Indiana University Press Music in World War II

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewThe newly published Indiana University Press book, Music in World War II: Coping with Wartime in Europe and the United States, has enlarged my understanding of how music became a tool of war for allies and adversaries alike, as opponents became allies and allies became opponents in a shifting landscape of diplomacy. Music as propaganda wasn't on my radar as a child. . . . The editors designed a book to show a broad base of music's power to shape citizens and soldiers in wartime. They chose essayists whose imperative brings us into the moments of real people in a world of divisiveness. In my childhood household I was instructed, "We are fighting for ideals, for 'liberty and justice for all.' When the war is over and we are winners we have work to do to make America a safe place for everyone. Always make something better for everyone." A powerful charge for a little kid. -- Rita Kohn * Nuvo *Music in World War II is a book that is really worth reading not only because it is a true page-turner and the stories are unique and fascinating, but also because it truly adds to our knowledge of World War II events from a perspective that is even wider than just music. -- Alexandros Charkiolakis - The Friends of Music Society * Music Reference Services Quarterly *Table of ContentsDedicationPreface / Roberta Montemorra MarvinIntroduction: Music and Global War in the Short Twentieth Century / Pamela M. Indiana University Press Music in World War II

Book SynopsisHow can music withstand the death and destruction brought on by war? Global conflicts of the 20th century fundamentally transformed not only national boundaries, power relations, and global economies, but also the arts and culture of every nation involved. An important, unacknowledged aspect of these conflicts is that they have unique musical soundtracks. Music in World War II explores how music and sound took on radically different dimensions in the United States and Europe before, during, and after World War II. Additionally, the collection examines the impact of radio and film as the disseminators of the war's musical soundtrack. Contributors contend that the European and American soundtrack of World War II was largely one of escapism rather than the lofty, solemn, heroic, and celebratory mode of war music in the past. Furthermore, they explore the variety of experiences of populations forced from their homes and interned in civilian and POW camps in Europe and the United States, exTrade ReviewThe newly published Indiana University Press book, Music in World War II: Coping with Wartime in Europe and the United States, has enlarged my understanding of how music became a tool of war for allies and adversaries alike, as opponents became allies and allies became opponents in a shifting landscape of diplomacy. Indiana University Press The Polish Catholic Church under German Occupati

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewJonathan Huener, professor of history at the University of Vermont, has produced a definitive study of the Catholic Church in western Poland under German occupation -- Kevin P Spicer, C.S.C., Stonehill College * Contemporary Church History Quarterly *Jonathan Huener's careful examination of the fate of the Catholic Church in western Poland—the Nazi German "Warthegau"—during World War II triangulates an impressive variety of sources in German and Polish to assess Nazi religious policy and the experience of Polish Catholics victimized by it. . . . This is essential reading for those interested in Nazi empire, Polish nationalism, or the history of the Catholic Church. -- Jadwiga Biskupska * H-Poland *Huener's book is an impressive new contribution to scholarship on Nazi church policies and occupation policies and will be essential reading for all those working in these fields. Nicely complementing Catherine Epstein's biography of Arthur Greiser, it provides a meticulously researched and judicious account of Nazi rule in this pivotal German-Polish borderland. -- Jim Bjork * Central European History *This impeccably researched study proffers an invaluable analysis and a first Anglophone synthesis of Polish, German, and Catholic sources, while it also assimilates an important secondary literature in Polish and German, including the recent, ground-breaking Polish historiography on the Holocaust. -- Monika Rice * Journal of Church and State *The Polish Catholic Church under German Occupation by Jonathan Huener is an engaging study that asks important questions about the Nazi attitude towards the Catholic Church in general, and the Polish Catholic Church in particular. Interestingly, as Huener emphasizes, the Nazi policy towards the Catholic Church was neither consistent throughout the war nor uniform in all the Nazi-occupied territories. . . . The book is a fascinating addition to what we know about the way the Nazi regime operated. It is great work that will be beneficial to historians of Poland, the Second World Word, and Nazism. • A Jewish Marshall Plan

Indiana University Press A Jewish Marshall Plan

Book SynopsisWhile the role the United States played in France's liberation from Nazi Germany is widely celebrated, it is less well known that American Jewish individuals and organizations mobilized to reconstruct Jewish life in France after the Holocaust. In A Jewish Marshall Plan, Laura Hobson Faure explores how American Jews committed themselves and hundreds of millions of dollars to bring much needed aid to their French coreligionists. Hobson Faure sheds light on American Jewish chaplains, members of the Armed Forces, and those involved with Jewish philanthropic organizations who sought out Jewish survivors and became deeply entangled with the communities they helped to rebuild. While well intentioned, their actions did not always meet the needs and desires of the French Jews. A Jewish Marshall Plan examines the complex interactions, exchanges, and solidarities created between American and French Jews following the Holocaust. • True to My God and Country

Indiana University Press True to My God and Country

Book SynopsisTrade Review"The stories of the more than 500,000 Jewish men and women who served in the American military during World War II have never been told with more honesty and heart than they are here. Françoise Ouzan has written a history that challenges, educates, and inspires. This book is a must-have for any World War II history shelf."—Michael S. Neiberg, author of When France Fell: Vichy and the Fate of the Anglo-American Alliance."Françoise Ouzan demonstrates the salience of emotions such as solidarity, empathy, and the yearning for honor for the experience of American Jewish men and women who served in the Second World War. Ouzan's canvas is global, but her approach is personal, drawing on a rich array of life-writing to tell a deeply moving story."—Derek Penslar, author of Jews and the Military: A History"True to My God and Country makes an important contribution to the scholarship of World War II, Jewish-American history, and women's history. It highlights the ways in which Jewish servicewomen crossed gender and social boundaries. It also illuminates how Jewish service women strove to be accepted in a military framework, and how they successfully confronted anti-Jewish attitudes."—Patricia Kollander, Florida Atlantic University"Research on the Jewish experience during and vis-à-vis World War II and theHolocaust naturally focuses on the fate of Jews under the control of Nazi Germany and its allies and on the reactions to that fate in the free world. Antisemitism experienced by Jews outside this orbit has hitherto drawn only minimal attention. In this fascinating account of the experiences of the many Jewish GIs in the American military at all fronts of the global war, Françoise Ouzan provides an in-depth picture of their coping with the widespread antisemitism that they suffered among their fellow soldiers. Their unexpected encounter with anti-Jewish hostility in French North Africa also shaped their Jewish identity. This excellent study is a most valuable contribution to the history of antisemitism, to the broader picture of the Jewish war experience, and to American Jewish history."—Dan Michman, Head, The International Institute for Holocaust Research; and the John Najmann Chair of Holocaust Studies, Yad Vashem

Book SynopsisReturns to print a classic work about the question of reparations to survivors of forced labour in Nazi concentration campsTrade Review"... this book tells the story of great courage and determination by survivors and their allies to try to compel German companies to make at least partial amends for the use of slave labor during the war. Yet it is also a story of an equally determined refusal to see that past honestly, to own up to it, and to voluntarily try to make it right. As such, whatever its limitations as a historical analysis, it will undoubtedly continue to serve as a valuable starting point for thinking about the efforts to make good again the harm done during the Third Reich. -" -net, April 2005Table of ContentsPreliminary Table of Contents: PrefaceForeword by Telford TaylorPrefaceAcknowledgmentsMap1. Book SynopsisLouis Johnson was FDR's Assistant Secretary of War and the architect of industrial mobilization plans that put the nation on a war footing prior to its entry into World War II. Later, as Truman's Secretary of Defense, Johnson was given the difficult job of unifying the armed forces and carrying out Truman's orders to reduce defense expenditures.Trade Review"... If Patrick Henry was right about the 'lamp of experience' as our only guide to the future, then this book should be read by all who work within the defense community. The authors offer insightful and timeless conclusions about the personalities that clash and the relationships that form at the very highest levels of the American government. -Parameters http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usawc/Parameters/06autumn/au" -rev.htm "Without question this is an important new addition to World War II and Cold War historiography... Highly recommended." -Douglas Brinkley, author of Dean Acheson: The Cold War Years and The Unfinished Presidency: Jimmy Carter's Journey beyond the White House "A remarkably objective, yet sympathetic, study of Louis Johnson's life and career. Now only half-remembered,... Johnson was a major national figure. Colorful, aggressive, independent-minded, egotistical, his strong views and conflicts with Dean Acheson proved to be his undoing. All in all, a fascinating tale." -James R. Schlesinger, former Secretary of Defense "McFarland and Roll have performed a real service in rescuing from obscurity this Democratic mover and shaker. Their account of the rise and fall of Louis Johnson provides us with the fullest depiction yet of an important Washington figure employed for better or worse as a blunt instrument of policy change by both Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman." -Alonzo L. Hamby, author of Man of the People: A Life of Harry S. Truman and For the Survival of Democracy: Franklin Roosevelt and the World Crisis of the 1930s "[Johnson's] career is a cautionary tale of how even the most ruthlessly effective men can become pawns in the Washington power game. Book SynopsisThis book is Peter F. Dembowski’s memoir of his time as a Polish soldier, serving as a narrative of life before, during, and after World War II. Trade Review"Memoirs Red and White: Poland, the War, and After is a powerful portrait of Polish life in the late 1930s and 1940s, told beautifully through the lens of Peter F. Dembowski's heroic family. Dembowski recounts the adventures of his brave and ethical family members during the Depression, as members of the konspiracja, as well as his mother's and sister's executions in Ravensbrück. The author provides a riveting account of his own heroism during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising and his incarceration in Stalag XB near Sandbostel, as well as his life in the United States after the war. The book describes the patriotism of Poles during a very difficult era. Dembowski's book is an excellent choice for readers who want to learn more about Polish life, patriotism, and history during the Second World War." —Eric Sterling, Distinguished Research Professor of English, Auburn University at Montgomery“Peter F. Dembowski’s Memoirs Red and White: Poland, the War, and After is the moving testimony of an individual who has had firsthand knowledge of the most dramatic moments in the history of the twentieth century. His story is one of heroic courage, honesty, and optimism." —Thomas Pavel Gordon J. Laing Distinguished Service Professor in Romance Languages and Literature, University of Chicago"Memoirs Red and White vividly describes life in Poland before and during the war. It touches on the issues of war and resistance, life in the camps, and the gruesome toll of death and survival. While there is no shortage of literature on the war and camps, Dembowski adds new vignettes and details that will be of interest to a general reader. I think it is important to have Dembowski's record of the events in print as the last of the war generation is disappearing, taking with them their memories and life stories." —Michael Khodarkovsky, Loyola University Chicago"Peter F. Dembowski . . . provides an engrossing glimpse into his early life growing up in Poland prior to World War II and his subsequent immigration to Canada and eventually the United States. . . . In the summer of 1943, Dembowski participated in the Polish resistance. He was captured and detained by the Gestapo, and his release was quite unexpected by his family. A year later, Dembowski was again captured and sent to one of the many internment camps outside of Warsaw until it was liberated by the British. . . . [This] success story of a World War II survivor from Poland is enlightening, inspirational, and thoughtful." —Foreword Reviews“An impressively written and detailed autobiography, Memoirs Red and White: Poland, the War, and After showcases a life lived out in the interesting times. An informative and absorbing read from beginning to end, ‘Memoirs Red and White’ is very highly recommended for bother community and academic library Contemporary Biography collections.” —The Midwest Book Review “To this memoir [Dembowski] brings the academic’s discipline and dispassionate approach not to mention a lifetime of reflection. . . Dembowski has a flair for the out of the ordinary. Here he strives to present complexity, challenging simplistic notions of Polish-German animosity, anti-Communism, and anti-Semitism. . . This book is but a modest contribution to a fairly hefty body of material but will nonetheless reward the reader seeking insight into Poland’s world war.” —Humanities and Social Sciences Online “Written in an engaging, conversational style, Memoirs Red and White is both a witness to the tumultuous course of events in the 20th century and the record of a life truly well lived. It will certainly have appeal to those interested in Polish culture and history, World War II, the lives of Polish Americans, or biographies of academics, as well as those who enjoy stirring examples of heroism, courage, and endurance. Highly recommended, this book is suitable for public and academic libraries alike.” —Catholic Library World“Dembowski is exceptional for conveying a truthful picture of what he witnessed during the war. He avoids the trap of obviously interpreting his memories through the prism of subsequent accounts. He is impressively balanced and objective even though the account of his war-time experiences are harrowing and in many ways complex.” —European History Quarterly “This compelling memoir offers much to historians researching the twentieth century. . . . Dembowski’s memoir is particularly moving when he writes of his family. . . . Throughout his life Dembowski has drawn strength from his Christian faith. And even those who profess no faith are likely to be touched by his reflection on death in the final pages of his memoir.” —Journal of Contemporary History

  • Back to Peace

University of Notre Dame Press Back to Peace

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisScholars have rarely studied a society's return to peace as a cultural category, as a formative experience common to many lives at any time in history. This collection of original essays by historians and literary critics explores the complex and difficult question of how a culture does, in fact, return to peace after a war. Combining analyses of both literary texts and historical sources, the contributors focus on the cultural, political, and personal implications of returning to peace. The volume begins with an introductory essay by its editors, arguing for the need to consider back to peace as a significant phenomenon, not just a brief step between war and peace. The first section of the volume, Return of the Combatant, begins with an essay describing how soldiers in the trenches have imagined what civilian life would be like. This, and the four other essayson F. Scott Fitzgerald''s Tender is the Night, on Japanese POWs, on the return from World War II, and from VietTrade Review“This remarkable collection extends the analysis of war literature into a new area by asking what happens after the cessation of hostilities. How can individuals, indeed entire cultures, return to peace? This groundbreaking collection shows how war's destruction and terrible creations continue long after the conflict has ended. Essential.” —Choice“[Back to Peace] attempts an 'understanding of war' not as an absolute, but as the manifestation of contradictory human tendencies: to self-destruction and philanthropy; and its analyzes the various literary responses to the processes that individuals, communities and nations undertake in order to return to the 'prelapsarian' status quo. All the editors and contributors must be congratulated for their daring approach to a theme and label, peace, that should be debated and reviewed from the points of view of history, sociology, philosophy, politics and even anthropology. It is to the credit of Usandizaga and Monnickendam that they have conducted such a pioneering study in the field of literature.” —Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies“Back to Peace, which straddles literature, history, and politics, does not disappoint. . . .The volume aims 'to initiate the pioneering work of searching for the common language of the return to peace' by examining literature of war and literature about war. And it finds this language of a return to peace in art itself-a poignant place to begin, since artists are so tellingly among the first groups to be eradicated in repressive regimes and in times of violence.” —Human Rights & Human Welfare: An International Review of Books and Other Publications“The editors . . . present 14 essays that examine textual representations of post-conflict transitions to peace.” —Research Book News“Essays that use literary and other texts to explore the experience of returning soldiers and other societal postwar transitions.” —The Chronicle of Higher Education“Back to Peace provides a critical meditation on the contested social and cultural terrains of peacetime, from Dryden's England to the more recent diaspora of Vietnamese writers in exile. The editors of this volume bring together an international group of scholars to trouble the categories of peace and war, to expose the anxieties and ambiguities that strew the paths of postwar writers. Readers of these essays will find rich evidence that the return to peace—represented in poetry, drama, fiction, and nonfiction—is anything but peaceful for individuals or nations.” —Jane E. Schultz, Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis“The focus of this volume of essays on the literary representation of the aftermaths of wars over time and place is very significant. Although there have been many studies of gender and wartime, and this has expanded into a recognized field of academic study, little attention has been paid to the return to a peacetime landscape. To focus on this complex subject and its literature provides the opening not only for new pathways to academic teaching and research, but to important interventions in the ways we think about war literature and the many periods that fall under the rubric of ‘interwar.” —Phyllis Lassner, Northwestern University

Book SynopsisIn Soldiers of a Different Cloth, New York Times best-selling author and military historian John Wukovits tells the inspiring story of thirty-five chaplains and missionaries who, while garnering little acclaim, performed extraordinary feats of courage and persistence during World War II. Ranging in age from twenty-two to fifty-three, these University of Notre Dame priests and nuns were counselor, friend, parent, and older sibling to the young soldiers they served. These chaplains experienced the horrors of the Death March in the Philippines and the filthy holds of the infamous Hell Ships. They dangled from a parachute while descending toward German fire at Normandy and shivered in Belgium's frigid snows during the Battle of the Bulge. They languished in German and Japanese prison camps, and stood speechless at Dachau.Based on a vast collection of letters, papers, records, and photographs in the archives of the University of Notre Dame, as well as other contemporary souTrade Review"The stories of these heroic members of the Holy Cross order have never been told before. John Wukovits dug deeply into the Notre Dame archives and elsewhere to bring them to light. He does it adroitly, with a historian’s care and a writer’s heart. We are in his debt." —Fr. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., from the foreword"John Wukovits’s professional background in World War II history—over a thirty-year career he has authored ten books and served as on-air commentator and adviser for television documentaries—as well as his own association with the university as a 1967 graduate, lend credence to his research and writing. His knowledge of World War II history, combined with his ties to the university, make him ideal to tell this story of men who comprised one of Notre Dame’s greatest teams." —Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., from the introduction"As Father Joe Barry, C.S.C., said at the end of the War, ‘I believe that I have seen my share of blood, death, mud, hunger and cold.’ On the front lines, in ships under attack, in prisoner-of-war camps, in medical care facilities, these stalwart men and women brought a devoted ministry of sacramental participation, counsel, and care for the grieving. Their collective story has now been told by John Wukovits with full appreciation for the dedication, courage and deep commitment that it entailed." —Rev. Edward A. Malloy, C.S.C., President Emeritus, University of Notre Dame"This riveting account of the heroic contributions of 35 chaplains and missionaries during World War II is nearly impossible to put down. The author, John F. Wukovits, is a renowned military historian who melds rigorous research with expert storytelling. The result is an inspiring and richly detailed narrative that reveals the challenges that these religious—priests along with some brothers and sisters of Notre Dame's Congregation of Holy Cross—faced." —The Boston Pilot"This is a story that is untold and yet so important and appealing to all who believe whether Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, or agnostic. It should be read by anyone who wishes to know more about individual sacrifice, bravery, and suffering sustained by individuals during wartime for love of their fellow brothers." —Robert LeClercq, volunteer, National Museum of the Pacific War"Soldiers of a Different Cloth: Notre Dame Chaplains in World War II is excellent, and in fact a real page turner. I did not expect to enjoy so thoroughly this substantial book about a select number of priests serving during World War II. The book relies on an impressive array of primary sources to convey a compelling story of the Notre Dame priests who served during World War II." —Lyle Dorsett, Beeson Divinity School, Samford University"John Wukovits shines light on a previously little-known aspect of World War II: the vital role that chaplains—especially those from Notre Dame—played in providing spiritual comfort during times of great stress, and in aiding the sick, wounded, and others 'at the hour of their deaths.' For a long time medics have been regarded as 'unsung heroes' on the battlefield; to that short list can now be added chaplains. This superbly written work will do much to open peoples' eyes to these often-overlooked brave and selfless men." —Flint Whitlock, author and editor of WWII Quarterly magazine“Wukovits’s book is a harrowing account of men and women who strove to remain spiritual leaders as the world appeared dead-set in destroying itself.” —American Catholic Studies"Wukovits, a prolific author and historian of the Second World War, is also a second-generation Notre Dame graduate, and in this engaging work, he tells the stories of nearly three dozen chaplains (having deep connections to South Bend themselves) who left Indiana to serve on foreign fields. . . . Thoroughly researched, clearly written, and often emotionally moving, Soldiers of a Different Cloth will be a must read for professional and 'lay' historians of war, religion, and the intersection thereof." —H-WarTable of ContentsFOREWORD PREFACE CHRONOLOGY Part 1. Dreux brings the history of World War II to life with stories of real people amidst a small section of the fighting in France.Trade Review“I recommend No Bridges Blown as a book that ought to be a classic of wartime literature. I recommend it to anyone who wants to understand the personal implications of war, the stress of life in occupied territory, some of the roots of American special operations forces, or just wants a fascinating and beautifully written explanation of a tiny piece of the fight in France.” —Russell Worth Parker, Lieutenant Colonel, US Marine Corps"A readable and interesting reconstruction of the past!" —Library Journal“William Dreux’s account of his time with the Office of Strategic Services' (OSS) elite Jedburgh teams is the rare war story offering a glimpse into the vital work that took place behind the lines of battle. No Bridges Blown is a compelling, illuminating memoir of his time working with the French Resistance, a valuable companion to tales of combat.” —Gregory A. Freeman, author of The Forgotten 500“No Bridges Blown is one of the most authentic accounts of life behind-the-lines in Occupied France that I've ever read.” —Colin Beavan, author of Operation Jedburgh"Quietly written yet intensely interesting." —Publishers Weekly“The men and women of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) were some of the most dynamic and pioneering in American history. Jedburgh captain William Dreux's compelling prose captures not only the gristle but also the meat of these important contributions in his World War II memoir No Bridges Blown. What's old is new—the tenets and principles developed by the OSS continue to ring true in today's conflicts.” —Patrick K. Book SynopsisHow should Germany commemorate the mass murder of Jews once committed in its name? James E. Young - the only foreigner and Jew to serve on the German commission to select a design for a national Holocaust memorial - tells the inside story of this controversial project.Trade Review"The brilliance of James Young's theoretical insights is matched by his outstanding knowledge of the vast array of representations of the Shoah and by his artistic and literary sensitivity. At Memory's Edge will become an influential book." Saul Friedlander "Young's book needs no extra boost, and yet this recent debate over the meaning of German nationalism gives his subject another dimension of topicality, proving again how accurately discussions of art can pinpoint all that's buried just beneath the surface of everyday life." Robert Leiter, New York Times Book Review "A beautifully written and illustrated book that tells us something profound about the featured artistic projects and their contexts." Natasha Lehrer, Jewish Quarterly "This book provides for further study of the nature and meanings of memory, and on the way contemporary artists contribute to the broad and growing discussion of what memory is."
