  • Brill Paul's Cross and the Culture of Persuasion in England, 1520-1640

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe open-air pulpit within the precincts of St. Paul’s Cathedral known as ‘Paul’s Cross’ can be reckoned among the most influential of all public venues in early-modern England. Between 1520 and the early 1640s, this pulpit and its auditory constituted a microcosm of the realm and functioned at the epicentre of events which radically transformed England’s political and religious identities. Through cultivation of a sophisticated culture of persuasion, sermons at Paul’s Cross contributed substantially to the emergence of an early-modern public sphere. This collection of 24 essays seeks to situate the institution of this most public of pulpits and to reconstruct a detailed history of some of the more influential sermons preached at Paul’s Cross during this formative period. Contributors include: Thomas Dabbs, Ellie Gebarowski-Shafer, Cecilia Hatt, Roze Hentschell, Anne James, Gerard Kilroy, John N. King, Torrance Kirby, Bradford Littlejohn, Steven May, Natalie Mears, Mary Morrissey, David Neelands, Kathleen O'Leary, Mark Rankin, Angela Ranson, Richard Rex, John Schofield, Jeanne Shami, P.G. Stanwood, Susan Wabuda, John Wall, Ralph Werrell, and Jason Zuidema.Trade Review“the articles in this collection represent the best of recent scholarship on early modern sermons. They speak with many voices, but eloquently remind us of the sermon’s power to persuade.” Seth Anderson, Claremont Graduate University. • Brill Preaching after Easter: Mid-Pentecost, Ascension, and Pentecost in Late Antiquity

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe studies collected in Preaching after Easter examine the festal history and homiletics of Mid-Pentecost, Ascension, and Pentecost in the late antique Mediterranean world. Articles on individual sermons or the work of individual preachers such as John Chrysostom, Augustine of Hippo, Peter Chrysologus, Leo the Great, and Severus of Antioch exhibit the richness of late antique festal preaching. Questions of authenticity, heresiology, and theological, exegetical, or liturgical history are addressed with methodological rigor. Complementary contributions that deal with ancient Jewish-Christian dialogue, art-historical reception, and contemporary liturgical theology illustrate the wide ramifications of ancient Christian festal practice. Students and scholars of these feasts and the interpretive traditions devoted to them will find this volume to be an indispensable source of information and analysis.Table of ContentsContents Introduction Preaching after Easter: Fresh Perspectives on an Understudied Topic Richard W. • The Power of Love: The Royal Wedding Sermon

John Murray Press The Power of Love: The Royal Wedding Sermon

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisThe text of the celebrated 2018 royal wedding sermon, plus four other sermons touching on themes of love, commitment, and social justice, by Bishop Michael CurryTwo billion people watched Bishop Michael Curry deliver his sermon on the redemptive power of love at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle (now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex) at Windsor Castle in May 2018. Here, he shares the full text of that sermon, plus an introduction describing the context, along with four of his favourite sermons on the themes of love and social justice. The world met Bishop Curry at the wedding and was moved by his riveting, hopeful, and deceptively simple message: love and acceptance are what we need in these strange times.Trade ReviewBeneath Bishop Curry's plain words is a profound theology and a dear mystical insight of how union with Christ must lead to social action... This book would make a great present. * Church Times *Outside London's Southwark Cathedral people are queuing for the chance to see him speak in the flesh as he launches The Power of Love, a new book that includes both Harry and Meghan's wedding sermon, and some of his other finest moments in the pulpit. Inside, he is every bit as genial and compelling in person as he appeared that sunny day in May. * The Telegraph *At St George's Chapel, Windsor, on May 19, the co-celebrant gave what has been widely acknowledged as a tour de force...He develops this theme in The Power of Love, an anthology of his recent sermons, which was launched at Southwark Cathedral in London this week. * The Times *He's the guy who preached at Harry and Megan's wedding with that awesome sermon...Normally after a wedding we're normally talking about flowers and frocks and all that, but everyone was talking about that sermon and the power of his words. * BBC Radio 2 - Kate Bottley *His sermon is being published as part of a collection called The Power of Love. * BBC Radio 4 - Sunday *The core theme of all the sermons is this transfiguring power of love. Bishop Curry has a moving use of language by which he picks up phrases from scripture, spirituals, or hymns. By his repetition of these phrases through asermon, they become like waves crashing on rocks. Beneath Bishop Curry's plain words is a profound theology and a dear mystical insight of how union with Christ must lead to social action. * The Church Times *

Book SynopsisThese remarkable sermons by John Henry Newman (1801-1890) were first published at Oxford in 1843, two years before he was received into the Roman Catholic Church. Published here in its entirety is the third edition of 1872 for which Newman added an additional sermon, bracketed notes, and, importantly, a comprehensive, condensed Preface. In her introduction, noted Newman scholar Mary Katherine Tillman considers the volume as an integral whole, showing how all of the sermons systematically relate to the central theme of the faith-reason relationship.Trade Review“Because faith restores all things natural, it gives the intellectual back his intellect. One might almost characterize the Fifteen Sermons as lessons in how to think—but that is not their only reason. As they lead the reader through the intricate relations of faith and reason, they may also prompt the educated man to pay a little more attention to his nightly prayers.” —New Oxford Review
