    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn 2003 Ben Law captivated the nation by building his woodland house on Channel 4s Grand Designs programme, the home was later voted the most popular Grand Design ever by viewers. The presenter, Kevin McCloud, loved the project so much that he has written the foreword to this book! A Grand Designs Revisited programme was aired on British TV in October 2005. Full of stunning colour photographs, The Woodland House is a visual guide to how Ben built his outstandingly beautiful home in the woods. It is also a practical manual, and the story of a man realising a lifetimes dream to build one of the most sustainable and beautiful homes in Britain. The Woodland House gives details of the evolving design process, the identifying of materials, costings, project management and the actual building. It proves that low cost, low impact and high aesthetics can go hand in hand and that it is possible to build green and affordably. As the pre-eminent UK example of building with wood and renewable materials this will also appeal to the growing number of people with environmental and green interests, as well as to the building communityTrade ReviewThe Woodland House is a gorgeous and glowing testimony to Ben's house. It has enough text to tell you what you need to know, but it lets the colour photos do most of the talking, and the result is a beautifully produced book that you could leave on any coffee table, it would melt the most hostile of hearts. It has an excellent collection of resources and other information, and it does what Permanent Publications books do best, it celebrates its subject, while at the same time passing on the practical tools to allow us to make one ourselves. Permanent Publications Building a Low Impact Roundhouse

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn Building A Low Impact Roundhouse Tony Wrench shares his many years of experience, his skills and techniques, his ups and downs, always in a witty and inspiring manner. The book covers the process of visualising and designing a house through to the practical side of lifting the living roof, infilling the walls, laying out rooms and adding renewable, autonomous technology. Building A Low Impact Roundhouse has become a classic text. Tonys home and lifestyle have attracted the interest of the media and he and his partner continue to inspire many individuals and communities to seek out ways of living more sustainably. Now in its fourth edition, with a fascinating 2014 update. Tony also includes sections on the physical design and writes about the lifestyle required for living in a roundhouse. He offers advice on roofs, floors, walls, compost toilets, wood stoves, kitchens, windows and on planning permission. There are additional photographs of life in and around the dwelling and illustrations from the construction plans for one of the UK's most unique of homes. This true and captivating story covers the realisation of a lifetime s dream as well as being a practical how to manual for anyone who loves the idea of low impact living and wants to self-build an affordable, organic home.Trade ReviewThis book is a description of the fascinating process that would lead through the design of the structure, the detailing, the construction and the fitting out. It is not a technical treatise in any sense, though the basic sketches could be used to build a similar structure. There are many good photos to back up the text, and they give a better sense of scale than the line illustrations. The book is well written with a good deal of wit and logical explanation, by a permie who is obviously in tune with living sustainably and willing to eschew much of the baggage we take for granted, but is still able to live simply and luxuriously. Highly recommended. Micheal Guerra, author of Compact Living

Permanent Publications 7 Ways to Think Differently: Embrace Potential,

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores ways to address personal, social and environmental concerns in simple practical steps in our daily lives. It explains how individuals and communities can work together to achieve positive change. It discusses the current political and mainstream paradigms and where they are leading us. The thoughts and actions of people past and present have determined the current state of our planet. If we change our thinking, we can change the health of our own lives, and also the future state of our world. 7 Ways to Think Differently explores ways to address personal, social and environmental concerns in simple practical steps in our daily lives, helping us to make incremental, achievable changes. As well as addressing our internal landscapes, Looby explains how individuals and communities can work together to achieve positive change. She also explores the current political and mainstream paradigms and where they are leading us.Trade ReviewThroughout this very readable book Looby encourages us to think about thinking ... and in doing so she poses a number of fundamental questions including, for example: How do you see the world?, What might influence how you think about this?, What are your beliefs and assumptions?, What are the patterns of thinking that recreate feelings, behaviours and learning?, How can you go deeper and think more critically to challenge these? and How can you reinterpret these stories? The Introduction covers how she developed the basis for the book and briefly lists the seven different ways (and her choice of symbols to illustrate each one). She provides explanations of Permaculture and The Work That Reconnects, Thinking about Thinking, Shifting our Thinking and concludes with Landscape of Thought which pulls all seven ways together into a single graphic image. The bulk of the book has seven chapters, each covering one of the seven ways, which are: abundance thinking, solutions thinking, systems thinking, thinking like nature, co-operative thinking, thinking for the future and from thinking to doing. Each one adds structure and depth to the unfolding story. The final pages are packed with further resources, listing books, websites and films as well as 46 references used throughout the text. There is also a very useful double page Ways of Thinking Summary with multiple examples and the relevant permaculture principles applying to each one. In her closing words Looby asks us to accept that this [book] is an invitation to embark on a beautiful journey of embracing, responding and discovering. I do, I am now using the book and strongly recommend it to you as one very effective tool for being and doing in a very different way.; Alan Charlton, Permaculture magazine

Book Synopsisideas and inspiration for those looking to reduce their household waste Is recycling really the answer to household waste? How do we eliminate microplastics from our wastewater? How do we avoid consumer goods that are designed to break? How do we stop the oceans being trashed? Towards Zero Waste offers practical tools for change in your own kitchen, on your weekly shop and around your home, as well as in the wider world. Feidhlim Harty explores how and why we need to go zero waste, firstly looking at where waste currently goes, and revealing the hidden world of food and product miles and embodied energy. He shares how to reduce waste room by room, at events, parties, during our travels, and at work. Having minimised waste for over two decades, Feidhlim and his family share their clever ideas to eliminate junk, buy wisely, free yourself from useless packaging, reduce not only your eco footprint but your household bills, compost all biodegradables, and reuse, repair and reroute. They share five simple steps to zero waste and inspire us to be active and push for change. There is a hunger now within society to address the root causes of plastic waste, right back to the point of oil and gas extraction. People want no part in adding to plastics in the oceans or spreading microplastics into our water, soils and food. Nor do they want to be subjected to the cynical betrayal of consumer built-in obsolescence. Patience with government policy and corporate greenwashing is wearing thin. Towards Zero Waste offers clear guidance for anyone wanting to actively be part of the solutions and not the problems.

Caitlin Press Chicken Poop for the Soul: In Search of Food

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFood sovereignty goes beyond addressing the need to secure a daily food source. Food sovereignty means having the right to determine where your food comes from and how it is produced. In 2008, alarmed by the impact agro-business was having on Canadian food quality and security, Kristeva Dowling decided to take control of her own food source. In an attempt to achieve 100 percent self-sufficiency on her small holding in BC''s Bella Coola Valley, she ploughed under her land, converted her garage to an intensive care unit for chickens and learned to hunt, fish, gather and preserve her own food. In the tradition of the "back-to-the-landers" of the ''60s, Dowling sheds the habits of her urban life and, with no agricultural background, begins an emotional and political journey towards independence. Dowling''s story is a witty, humorous and often bizarre journey of trial and error. Between rendering maple syrup, mothering baby chicks, canning hundreds of pounds of preserves, tracking wild game and growing her own wheat, Dowling finds time to reflect on her new-found tangible skills, her intangible problems and the politics and legislative barriers that face BC''s small farming community. This book is about a common dream: to leave the city and return to a simpler life. It is a story of success, failure and determination, which is guaranteed to make you laugh, shake your head in disbelief and get damned angry.

Book SynopsisOllie Hunter is back with his second book, Join the Greener Revolution. This time he's tackling sustainability in our day-to-day lives and explaining why our current system isn't working and exploring future options for how we can create and live in a more sustainable world. Following the groundbreaking 30 Easy Ways to Join the Food Revolution, Ollie Hunter is back with his second book – and this time he's tackling everyday sustainability. Returning to the three main principles introduced in his first book: Zero Waste, Organic and 50% Produce within 30 miles, Ollie illustrates how we can endeavour to use natural resources sustainably. All chapters are punctuated with Ollie's trademark recipes from Tomato Leaf Focaccia to Dandelion and Courgette Pakoras and Chickpea Scotch Eggs with Aquafaba Aioli. Join the Greener Revolution is split into three main sections:Home – How do we make our homes more green? From kitchen to bathroom and into the bedroom, this book looks at ways we can transform our houses into easy-to-run, energy-efficient homes. It's time to quit cling film, make our own shampoo, consider where are clothes come from.Community – This section outlines ideas we can bring to our daily lives, from taking a break (and avoiding palm oil chocolate bars) and getting to know our neighbours, to collaborating with our community, and linking local businesses together to cut down on waste.World – Who takes the blame and does it really matter? The way to a more joyful life is through forgiveness, positive visualisation and meditation. Ollie balances these steps with a more environmentally conscious system of economics and a move away from individuality and 'non-responsibility' so we can create a more sustainable, ecological and mindful world. Join the Greener Revolution is a manifesto calling us to come together, to take responsibility and strive to rebuild our relationships with our local communities, our individual connection to the world, and rediscover the joy in living and eating green.

  • Going Zero: One Family's Journey to Zero Waste

Canbury Press Going Zero: One Family's Journey to Zero Waste

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisONE FAMILY’S REVOLT AGAINST EVERYDAY POLLUTION When a beanbag sent thousands of polystyrene balls flying through her garden, Kate Hughes decided to make a break with the throwaway society. She and her husband transformed the lives of their ordinary family of four. They ditched plastic, shunned supermarkets, cooked all meals from scratch, bought only second-hand clothes, and made their own cleaning agents. Then they went deeper – greening every aspect of their home life, from their gas and electricity to their car, from their money to their IT. The Hugheses have achieved the ‘zero waste’ goal of sending nothing to landfill. Now they are going even further… Told with refreshing humility and humour, this eye-opening story shows that a well-lived life doesn’t have to come wrapped in plastic. Packed with handy tips, it reveals much about what makes a fulfilling modern family – and how readers can empower themselves to preserve the climate, forests and seas. And, heart-warmingly, how that can lead to a more relaxing life. Extract Cooking our own meals Wrestling out of the firm grip of the supermarkets has had other, unexpected benefits, too. It’s undoubtedly cheaper to cook from scratch, especially if you can batch cook and fill every available space in your oven to reduce energy costs. The need to become the more organised, list-writing type of shoppers has also helped dramatically cut our food waste. We’re lucky that we can and do buy our raw ingredients from small, independent retailers that source from nearby suppliers and growers and pass on our questions about sustainability, sometimes even with enthusiasm. But what we hadn’t anticipated were the indirect effects of a brand vacuum. If you ever pop round to ours and start randomly opening our kitchen cupboards, fridge or freezer they would probably remind you of a blind taste test or an episode of the BBC’s Eat Well for Less. There’s definitely food in there, but it’s all in label-less jars, paper bags or sometimes even sacks for bulk items like bread flour and oats. At first, visitors find the lack of familiar packaging quite unsettling. We get a lot of questions that start: ‘Is this proper/real/like…?’ as guests hold jars up to the light with badly disguised scepticism. On the plus side, our children now have zero pester power. We don’t need to navigate the snack shuffle at the supermarket checkout because they have no hope of deploying the ‘It’s not the one I like’ argument at mealtimes. Nor, for that matter, have the adults. ... But we were starting to realise that making the journey was leading to more questions than answers, more grey areas, misinformation and conflicts of interest than we ever imagined – and that was just about food. We hadn’t even got started on anything else that came into our home yet. Take a single, uncontroversial ingredient, let’s say peppers. Should we buy them grown in a UK hothouse or ones trucked in from Spain? What if the Spanish ones are organic? Or the only UK option is wrapped in plastic? Which is better for the environment? Or at least less harmful? If we ever want to eat peppers again without negatively impacting the planet in some way are we going to have to grow our own? Because self-sufficiency wasn’t really part of the plan.... All we could do was dive in and hope we didn’t drown in the detail as we swam around looking for food that worked for us and the planet. We started with the problem of transport because food mileage was a well established measure that meant we could actually make some decisions based on numbers for once. Or, at least, we thought we could. Three quarters of all the fruit and veg now eaten in the UK is imported. Almost all the fruit we eat has been grown overseas, and soft fruit in particular is flown in. It turns out that the UK only produces half of all the food that is consumed on these shores – which is somewhat patriotically disconcerting as well as practically unsustainable. Global sourcing is not a new approach to feeding a nation. One of our family stories is the recollection of the first banana my great uncle ever tasted after the Second World War, shipped from the other side of the world and unloaded onto the Liverpool docks. We were very aware that bananas came from overseas. But the fact that such a vast proportion of the apples eaten in Britain are imported from South Africa, or at best France, when the fruit grows very well in the miles of orchards you can see from the motorway near our house seemed to be absurd. The obvious solution appeared to be only to buy food produced not just in the UK but as close to our immediate vicinity as possible. That immediately threw up two questions. The first we were becoming increasingly familiar with. Were we really prepared to give up things we took great pleasure in for the sake of an unquantifiable, but undoubtedly minuscule effect? Or even just to settle for not adding to the runaway levels of damage that our disconnected food shop was causing each and every day? We are children of the 90s. We grew up safe in the knowledge that the world’s produce was at our fingertips at any time of the year. When we were kids, cuisine was regularly valued on the exoticism of its ingredients. Even if your palate was resolutely British, a Sunday roast at an ageing auntie’s always included the smug mention that the family was consuming lamb imported from the other side of the world. Even in our twenties, the craze for exotic bottled water shipped, plastic encased, in vast quantities from tropical islands thousands of miles away, packed a serious economic punch. And then there’s the avocado – a native of Mexico and now all but a dictionary definition of the British Millennial. We had come of age and then brought our children into the world on the assumption that it was normal to buy exotic food cheaply all year round. Things were clearly going to have to change, starting with my obsession with avocado on toast. But the second question was whether a straightforward food mile approach was even a worthwhile aim. When I put the question of food miles to Riverford Organic Farmers, the sustainably produced veg box people, they told me that for most of the year our carbon impact would be smaller if we bought organic tomatoes trucked in from Spain than those heated thanks to fossil fuels in a UK hothouse. That means the answer has to be to eat food grown in the UK at the time of year it is traditionally produced. We finally arrived at a robust solution – seasonal, native eating. Book SynopsisHow can we become more in tune with nature, even in the heart of the city? Once upon a time, a burnt-out Claire Dunn spent a year living off the grid in a wilderness survival experiment. Yet love and the possibilities of human connection drew her back to the city, where she soon found herself as overscheduled, addicted to her phone, and lost in IKEA as the rest of us. Given all the city offers — comfort, convenience, community, and opportunity — she wants to stay. But to do so, she’ll have to learn how to rewild her own urban soul. Claire swims in city rivers, forages in the suburbs, and explores many other practices to connect to the world around her. Rewilding the Urban Soul is a field guide to being at one with nature, wherever you are.Trade Review‘In Rewilding the Urban Soul, Claire asks an important question, “How can I expect us to fall in love with the world in the way that’s so needed if it’s dependent on going bush for a year? No, it has to be possible, right where we are.” A cliffhanger from that point on, Claire’s wonderful storytelling, research, and perspectives make it clear it’s not only possible, but it’s incredibly healing and fun! This book is essential for our times.’ -- Jon Young, author of Coyote’s Guide to Connecting with Nature and What the Robin Knows‘This beautiful and hopeful new memoir by Claire Dunn, about reconnecting with nature in the city, will leave you informed and inspired.’ * Stylist *‘Love makes us move to the city. Duty makes us stay. But how do we create a liveable habitat for our bodies and spirits and relations in these murderous places? You might find the answer in this book.’ -- Tyson Yunkaporta, author of Sand Talk‘In this beautifully written book, Claire Dunn encourages the reader to welcome back the fox woman with her untameable pelt and unfamiliar woody scent, to cherish numinous encounters, to fall in love with the world, to be enchanted once again. She inspires the possibility to wildness, both inner and outer, for all those living within city limits and beyond. Rewilding the Urban Soul will stir people’s souls, for sure.’ -- Miriam Lancewood, author of Woman in the Wilderness and Wild at Heart‘Claire Dunn, author of the classic My Year Without Matches, takes her next step into rewilding — the process of waking to the sit spot we call Earth. Even in cities, where the majority of people now live, we can still become indigenous to our universe. I was deeply moved by the eloquence of each page and the soul that fuels her words.’ -- Richard Louv, author of Our Wild Calling and Last Child in the Woods‘Looking for what’s untamed and true, but you’re ensconced in the city? No need to leave town. The wild is all around you — and in you, and as you — and you could not have a more seasoned, engaging, or big-hearted guide than Claire Dunn, she who has devoted years to wandering trail, thicket, and waterway, as well as the urban wilds. No matter your address, this deeply wise and spellbinding book is your portal out of the Matrix and into the Real, into the windswept world as beloved, into the mysteries of both nature and your own psyche, a siren’s song you cannot afford to resist.’ -- Bill Plotkin, author of Soulcraft, Wild Mind, and The Journey of Soul Initiation‘In the same way that Wohlleben wants us to visit the woods to connect with nature, Claire Dunn implores us to search for it within our urban environments. Spawned from a year living completely off-grid, Dunn explores the practices that make it possible for even the most ardent city slicker to enjoy a healthier relationship with the wilderness that surrounds us all.’ * Happy Mag, starred review *‘Part memoir, part urgent appeal, Claire Dunn’s new book explores how our urban lives can become more intimate with nature … [Rewilding the Urban Soul] is made of love, and it draws us in.’ -- Tracy Sorensen * The Newtown Review of Books *‘[T]hose intrigued by the wildness just beyond their apartment windows will find this to be a gem.’ * Publishers Weekly *Praise for My Year Without Matches: ‘This is a brave and adventurous book - a memoir that took me into the heart of the wilderness through the eyes of a courageous young woman. Out of stock

Book SynopsisWhole Earth Living argues that human society needs a change of consciousness if we are going to ensure long-term human survival on Earth. It uses long-term history, evolutionary biology, neuroscience and philosophy to develop a new sustainability paradigm. The paradigm focuses on opportunities for optimal human and ecological welfare by reconnecting earth, history, body and mind. This book is a hopeful one. After establishing the losses, it suggests that there are fundamental re-orientations that humans as individuals and members of society can make that are more hopeful and more meaningful than some of the current formulations offered for a sustainable future. Instead of renouncing aspects of our lives, we can return to some forms of self-sufficiency (gardening, sewing, and woodworking, for example) individually, within households and communities in order to receive positive benefits, such as reducing disease and isolation.Trade ReviewIf we are to take full advantage of the chance for a planetary reset that the COVID 19 pandemic affords us, Kathleen Smythe's deep dive into our genetic and cultural inheritance is a good place to start. Smythe's analysis of the role of feet and hands in human evolution alone is worth the price of the book and can change your life. Even more important is her proposal for an education geared to homecoming. Focused on socially useful work and community resilience, Smythe's case for place based, experiential learning will produce ecologically informed citizens who will help us save our world. by John D. Fairfield Professor at History Department at Xavier University; Kathleen Smythe’s Whole Earth Living combines scholarship and personal experience, analysis and activism, thinking and feeling—the kind of thoughtful work we need from universities today. With a historian’s deep sense of history, Smythe honestly faces the crises—social and ecological—that define our world and offers a framework for thinking about a way back into our bodies and to the earth. This is a book that is both bracing and tender, as Smythe finds ways to deal with harsh realities that are restorative. Whole Earth Living is recommended reading for those of us in industrial societies who are searching for more engaged ways to live today that can help create more options for the future.; —Robert Jensen, Emeritus Professor, University of Texas at Austin, author of Plain Radical: Living, Loving, and Learning to Leave the Planet Gracefully.; Kathleen Smythe's Whole Earth Living sets out an ambitious goal: re-storying the present in order to embrace and nourish interdependence. A wide-ranging historical analysis of human evolution, religion, technology, and economy, Whole Earth Living brings a new view of the future into sight, one in which humans make meaning together through embodied connection with each other and with the Earth. -- Hannah Eisler Burnett, Center for Humans and Nature;Kathleen Smythe’s Whole Earth Living is a much-needed book at this major junction point in human history. Her hopes are no less bold than restoring the value that has been lost from human lives in a cloud of technological gadgetry and achieving a robust mode of sustainability that embraces pan-species flourishing.; Smythe brings her rich historical understanding of agriculture, technology, and politics to explore how humanity has lost its way. And, beyond this critique of modern humanity’s rocky path, she presents a vision for what meaningful work and meaningful lives could and should look like, now and in the future, with a style that is at once highly readable and persuasive. “We need to look differently at who humans were, and who we are now,” Smythe writes, cutting to the nub of the issue. “Then we might be able to achieve the cultural change that could overturn the dominant understanding of our relationship to nature.”; While the book draws on the authors’ experience of living in the United States, as well as Africa, the issues discussed, and their potential ramifications, will be relevant to any citizen of a country whose government is currently paving an unsustainable path into a hostile future. And, as Smythe argues, changes are possible. “Such changes are not cumbersome, depressing, or impossible,” she writes. Instead, they are “realistic, hope-filled, and a more honest reflection of where we have come from and who we might be as a species.”; Smythe’s excellent book holds the potential to help ensure humanity takes the right path at the junction point.;—Joe Gray, Associate Editor, The Ecological Citizen; Chair of GENIE (the Global Ecocentric Network for Implementing Ecodemocracy), and a Knowledge Advisor on ecological ethics for the United Nations’ Harmony with Nature programme.

Contemplating what a love of nature really means and implies, the author weaves a narrative of interlinked ideas that are integral to humanity's positive cohabitation of Earth with the rest of life.Trade ReviewA lyrical mix of backyard naturalism, Do-It-Yourself rewilding, eco-philosophical exegeses, and reflections on "the storm of now," Joe Gray's work is a grounded meditation on how we can meet the present-day Earth calamity. Without a whiff of didacticism, Gray shows us how to listen, how to care, and how to discover the timeless joys of being Earth citizens. May humanity awaken to the love and awe that unassumingly flow from every page.; Eileen Crist, author of Abundant Earth; Thirteen Paces by Four is a book at the intersection of the timeless and the timely, the global and the most intimately local. Gray's prose powerfully illustrates how paying attention to the more-than-human world, especially in our most easily overlooked daily encounters with it, is entwined with cultivating an ethical relationship with that world. Written with an understated sophistication, the book's portraits of the wild in even the most seemingly tame environs sketch valuable and edifying points of contact between ecological principle and practice.; Luke Philip Plotica, Assistant Professor of Political Science, Virginia Tech; With Thirteen Paces by Four, Joe Gray has written a new classic of ecological literature. I take my organic cotton hat off to him. ; Patrick Curry, Editor-in-Chief of The Ecological Citizen

Book SynopsisBeyond precipitating illness and death in a great many people across the globe, the Covid-19 pandemic has had a diverse range of further impacts. Among these, it has revealed that rapid large-scale change in the behaviour of societies is possible, it has led to inspiring stories of human endeavour (and dispiriting stories of human greed), and it has offered a stark warning as to the fragility of current economies. In addition, the pandemic has provided a desperately needed opportunity for reflection on humanity's present trajectory, a course that is destroying the life-support systems on which we—and the innumerable species with whom we share the Earth—depend. In this collection of new writing, a number of the world's most exciting environmental thinkers provide their visions for what a radically new normal could look like in a post- Covid world. Between them, they shine a light on a spectrum of key topics, including economics, energy, food systems, education, climate, rewilding, animal rights, and communication.

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisStarting with the notion that some traditions--like drinking green tea for health and mental acuity--embody timeless wisdom for living, Toshimi A. Kayaki offers dozens of wise old Japanese ways for improving how you look and feel while respecting nature and the environment. Carry your own pair of chopsticks, wear five-toe socks, eat salty plums, use rice water as floor wax, do "eco-laundry," and always set aside 10 percent for savings ...you get the idea. By leading a "green tea life," you'll help yourself and the planet. Toshimi A. Kayaki, born and raised in Japan, now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and has published twenty-two books on women's and cross-cultural issues.Trade Review"This diminutive book is packed as tightly as an obento box with an array of mini-essays. And like a good Japanese obento lunch, which always includes five colors (white for rice, green for vegetable, brown for protein, et al.), this book is composed of a little of this and a little of that, all wrapped up neatly in the philosophy that Toshimi Kayaki calls "green tea living." From exercising more to using cash instead of credit cards, these tips will delight anyone who likes to consume their Japanese culture like an umeboshi--a red pickled plum that's the cherry on top." --The Japan Times "Centered around the Japanese tradition of drinking green tea for relaxation and health, Kayaki's upbeat book offers simple tips for a balanced, sustainable lifestyle." --The Sierra Club "[Green Tea Living] offers a vision of the way things could be--a vision living better by following old traditions that proved themselves hundreds of years. Very recommended for everyone who is looking to be healthier, happier and more eco-friendly." --Eco-Libris "In this delightful paperback with illustrations by Miyuki Matsuo, you will find a treasure trove of ideas about simplicity, thrift, homemade remedies, and Japanese wisdom. Kayaki has adopted what she calls "green tea living"--which includes low-calorie foods, regular exercise (walk or bike instead of driving), and meditation. She also offers advice and tips on regularly eating miso soup, using reflexology, trying olive oil on dry skin, facial message with a spoon, and suggestions for living a more frugal life. Not only does green tea have cardiovascular benefits such as lowering blood pressure, it can also be used on the skin as an anti-aging cosmetic, as a means of preventing cavities and taking away bad breath, as a cleaning tool, as a fertilizer for gardening, and as a weight loss tactic (drink a cup before your dinner). Green Tea Living by Toshimi Kayaki is a handy and creative guide to an eco-friendly life." --Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, Spirituality & Practice "The author's writing style is simple and sweet ... [Green Tea Living] is uplifting and comprehensive." --Whitney Halberg, ForeWord * Winner of the 2011 Benjamin Franklin Award in the Self-Help category * Honorable Mention at the 2011 London Book Festival * Honorable Mention at the 2011 Green Book Festival * Finalist in the Environment /Green category of the 2010 National Indie Excellence Awards
