Book SynopsisERA Award 2014 Finalist: Best Secondary Resource Non-ICT_______________No matter what you teach, there is a 100 Ideas title for you!The 100 Ideas series offers teachers practical, easy-to-implement strategies and activities for the classroom. Each author is an expert in their field and is passionate about sharing best practice with their peers. Each title includes at least ten additional extra-creative Bonus Ideas that won''t fail to inspire and engage all learners._______________ Conflicting government diktat and changeable Ofsted frameworks means that navigating the path to outstanding can be challenging. However, the integrity of an outstanding lesson will always be the same and this book attempts to bottle that formula so that you can recreate it time and time again. In his first book, Twitter phenomenon and outstanding teacher Ross Morrison McGill provides a bank of inspirational ideas that can be picked up five minutes beTrade ReviewI used the The 5 Minute Lesson Plan and The 5 Minute Interview Plan to prepare for my second interview in my training year. They really helped me to focus on what I wanted to achieve in the lesson and ensured that I showed the school the best of what I have to offer. I was successful and I can't wait to use the 5 Minute Plan in my NQT year. Thanks Teacher Toolkit! * Danielle Manning, History NQT *As you would expect of its author, Ross Morrison McGill aka @TeacherToolkit, has produced a book brim full of creative and sparkling ideas to help make teachers’ lives easier. Covering everything from the ubiquitous #5MinuteLessonPlan, to hints and tips on behaviour and practical ideas for lessons, it is easy to dip in and out of and is bound to be a hit. So if you need inspiration to help you plan outstanding lessons, you need look no further – this gem of a book is for you. * Heather Leatt, School Improvement Adviser *Ross has become a new media phenomenon; and this book is redolent of his happy relationship with emerging and emerged technologies. While it is conventionally published, it includes a deal of unconventional thought, and that thought is expressed in a way that takes in every possible media for conveying ideas and information: there are hashtags, weblinks, ideas for taking things forwards, links to videos he has made. Where a talented teacher might come up with a couple of groundbreaking ideas over a career. Ross Morrison McGill has ten before breakfast: some are more conventional and massively influential (the five minute lesson plan, and pose, pause, pounce, bounce) some wilder and more in keeping with the guy I met at the oche: (hopscotch calculators and paper plates for AfL strategies). All-in-all though this is a book of ideas: the manifold ideas of an experienced and talented campaigner, who keeps himself up-to-the-minute with new technologies, who still plays in the classroom every day, and who knows the value of quirk. I wish he was my teacher! * Phil Beadle, author, English teacher and educational consultant *This book is written and produced by an excellent well respected practitioner and I know it will fly off the shelves! It's a collection of 100 ideas for planning & delivering outstanding lessons, not occasionally but consistently. Every secondary school teacher in every school needs their own copy of this practical and useful book - it will change their lives and make their lessons even better. Teachers can use this book as individuals planning their lessons or they could use it when planning jointly with colleagues. There is something in here for everybody! I would advise secondary head teachers to purchase a copy for all their teachers and to introduce it on an INSET day then let them loose in teams to get on with planning. Revisit it as a school or a team every term and ask teachers which tips they have used and how they helped make their lesson even better. Ross McGill is very well known and well respected through the Teachers Toolkit & Teachmeets which have put teachers in charge of their own CPD - which is exactly the way it should be. I recommend this book (and Ross) without reservation.' * Kenny Frederick, Retired headteacher *Wonderfully digestible, and just about the right size to slip into a jacket pocket, this little book makes the ideal companion for any busy educator...You won't be disappointed. * Teach Secondary *fantastic text... Everything in the book will help you progress as a teacher and as a school. * The Teacher *Table of ContentsSnappy starters/ The first words/ The whiteboard says it all/ Routines!/ Monday morning mantra/ The five minute lesson plan/ Smarter marking/ Don't drink and teach!/ Literateness/ Crossing the curricular/ #Bananas/ Bloom's Post-it/ he five minute marking plan/ Use me, I'm a TA!/ Pitch perfect/ Smiley faces/ Fix that tie!/ Student-led homework/ F.A.I.L./ Takeaway homework/ Target practice/ Show off/ Reducing teacher talk/ Rapid progress/ Student Meet/ Breathe/ The five minute lesson evaluation/ MINT/ KISS/ No excuses!/ Shut up!/ Twitter for the classroom

Book SynopsisThis title draws together well-respected contributors to look forward to the future of geography education and explore key questions in the field. "Geography, Education and the Future" considers the future of both geography and geography education by exploring the following questions: How can geography education prepare young people for the places, environments and societies they will inhabit in the future? How should geography be reframed to take into account the major social and environmental changes wrought by growing consumption, restructuring of economies and technologies, and the dynamic connections between local and global? How can geography and geography education present an agenda that can be taken seriously and implemented in the twenty first century? A range of geographical themes are considered through four sections: children, young people and geography; place, space and change; mediating forms of geographical knowledge; and, global ethics, environment and citizenship. Each section concludes with a discussant critically summarising the content.Trade Review'A detailed discussion of the challenges that geography as a subject faces both now and in the future. It encourages geography teachers to assess the relevance of the geography that they currently teach and consider which aspects of geography really matter.'Ellen Clarkson, Geography Teacher, George Salter Collegiate Academy, West Bromwich, UK‘This is an impressive publication from authors working at the leading edge of geography education research in England today. Each chapter captures original and innovative thinking and practice in school geography. Coverage is comprehensive, with sections focusing on student participation in geography curriculum-making; the cultural politics of space and place; issues around geographical knowledge and the ethico-political responsibilities of geography educators. A scholarly engagement with current and controversial issues in geography education is conveyed in a clear, refreshing style. This excellent publication will have appeal across a wide national and international audience of readers interested in the revitalisation of the school geography curriculum.'Christine Winter, Senior Lecturer, Department of Educational Studies, University of Sheffield, UK‘This set of topical and engaging essays moves forward the discipline of geography education. Each author draws on an impressive range of literature, contextualising their chosen focus within a range of academic fields. Discussants draw together shared threads within sections and suggest questions or implications raised by the material. This creates a coherent and lively experience for the reader, akin to being present at a seminar series. Geography, Education and the Future will be valuable to those working within geography education nationally and internationally.'Liz Taylor, Lecturer in Geography Education and Secondary PGCE Course Manager, Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge, UK‘Each chapter builds a compelling case for the role for the discipline, its perspectives, content and skills in elementary and secondary school as well as in adult life. The contributors place geography and 21st century subject based expectations on the same educational stage, making practical connections among ethics, citizenship, and geographic content at the elementary and secondary levels of schooling.' Joseph P. Stoltman, Professor of Geography and Science Education, Western Michigan University, USA'This is a book edited and written by those who are at the forefront of geographical education in the twenty-first century. While it acknowledges the need to revitalise geography in schools, it does not shy away from the difficulties of such an aim. Its intellectual compass is wide, from considering the components of geographical education to epistemological questions, curriculum theory, and ethical and pedagogical issues. Its emphasis on the worthwhile ideas of geography, as Michael Young points out, is more limited. It is a book which will appeal to those who wish to examine critically their thinking about and practice of geographical education.' Norman Graves, Curriculum JournalThis book should be required reading for all geography teachers who wish to adapt their curriculum to make their subject relevant to the citizens of the 21st century. -- GeographyThis is a book edited and written by those who are at the forefront of geographical education in the twenty-first century. Book SynopsisGetting certified to teach high school mathematics typically requires completing a course in real analysis. Yet most teachers point out real analysis content bears little resemblance to secondary mathematics and report it does not influence their teaching in any significant way. This textbook is our attempt to change the narrative. It is our belief that analysis can be a meaningful part of a teacher's mathematical education and preparation for teaching. This book is a companion text. It is intended to be a supplemental resource, used in conjunction with a more traditional real analysis book. The textbook is based on our efforts to identify ways that studying real analysis can provide future teachers with genuine opportunities to think about teaching secondary mathematics. It focuses on how mathematical ideas are connected to the practice of teaching secondary mathematics–and not just the content of secondary mathematics itself. Discussions around pedagogy are premised on the belief that the way mathematicians do mathematics can be useful for how we think about teaching mathematics. The book uses particular situations in teaching to make explicit ways that the content of real analysis might be important for teaching secondary mathematics, and how mathematical practices prevalent in the study of real analysis can be incorporated as practices for teaching. This textbook will be of particular interest to mathematics instructors–and mathematics teacher educators–thinking about how the mathematics of real analysis might be applicable to secondary teaching, as well as to any prospective (or current) teacher who has wondered about what the purpose of taking such courses could be.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Teaching Principles.- Chapter 2: Equivalent Real Numbers and Infinite Decimals.- Chapter 3: Sequence Convergence and Irrational Decimal Approximations.- Chapter 4: Algebraic Limit Theorem and Error Accumulation.- Chapter 5: Divergence Description and Criteria and Logic in Communication.- Chapter 6: Continuity and Definitions.- Chapter 7: Intermediate Value Theorem and Implicit Assumptions.- Chapter 8: Continuity, Monotonicity, Inverse Functions and Solving Equations.- Chapter 9: Differentiability and the Secant Slope Function.- Chapter 10: Differentiation Rules and Attending to Scope.- Chapter 11: Taylor’s Theorem and Modeling Complex with Simple.- Chapter 12: The Riemann Integral and Area-Preserving Transformations.- Chapter 13: The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus and Conceptual Explanation.
