Oneworld Publications Mapping the Darkness
Book SynopsisThe astonishing true story behind sleep science: from staying awake for 115 consecutive hours to living in a cave for 32 daysTrade Review‘A propulsive, utterly engrossing history.’ —New York Times‘By profiling the daring pioneers of sleep science, this fascinating, magisterially researched, and brilliantly written book pulls back the covers on one of the great mysteries of being human: why we spend a full third of our lives engaged in an activity that scientists are only beginning to understand. You'll never think about something you do every night the same way again.’ —Steve Silberman, author of Neurotribes‘Mr Miller has a good eye for a great scientific story… The author is happy to show research as it is really done, indignities and all… For anyone curious about asking the right questions [about sleep], Mr Miller’s book is a good place to start.’ —Economist'It is rare that the history of a scientific field and the emergence of a medical sub-speciality are eloquently summarized in a single volume. In Mapping the Darkness, journalist Kenneth Miller achieves just that, with the tale of how pioneering researchers created the scientific and clinical discipline of sleep...This book engagingly tells the story of a young scientific and medical discipline that is still spreading its wings.' —Nature‘A sweeping journey of discovery about dreams, sleep and the terra incognita of unconsciousness; and a wake-up call about the dangers of chronic exhaustion.’ —Wall Street Journal‘Is there anyone who hasn't—somewhere in the middle of a lost night—pondered the stubborn mystery of sleep? You'll find some of the best answers to that riddle here in Mapping the Darkness: an addictively readable history of the scientists who changed our thinking about the nature and necessity of rest itself.’ —Deborah Blum, author of The Poison Squad‘Combining the best of science writing and biography, Kenneth Miller spins a gripping story of how we have come to understand sleep from its basic biology to its impact on personal and public health.’ —Daisy Hernández, author of The Kissing Bug‘Thoroughly researched and admirably rendered, Mapping the Darkness is a must-read for anyone who has thought about sleep or the lack thereof.’ —Charlotte D. Jacobs, author of Jonas Salk: A Life‘In Mapping the Darkness, Kenneth Miller reveals the captivating story of how a quartet of scientists invented sleep science and set the stage for today’s revolt against the epidemic of sleep deprivation… Don’t start reading this book right before bed, or you will be so engrossed you may stay up all night.’ —Laura J. Snyder, author of The Philosophical Breakfast Club‘Eye-opening… The biographical background humanises the scientific history, and Miller excels at drawing out the real-world implications of the research… Readers will have no problem staying alert through this fascinating scientific history.’ —Publishers Weekly, starred review‘An interesting examination of an issue that affects us all. Miller shows us how a good night’s sleep came to be recognized as critical for health and development.’ —Kirkus

Cambridge University Press The Neuroscience of Sleep and Dreams
Book SynopsisThe Neuroscience of Sleep and Dreams provides comprehensive coverage of the basic neuroscience of both sleep and dreams for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students. Unlike other introductory texts, it emphasizes the social nature of sleep and dreams, and links the latest science to established evolutionary theory.Trade Review'This book offers neuroscience's cutting-edge answers to age old questions about sleep and dreams. Patrick McNamara explains research findings in enough detail for the beginner, but with enough depth for the practicing neuroscientist who wants to catch up on these areas. I recommend it enthusiastically to all who want a solid scientific perspective on sleep and dreams.' Deirdre Barrett, author of The Committee of Sleep and Pandemic Dreams'In our increasingly sleep- and dream-deprived world, McNamara's book stands out as a refreshing, authoritatively sourced, and decidedly engaging introduction to the neuroscience of sleep and dreaming. Part textbook and part trade book, it appeals both to serious students of sleep/dream science and to the educated lay public. This second edition of an already successful book adds considerable new material germane to explaining the neurobiology and functions of sleep and dreaming across the lifespan and how these phenomena are central to the promotion of a healthy lifestyle.' Tore Nielsen, University of Montreal, Canada'This book is a wonderfully accessible and much needed resource for students, teachers, and the general public. The sleep and dream sciences are rapidly expanding but have been underrepresented in psychology and neuroscience textbooks for higher education. This volume goes a great distance toward filling this gap! Adding to the solid background in sleep science provided in the first edition, this second edition presents many of the newer findings in this burgeoning field. Dr McNamara's fascinating incorporation of social and evolutionary neuroscience is certain to further engage readers from diverse backgrounds.' Edward F. Hodder & Stoughton It's Never too Late to Sleep Train: The low
Book SynopsisA revolutionary program that will have everyone - babies, toddler and pre-schoolers - in the house sleeping through the night. When Dr. Craig Canapari became a father, he realized that even three years of 36-hour hospital shifts didn't prepare him for the extreme sleep deprivation that comes with parenthood. Sleepless nights for kids means sleepless nights for the rest of the family-and a grumpy group around the breakfast table in the morning. In It's Never Too Late to Sleep Train, Canapari harnesses the power of habit to chart a clear and concise path through this crowded, noisy world. The result is a streamlined two-step sleep training plan that focuses on cues and consequences, the two elements that shape all habits and that take on special importance in the case of children. In crisp conversational prose, Dr. Canapari distils years of clinical research and experience to make sleep training refreshingly simple and stress-free. The book is aimed at children between 6 months and early primary school age, who some falsely believe are outside the optimal "window" for sleep training. Dr. Canapari is here to prove that it's never too late. He's on your side in this battle against bedtime, and now parents and children alike can expect a lifetime of healthy sleep. As recommended by Emma Bunton in Mama You Got This.

Nova Science Publishers Inc New Research on Sleep and Sleep Disorders
Book SynopsisNew Research on Sleep and Sleep Disorders first addresses how excessive daytime sleepiness is highly prevalent among patients with type 2 diabetes and has been associated with poorer glycemic control. Daytime sleepiness is also associated with cognitive and attention impairment which may lead to sub-optimal self-management and increased medication errors in patients with type 2 diabetes. Sleep dysfunction has multiple causes in critically ill patients, some of which are extrinsic to the patient and some which are intrinsic to the patient. The disruption of sleep can further destabilize a patient or complicate their ICU course. In one study, the authors use a network analysis technique to create networks for each of the four "insomnia identity" groups. These findings may help to further understand the role of daytime sleepiness in different insomnia phenotypes and to better target the clinical intervention. Additionally, the results of a Multiple Sleep Latency Test carried out in forty patients diagnosed with narcolepsy-1 are presented, and protocol is reviewed. Later, the role of upper cervical spine morphology in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with obstructive sleep apnea is examined. It is suggested that upper cervical spine morphology contributes to phenotypic differentiations between types of obstructive sleep apnea and thereby to its diagnosis, subdivision and treatment. Some useful knowledge obtained by analyzing the acoustic properties of snoring sounds and the morphological properties of oropharyngeal soft tissues is presented. Snoring sounds and oropharyngeal soft tissues are directly or indirectly related to the severity of sleep apnea syndrome. Many researchers are moving their attention towards the development of applications for the smartphone related to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. As such, this compilation analyzes and investigates the functionality of the most accredited apps available for smartphones. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery recommend surgery as an option for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, when non-invasive treatments such as CPAP or oral appliances have not been successful. Surgical treatment is more effective when there is an evident anatomical deformity that can be corrected to alleviate the respiratory obstruction. The concluding study focuses on drugs which induce sleep, such as propofol and dexmedetomidine. Drug-induced sedation endoscopy is a relatively simple way to explore obstruction sites during induced sleep and to give the most precise indication for surgery.

Book SynopsisSleep can be viewed as a brain state, as a process and a behavior. As any of these, sleep serves several purposes, including energy restoration, immunocompetence, brain metabolic homeostasis, neural ontogenesis and, importantly, cognitive, emotional and social processing. Supported by a strong empirical backbone focused on contemporary research outlining links between these subjects, this book will offer a guide to state-of-the-art research of sleep mechanisms, its impact in many cognitive and affective features as well as brief but in-depth overview of the strong association between sleep and social interactions. The complexity behind the common mechanisms between sleep, cognition and emotion, reveal that only through an integral approach in its study at both a neuroanatomical, functional, clinical and social level can reveal how this interplay influences human and furthermore, of mammal homeostasis as whole. Also, we intend to shed a light on the complex relationships between sleep and specific psychiatric disorders, thereby informing both prevention and clinical intervention. In order to provide clear guidance for researchers, the book also outlines future directions for the continued advancement of our understanding of sleep. We aim to balance the breadth and depth of available information to provide a resource that is accessible for upper-level seminars within academic settings, while serving as a practical guide for established scholars studying and treating conditions related to the interplay between sleep, cognition and emotion.Table of ContentsPreface; Basic Mechanisms in Sleep Regulation; Neuroendocrinology of Sleep; Effects of Menopause on Sleep-Waking Cycle; Amygdala Oscillations and Plasticity during Sleep; Altered Behavior and Cortical Activity during Sleep in Neurodegenerative Disorders and Non-Invasive Neuromodulatory Techniques as a Possible Treatment; Effects of Environmental Pollution on Sleep; Mental and Cognitive Phenomena during Sleep and Dreams; Affect, REM Sleep and Dreams: Towards Emotional Insight; Analysis of Sexual Oneiric Experiences by Gender and Sexual Orientation; Sleep Disturbances in Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Patients; Effect of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on Sleep and Behavioral Disorders in Patients with Autism; Developmental Mode and REM Sleep in Mammals Show Correlated Evolution; Index.

Book SynopsisSleep breathing disorders represent one of the most important factors that influence prognosis in critical patients, directly as an initial cause or indirect process that deteriorates after admission to the Intensive Care Units. Despite this known association, there is little scientific information in key practical questions. For example, how does one approach and diagnose sleep breathing disorders in critical care medicine? How can one measure these associations in patients under non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation? During weaning from mechanical ventilation, extubation process, or prevention extubation failure, and finally, their association with short- and long-term prognosis in medical and postoperative critically patients. In this scenario, they are of great interest to understand these associations In this book, we analyse the rationale for diagnosis and treatment in critically mechanically ventilated, from non-invasive, invasive and weaning from mechanical ventilation process, treatments, protocols and follow-up patients' recommendations. The high prevalence of sleep breathing disorders increment critically mechanical ventilated patients, new forms of invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation justify as multidisciplinary perspective this book, useful for pulmonologists, critical care and anaesthesiologist.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Children and Sleep: Management, Health Effects
Book SynopsisThis book begins by delineating the measurement tools currently available to evaluate sleep problems in children and adolescents: polysomnography, actigraphy, sleep diaries, and questionnaires. Continuing, this collection unpacks the complexities of the most common sleep disorders affecting children and adolescents by discussing the child-specific features, etiology, common comorbidities, and differential diagnostic considerations pertinent for each disorder. The authors summarize the importance of a healthy sleep cycle in normal brain development during childhood and the effects of sleep disturbances on normal brain function and brain structure. Additionally, possible associations between sleep disturbances in children and emotional/behavioural problems are addressed, based on a suggestion that these symptoms are not the emerging manifestations of an underlying disorder but rather are a network of symptoms that are causally interrelated. In closing, the authors highlight the importance of identifying the causes of mouth breathing and obstructive sleep apnea in children. If left untreated, such breathing disorders can progress to more severe conditions in adulthood. Nova Science Publishers Inc Sleep Apnea Syndrome: Research Trends
Book SynopsisSleep apnea or sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder characterised by pauses in breathing during sleep. These episodes, called apneas (literally, "without breath"), each last long enough so one or more breaths are missed, and occur repeatedly throughout sleep. There are two distinct forms of sleep apnea: Central and Obstructive. Breathing is interrupted by the lack of effort in Central Sleep Apnea, but from a physical block to airflow despite effort in Obstructive Sleep Apnea. In Mixed Sleep Apnea, both types of events occur. Regardless of type, the individual affected with sleep apnea is rarely (if ever) aware of having difficulty breathing, even upon awakening. Sleep apnea is recognised as a problem by others witnessing the individual during episodes, or is suspected because of its effects on the body (sequelae). This book presents important new research in this field.
