  • Model Boat Building The Menhaden Steamer

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Model Boat Building The Menhaden Steamer

Book SynopsisMenhaden steamers were double framed, heavily built offshore fishing boats in use during much of the 20th century. As the name implies, they were used to catch menhaden, a member of the herring family used for bait, oil, and fertilizer. Powered by diesel or steam hundreds of these boats fished the waters of the eastern United States, from Maine to the Gulf of Mexico. It was a huge industry employing thousands of people working. During the World Wars many menhaden steamers were pressed into service for the U.S. Navy, searching for submarines among other duties. Today these boats are gone, the plants mostly closed or torn down, and the men retired, but this new book, by boat modeler Steve Rogers, captures the memory of the boat, and allows the reader to recreate it in 1/2-inch scale, resulting in a 56-inch model. With clear drawings, plans, and step-by-step illustrated instructions, the reader moves from carving the hull master, through the authentic steps of construction, to the final p

Schiffer Publishing Ltd The Boaters Weather Guide

Book SynopsisSooner or later everyone who ventures out on the water will encounter strong winds and confused seas, fog, thunderstorms, or heavy rain. This book acquaints boaters with the forces that shape weather, allowing them to predict what changes can be expected. Part I presents a logical explanation of climate and weather, concentrating on those aspects that affect the mariner the mostwind speed and direction, low visibility, thunderstorms, gales, and hurricanes. The second part, which can be read independently, deals with the effects of climate and weather on the boater without delving into the whys and whereforesa practical approach for those who want only the needed facts.

  • Law of Tug Tow and Pilotage

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Law of Tug Tow and Pilotage

Book SynopsisIn its first two editions by the late Alex L. Parks, this work achieved a worldwide reputation as the authority on the maritime laws that relate to the towing industry and pilotage. The current editor has continued in that fine tradition. Nowhere has the law related to marine transportation of goods by tug and tow and harbor towage and pilotage been treated in greater depth. The citations are presented in a useful form, giving precedence to the AMC cites most commonly used by the admiralty practitioner; the essence of the holdings of cases is enclosed in parentheses following the citation. Providing the professional practitioner with a ready source of reference to this area of the maritime world, the book treats the concepts of the field by tracing their derivation in admiralty law. Also included with the analysis of each topic is a thorough survey of case law. In this edition new case citations have been added, updating the law where there have been changes and reflecting the inev
