Book SynopsisPersonal Justice Denied tells the extraordinary story of the incarceration of mainland Japanese Americans and Alaskan Aleuts during World War II. Although this wartime episode is now almost universally recognized as a catastrophe, for decades various government officials and agencies defended their actions by asserting a military necessity. The Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment was established by act of Congress in 1980 to investigate the detention program. Over twenty days, it held hearings in cities across the country, particularly on the West Coast, with testimony from more than 750 witnesses: evacuees, former government officials, public figures, interested citizens, and historians and other professionals. It took steps to locate and to review the records of government action and to analyze contemporary writings and personal and historical accounts. The Commission's report is a masterful summary of events surrounding the wartime relocation and detention activities, Table of ContentsPrologue by the Civil Liberties Public Education Fund Foreword Introduction Summary PART ONE: NISEI AND ISSEI Before Pearl Harbor Executive order 9066 Exclusion and Evacuation Economic Loss Assembly Centers Relocation Centers Loyalty: Leave and Segregation Ending the Exclusion Protest and Disaffection Military Service Hawaii Germans and German Americans After Camp Appendix: Latin Americans PART TWO: THE ALEUTS War and Evacuation in Alaska Notes to Parts One and Two PART THREE: RECOMMENDATIONS PART FOUR: PAPERS FOR THE COMMISSION Addendum to Personal Justice Denied Index

Book SynopsisCaptures the voices of Scandinavian men and women who crossed the Atlantic during the early decades of the 20th century and settled in the Pacific Northwest. Based on oral history interviews with 45 Danes, Finns, Icelanders, Norwegians, and Swedes, this book includes background information on Scandinavian culture and immigration.Trade ReviewRasmussen's selections capture the textures and tones of ordinary life. They show how the cultures the immigrants had known in the Old World influenced their reaction to the New World and the way they influenced life in the Pacific Northwest. As Rasmussen notes, the stories 'affirm human experience as the stuff of which the fabric of history and culture is woven.' Storied Lives illuminates a heretofore little-known episode of anti-racist struggle during some of the darkest hours in American democracy." * Pacific Reader *"This significant work illuminates one facet of a story the larger dimensions of which are quite familiar, yet in personalizing the faces depicted in yearbooks and showing how difficult their achievements were, [Okihiro] has rendered an important service to the larger field of Asian American studies." * Journal of American Ethnic History *"This book is a welcome expansion of our knowledge and perspectives about the education of American minority groups." * Journal of American History *"Okihiro explores new territory in the field of Asian-American history by illuminating the story of the Nisei and their selective release from internment camps to attend colleges during World War II. This book reveals the life and the passion for painting of a young woman who was surrounded and supported by her community. It shows a painter whose life and fortune have delivered art work.Trade Review"As long as I have known Gwen, her art has been about making vivid 'observations'--portraits of people, depictions of objects and portrayals of feelings, movements, and memories. She is a keen observer, formally trained as a sculptor and painter to use volume and color as a way of expressing a likeness. Her work is sensitive to nuance but does not have a shred of sentimentality in it. [It] is unsurpassed in breadth, vividness, candor, and historical insight." -- Michael Berkowitz * History of European Ideas *"The unique contribution of Aron Rodrigue’s book is that it provides contemporary images of Jewish life in the Middle Eastern and North African countries during 1860–1939. These descriptions were made by Jews who stayed with these communities for long periods of time or at least were well acquainted with them. Throughout the book Rodrigue places the changing conditions of these communities within the global framework that was instrumental in shaping this transition." * Contemporary Jewry *"Rodrigue provides insight into the life of Jewish communities in Iraq, Iran, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria, Palestine, Algeria, Turkey, Egypt, and Greece. Book SynopsisGary Pak has emerged as one of the most important Asian Hawaiian writers of our time. In this new collection, Pak expertly crafts a memorable cast of Hawai''i''s Korean Americans, Chinese Americans, Japanese Americans, and Native Hawaiians, amplifying our cross-cultural understanding of Hawaiian life today. The nine short stories in Language of the Geckos and Other Stories paint an array of locals caught up in failed dreams of financial success and romantic fulfillment. Many of these stories deal with issues particular to Native Hawaiian perspectives, while others take slice-of-life glimpses at characters alienated in the land of their birth. Pak''s sure narrative voice shifts deftly between his actors, shading the nuanced voices and interior lives of housewives, mechanics, cabdrivers, aging hippies, and desperate bargirls. Most of these characters speak in the lingua franca of the islands, a highly developed Creole that is commonly called Pidgin English. Also strongTrade Review"Pak’s vivid, sometimes shocking imagery and his emotionally complex characters drive home the underlying themes of the nine stories in this slim volume—unfulfilled dreams, failed, lives, and the loss of hope . . . forcing readers to confront a very different Hawai'i—paradise only to some." * Booklist *"Pak’s accessible prose and compassion for his characters vivify the dilemmas of people hobbled by limited means or racial hierarchies." * Publishers Weekly *"Magical realism, Hawaiian-style." * Los Angeles Times *Table of ContentsLiving with Spirits, Writing as Activism: A Preface A House of Mirrors Language of the Geckos Rebirth Hae Soon's Song An Angel for Guy Matsuzaki The Guest My Friend Kammy Ishamel Reed or Me A Memory for Martin

A richly documented and important book which will be useful to students from a range of interdisciplinary fields." * Victorian Studies *"The Tropics and the Traveling Gaze deserves a wide audience. Any historian of biology interested in British imperialism, Romanticism, scientific networks (particularly those linking metropolitan and colonial naturalists) and imperial environmental history will find it an enjoyable, informative, and intellectually stimulating read." * Journal of the History of Biology *"The Tropics and the Traveling Gaze is a valuable book for historians and anthropologists..Despite the vast literature on all the themes presented in the book, none connects these various topics as elegantly as the current volume. This book draws on the author's own decades of experience as a lawyer working with Indian people, and focuses on Billy Frank and the river flowing past Frank's Landing.Trade Review"The author tells a dramatic and complex story with clarity and insight, but his greatest triumph in Messages is that he conveys the inner peace and traditional Indian world view that carries Frank through as an activist and negotiator for Native American rights, and as the spokesperson for the salmon, the river, and the circle of life. Sreenivasan analyzes Padmini's story through its entire narrative trajectory, deploying at once the skills of a historian who combines an understanding of religious thought and social history and those of a literary scholar deeply familiar with gendered tropes in narrative and discourse." * Association for Asian Studies Coomaraswamy prize committee *"A masterful and admirable scholarly achievement. . . .Sreenivasan's singular accomplishment in this meticulously researched account is to demonstrate more convincingly and thoroughly than I have ever seen done before the wonderfully complex entanglements of literature and politics, of history and legend." * Journal of Asian Studies *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Note on Transliteration and Usage List of Maps 1. Book SynopsisChina has a tourist industry, characterized by a style with deep roots in traditional Chinese culture. This title argues that China's brand of tourism is distinct from the traditions of both Western bourgeois tourism, which values authenticity, and Soviet tourism, with its emphasis on rugged and selfless experience.Trade Review"In Scenic Spots, Pál Nyirí provides a highly readable overview of the emergence of commercial tourism in China's reform era. . . . I would certainly recommend Scenic Spots as an introduction to contemporary tourism in China. Book SynopsisOffers a perspective on the colonial stereotype of the exotic Pacific island woman, tracing the evolution of female primitivism from Western antiquity to twentieth-century Hollywood. This book includes 37 illustrations of Pacific women from early etchings by shipboard artists.Trade Review"O'Brien's book contributes to the burgeoning field of studies of gender and sexuality in Pacific Studies at the same time that it broadens the feminist critique of constructions of sexuality and gender… O'Brien allows us to glimpse many fascinating women, including Alice Henriette Handy, a Maori woman who was taken to America by her father, a New England whaling captain; and Maria de los Santos y Castro, a fifteen-year-old girl from Guam who was married to Matthew Mazarro, a Genoese four times her age." * Journal of World History *"The Pacific Muse is highly recommended for anyone interested in Pacific history, the role of the indigenous colonial woman, and the truth behind the 'island girl' smile." -- Debra Youthed * Glory Days Magazine *"The Pacific Muse is a complex historical narrative and O'Brien wields a vast amount of material." * Journal of Folklore Research *"O'Brien's panoramic study on the evolution of the Western notion of the exotic feminine in the Pacific is riveting..The book is essential reading because the Pacific Muse remains alive and well today—- precisely because she continues to serve this role." * Journal of Pacific History *"As a 'gender-focused world history', Patty O'Brien foregrounds the female body in her exploration of the colonial South Pacific. O'Brien takes an overlapping thematic and chronological approach, tracing the production of exotic femininity from its foundations in antiquity through the present day.. [it is] an engaging, wide-ranging, and insightful work, enhanced by the liberal inclusion of excellent images." * BC Studies *"As Patty O'Brien illustrates with almost encyclopedic detail, since their earliest connections with Europeans, Pacific womenhave been portrayed as lascivious, hypersexual, sensual, enticing, and always available. . . . O'Brien's task is to unfold the sexing of the Pacific, from Renaissance representations of the sixteenth century to the celluloid images of the twentieth. . . The research is meticulous." * The Historian *"Patty O'Brien's study offers readers an examination of the role of the feminine in the construction of the Pacific in the western imagination. . . [a] rich and detailed book." * Pacific Historical Review *"The Pacific Muse reaches beyond the words and images that Europeans, particularly European men, painted about women in the Pacific. O'Brien explores the relationship between images of Pacific womanhood and different configurations of imperialism around the region." * Journal of Women's History *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Introduction I. Book SynopsisExplorations of contemporary art have focused on issues of identity and race for some time. Few, however, have sought to investigate these themes by juxtaposing historical and contemporary frameworks. This book examines an especially charged icon - the black female body.Trade Review"Rather than recycling the colonial approach to power and subjectivity, which defines the self through the ridicule of the other, Black Womanhood provides various textual, visual, and personal tactics that can contribute to re-imagining a more humane way forward." * Woman's Art Journal *"Twenty years ago, Barbara Kruger coined her now-infamous slogan, 'your body is a battleground,' in a campaign to increase awareness of how women's bodies are marketed as commodities. Visually stunning and intellectually provocative, Black Womanhood resurrects that dialogue and complicates an embattled body in which blackness is a catalyst, surface, symbol, subject, and object that, while transformative on many levels, continues to appear alarmingly vulnerable to exploitation and stereotyping." * caa.reviews *"A serious academic endeavor, suitable for scholars and the general public alike." * Book News *"This collection of essays is as richly insightful as it is beautifully produced. . . . The originality of the images and interpretations make this catalogue essential to understanding how fully clothed the unclothed body truly is." * Publisher's Weekly *Table of ContentsLenders to the Exhibition Foreword / Brian P.
