibles that occasioned discrete smiles and guffawing laughter in the upper echelons of Dutch society. Dekker's comparative historical approach, which ranges well beyond the Netherlands, restores the currency and the flavour of humour in early modern Europe. We will hear a great deal about the horror of the battlefield. Bourke acknowledges wider truths: war is unending and violence is deeply entrenched in our society. But it doesn''t have to be this way. This new edition has been revised to include a discussion of Venice, Rome, Naples and Florence and their relationship with surrounding courts and smaller provincial towns. Brown provides a fresh insight into some of the main themes of the Renaissance, with humanism now being explored in relation to gender, the position of women and the response of religious reformers to the new ideas. The broad geographical scope, concluding with an examination of diffusion through trade with Constantinople, Portugal and Spain, allows students to fully explore how the Renaissance transformed into a global movement. Key themes, such as humanism, art and architecture, Renaissance theatre and the invention of printing, are illustrated with quotations and exempla, making this book an invaluable source for students of the Renaissance, early modern history and social and cultural history.Table of ContentsPART ONE: INTRODUCTION 1. Book SynopsisCricket is an enduring paradox. On the one hand, it symbolises much that is outmoded: imperialism; a leisured elite; a rural, aristocratic Englishness. On the other, it endures as a global game and does so by skilful adaptation, trading partly on its mythic past and partly on its capacity to repackage itself. This ambitious new history recounts the politics of cricket around the world since the Second World War, examining key cultural and political themes, including decolonisation, racism, gender, globalisation, corruption and commercialisation. Part One looks at the transformation of cricket cultures in the ten territories of the former British Empire in the years immediately after 1945, a time when decolonisation and the search for national identity touched every cricket playing region in the world. Part Two focuses on globalisation and the game's evolution as an international sport, analysing: social change and the Ashes; the campaigns for new cricket formats; the developmTrade ReviewShortlisted for The Cricket Writers’ Club book award 2018"An astonishing piece of deep scholarship and stylish concision. The book possesses a richness and an intellectual grasp far greater than a short review can properly reflect." - Paul Edwards, The Cricketer"The injunction to keep politics out of sport is age-old. Muddle-headed too, as Stephen Wagg's comprehensive comparative history of the politics in cricket demonstrates. This thorough and necessary book should become a standard reference." - Gideon Haigh, Australia's leading cricket writer"Building thoughtfully on the work of the late Mike Marqusee, this is an insightful and richly rewarding labour of love. Astutely structured and deftly researched, the book draws on the author’s deep knowledge of geopolitical reality and how it manifests itself in post-Imperial cricket, enabling an ambitious brief to be admirably met. At times, indeed, you wonder how the game has survived the context in which it is played. If you want to know why cricket is the world’s most racialized, politicised and fascinating ballgame, look no further." - Rob Steen, Senior Lecturer and award-winning sports journalist, University of Brighton, UK"Cricket is one of a few sports where nation vs nation remained a primary contest well into the new millennium. Inexorably tied to a colonial past, cricket also reflected the aspiration of its new nations and nationhoods over the last five decades. In a masterful work of scholarship, Wagg gives us an engaging, comprehensive new history of modern cricket. From the relentless churn of events, achievements and controversies around the cricketing globe, he teases out the sport’s engagements with the zeitgeist: the tussle between the old world and the new, the tumult of race and gender, the advent of "professionalism", globalisation and the corporatisation of cricket. As much as the book is about modern cricket around the world, Wagg has also skilfully identified the world's footprints on modern cricket." - Sharda Ugra, Senior Editor, ESPNcricinfo and ESPN India"Now seems the ideal time for the publication of a book pertaining to the history of how cricket has developed in and out of step with the political and social sphere … Among others, the book is dedicated to the late American writer and political activist Mike Marqusee, and leans heavily on his totemic treatise Anyone but England. Though this book is less polemic than that work, it slots in comfortably next to it on a cricket love’s bookshelf, and loses little in comparison to its relative. There can be little higher praise than that." - WisdenTable of ContentsPart 1: Cricket and the End of Empire 1. Fossilised Reactionaries? English Cricket Since 1945 2. A Nation of Blow-Ins? Book SynopsisThis volume examines the life of Anne of Bohemia, the first queen of Richard II (13771399), and situates her within the context of medieval queenship by arguing that Anne ably fulfilled the political role of the queen consort through her intercession, patronage, and piety.Much previous scholarship on Anne has focused on her relationship with famous poets, such as Geoffrey Chaucer, but from analyzing government documents it becomes clear that Anne used her wealth and status to enact power. Through financial, religious, and cultural patronage, Anne rewarded supporters and servants and influenced court life. The examination of sources such as a letter from Anne to her half brother, and an apothecary bill that contains some fertility medicines suggests that the queen both desired and tried to have children. As such, the volume questions the public imagination of Anne and shows that, in this example, although she died childless, Anne and Richard attempted to have childTable of ContentsIntroduction 1. Book SynopsisHong Kongâs âUmbrella Revolutionâ has been widely regarded as a watershed moment in the polityâs post-1997 history. While public protest has long been a routine part of Hong Kongâs political culture, the preparedness of large numbers of citizens to participate in civil disobedience represented a new moment for Hong Kong society, reflecting both a very high level of politicisation and a deteriorating relationship with Beijing. The transformative processes underpinning the dramatic events of autumn 2014 have a wide relevance to scholarly debates on Hong Kong, China and the changing contours of world politics today. This book provides an accessible entry point into the political and social cleavages that underpinned, and were expressed through, the Umbrella Movement. A key focus is the societal context and issues that have led to growth in a Hong Kong identity and how this became highly politically charged during the Umbrella Movement. It is widely recognised that political and Trade Review'This lucidly written book offers a timely analysis of the various shapes of Hong Kong’s thriving localism. Taylor & Francis The Ashgate Research Companion to Black Sociology

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Ashgate Research Companion to Black Sociology provides the most up to date exploration and analysis of research focused on Blacks in America. Beginning with an examination of the project of Black Sociology, it offers studies of recent events, including the âStand Your Groundâ killing of Trayvon Martin, the impact of Hurricane Katrina on emerging adults, and efforts to change voting requirements that overwhelmingly affect Blacks, whilst engaging with questions of sexuality and family life, incarceration, health, educational outcomes and racial wage disparities.Inspired by W.E.B. Du Boisâs charge of engaging in objective research that has a positive impact on society, and organised around the themes of Social Inequities, Blacks and Education, Blacks and Health and Future Directions, this timely volume brings together the latest interdisciplinary research to offer a broad overview of the issues currently faced by Blacks in United States.A timely, significant research Trade ReviewAs we deepen into the 21st century, there is abundant evidence that Black Sociology is the original American sociology, despite the dominant narratives of the discipline. The contents of Wright II and Wallace’s Ashgate Research Companion to Black Sociology show that not only has Black Sociology continued since its late 19th century beginnings, but, that it is thriving and continuously pushing a rigorous and impactful sociology across every substantive area of the discipline.’ David L. Brunsma, Virginia Tech, USA‘In this necessary and expansive volume, Earl Wright II and Edward V. Wallace build upon the great work and legacy of W.E.B. Du Bois. Drawing on Du Bois’s sociological scholarship and agenda as the leader of the Atlanta Sociological Laboratory, this impressive book successfully brings together a wonderful array of scholars to deepen our understanding and appreciation for Black Sociology.’ Marcus Anthony Hunter, UCLA, USA and author of Black Citymakers: How the Philadelphia Negro Changed Urban America‘The Ashgate Research Companion to Black Sociology is a must-read for anyone teaching introductory sociology, race relations or any related subject. The editors have done a wonderful job of finding young creative scholars to cover contemporary topics such as parental incarceration and its effects on children, stand-your-ground laws, and the effects of job stratification on the working class to name a few. The clustering of the topics along with the origins of Black or Du Boisian Sociology is extremely relevant to the societal changes currently taking place around the world.’ Obie Clayton, Clark Atlanta University, USATable of ContentsPart I Black Sociology: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow 1. Book SynopsisIndia and the Early Modern World provides an authoritative and wide-ranging survey of the Indian subcontinent over the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries, set within a global context. This book explores questions critical to our understanding of early modern India. How, for instance, were Indians' religious beliefs, their ways of life, and the horizons of their learning changing over this period? What was happening in the countryside and towns, to culture and the arts, and to the state and its power? Were such experiences comparable or linked to those in other parts of the world? Can we speak of a global early modernity, therefore, within which India played an important role? Organised thematically, each chapter engages with such key issues, debates, and concepts, covering wide ground as it connects, compares, and contrasts developments witnessed across early modern South Asia to those around the globe.Drawing on the fruits of research in numerous fields over the Table of Contents1. • Early Modern Toleration

Taylor & Francis Ltd Early Modern Toleration

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines the practice of toleration and the experience of religious diversity in the early modern world.Recent scholarship has shown the myriad ways in which religious differences were accommodated in the early modern era (15001800). This book propels this revisionist wave further by linking the accommodation of religious diversity in early modern communities to the experience of this diversity by individuals. It does so by studying the forms and patterns of interaction between members of different religious groups, including Christian denominations, Muslims, and Jews, in territories ranging from Europe to the Americas and South-East Asia. This book is structured around five key concepts: the senses, identities, boundaries, interaction, and space. For each concept, the book provides chapters based on new, original research plus an introduction that situates the chapters in their historiographic context. Book SynopsisThis fourth edition of Putting Psychology in Its Place builds on the previous three in introducing the history of Psychology and placing the discipline within its historical and social contexts. Written by esteemed Psychologists Graham Richards and Paul Stenner, this crucial text aims both to answer and raise questions about the role of Psychology in modern society by critically examining issues such as how Psychology developed and why psychoanalysis had such an impact. It discusses enduring underlying conceptual problems and examines how the discipline has changed to deal with contemporary social issues such as religion, race and gender. The fourth edition features revised and updated chapters, though the core structure remains unchanged. The final chapter has been restructured and jointly re-written. Taylor & Francis Family Oral History Across the World

Book SynopsisFamily Oral History Across the World presents a process for memorializing family histories, bringing together established oral history standards, exploratory research, and narrative data analysis.Based on and using a prequestionnaire and over 40 recorded interviews with people from across six continents, the analysis system used in the book presents material from these interviews that brings alive the experience of the family history journey. One of the guiding principles is to encourage readers to interview family members, but also others outside the family unit, and to produce a family history in whatever format works. The book illustrates this through the inclusion of many unusual formats and stories uncovered. The book is divided into a number of themes that emerged through the analysis of numerical questionnaire and narrative interview data. Parts I, II, and III cover changing family demography, case studies, and factors such as memory, emotion, and ethics. Part ITrade Review'For those interested in capturing their family history before it is lost, this book is the most complete, detailed guide one could desire. Dr. Gordon covers everything from planning to interviewing to media capture; her case studies demonstrate how important such histories can be to descendants seeking to understand their own identities.'Dorothy Leonard, Harvard Business School, USA‘Oral history is a valuable but still underused resource for family history. I would recommend this book to anyone considering its use, both for the wider context in which it is presented and explained here, and the wealth of practical and ethical guidance that it offers.’Cynthia Brown, Freelance Oral Historian, UK'Mary Gordon's book Family Oral History Across the World has finally provided future authors who wish to write their family's story with a step-by-step guide to how to go about it. Mary Gordon has skillfully added fascinating examples of the ways people from various parts of the world have embarked on writing about their families' past and what they have learnt from this experience, weaving these into her 5-phase approach to writing a successful family oral history.'Deirdre Pirro, Journalist and Attorney, The Florentine Newspaper, Italy'Kudos to Dr. Contini-Gordon for her well researched new book on family histories. It is full of enlightening interviews and insights.'Jo Ann Emmerich, TV and Media Executive‘“Family Oral History Across the World” is a fascinating treatise on how the memory of our ancestors is retained for future generations. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores the various ways imperial rule constituted and shaped the cities of Eastern Europe until World War I in the Tsarist, Habsburg, and Ottoman empires. In these three empires, the cities served as hubs of imperial rule: their institutions and infrastructures enabled the diffusion of power within the empires while they also served as the stages where the empire was displayed in monumental architecture and public rituals. To this day, many cities possess a distinctively imperial legacy in the form of material remnants, groups of inhabitants, or memories that shape the perceptions of in- and outsiders. The contributions to this volume address in detail the imperial entanglements of a dozen cities from a long-term perspective reaching back to the eighteenth century. They analyze the imperial capitals as well as smaller cities in the periphery. All of them are imperial cities in the sense that they possess traces of imperial rule. By comparing the three empires of Eastern Europe this volume seeks to establish commonalities in this particular geography and highlight trans-imperial exchanges and entanglements. This volume is essential reading to students and scholars alike interested in imperial and colonial history, urban history, and European history. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons [Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND)] 4.0 license.
