Book SynopsisThe authors included in this volume—Ilarion, Klim Smoljatic, and Kirill of Turov—are remarkable for both their personal and literary achievements. Appointed in 1051 by Prince Jaroslav the Wise, Ilarion was the first of only two recorded “native” metropolitans of Kiev. His “Sermon on Law and Grace” constitutes the finest piece of eleventh-century Rus’ rhetorical literature. Klim Smoljatic, the second “native” metropolitan of Rus’ (from 1147), is the author of the controversial “Epistle to Foma,” which addresses the debate over the proper nature and limits of Christian learning. Finally, the twelfth-century monk Kirill of Turov is best known for his collection of allegorical lessons and some of the most accomplished sermons of Kievan Rus’. The volume contains the first complete translations of the “Epistle to Foma” and the lessons and sermons of Kirill, as well as an entirely new rendering of the “Sermon on Law and Grace.”Simon Franklin prefaces the texts with a substantial introduction that places each of the three authors in their historical context and examines the literary qualities as well as textual complexities of these outstanding works of Rus’ literature.Table of ContentsAbbreviations Introduction 1. Book SynopsisA Year of Grace Vol. 2 is a collection of Bo Giertz's sermons from the second half of the liturgical calendar following the day of Pentecost. He preached the earlier sermons in his ten years as a parish pastor at Torpa, a small rural town in Sweden where he began his pastoral career and wrote such books as The Hammer of God and With My Own Eyes. These early sermons are strongly influenced by the ordo salutis (order of salvation) that he took over from Henric Schartau, yet always with an emphasis on salvation by grace rather than the order. His later sermons were preached as the Bishop of Gothenburg throughout his diocese and as a guest preacher elsewhere. These retain the influence of Henric Schartau in that they seek to directly address the "three hearers"--unbelievers, those awakened to the law, and mature Christians--yet his style takes on more subtlety in when, where and how these hearers are addressed in the context of the sermon. The result is a collection of sermons that provide both great weekly devotions (as the collection was intended) and a program of study for pastors and others wanting to learn how to "rightly handle the word of truth." (2 Tim. 2:15)

  • Vernacular Theology: Dominican Sermons and Audience in Late Medieval Italy

De Gruyter Vernacular Theology: Dominican Sermons and Audience in Late Medieval Italy

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines the audiences and languages of Dominican sermons in late medieval Italy. It is a thorough analysis of how Latinate theological culture interacted with popular religious devotion. In particular it assesses the role of vernacular theology. Eliana Corbari defines vernacular theology as a form of theology that is based neither on a Latin scholastic model nor a monastic one. It is a “third dimension” of theology which was accessible to the laity, and in particular women, through their attendance at sermons and the reading of vernacular devotional works (in this case, medieval Italian treatises and sermons). Through painstaking manuscript work, Corbari makes an excellent contribution to sermon studies, gender studies, medieval theology, and codicology. She demonstrates that Dominican friars preached to an active contingent of laywomen, usually members of confraternities, who not only attended these sermons but re-read them and also disseminated them through book production to the wider Florentine community.

Book SynopsisIs fellowship still possible? In this volume Jochen Kaiser analyses how we experience music during church services. In his view singing and making music may best be seen as both the individual and collective expression of the faith of those assembled.Music during church services can be a convincing expression of the faith of the individual, both of heart and soul. All persons present become part of a temporary, spiritual collective. The resultant meaning of church music for the religious experience of the individual forms the empirical part of this work by Jochen Kaiser. He sent out an appeal to collect essays and musical examples taken from actual experiences, 64 of which he analysed using the so-called documentary method. The results show that singing and making music during church services can be interpreted as both an individual and collective expression of the faith of those present.

Book SynopsisToday there are many people among the nations of the world who are drawn to the Jewish people and desire the sweetness of the Torah and its teachings. It has been difficult for non-Jewish people to find such teachings -- until now. This groundbreaking book is a collection of essays on the weekly Torah portions and the holidays from twelve leading rabbis of Israel, written specifically to address the interests of a Christian audience. This is the worlds first book of Torah written by Orthodox rabbis especially (but not exclusively) with pro-Israel Christians in mind! These Orthodox rabbis are enabling the fulfillment of the words of Zechariah 8:23: In those days it will happen that ten men, of all the [different] languages of the nations, will take hold, they will take hold of the corner of the garment of a Jewish man, saying, Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you! Rabbis participating in this volume: Rabbi David Aaron, Rabbi Nathan Lopes, Cardozo, Rabbi Levi Cooper, Rabbi Yehoshua Friedman, Rabbi Moshe Goldsmith, Rabbi Moshe Lichtman, Rabbi Gedalia Meyer, Rabbi Chanan Morrison, Rabbi Zelig Pliskin, Rabbi Chaim Richman, Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, Rabbi Tuly Weisz.
