University Press of Colorado Writing on the Wall: Writing Education and
Book SynopsisThe first concerted effort of writing studies scholars to interrogate isolationism in the United States, Writing on the Wall reveals how writing teachers?often working directly with students who are immigrants, undocumented, first-generation, international, and students of color?embody ideas that counter isolationism. The collection extends existing scholarship and research about the ways racist and colonial rhetorics impact writing education; the impact of translingual, transnational, and cosmopolitan ideologies on student learning and student writing; and the role international educational partnerships play in pushing back against isolationist ideologies. Established and early-career scholars who work in a broad range of institutional contexts highlight the historical connections among monolingualism, racism, and white nationalism and introduce community- and classroom-based practices that writing teachers use to resist isolationist beliefs and tendencies. ?Writing on the wall? serves as a metaphor for the creative, direct action writing education can provide and invokes border spaces as sites of identity expression, belonging, and resistance. The book connects transnational writing education with the fight for racial justice in the US and around the world and will be of significance to secondary and postsecondary writing teachers and graduate students in English, linguistics, composition, and literacy studies. Verso Books Storytelling: Bewitching the Modern Mind
Book SynopsisPolitics is no longer the art of the possible, but of the fictive. Its aim is not to change the world as it exists, but to affect the way that it is perceived. In Storytelling Christian Salmon looks at the twenty-first century hijacking of creative imagination, anatomizing the timeless human desire for narrative form, and how this desire is abused by the marketing mechanisms that bolster politicians and their products: luxury brands trade on embellished histories, managers tell stories to motivate employees, soldiers in Iraq train on Hollywood-conceived computer games, and spin doctors construct political lives as if they were a folk epic. This "storytelling machine" is masterfully unveiled by Salmon, and is shown to be more effective and insidious as a means of oppression than anything dreamed up by Orwell.Trade ReviewA compelling and very readable polemic. * Financial Times *French writer Salmon here treats us to the useful spectacle of a relentless polemic against a ubiquitous idea widely held to provoke only positive feelings. As used by branders or politicians, 'storytelling' is, on his argument, a sedative, suppressing the desire for truth in favour of satisfying narrative form. -- Steven Poole * Guardian *Fascinating ... intellectually satisfying ... Salmon's insights are thought-provoking and have ramifications beyond the world of advertising. * Washington Post *Salmon draws together his arguments into a coherent and chilling whole. * Independent *Salmon makes a riveting case for how public relations (or more euphemistically, storytelling) has come to dominate statecraft and business in the West. * Publishers Weekly *This book, which is both concise and clearly written . guides us through these texts which are largely unknown and now very influential. * Le Monde *There are certain books that make you feel less stupid after reading them than before . It is a fascinating and never jargon-heavy book. * Le Progrès *

Centre for the Study of Language & Information Dynamics, Polarity and Quantification
Book SynopsisThe topics of the papers in this collection run the gamut from empirical coverage of polarity item systems in a variety of languages to results in metatheoretical reasoning about quantifier reducibility. A recurrent theme throughout is the improvement (or replacement) of notions of quantificational scope in linguistic analysis by formally sophisticated analyses of the properties of quantifiers and their dynamic interpretations. The authors have written to admirable standards of formalisation and clarity of exposition and their results deserve thoughtful consideration and incorporation into linguistic semantics.Trade Review'The papers contained in this book improve or even replace notions of quantificational scope in linguistic research by sophisticated formal analyses of the properties of quantifiers and their dynamic interpretations. The authors have written to admirable standards of formalization and clarity of exposition and their results deserve thoughtful consideration and incorporation into linguistic semantics.' William A. Ladusaw, University of California at Santa Cruz.

Pitchstone Publishing Damn!: A Cultural History of Swearing in Modern America
Book SynopsisSwearing, cussing, or cursing, out of anger, excitement, or just because, is something most of us do, at least to some degree. Turn on the television or open a magazine, and there it is. Damn! is an insightful and entertaining look at our evolving use of profanity over the last half-century or so, from a time when Gone with the Wind came under fire for using the word “damn” to an age where the f-bomb is dropped in all walks of life. Writer and artist Rob Chirico follows the course of swearing through literature, the media, and music, as well as through our daily lives. From back rooms and barracks to bookshelves and Broadway; and from precedents to presidents, the journey includes such diverse notables as George Carlin, the Simpsons, D. H. Lawrence, Ice T, Barack Obama, Nietzsche, and, of course, Lenny Bruce. If you have ever stopped and wondered WTF has happened to our American tongue, don’t get out the bar of soap until you finish Damn!Trade Review"Slang, which usually steers clear of praise, manages 354 synonyms for 'excellent.' Mr. Chirico's book deserves the lot. It is witty, erudite, admirably widely researched, and skewers those who forget that in the phrase 'bad language,' the 'bad' is merely an opinion and it is the 'language,' as valid and fascinating as any other variety of English, that matters. Thus the essence of a study that will appeal both to the general reader and to the expert who will acknowledge it as among the best overviews of its topic: swearing. H. L. Mencken would have enjoyed Damn! So too would Lenny Bruce." Jonathon Green, author, Green's Dictionary of Slang"An informative trip on the topics of profanity, cursing, swearing, obscenity, or whatever else we want to call offensive speech, with connections to media, popular culture, the courts, sports, and social science. Damn! is full of relevant, up-to-date, and comprehensive examples of this vexing aspect of human communication. Chirico's entertaining and often humorous examples bring home the complicated, nuanced, and often misunderstood world of cursing in America past and present." Timothy Jay, PhD, author, Cursing in America and Why We Curse
