  • The Evolution of the Human Mind

Eliot Werner Publications Inc The Evolution of the Human Mind

Book SynopsisIn his eloquent new book Robert Carneiro traces the history of the development of empirical sciencefrom the Paleolithic to the presentvividly describing the major events that have marked a great transition in human thought, and how this affected the human experience.Trade Review 'An enormous achievement. Wherever I landed, whether it was the origin of ‘emergence,’ Einstein’s religion, the death of Platonic views of nature, or the strangely self-contradictory worldview of Julian Huxley, I learned something new. Wise, authoritative, and entertaining!' (Richard Milner, Author of Darwin’s Universe: Evolution from A to Z) 'I think the book is excellent. Easy to read—both because of its writing style and the layout in relatively brief sections. This makes it a pleasure to read—and the subject is so exhilarating! . . . A book to read and then keep for reference.' (Ken Perrott, Open Parachute (http://openparachute.wordpress.com/)) 'Carneiro traces the notion of ‘a thoroughgoing belief in unalloyed supernaturalism toward an attitude in which naturalism played an increasingly greater role’ . . . . The great debate today is between sociobiologists and cultural anthropologists to determine how much of human behavior and thought is genetically programmed and how much is culturally determined. Carneiro is firmly in the cultural camp, and longs for the day when humankind simply pursues truth and no longer seeks religious solace.' (G. M. Smith, Choice) '[I]nteresting and informative. . . . [A] nicely written contribution to understanding the evolution of competing ideas.' (Kenneth M. Weiss, Journal of Anthropological Research) '[A] fine example of how pure anthropology can not only be relevant but powerful! . . . The Evolution of the Human Mind is a skillfully written book that you won’t regret buying. It is destined to be a classic. Carneiro makes direct statements that writers love to cite (and readers love to read).' (Ira R. Wishoff, The Dirt Brothers (http://dirtbrothers.org/)) Prepublication praise . . . 'This insightful overview by a distinguished cultural anthropologist of how humans moved from animistic and supernatural views of the universe, spawned in the infancy of the species, to a naturalistic perspective based on science, is truly inspiring.' (Paul Kurtz, State University of New York at Buffalo) 'Does God exist? What is clear is that theistic beliefs exist, and their origin and development are brilliantly illuminated here. Carneiro’s subtle but enlightening treatment will be a breath of fresh air for all who find answerable questions more interesting than unanswerable ones.' (Robert Bates Graber, Truman State University) 'Carneiro’s erudition is breathtaking as he explores the concept of the soul, the nature of animate supernatural creatures, the emergence of polytheism, and the rise of monotheism. The evolution of the human mind is handled magnificently in this compelling and original book.' (Joyce Marcus, University of Michigan) Table of ContentsChapter 1. 7 in stock

Book SynopsisSeeking to identify the plant origins of the early sacramental beverages Soma and Haoma, this study draws a connection between the psychoactive properties of these drinks and the widespread use of cannabis among Indo-Europeans during this time. Exploring the role of these libations as inspiration for the Indian Rig Veda and the Persian Avestan texts, this examination discusses the spread of cannabis use across Europe and Asia, the origins of the Soma and Haoma cults, and the shamanic origins of modern religion.Trade Review"Scholarly, hip, witty, and extremely well documented . . . this book might cause a revolution in biblical studies!" --Robert Anton Wilson, author, Schrodinger's Cat Trilogy"This book is fanscinating! There can be little doubt about a role for cannabis in Judaic religion . . . there is no way that so important a plant as a fiber source for textiles and nutritive oils and one so easy to grow would have gone unnoticed, and the mere harvesting of it would have induced an entheogenic reaction." --Carp P. Ruck, professor, Boston University"Every cannabis aficionado, patient, and advocate will find something of great value in Chris Bennett's Cannabis and the Soma Solution. The great Jack Herer laid the foundation of our understanding of the foolishness of cannabis prohibition in its modern form: Chris Bennett has performed an invaluable service by proving once and for all that the oldest and greatest spiritual sacrament in human history is cannabis use." -- Treating Yourself (November 2011)"It is a volume that must be read by every scholar who works in the field of biblical studies, world religions, psycho-spirituality, or the history of the paranormal as friend and familiar." J. Harold Ellens, PhD, Institute for Antiquity and Christianity of the Claremont Graduate School"A treasure trove of up-to-date ancient information on cannabis. Highly recommended to round out your library on religious uses of psychoactive drugs." Julie Holland, M.D., editor, The Pot Book: A Complete Guide to Cannabis"I have read Mr. Bennett's several books on this subject and am in general agreement with what he states, especially about the extent to which the Vedic hallucinogen Soma was probably made from cannabis. Indeed, his research has changed my own thinking about this ancient conundrum (heretofore, the majority of scholars have suggested that Soma was prepared from psychotropic mushrooms) . . . . In short, I heartily recommend Bennett's book to anyone seeking a better understanding of this well-nigh universal, albeit all too often misunderstood hallucinogen and its crucial role in the history of human spirituality." C. Scott Littleton, Ph.D., Emeritus professor of Anthropology, Occidental College"Chris Bennett assembles religious, historical, medical and poetic sources with immaculate ease, in order to construct what is sure to be an enduring examination of the global history of cannabis use by widely diverse human populations." Dr. David C.A. Hillman, author, The Chemical Muse: Drug Use and the Roots of Western Civilization"I've enjoyed this book immenselya masterful investigation of religious intoxication cults from ancient India, Persia, Asia Minor, Scythia, and Europe. Refuting R. Gordon Wasson's theory that Soma of the Vedas was Amanita muscaria mushrooms, Bennett shows that Soma was probably a mixture of cannabis, ephedra and poppy (confirmed by Sarianidi's archaeological discoveries in Bactria), and he traces the uses of cannabis as a sacrament through many ancient cultures. This is a must-read for everyone interested in the ancient history of drugs." Michael R. Aldrich Ph.D., author, Marijuana Myths and Folklore"If you are interested in the history of the Indo-Europeans, the history and identification of soma / haoma, or the history of cannabis as a hallucinogen, you owe it to yourself to read Chris Bennett's substantial tome." What’s more important—self-sacrifice or self-definition? Do we ultimately answer to something larger than ourselves—a family, a religion, a troop? Or is our mantra “To thine own self be true”?   Gish Jen shows how our worldviews are shaped by what cultural psychologists call independent and interdependent models of selfhood. Coloring what we perceive, remember, do, make, and tell, imbuing everything from our ideas about copying to our conceptions of human rights, these models help explain why the

Book SynopsisTrade Review“It’s hard to imagine a better person than Mr. Else to tell this story. . . . His book does several things at once. On one level, it’s a biography of Mr. Hampton . . . On another, it’s a lucid recap of many of the signal events of the civil rights movement. . . . True South is a series of braided stories that are each well told . . . [A] warm and intelligent book.”—Dwight Garner, The New York Times“Reading this book feels like reliving the great stories of a legendary party from days gone by, one that continues to inspire. Else, a producer par excellence, is also a talented writer. . . . His memories are rich with detail and surprisingly candid.”—San Francisco Chronicle“Distinguished documentarian and MacArthur fellow Else has written a hard-driving, avidly detailed, and dramatic history of the making of Eyes on the Prize, the pioneering 1987 television documentary series about the civil rights movement. . . . With its many hooks and avenues, compelling portraits, and thought-provoking revelations, this in-depth chronicle of the making of a defining civil rights documentary is an invaluable and timely work.”—Booklist, (starred review)“No one is better suited to write this moving account of perhaps the greatest American documentary series ever made. Jon Else helped film it, and, two decades earlier, as a civil rights worker in the South, he lived through part of the history involved. He tells the story with the compassion and eloquence it deserves.”—Adam Hochschild, author of King Leopold's Ghost, Bury the Chains, and To End All Wars“True South is the powerful story of a singular black man, Henry Hampton, who combined film and social activism to create the first people’s history of the civil rights movement. Jon Else’s insight into Hampton’s struggle to record and show history to a world in denial calls attention to Eyes on the Prize as a true American epic. It is hard not to be moved by this account––by both its author’s and its subject’s contributions to our society. This is truly great and important book, a magisterial chronicle of how we tell the story of the civil rights movement.” —Errol Morris, Academy Award winning director of The Fog of War and The Thin Blue Line “ Eyes on the Prize chronicled the small towns and back roads of the Deep South where the civil rights movement took root and flourished. Jon Else takes readers behind the scenes in the decades-long journey of the late Henry Hampton, Eyes’ visionary creator, and the motley team of us who ended up making history by telling this history. True South captures the blood, sweat and tears of ordinary Americans who fundamentally changed America, and the extraordinary spirit and heart of a man committed to making sure their sacrifice was remembered.” —Callie Crossley, Academy-award-nominated producer of the "Bridge to Freedom" episode of Eyes on the Prize“Jon Else tells the amazing story of how independent filmmaker Henry Hampton overcame enormous obstacles to create the landmark documentary series, Eyes on the Prize. Written by a key member of Hampton's team, True South sheds light on the decade-long effort to transform American history during a crucial period of racial change into moving images that have shaped American historical understanding.” —Clayborne Carson, Martin Luther King, Jr., Centennial Professor of history, Stanford University "In detailing the financial struggle involved and the arduous process of finding interviewees and eliciting their stories, Else reveals the complexities of any such production. An illuminating look at racial strife and TV history."—Kirkus Reviews“Else tells the remarkable story in vivid detail, with some detours into the actual movement history, his own activism in the South in the ‘60s, and the back-and-forth between his Eyes on the Prize work and his career in Hollywood. For anyone more likely to think of Ken Burns than Hampton (or Burns and no one else) when considering historical documentaries, True South sets a proper context."—Pop Matters“In this fascinating book, Else, a producer and cinematographer who worked on the series, braids together Hampton’s story making the series and the dramatic national battle over racial equality that it describes. . . . Adding dimension to this marvelous account, Else . . . intersperses his own work for voting rights and against the Ku Klux Klan.”—The National Book Review "The emotional and factual combination that results from the documentary and the book is powerful and will endure."—Richmond Times-Dispatch

In The World According to Color, James Fox takes seven elemental colorsblack, red, yellow, blue, white, purple, and greenand uncovers behind each a root idea, based on visual resemblances and common symbolism throughout history.Through a series of stories and vignettes, the book then traces these meanings to show how they morphed and multiplied and, ultimately, how they reveal a great deal about the societies that produced them: reflecting and shaping their hopes, fears, prejudices, and preoccupations.Fox also examines the science of how our eyes and brains interpret light and color, and shows how this is inherently linked with the meanings we give

Book SynopsisThe Nature of the Path reveals how a single road has shaped the collective identity of a community that has existed on the margins of larger societies for centuries. Marcus Filippello shows how a road running through the Lama Valley in Southeastern Benin has become a mnemonic device that has allowed residents to counter prevailing histories. Built by the French colonial government, and following a traditional pathway, the road serves as a site where the Ọhọri people narrate their changing relationship to the environment and assert their independence in the political milieus of colonial and postcolonial Africa. Filippello first visited the Yorùbá-speaking Ọhọri community in Benin knowing only the history in archival records. Over several years, he interviewed more than 100 people with family roots in the valley and discovered that their personal identities were closely tied to the community, which in turn was inextricably linked to the history of the road that snakes through the region’s seasonal wetlands. The road—contested, welcomed, and obstructed over many years—passes through fertile farmlands and sacred forests, both rich in meaning for residents.Filippello’s research seeks to counter prevailing notions of Africa as an “exotic” and pristine, yet contrarily war-torn, disease-ridden, environmentally challenged, and impoverished continent. His informants’ vivid construction of history through the prism of the road, coupled with his own archival research, offers new insights into Africans’ complex understandings of autonomy, identity, and engagement in the slow process we call modernization. Book SynopsisAn award-winning scholar explores the sixty-thousand-year history of the Pacific islands in this dazzling, deeply researched account. One of the Best Books of 2021 — Wall Street JournalThe islands of Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia stretch across a huge expanse of ocean and encompass a multitude of different peoples. Starting with Captain James Cook, the earliest European explorers to visit the Pacific were astounded and perplexed to find populations thriving thousands of miles from continents. Who were these people? From where did they come? And how were they able to reach islands dispersed over such vast tracts of ocean?  In Voyagers, the distinguished anthropologist Nicholas Thomas charts the course of the seaborne migrations that populated the islands between Asia and the Americas from late prehistory onward. Drawing on the latest research, including insights gained from genetics, linguistics, and archaeology, Thomas provides a dazzling account of these long-distance migrations, the seagoing technologies that enabled them, and the societies they left in their wake.
