Debbie's flair for design and eye for fresh, beautiful fabrics make these home accessories that readers will make to run up for themselves.Trade ReviewIssue 44 Debbie Shore started her career as a children's tv presenter, became an actress and needlecraft demonstor, and is now a bestselling author with a column in a popular magazine. Having been passionate about sewing for sewing for 50 years, I think we can safely say she knows a thing or two about it! Her latest sewing handbook is packed full of creative ideas for recycling left over pieces of cotton fabric into 30 pretty but practical hand and machine sewn projects that won't break the bank. The only rule is that each piece of fabric must be less than half a yard long (although some use several pieces in combination). Basic sewing techniques are explained at the start, and each project is accompanied byu step-by-step instructions and easy to follow photographs. Chapters are dedicated to the living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom and picinics. With ideas for storage, table decorations, kitchen accessories, gifts/accessoriesand picnic fare there's something for everyone inside. * Reloved *October 2014 If you sew you will invariably end up with lots of small pieces of fabric, some of which are quite large – but seldom more than half a yard. Here is a whole book of projects for those leftovers so at last you can start to whittle down that teetering pile… I like the way you don’t need much to make the items in this book, and if you sew you will already have everything you need – a great start! The book is organized into rooms, and although the bathroom gets missed out the final “room” is outdoors in the shape of picnic time. The Contents page is illustrated with small pictures showing each project, a touch that makes it easy to choose exactly what you want to make. Decorate a tablecloth with yo yos, make cushions, mats, decorations, bunting, napkins and rings, boxes and baskets. If you have never done any sewing before this is not the best place to learn but you don’t need much know-how to make these mostly simple pieces, nor do you need a lot of time as most are fairly small. Each project has staged instructions with both captions and photographs, as well as a list of what you need and a larger photo of the finished item. The author has mostly used pretty delicate pastels which give a cheerful summery appearance but which would be suitable for all year round. Many projects would make great gifts, if you could bear to part with them! A lovely and inspiring book to make your stash go further. * Myshelf.com *October 2014 Debbie Shore is back with another great little book showing you what to make with half a yard or less of fabric. Simply mix and match the faces and bodies to create a first-class collection of characters! * Sew Magazine *I particularly like the templates at the back of the book and help on drawing faces. Anyone who enjoys art and being creative would find this book very interesting. Before reading this book, I never knew a cloth doll could be so expressive! Customer Review Angela Merritt * Customer Review *I was excited to receive a review copy of this book by Ray Slater book from the publishers, Search Press. It’s a new area for me, but combining textiles with painting would broaden my skills especially in the latter area. The book starts with materials and tools needed and moves onto inspiration and design. She takes her inspiration from many sources – anything with a human face, such as portraits, sculpture, paintings, film, and fashion. Slater’s design development is so logical and developed in small steps which can be followed easily. She then moves onto drawing faces and provides plentiful diagrams of how to draw each feature – eyes, noses, mouth, eyebrows. A great feature of this book are the galleries – copious drawings of facial features in different styles – simple faces, long faces, square faces etc. Some are fantasy/ decorative while others are realistic. Faces can be formed in several ways. Flat fabric can be shaded by painting. They can be further developed by needle sculpting. Or they can be totally 3D, with features such as noses and moustaches made separately and sewn on. Ways to add hair? That's there, as is adding real eyelashes. All those techniques are shown and explained. Throughout the second half of the book Slater has examples to inspire you, showing design sheets as well as finished faces. The book isn’t primarily about doll making as it concentrates on how to construct faces. However towards the end she discusses – again in depth – how to make basic doll shapes and includes templates for this. She also has a plethora of templates for faces. This book gives me the confidence to expand on my textiles and sewing activities, and to be creative in a new way. It’s the most exciting book I’ve seen in a long time and one I would purchase. Definitely recommend this. -- Customer Review * Amazon *Whether creating a doll or incorporating faces within your embroidery Ray Slater's new book is full of inspiration. It is full of tips on how to get that unique look. Ray explains that it all begins with the design, and she proves that faces are not as scary as you might think. [...] There are plenty of examples in their various categories, line drawing, realistic faces and decorative faces ... Ray finishes the book with a quick workshop on making a basic doll, with plenty of templates of the suggestions to encourage all ages to have a go. This book deserves a place on the bookshelf of everyone who is young at heart and still enjoys doll. I know that copy will end up on mine. -- Anne Rowell * Book Threads Magazine *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Face & doll-making notions 8 Materials 10, Tools 12, Drawing & colouring equipment 14 Inspiration & design 16 Influences, sources & styles 18, Developing a design 20 Designing & colouring a face 22 Proportions of the face 24, Drawing eyes 26, Drawing noses 34, Drawing mouths 37, Shading a realistic face 40, Gallery of simple line faces 42, Gallery of realistic faces 45, Gallery of decorative faces 50, Designing a collage face 53 Face-making techniques 56 Flat faces 58, Dimensional faces 68, Extra head details 82, Collage faces 88 Basic doll-making techniques 102 Before you begin 104, Basic bodies 106, Basic collage bodies 114 Templates 116

Book SynopsisIn this first book in her new Sewing Room Secrets series, Debbie Shore walks you through every aspect of machine sewing, revealing her top tips and providing in-depth and helpful guidance every step of the way. Starting by looking at sewing room essentials, Debbie then guides you around your sewing machine and explains all the tools and materials you might need, including wadding/batting, interfacing, fabrics and threads. There’s a handy troubleshooting section to reassure and guide you when you encounter problems. Debbie covers the key techniques you need to know, including inserting zips and piping, using shirring elastic, free-motion embroidery and appliqué. Debbie’s focus is on craft and home items, but she also includes some dressmaking and quilting tips for those looking to explore other areas. The ten beautiful projects help you learn the techniques as you progress through the book, beginning with a simple pincushion before moving on to a pillow cover, a tablet case, a drawstring bag, a sewing machine mat and more.Trade ReviewFirstly it’s a beautifully-produced book, thick glossy pages with lovely pictures. More importantly it is absolutely perfect for a beginner as it explains sewing terminology - bias binding zips, pockets and equipment needed. An expert in sewing would love the book as a handy go to for more tips and hints and maybe find ways of making their projects that bit more professional, for example zip placements on cushion covers. The patterns included are versatile and something you could use for many occasions. I love the toaster cover! -- Emma Cropper * Customer review *This book explains each technique carefully, accompanied by useful photos. There are also 10 projects which use those techniques, again with stage by stage instructions and more photos. At the start of each project there is a list of the skills that will be used. Although I was already familiar with some of the techniques, there were others that I was pleased to be reminded of and some that were new to me. There is also a useful introductory section which includes, for example, the different types of wadding available and what they are ideal for. This would be an ideal book for anyone at the beginning of their sewing journey, but there is also plenty here for those of us who have more experience. As a dressmaker, I am pleased to see sections on quilting, bag making and free-motion embroidery which would extend my skills. Overall I feel that this is a well thought out book with lots of useful tips and techniques. -- Chris Constable * Customer review *Step by step approach to sewing. Clearly laid out with some lovely projects to work on. Great for a sewing novice who wants to improve their skills! -- Sarah Counter * Customer review *This is a beautiful, inviting book to read. I have quite a bit of sewing experience but I still found lots of enlightening content, such as areas on free motion embroidery (which I’ve always avoided!) and piping explained in Debbie’s usual clear terminology. The section on zips is useful and clearly illustrated which is helpful as I forget some of them if I’ve not done one for some time. It’s a great book for refreshing techniques if like me you’ve done some sewing before but would be very helpful for those starting out as everything is clearly written. The projects are cute, not taxing but good for practising the techniques. The colour photos are fab. All in all, I would thoroughly recommend this lovely book to every one interested in sewing. -- Rosemary Covell-London * Customer review *Debbie is the person who got me into sewing, the way she explains things makes it seem so simple, like you are listening to a friend! This book covers so many aspects for a beginner, or even someone returning to sewing who wants to refresh their knowledge. It includes information on thread, fabric, interfacing, sewing feet and tools, different types of stitches on a sewing machine, piping, bag making and tutorials for zips, seams and applique that can be applied to several projects. There are also ten tutorials for actual projects, such as a pin cushion, cushion cover and tablet case to name a few! -- Charlene Merrall * Customer review *Brilliant book - exactly what I needed to revitalise and improve on my outdated and rusty skills. Debbie Shore is a star!! -- Trish Evans * Customer review *In her latest book Debbie invites the reader into her own sewing room, to explore the tools and equipment, fabric and threads that she uses, and to share her sewing secrets, hints and tips. She presents ten gorgeous projects, each with detailed step-by-step instructions. Be it a simple pincushion, a toaster cover or tablet case, each project showcases a different technique, such as applique, or piping or inserting a zip, designed to expand knowledge and build confidence and the completed item makes an attractive addition for the home or a perfect gift. This book is ideal for the new sewer, or for those wishing to build their skills. Excellent value for money. * East Kent Embroiderers’ Guild *As it says on the cover, this book contains “top tips and techniques for successful sewing”. I expected a book for beginners and this is all that, but there is also plenty of use for experienced machine users too. There are useful tips for buying a machine to start with, complete with a diagram of a typical basic model with all the parts named. Troubleshooting and maintenance advice follows, along with a guide to common types of foot and needle. Discover what basic items you need and why you need them, plus a guide to different fabric types…I certainly wish I had had this book when I was starting out! Other topics covered include threads, interfacing, wadding, toy filler and even storage. I don’t own all of the items listed in the Tools section so don’t worry if you don’t either; this is very much a personal list but a good book like this tells you what is out there so you can decide what you need. The rest of the book takes you through a number of basic techniques from basic seams to putting in a zipper, using piping, making pleats and hemming. This is not only a book for the garment maker as there are also tips for quilters, toy makers, free machine embroiderers and of course no Debbie Shore book would be complete without a section on bags. There are some projects to try out your new skills including a tablet case, toaster cover, bolster pillow and several bags. All techniques and projects have staged photographs and I confess I learned a lot (and unlearned a few bad habits). Modern materials are covered too so you can find out how to put in a bag frame, apply snaps and bag locks. Throughout the book there are numerous sections of tips and jargon busters, so even if you know nothing about sewing you will by the end of the book. This is a really useful book that belongs on the keeper shelf of anybody who owns (or plans to buy) a sewing machine. -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *Some people prefer to embroider using a machine and in this comprehensive guide to machine sewing Debbie explains how to use a sewing machine to create free-motion embroidery. There is the added bonus that if you have a machine sitting unused, or you wish to use a machine to create other things this book really is a very useful guide to getting the best out of your machine. * Hot Brands Cool Places *What Debbie Shore does with her fabulous new book Sewing Room Secrets is take the sewist back to basics. Her Sewing Room Secrets: Essential Skills for Dressmakers not only feature 10 projects to try your hand at, she also gives you tricks for altering and upcycling garments you already have in your closet. * Crafts Beautiful *Before opening this book, I expected it was going to be a beginner’s guide to working with commercial patterns. This is very useful, but there are quite a few of these already on the market, so what’s new with this one? A better description is that this is a beginner’s guide to making garments for the 21st century dressmaker. Not only does it give helpful tips for working with patterns, it also tells you how to upcycle clothes you already own or have bought from charity shops and how to make repairs. You don’t even have to buy your fabric from fabric stores. I was instantly hooked by all this. Starting from scratch is great, but what about all the resources already in existence? Looking after our planet should come first whatever we are doing, and this is very much a book for the modern, responsible crafter. The book starts by having a look at what tools and supplies you need to purchase before embarking on your new hobby. What machine feet and needles you require, sewing box basics and choosing a machine. Learn about fabrics and different types of interfacing as well as how to choose garments in charity shops for repurposing. Measure yourself, decode pattern terminology and learn the basic skills such as cutting out, pattern positioning, what symbols mean and fabric preparation. The rest of the book contains several projects that teach you more skills as you make them from putting in elastic to pockets, closures, and appliqué. Draft your own basic pattern for a loose-fitting kimono jacket, attach a skirt to a jumper and make a sweater dress, make a skirt from a man’s shirt, and use a length of cloth for a simple wrap skirt. Mend your own jeans and make a poorly fitting blouse fit by adding some darts. This is dressmaking with the lid blown off, freed from rules and too much reliance on brand new resources. I’m not a beginner but I have a lot to learn from this book. Book SynopsisLearn how to make and embellish six fabulous felt hats. 'A chic hat elevates any outfit and always draws compliments. I treasure my unique Bobbi Heath hat and now, thanks to her book, I can create my own from scratch at home. Bobbi is a natural teacher, she provides clear and easy-to-follow instructions and makes millinery fun.' - Susanna Brown - Curator, Victoria and Albert Museum A stunning felt hat is the perfect accessory for any occasion – from an everyday addition to your winter wardrobe to a head-turning statement piece for a special occasion. In this practical and informative guide, expert milliner Bobbi Heath shows you how to make felt hats in six different styles to perfectly complement any outfit, including a fabulous floppy hat, cloche, bucket, pill box, cap and button. Bobbi starts with the basics of how to measure your head, then talks you through the secrets of stiffening the felt, using steam to mould your fabric, and blocking. Learn invaluable stitching and edging techniques, then have fun experimenting with trimmings to make your hat unique. With a foreword by Dillion Wallwork, a London hat designer and prominent milliner for over 30 years, this practical book will appeal to all hat lovers and anyone looking for an easy introduction to the art of millinery.Trade ReviewNo invitation to the Royal Ascot horse race meeting? Head coverings not in vogue for an upcoming social event? Even if millinery isn’t de rigueur these days, UK maker (and selfproclaimed "Mad Hatter") Heath will change the fashion rules. This seductive how-to tome could make even a non-DIYer interested in hatmaking. Heath's six designs represent twenty-first century patterns, even though their origins might be reminiscent of the Downton Abbey or Jackie Kennedy eras. Techniques are fairly easy to master, like sewing straight stitches or wielding a steam iron, and the actual how-tos are well visualized, with step-by-step color photographs and lengthy captions as good guidelines. Running commentary that educates and delights is an added bonus, like on the use of mercury in the curing of felt for hats until 1941, causing the "madness" associated with makers. The practice stopped with the government’s requisition of mercury as a heavy metal for war instruments. Hats off! -- Barbara Jacobs * Booklist *Making Felt Hats is described as 'a beginner's guide to creating six stunning styles for all occaisions'. Search Press Ltd Dressmaking: The Easy Guide: Mix and Match

Book SynopsisCreate bespoke garments that fit and flatter! In this comprehensive, informative book, Helen explains how to create beautiful, customized dresses for every shape and size. Choose the exact size that fits and flatters you from a bespoke sizing chart that takes into account differences in body size across bust, waist and hips. Trace off your pattern pieces, then create a sample (toile) in calico which you can then adapt to create the dress of your dreams, in your own choice of fabulous fabric. There are four style options each for sleeves and necklines, including a flared sleeve, a capped sleeve, a sweetheart neckline or a boatneck; and five skirt options, including a fitted pencil-style skirt, a zhuzhy circle skirt, and an A-line, with or without pleats. You can also choose to add a sweet, classic Peter Pan collar, or inseam pockets, to your garment. Alternatively, you can even create a skirt as a separate garment, simply by adding a waistband or facing. The language of sewing and dressmaking is demystified at the beginning of the book, as well as the equipment you need to get started. Nothing is left unexplained; and stunning images of the finished dresses, on a mannequin and on a model, are interspersed throughout the book to inspire your own finished pieces. Extra copies of the full-size pattern sheets/pattern templates exclusive to Dressmaking: The Easy Guide by Helen Rhiannon are available here.Trade ReviewFashion designer Rhiannon (Sew Perfect Pets) serves up a solid introduction to sewing dresses. 'Must-have' tools include a sewing machine, pattern paper, and hand-sewing needles for attaching buttons. When selecting fabrics, Rhiannon recommends cotton for its affordability, crepe for its softness, and polyester satin for mimicking the sheen of silk on a budget. The author walks through how to make a sleeveless dress from the full-sized pattern sheets included with the book, offering extensive instruction on customizing the design with a curved or boatneck neckline, flared or butterfly sleeves, a fitted or gathered skirt, a collar, or pockets. Inclusivity is emphasized throughout; pattern sheet sets are provided in 19 different sizes she has devised and Rhiannon offers tips on adjusting a dress bodice for wheelchair users (the front should be shortened and the back lengthened 'for a more comfortable fit'). The thorough advice sometimes borders on the obvious ('Close your eyes and put your hands on your waist and this is usually the right spot,' she writes on determining where to take one’s waist measurement), but the prose is encouraging ('We need to accept what we are born with... this is what makes us unique'), and the numerous ways to mix and match design components allow for ample customization. This primer gets the job done. * Publishers Weekly *Helen’s method goes back to basics and the book introduces what sewing tools you will find useful, a short introduction to the sewing machine and some simple sewing techniques to get you started if you are a beginner. She also explains about different fabric types you might choose for a particular garment and provides translation for the sometimes confusing terminology used in sewing! The book offers a very comprehensive introductory section and will provide a useful reminder for all levels of sewist. The key to this book lies in discarding conventional high street sizing and taking measurements of YOUR body. Helen explains how to take comprehensive measurements of your own figure and some extra useful measurements too, with a handy chart you can copy and use. I love that Helen has included measurements of real women so you can see her method in action. Read the full review here. -- Julie Briggs * www.thesewingdirectory.co.uk *This book is a little different in its approach to teaching you how to sew! For example, Helen explains how to measure yourself but she has used ‘real people’ to show sizing in practice and how to choose a size when you don’t fall between the pattern’s sizing. There’s also an in-depth section of adapting patterns (after all no pattern will fit you perfectly without!). Each garment detail like sleeves, pockets, necklines etc. is covered individually making it a good book to dip in and out of. The flow of this book makes perfect sense and is in an order that makes it easy to follow. It’s a great book to sit by your sewing machine when you need to re-affirm a technique too! * The Pattern Pages, Issue 33 *Create beautiful, customized dresses for every shape and size. • Sew Cute Toys: 24 Gifts to Make and Treasure

Search Press Ltd Sew Cute Toys: 24 Gifts to Make and Treasure

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisSew cuddly comfort toys to love and last for a lifetime! There are 24 dolls and toys to make, for very young children all the way up to adults. The cast of dolls and toys are intended as fast friends from early childhood - including a marmot plushie and a friendly cat to cuddle - as well as practical gifts for babies and young children - such as a teething ring and a pyjama bag - right up to comfort toys for older children and adults - a perennially popular sloth and a pillow in the shape of a raccoon! There are also character dolls to make, including a superhero and a pretty geisha, so you can build up a big, colourful family of cuddly friends. The book explains the essential sewing terms and stitches required to make the toys, and the clear, detailed descriptions and diagrams of each project mean that they are easy to follow even if you are a novice sewist.Trade ReviewI have one word to describe most of the projects in this book – simplistic. There are some lovely patterns in this book, the projects are all well illustrated and very easy to follow mainly because instructions for construction are not too complicated, and the facial features require simple embroidery stitches with many faces following similar patterns. Also some patterns require a range of simple skills in sewing, embroidery and knitting and the Tips pages give all the details on how to tackle these skills as well as explaining all the tools and materials needed. The photos are lovely and clear so you know exactly what you’re working towards and the text is in a crisp clear font. The toys are grouped into four Sections of the book ranging from Toys for Young Children, Comfort Toys to Character Dolls. Character Dolls look to be aimed at older children or adults because I really liked the patterns on offer in this section. The way the faces are to be embroidered and the type of doll to be made are really delightful – Elegant Anna and Pretty Geisha are two dolls I am tempted to make for myself. There are some cute toys in the Toys for Young Children section and they are so simple to construct, for example the Little Elephant project is pretty much two pattern pieces sewn together, and this pattern doesn’t necessarily need to be enlarged. Which brings me to the one downside of this book. The majority of the pattern pieces drawn in the book need to be enlarged before starting on the project. The patterns call for enlargement from anywhere between 180% to 400% and if, like me, you have a simple home printer/copier without an enlargement functionality there are only two projects, the Baby Bear and the Bear Pyjama Bag, that can be made without enlargement. Unless, of course, you are happy to make the projects to the pattern sizes as drawn in the book, as I would be with the Little Elephant project. I think for 24 projects this book gives value for money but there may be an added cost in getting the pattern pieces enlarged. -- Juliet * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *I think this book has some sweet projects in that would make lovely gifts for kids. There is step by step written instructions which is ok but I would have loved pictures at each stage to make it easier to follow. I\'m also not a fan of have to copy the stencil & size up then print. I do prefer full size patterns I can just use, trace & use. Its just personal preference. The projects however are cute & will make some lovely gifts for children at Xmas & Birthday\'s. I did like the section with the instruction\'s & pictures showing how to cast on & pearl in the knitting section. I found that clear to understand. I would say as long as you don\'t mind printing all your patterns out then this is a great book to have as it has a lot of projects to get you going & they are so cute -- Pauline * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *Sew Cute Toys By Karine Thiboult. Published by Search press October 2023 This book was of great interest to me as a designer of ‘Memory Animals’ I just loved the front cover of the book, it made me immediately want to open the pages and find out what was behind that cover! The content page was well laid out and thoughtfully categorised, enabling you to find out from the start which were the best toys to make for babies through to adults. When making toys, especially for children, it is really useful to know what age group they are suitable for and more importantly how they are constructed, for safety reasons. This book helps with all those answers. Throughout the book there are some lovely pictures. They are clear, colourful and playful. On the slightly negative side I wasn’t so keen on there being no templates included in the book, with only diagrams to photocopy, which have to be enlarged and a seam allowance has to be added. This seems to me to make it unnecessarily complicated. They suggest these patterns then have to be transferred onto the material using carbon paper. I personally would rather make a template and then either draw around it with a heat erasable pen or pin it to the fabric and cut out as a possibly simpler method. On the instruction side I also find it easier seeing ‘how to’ photographs rather than just a diagram, but that’s just a personal preference. The actual toys in the book are beautiful but I wouldn’t suggest the book for complete beginners. Although each toy has been designated a level of competence for each pattern, which is a useful guide in choosing which pattern to work on, there are only five level ones (presumably for beginners) out of twenty five patterns, so it does appear geared to a more competent toy sewer. But having said that, I do like the hints and tips they add in the book, which are very handy for those trying toy making for the first time. I particularly liked the ‘Madame Unicorn’ and ‘Miss Cat’ and will certainly be giving those a try. At just under £13 this is well priced and if you are a toy maker a ‘must have’ in your collection of sewing books -- Sandi * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *Sew Cute Toys - Karine Thiboult Published by Search Press, October 2023 A lovely presented book on a nice quality paper with clear easy read guidance, bullet pointed for quick makes. Cute little thimble to show the experience level on each page and the size of the item. A nice large colour photograph of each toy followed by very clear sketches for make guidance. The book is suitable for any level and covers various techniques with guidance included and using minimal equipment. Easy copy patterns with few pieces. The first few pages has some useful tips for the knitting and embroidery skills required and good explanations on references in the book. A selection of 24 gifts to make are included from practical comfort toys and character dolls for young children to adults. They are all simple in design but look fun to make. Some cute little gifts, I think the Baby bear will be my first. -- Sandra * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *This book has a lovely colourful cover illustration showing some of the soft toys that can be sewn from the patterns. There are 24 different things to make for all ages from young children to adults. Karine Thiboult the author provides some tips for making the toys at the beginning which is important to note and includes some instructions for the embroidery stitches and materials needed. The illustrations throughout the book are clear and colourful of the finished toys but the instructions for making the items are quite brief and not illustrated which makes them hard to follow for beginners. The templates almost all need to be considerably enlarged to be used and most people don’t have access to a copier or printer at home to be able to do this so I would say that is a negative point for me and I would have liked to see fold out full size templates in the back of the book. This alone will mean I will probably not make any of the toys. The design of the toys however is different to any shop bought designs and not the typical soft toy characters so if you want to make something unique or different for your child then this is the book for that. I personally don’t think the toys are stereotypically ‘cute’ as the title suggests but more unusual. Overall I would say this book is for a more experienced sewer who wants to create something different. -- Jax * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *A well laid out book and instructions with a fun variety of characters to make. It struck me that several of the patterns would work just as well as Christmas tree decorations if used without increasing sizes in printing. I'm making up fox at the moment but intend to make at least one of each pattern to send out to Ukraine in march on a donation convoy. -- Mrs. L. Book SynopsisRich in texture and vibrant in colour, Emily Botelho's stunning abstract embroideries are works of art in thread and have earned her a worldwide following. In this, her first book, she showcases 12 beautiful projects inspired by three distinct environments: coastal, mountain and urban. She leads the reader through her unique creative process, from finding inspiration and creating bespoke fabric backgrounds to embellishing each embroidery with a diverse range of stitches, beads and found items that capture a moment in time. Her use of intuitive, slow stitching and a vibrant palette, taken from sources as diverse as mossy rocks or peeling paint, make each of her pieces completely unique. Filled with sumptuous photographs, creative insights and helpful advice, along with an additional gallery section, this book will inspire creative embroiderers of all abilities. Emily (@salt_stitches) is a firm believer that you don't need to go far to be inspired and she encourages you to engage in close observation of the natural world on your doorstep, whether you have stitched before or not. Due to the abstract nature of the craft, there are no patterns to follow or step-by-step instructions. You decide when a piece is finished, which gives you complete freedom to explore the textures that you're working with. Every single piece will be unique, and that's the beauty of it! A range of Emily's downloadable textures available on Bookmarked Hub: www.bookmarkedhub.comTrade ReviewWorld-renowned Emily Botelho is a master embroiderer. This is her first book and showcases 12 projects inspired by three distinct environments: coastal, mountain and urban. She deftly leads you through her complete creative process, and shows you how to find inspiration from the environment, how to create bespoke backgrounds and how to embellish each embroidery with a range of stitches, beads and found items. Emily uses intuitive, slow stitching and a vibrant colour palette, taking from her surroundings with sources as diverse as mossy rocks or peeling paint -- meaning her results are always unique. Here she shows how to do the same with photographs, creative insights and helpful advice to guide you, along with with an additional gallery section. This book will definitely inspire creative embroiderers of all abilities. -- Stitch Magazine * Issue 46 *A beautiful introduction to this beautiful art of creating embroidery embellished with a diverse array of stitches, beads and found items that capture a moment in time. There are no strict rules making it an inexpensive art, and as demonstrated by the 12 projects featured, it can be a meditative and mindful activity that is just beautiful. A vibrant and stunning book with advice for beginners and experienced stitchers alike. -- Jackie Butler * The Bookseller's Circle *This study in abstract embroidery was a joy! A key aspect of the book is the variety available to the reader – the project sections with a range of colour combinations, hoop sizes, stitch types and textures means a new or intermediary stitcher can find something that appeals to them to explore, with the former helpfully equipped with all the techniques needed. And this book certainly inspires explorations! I believe abstract is something exciting for any artist to delve into: the freeness and loose direction allows creativity and the ability to experiment and run wild, and I think Emily demonstrates this exquisitely throughout her art – from the mixed media of the coastal shell pieces to the most abstract and expressive section, her urban series. This was the section that drew me in more than anything. While many of us artists already lean towards admiring, recreating and/or interpreting coastal and mountainous terrains, these being two very well-explored themes in embroidery already, turning something many people would pass in the street without thought or care into something just as gorgeous merits admiration! The chipped paint layers, mis-matched stone wall or old sink, all proving as worthy of these abstract studies and reconstructing through an artistic lens as shell-adorned beaches. Emily’s ability to view these mundane everyday objects as opportunities for beauty and how this can inspire those reading to also see more beauty in their everyday lives shows her to be a leader in her field, and this book a great outlet to let readers explore the abstract beauty around them. -- Victoria Rose Richards, Embroidery Artist * @victoriaroserichards *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Tools and materials 8 How I work 14 Photography: hints and tips 16 Composition and design 20 Techniques 22 PROJECTS 30 Coastal 32 Coastal 1 34 Coastal 2 42 Coastal 3 50 Coastal 4 58 Alpine 66 Alpine 1 68 Alpine 2 76 Alpine 3 82 Alpine 4 88 Urban 94 Urban 1 96 Urban 2 104 Urban 3 110 Urban 4 118 Gallery 126

Well, this exciting new release is the answer to your crafty dilemma. You can transform your pre-loved clothes into 30 stylish projects for babies and toddlers. Garments include a stripy romper, trousers and a frilly dress. There is even a guide on how to easily adapt the clothes to your child's measurements. * Sew Magazine, February 2023 *I'm keen to re-use and recycle, especially for clothing so this book instantly appealed to me. It has some lovely ideas and is suited to both the new and more experienced sewists – using machine or hand stitching. There is a nice mix of clothing and accessories too, particularly liked the sleepsuit from an adult's t-shirt. Also has ideas for printing onto the fabric, so it's more than just take a t-shirt and make an item kind of thing. There are also patterns you can trace-off and guides for making from 0-2yrs old sizing. Pleased with the book and will definitely be trying out some of the ideas. * Customer Review *This imaginative English-language debut by Swedish architect Larsson shows how to transform used clothes into garments for babies and toddlers. The creative projects include turning an adult button-down shirt into a frilled romper, jeans into overalls, a T-shirt into a sleepsuit, and a wool sweater into socks. The measurements are for infants who are 0–6 months old, but the author describes how to adjust the designs for babies who are 6–12 months or 1–2 years old. Other projects show how to make accessories and décor: old bed sheets can be modified into quilts, and T-shirts make a fine material for bibs. To customize these projects, Larsson encourages readers to dabble in such simple fabric printing techniques as dipping the end of a carrot in fabric ink to make dots and carving a stamp from the inside surface of a halved potato. Straightforward instructions aimed at novice sewists ensure that even readers uneasy with a sewing machine will be able to follow along, and the clever designs charm. This adorable collection is ideal for sewing enthusiasts and environmentalists alike. * Publisher's Weekly, February 2023 *In Restyle & Restitch for Little Ones, you’ll find 30 sewing projects for creating stylish baby clothes, from newborns to two-year-olds, including trousers, dresses, sweaters, mittens, rompers and socks. Filled with all manner of information from sewing basics, colours, laundry tips and reference guide to name just a few. -- Helen Finch * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *I love the idea of Debbie Shore’s Sewing Journal. As sewists we all have fabric and patten stashes, so to keep a record is not only practical but also a great aide memoire. I love the fact that Debbie has included some useful information such as how to take body measurements (and of course a place to record them), colour choices, fabrics, tools you need and more. I can see this becoming a well-thumbed, much-loved record of all my dressmaking and craft projects, with slips of paper and sketches added, making a delicious historical journal to muse over in future years. I love it! Now I need to get some more copies for my sisters, nieces and sewing friends! -- Wendy Gardiner * Author, TV Presenter, Sewing Teacher *This is a journal aimed at anyone who stitches so that you can keep track of your sewing throughout the year from goals and intentions through to achievements and progressions. I absolutely adore that, very early on in the journal, Debbie creates space for you to record the things that make you happy as well as space for you to stick photos or swatches in of these things. This is a really beautiful book and it bridges a gap between sewing and journalling so it is a very welcome addition! -- Naomi Clarke * naomialice.co.uk *Debbie's Sewing journal contains many different sections to help plan and design all your sewing projects. It has special sections for fabric swatches and planners. There are also sections for learning how to measure yourself and then you can keep note of any important notes and measurements for your projects. I believe this book will be very useful for people as they can keep note if they have many projects on the go at once. It's also handy if you want to refer back to projects that you have made before. The book is a handy size to take with you to sewing classes and would fit in your hand bag. I like the design of the book that have been taken from Debbie's own fabric designs. This book is hard back and has an elastic strap to close. This is handy because as you add fabric swatches and notes to the book it may become bigger and open by itself so the elastic strap will keep everything together and safe from falling out. It also has a ribbon bookmark so you can save a page easily. This book has exceeded my expectations and has many sections that I will find handy for my project plans. Especially for when I'm planning projects for selling for my business. This book is priced fairly and is great value for a hard back book. This book has many pros and has contents for all types of sewing planning such as measurements, fabrics, tools, monthly/project planners, quilting, dressmaking, homewares etc. I believe this book could be improved with a pocket at the back for any loose notes. Overall I cannot wait to use this book and is another amazing book by Debbie. And this is different to her usual project books. This is personal to yourself. Thank you Debbie. -- Megan * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *I do love the Sewing Journal from Debbie Shore. Its hardback cover and colour scheme makes it look and feel like a quality product. The internal pages are good quality for writing on, and you are encouraged to write in this journal to make it your own. I think the content is very encouraging whether you're new to sewing or experienced. I wasn’t sure a sewing journal was necessary as I do have a notebook to “jot" bits into but this Journal will definitely “organise" my jottings, as I am constantly creating headings and trying to leave space for future notes, however Debbie has done all of this for me and I can just open up the Journal and start writing. Although filled with hints and tips the journal is not a "how to” guide book for instance it doesn’t explain different sewing seams such as a French seam or a Flat Felled seam, but you could certainly jot down reminders on Project Pages to look up how to do certain techniques if your pattern/project calls for it. And there are a lot of pages for Project Notes - 90+. There’s also space for notes on sewing tools, for instance I have to change the tension when using different threads on my sewing machine and so will definitely use this area of the Journal, and there’s a colour wheel and advice to help with matching fabrics. Debbie provides 'Introduction' and 'How To Use This Journal' pages to help the user get the most from the Journal, she also has little notes about herself and you’re treated to some of her witty Ditties. At first I thought the book should be spiral bound but the quality of the bookbinding is so good the Journal can easily be opened out for writing in/lying flat without worrying about the book falling apart. The only improvements I think would be a second elastic page saver on the front of the Journal just to keep the pages flat on both sides whilst working from it, especially as the Journal has space for attaching fabric swatches, and also a plastic pocket on the inside back cover for saving other bits of info from a fabulous sewing journey. -- Juliet * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *The sewing journal by Debbie Shore is a must have for every level of sewer. The hardback is robust and has an elastic stay and ribbon bookmark. Excellent quality paper and lovely colours and style. It begins all about you, your ideas and inspirations and shows you how to correctly measure yourself. The sewing essentials section is full of information on different fabrics and what they are best used for what colours go together plus details all the tools you need in your sewing kit to be successful. You can even put in swatches and details of your fabrics in your stash (because we all have one from the moment we begin). The projects section is perfect for planning each project and detailing everything you need including machine settings, needle types, thread, materials and notions. With a review section to document what went well and what you would change to improve your project. Finally the sewing reference section tells you everything you need to know from basic sewing terminology, repairs and tips on dressmaking quilting and home furnishings. Between each section Debbie has added a brilliant verse which we can all relate to and makes you smile. This book really is like having all of Debbie’s expertise at your side as well as giving you somewhere to organise your sewing projects. Having started out sewing with Debbie’s tutorials and books on home furnishings gifts and bags and through her half yard club I now want to improve my dressmaking and I can’t wait to use the journal it to plan and record my progress. -- Jackie * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *Debbie Shore's Sewing Journal Initially I wondered if this journal would be relevant to me considering the amount of sewing I do and the years of experience I have under my belt. But, my doubts were short lived, as I feel this journal is a fabulous edition to anyone’s sewing room regardless of experience or the projects you are used to sewing, there is something here for everyone. . This journal is a very different publication from Debbie’s usual pattern books and is a very welcome addition to her library. What I like when opening this is journal is the obvious capacity to customise it and to make it your own and having a useful handy elastic strap to secure any loose samples you may wish to add to the journal. It will become an invaluable tool to any projects that I will be making in the future, and with the added feature of it being a hardback, this makes it far more robust and durable compared to others in the market. The book itself has been well thought out regarding its layout, from how to recognise different fabrics, what to best use them with and what needle is required for the specific job in hand. Even finding how to measure and record your own body size. There are plenty of project pages in the journal and my only minor criticism of this, would be that, if there was a ring binder then you could easily add more pages, if required, on both the project and sample material pages. I love how Debbie has brought to the journal some light hearted poems and some of her own experiences with needle craft, with some lovely humorous snippets. One of the sections I particularly liked, were the pages to put your own swatches in and the cost, and where you purchased them from. As if your anything like me, I can never remember either and this makes it easier to repeat the project at a later stage. Being able to put all the details down for different projects enables me to refer back to these easily, and as I make a lot of different items for customers it is an invaluable reference source to search for a particular customer and what they had previously ordered. The section on the sewing machines is another useful reference. The only thing I would add would be a date for servicing and maintenance. This journal will make an ideal present for any friend or relative that sews or even a gift to yourself. There is so much inspiration in it for ‘newbie’ sewers and even for experienced sewers who may have lost their ‘mojo’. Thank you Debbie for understanding what us ‘sewers’ really need. -- Sandi * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *Wow! The only all round sewing journal you will ever need (until you run out and need another one). Two fabulous books in one, a comprehensive journal and a fabulous sewing reference book make this excellent value for money. I couldn't think of anything else that could be added. A lovely outer cover design and colour and the elastic strap is very useful as a potential bookmark. The print, diagrams and photos are clear and concise and delightfully thought out with so many extras. I can't wait to get using this and it would make a fabulous gift. -- Sue * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *With sew many projects on the go what a great idea to have a journal to document your makes. A nice A5 size hardback journal secured by a piece of elastic to keep your swatches secure and a ribbon to mark your page. The cover is a pretty, themed stylish addition to your sewing kit. This is a handy journal and reference book in one neat size, with some of Debbie's ditties included. As an experienced sewer Debbie has thought of everything you would need to record about your projects and some. From needles, machine settings, threads and notes etc, the only little bit I probably would never get round to doing is adding a photo. A whole section on really useful tips covering everything from quilt sizes and how to take measurements There is a comprehensive section on colour, needle sizes, stitches, fabric, interfacings, machine maintenance etc and just about anything you can think of that is useful to have a quick clear reference to, printed clearly on quality paper. A great size journal to have with you when shopping to remind yourself you really do not need anymore fabric, but you can add the new purchase in anyway This would make a lovely quality gift for any sewer at any level including those who have everything already. A good price and I highly recommend. -- Sandra * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *When I opened my journal I was amazed by how much is packed into this. You have sections you can write your info in & sections where Debbie has given you loads of essential information. Debbie being the amazing teacher that she is has so much sections giving you tips. Like Using zips, Fabrics, Needles even a colour chart. You can store you info in the sections provided & I would recommend writing some of the sections in either pencil or the erasable pens so you can amend them as needed like the measurement charts or for the section where you put dates in when you write in the dates you serviced your machine. Even though she has provided numerous sections to write in. I don't want to give too much away or it will spoil some of the surprises that's in store when you purchase this. This would make a lovely gift for someone that loves sewing. I only wished they had it in a choice of colours like lilac & pink as well. But it's so useful & I love it. -- Pauline * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *I used to write up all my makes in a notebook, but this is a step so much further than that! There are a number of different sections, but each one has hints and tips. There is so much to learn from this journal, including your own notes from the projects you have worked on, materials used, measurements etc. I love the addition of Debbie's little ditties, scattered through the journal, they are quirky and fun. There are pages describing different fabrics, recommendations for how to use it and needle suggestions, very handy. I have actually read the journal through, like a book, before starting to write my projects, favourite fabrics and colours into the easy to find sections. The design and colouring of the journal is very classy, something I can carry around in my project bags as I use it for knitting as well as sewing. -- Tracey * Half Yard Sewing Club Member *The book is a great combination of tips and dedicated sections to help you organise your fabric stash, track your projects, and make notes on what techniques you want to try and things you’ve learned along the way. I’m always scribbling notes on various bits of paper about what I plan to make, project ideas, measurements and so on, so this book is exactly what I need to organise everything in one place. There’s a huge section devoted to project planning, where you can document each project with fabric swatches notes on needles, threads and other haberdashery, and a space for reflection and evaluation of what worked or tips for future projects. There’s also a monthly planner so you can think ahead to work out what projects to make and when, and make a note of key dates, such as birthdays or special occasions that you’re making something for. The book comes with a ribbon bookmark and elastic fastening band so you can keep your place easily, and if you choose to add in fabric swatches or other additional bits and pieces, the elastic band will keep everything together and enclosed. I think the book could be improved by being spiral bound, as once I begin to include swatches of fabrics, I’ll need a bit more space between the pages. This would make a great gift for any sewing friend. -- Julia Hincks * houseofmisssew.com *Table of ContentsStarting out 4 Introduction 4 How to use your journal 5 Setting your intentions 8 About me 10 Sewing essentials 16 All about fabrics 16 Your tool kit 38 Colour 50 Project planning 56 Project planners 60 Monthly planners 140 Sewing reference 154 Mending 155 Quilting 161 Dressmaking 166 Homewares 174 Sewing glossary 178 Final thoughts 180 Notes to my future self 181 Things I've accomplished 182

Book SynopsisLearn to sew 26 fresh, contemporary designs, all using just half a yard of fabric. Debbie Shore has a passion for sewing, and her fresh, contemporary designs coupled with simple, easy-to-follow instructions make this book a recipe for success. All of the projects use just half a yard of fabric, making them ideal for using up scraps and oddments left over from other projects or sold off cheaply by your favourite fabric store. All you need is a sewing machine and a basic sewing kit, and in no time at all you'll be making one of the gorgeous projects in the book. There are 26 to choose from, including beautiful bags, aprons, a craft caddy for storing your making kit, padded coat hangers, a chicken doorstop, a handy wash bag, a notice board and numerous other gifts and accessories for you, your family and your home. The basic techniques you need to know are explained clearly at the beginning of the book, and every step-by-step project is accompanied by a fabulous photograph of the finished piece, which will not fail to delight and inspire you.Trade ReviewIf you sew, you probably have a scrap bin full of odd-sized pieces of fabric that you don’t know what to do with. Avid sewist Shore provides 26 small projects designed to use these small-to-medium scraps. Despite the book’s title, a half yard isn’t needed for most of the projects, which focus on cute, feminine accessories for women and girls. Highlights include the craft caddy, with numerous pockets to hold various bits and bobs of crafty stuff (and a convenient handle for portablility), a zippered makeup bag, and an easily customizable pair of house slippers with soft fleece soles. The projects are easy to sew and require basic sewing machine skills (straight and zigzag stitch, topstitching, and zipper installation), and key steps are illustrated with photographs. VERDICT This pretty collection will appeal to sewists looking for simple, quick projects to make as gifts. * Fibre Crafts *We all have scraps of fabric that we never end up using, so this bestselling book by Debbie Shore for 26 projects to make with less than half a yard of fabric is ideal. There are lots of different ideas in here, some you will have undoubtedly seen before, but lots of other new ones too. They range from tissue box covers, to slippers, glasses cases and placemats. The images, as you would expect, are very clear and bright and the instructions are perfect for sewers of all abilities. Some of my favourite inclusions are for a sewing machine cover, neck cushions (which annoyingly I'd just bought for my girls but will be using the pattern from this once they split) and a gorgeous chicken doorstop - who could resist?! I think that there are lots of useful projects to get your teeth into, and to use up those scraps of left-over fabric! * craftingnotcleaning.blogspot.co.uk *Simple, quick and easy – these projects can be made in a jiffy using small amounts of fabric. Easy to understand instructions and clear photographs show these projects off to advantage. There’s something for everyone and this is a great beginners book. Good range of simple to sew projects for the home and family. Nothing new but a good collection of standby items from aprons and oven gloves to owls and hens, tissue box and sewing machine covers. 26 beautiful projects to make or give as gifts and the book would make a beautiful gift too. * Karen Platt Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts *As someone who tends to buy fabric in small lengths (fat quarters or half metres) I was very excited when I saw this book was coming out. I’m always on the lookout for projects to make with small amounts of fabric and this book has 26 different projects in it which use either fat quarters or half metres. The projects are a mix between things for your home like a tea cosy, pan holder and peg bag, things to wear such as slippers, children’s apron and rosette head band to useful things like a craft caddy, glasses case, tote bag and table mat. There are big bright photos for every stage of the sewing process, making it easy to follow. There are also step by step written instructions plus useful tips scattered throughout the book. What’s clever is there are no templates in the book, instead Debbie tells you how to create the templates yourself using common household objects like plates or lids. This means no faffing around with photocopiers trying to enlarge templates (yay!). This book is ideal if you have lots of smaller pieces of fabric you want to use up. * Sewing Directory, The *I don't know about you, but I have a lot of rather beautiful half yard and fat quarter pieces of fabrics in my stash, so it's always useful to find a title that focuses on these. This is really a book aimed at beginners or novices, so whilst the projects are very sweet and creative, it may not be challenging enough for some of our more advanced readers. It is however a lovely book of ideas to introduce youngsters to sewing, and it includes a detailed preparation section before it embarks on the 26 projects within. The projects are mainly generally sewing based but some do incorporate basic patchwork, applique and quilting. Large step-by-step instruction photos make it very easy to follow and increase the production values of the book. Favourite projects for me include the chicken doorstop, the oven gloves and the sewing machine dust cover. * Popular Patchwork *This is a delightful book. The basic techniques you need to know are explained at the beginning of the book, and every step-by-step project is accompanied by a fabulous photograph of the finished piece, including beautiful bags, aprons, a craft caddy for storing your making kit, a handy wash bag, a notice board and numerous other gifts and accessories for you, your family and your home. * Hot Brands, Cool Places *Many, many months ago I was sent three books of my choice to review from Search Press, and I have finally gotten around to posting a review of the first book: ‘Half Yard Heaven’ by Debbie Shore, which I am told has been one of Search Press’s best sellers of 2014.As its title suggests, the principle of the book is putting to good use leftover scraps of fabric, or, as the author points out, ‘the fabric could equally as well come from an old tshirt, duvet cover or tablecloth as from a fabric store’. Using up left-over pieces of fabric is a very appealing prospect, as I’m sure it would be to lots of you who also sew and often find yourselves with the odd half metre left over – too pretty to throw away, but too small to use. The visual style of the book is very Cath Kidston inspired – florals, polka dots and stripes abound in pretty pastel colours. The photography is good. Step by step instructions are accompanied by clear photographs, and the layout is well designed and not too fussy or overcrowded. The projects vary in appeal, at least to me! I really liked the Sewing Machine Dust Cover, so I made it, and found it was easy to make, with good, clear, customisable instructions. There are other projects that I could see myself making as gifts for other people. The projects that stand out to me are the slippers, the child’s apron, the owl and the pussycat stuffed toys, the chicken doorstop and the padded coat hanger. Book SynopsisDid you think embroidery was complicated, confined to flowers and a major undertaking? This cute, crazy and clever little book will dispel those myths and inspire you to take up a needle and thread even if it's for the first time ever. Fiona Goble is well qualified to write this book as she set herself the task of producing a little embroidery for every day of the year for her blog stitchaday. The book is divided into activities: eating, sleeping, working, relaxing, playing, dressing, bathing and celebrating and there are four or five items and motifs within each section. The embroideries are shown on items made from plain cotton (calico type), felt and wool (think old cream blanket type of wool). While all the motifs are shown on pale or very pale pastel backgrounds, colour is introduced in the form of colourful fabric borders, trimmings, etc. For each motif, there is also a 'Would also work well on...' heading with suggestions for further uses of the little embroidered designs. Some of the items are purchased (eg, clothing, pillowcase), some are either really simple to make (eg, bookcover, greeting card) or pretty simple to make (eg, bags, pencil case) where instructions but not patterns for how to make them are given in a sentence or two. Some of the motifs and items are unadorned and some have added details such as extra stitching, buttons, beads and trimmings. It is suitable for anyone new to stitching; young embroiderers; and, anyone looking to bring a light-hearted touch to their home or wardrobe.

Book Synopsis Before appearing on the BBC's The Great British Sewing Bee, Chinelo Bally had never used a sewing pattern. She wowed the judges with her ability to create stylish, fitted garments using a freehand cutting method that was taught to her by an aunt. In Freehand Fashion, Chinelo lets us in to the secret of how she does it. Using a series of basic garment blocks, Chinelo explains how this innovative technique can be used to create a whole wardrobe of fashionable clothes that will fit every shape and size – with no patterns required. Based on a traditional Nigerian technique, Chinelo has developed her own freehand cutting method. The emphasis is on the individual’s own body measurements, and getting the perfect fit. This is a surprisingly simple technique that anyone can learn. No fancy equipment is needed – just a sewing machine, measuring tape, chalk and of course a good pair of scissors. Using step-by-step illustrations, the book shows how to draft, cut and construct the five basic blocks that are used – either singly or in combination – to make every item of clothing in the wardrobe.
