Book SynopsisThis book introduces an English-speaking public to the life of Madeleine Riffaud â one of the last living leaders of the French Resistance. It considers the nature of the rebel hero in Franceâs founding historical narratives (revolution, insurrection, resistance) while asking what contributions such a hero might make to debates on national identity today. Through a series of narrative close-ups, the book offers perspectives on major chapters in nineteenth- and twentieth-century French history through the eyes of activists who experienced them: the Revolution of July 1830 and the 1851 insurrection against Napoleon, as experienced by Riffaudâs ancestor Edme Liron, and the French Resistance, the Vietnam War and FrenchâAlgerian conflict as experienced by Riffaud herself. The book aims to explore the kinds of choices individuals face when their beliefs set them at odds with the state, and to suggest that there is a place for individual action in a global arena where state boundaries are becoming increasingly less relevant.Trade Review"In this book I found the Madeleine I know so well: dynamic, acerbic and as rebellious as ever. Chiaroni presents an unvarnished portrait of Madeleine Riffaud. As well as being an anti colonialist, poet, résistante, and war correspondent, Riffaud is also a thoroughly contemporary rebel who could be considered exemplary by all who seek to fight against injustice and inequality - these are our real enemies in a conflicted world."Philippe Rostan Filmmaker and Director, award winning director of Les Trois Guerres de Madeleine Riffaud (2010)"This work has entirely achieved its objective. It offers readers a biography without descending into hagiography, and succeeds in making the links between one individual’s story and the greater story of history. It is also a pleasure to read."Olivier Wieviorka, scholar of Second World War History and professor of history at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan, author of : Histoire de la Résistance: 1940-1945, Perrin, 2013 (prix François-Joseph Audifred de l’Académie des Sciences Morales et politiques, novembre 2013, prix Eugène Colas de l’Académie française, juin 2014)Table of ContentsIntroduction: portrait of a rebel Dramatis personae Defining features: Riffaud and the Résistance Vietnam: a love story Algeria and France: a crime passionnel Poetry as a weapon of war: 'L'arme pour l'homme désarmé' Edme Liron: the ancestral portrait The portrait revisited: Rainer or Riffaud? Book SynopsisAn American fighter pilot doomed to die in Buchenwald but determined to survive. On August 13, 1944, Joe Moser set off on his forty-fourth combat mission over occupied France. Soon, he would join almost 170 other Allied airmen as prisoners in Buchenwald, one of the most notorious and deadly of Nazi concentration camps. Tom Clavin''s Lightning Down tells this largely untold and riveting true story.Moser was just twenty-two years old, a farm boy from Washington State who fell in love with flying. During the War he realized his dream of piloting a P-38 Lightning, one of the most effective weapons the Army Air Corps had against the powerful German Luftwaffe. But on that hot August morning he had to bail out of his damaged, burning plane. Captured immediately, Moser's journey into hell began.Moser and his courageous comrades from England, Canada, New Zealand, and elsewhere endured the most horrific conditions during their imprisonment... until the day the orders were issued by Hitler himself to execute them. Only a most desperate plan would save them. The page-turning momentum of Lightning Down is like that of a thriller, but the stories of imprisoned and brutalized airmen are true and told in unforgettable detail, led by the distinctly American voice of Joe Moser, who prays every day to be reunited with his family.Lightning Down is a can't-put-it-down inspiring saga of brave men confronting great evil and great odds against survival.

Book SynopsisThe extraordinary story of the Nazi-era scientific genius who discovered how cancer cells eat—and what it means for how we should.Trade Review"While millions of other Europeans with Jewish heritage were being rounded up and sent to their deaths, Otto Warburg enjoyed Nazi protection and a comfortable life in Berlin. Sam Apple, author of a new book, Ravenous, explores his remarkable tale of survival." -- BBC History Revealed"The research that Warburg is best known for today, and the work that forms the backbone of Ravenous, is his discovery that cancer cells behave differently from healthy cells in two very specific ways: They consume massive amounts of glucose — Apple compares them to ravenous shipwrecked sailors — and they eschew aerobic respiration in favor of fermentation... Apple covers everything from Hitler’s obsessive preoccupation with cancer to how the German Empire’s transformation into an industrial powerhouse led to a Romanticism-fueled movement that emphasized both environmental and racial purity. The fact that Apple can make these stories... feel so immediate is a testament to his canny knack for choosing apposite details." -- Seth Mnookin - The New York Times"Ravenous tells the story of an extraordinary life, and of the visionary work that sustained it... Apple has a gift for elegant analogies and illuminating similes… [An] exceptionally interesting and well-written book..." -- Thomas Morris - Times Literary Supplement"Eye-opening... filled with... outrageous and entertaining stories... I walked away from Ravenous thinking of Otto Warburg as a sort of Sigmund Freud of cancer research." -- Sam Kean - The Wall Street Journal

  • Family Punishment in Nazi Germany

Palgrave Macmillan Family Punishment in Nazi Germany

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the Third Reich, political dissidents were not the only ones liable to be punished for their crimes. Their parents, siblings and relatives also risked reprisals. This concept - known as Sippenhaft - was based in ideas of blood and purity. This definitive study surveys the threats, fears and infliction of this part of the Nazi system of terror.Trade Review"This book aims to show the contribution that Sippenhaft or family liability punishment made to the Nazi system of terror. Loeffel argues convincingly that part of the effectiveness of the punishment was its lack of codification. Overall, this book contributes much to our understanding of state power and terror in the Third Reich. Loeffel ably demonstrates how, at all levels, the punishment of Sippenhaft was used 'to instill fear and maintain compliance among German citizens'." - Lisa Pine, London South Bank University, German History "This new and original study goes a very long way to clarifying just what Sippenhaft in Nazi Germany was and how it was applied. It makes it clear that there was much more to the practice of Sippenhaft in Nazi Germany than the arrest of the family members of the conspirators involved in the 20 July 1944 plot on Hitler's life. Overall, this is an impressive piece of work which opens the way for comparative studies of Sippenhaft in other regimes." - Australian Journal of Politics and History "Punishment of family members, with its emphasis on blood, was ideologically appealing to the regime and terrifying to any family man. This excellent and impressively supported book . . . ties Nazi family punishment to the "consent-coercion" debate, which reveals that the balance between dictatorial control and public enthusiasm tips increasingly toward the public. Recommended." Professor Arnold Krammer, Texas A&M University, Choice "Robert Loeffel's new book examines the Nazi use of Sippenhaft, or family punishment, as a lens through which to view the broader implementation of terror in German society . . . Loeffel's book draws attention to an understudied area and contributes to ongoing historiographical debates about Nazi efforts to control German society and the military during World War Two." - Michelle Mouton, University of Wisconsin, American Historical Review "Loeffel has struggled mightily with the tendency of his evidentiary problems to produce a compilation of individual cases rather than a historical analysis. He has been extraordinarily assiduous in collecting evidence about families, especially from surviving members. He is consistently careful not to overgeneralize from possibly idiosyncratic cases, and to offer alternative explanations for the seemingly arbitrary uses of Sippenhaft." - European History QuarterlyTable of ContentsIntroduction: Sippenhaft, Terror and Fear: The Historiography of the Nazi Terror State The Consent and Coercion Debate Method of Transmission Importance of Rumour in Nazi Germany Outline of this Book A Word on Sources Conclusion PART I: SIPPENHAFT AND GERMAN SOCIETY, 1933-1945 Sippenhaft and the Rise to Power Sippenhaft and Resistance during Second World War The German Home Front after Stalingrad Conclusion PART II: 'IMPRISONMENT OF RELATIVES, LIFE OR LIBERTY' SIPPENHAFT AND THE WEHRMACHT The Foundation of Sippenhaft in the Wehrmacht Sippenhaft and the Wehrmacht, 1939-1944 Sippenhaft against Volksdeutche Germans Sippenhaft after the 20 July 1944 Codification of Terror Conclusion PART III: SIPPENHAFT AND THE NKFD AND THE BDO Background The German Reaction Cherkassy Effect of 20 July 1944 181 The Limits of Sippenhaft Sippenhaft and the Political Significance of the NKFD and BDO Conclusion PART IV: 'IF A MAN IN THIS REICH IS UNTRUE, THEN HE AND HIS FAMILY WILL BE PUNISHED' Sippenhaft and the 20 July 1944 Establishing Sippenhaft and 20 July 1944 Sippenhaft put into Effect Continuing Rhetoric, Fear, Expansion and Limitations of Sippenhaft The Fate of the von Stauffenberg Family The Transformation of Sippenhaft and the 20 July 1944 Challenging Terror: Interventions, Representations and Release Confusion and Fear Those that Remained in Sippenhaft Detention Conclusion PART V: SIPPENHAFT KINDERHEIM: THE CHILDREN IN BAD SACHSA The Sippenhaft Prisoners of Bad Sachsa Life in the Camp: Determining Intention A Change of Plan Conclusion Bibliography

Book SynopsisIn Northern Ireland, The United States and the Second World War, Simon Topping analyses the American military presence in Northern Ireland during the war, examining the role of the government at Stormont in managing this friendly invasion', the diplomatic and military rationales for the deployment, the attitude of Americans to their posting, and the effect of the US presence on local sectarian dynamics. He explores US military planning, the hospitality and entertainment provided for American troops, the renewal and reimagining of historic links between Ulster and the United States, the importation of Jim Crow' racism, Johnny Doughboys' marrying Irish Roses', and how all of this impacted upon internal, transatlantic and cross-border politics. This study also draws attention to influential and understudied individuals such as Northern Ireland's Prime Minister Sir Basil Brooke and offers a reassessment of David Gray, America's minister to Dublin. There are many interesting and original angles. It contains a good combination of general analysis and narrative and particular stories and illustrative material. It will appeal to a wide range of readers. Among books on NI during the war this is easily one of the best. * Geoffrey Roberts, Emeritus Professor of History, Member of the Royal Irish Academy, University College Cork, Ireland *I think this is the most important book on US forces in Northern Ireland during the war. This is the most extensively researched, fully explained, and well analyzed study of the subject yet produced. This is a brilliant book that tells the almost unknown story of US forces in Northern Ireland in World War II. I learned something new on almost every page. * Francis M. Book SynopsisEnglandspiel Nordpol, or Operation North Pole, was a successful Second World War counterintelligence operation conducted by Germany''s military intelligence (the Abwehr) between 1942 and 1944.On the night of 6-7 November 1941 two SOE agents, Huub Lauwers and Thys Taconis were parachuted into the Netherlands and dropped over Stegerveld, near Ommen. Lauwers was captured on 6 March 1942, whilst Taconis was captured 3 days later on 9 March. Lauwers was persuaded to send messages back to London by the Germans, in which he intentionally left out two security checks. This should have automatically sounded ''alarm bells'' with those who received the messages, but for some inexplicable reason, it did not. Whether this was just a genuine mistake or something more sinister has never been fully ascertained. After all, security checks were in place to ensure that messages received from agents in the field were genuine and were part of the SOE''s own transmission protocol. As no one in London real

PMH Bell's famous book is a comprehensive study of the period and debates surrounding the European origins of the Second World War. He approaches the subject from three different angles: describing the various explanations that have been offered for the war and the historiographical debates that have arisen from them, analysing the ideological, economic and strategic forces at work in Europe during the 1930s, and tracing the course of events from peace in 1932, via the initial outbreak of hostilities in 1939, through to the climactic German attack on the Soviet Union in 1941 which marked the descent into general conflict. Written in a lucid, accessible style, this is an indispensable guide to the complex origins of the Second World War.

Book SynopsisThroughout the Second World War, a wide range of people, including political leaders and government officials, experts and armchair internationalists, civil society groups and private citizens talked about and formulated plans to ensure national security and to promote individual well-being in the postwar world. Rebuilding the Postwar Order explains how civil society and governments of the wartime allies conceived of peace and traces the international negotiations and conferences that later resulted in the United Nations system. It adopts a multilateral approach, connects wartime ideas to earlier peacemaking efforts, and reveals support for, as well as resistance and alternatives to, the emerging postwar order. In chapters on the United Nations, UNRRA, the IMF, World Bank and GATT, the FAO and WHO, UNESCO, and human rights, McKenzie explores the tensions between national sovereignty and international responsibility, national security and individual well-being, principlesTrade Review“This impressive book draws on vast reading and research in international history to demonstrate how different conceptions of peace played a decisive role in the emergence of the United Nations and the post-WWII international order. Its multilateral approach provides readers with a truly comprehensive analysis of one of the seminal international developments of the twentieth century.” * Dan Gorman, Professor of History and Department Chair, University of Waterloo, Canada *"More than ever, we need new histories that return us to a critical moment in the invention of the existing international order. Francine McKenzie's meticulous and rich study of the origins of the UN system restores the broad ambitions of the mid-20th century, reminding us of the importance of international institutions, as they were once conceived. There once was a time when the imperative of peace took prime place in international politics- this book brings that time alive for a new generation faced with the multiple challenges of an order newly in diasarray." * Glenda Sluga, Professor of International History, European University Institute, Italy *Table of ContentsList of Figures Acknowledgements List of Abbreviations Introduction: Winning the War and Winning the Peace 1. Book SynopsisAxis Midget Submarines details the history, weapons, and operations of German, Japanese, and Italian midget submarines during World War II. Over this period, Germany, Japan, and Italy built approximately 2,000 small, inherently stealthy, naval craft to perform special operations and conventional navy missions. Much more numerous and more technically advanced than their Allied counterparts, they saw service worldwide, operating in the Pacific, Mediterranean, Black Sea, Indian Ocean, North Sea, and the English Channel. Manned by courageous crews, these vessels made daring attacks on Allied ships in heavily protected anchorages using torpedoes and mines. Most notable were attacks against Gibraltar - launched from an Italian cargo vessel interred in nearby neutral Spain that had been converted into a clandestine support base and equipped with an underwater hatch - and Pearl Harbor. They were used against shipping in coastal waters and, near the end of the war, in desperate attempts to oTable of ContentsIntroduction/ The midget submarine in naval history/ Italy/ Japan/ Germany/ Analysis and Conclusion

Book SynopsisAs the Allies attempted to break out of Normandy, it quickly became apparent that there would be no easy victory over the Germans, and that every scrap of territory on the way to Berlin would have to be earned through hard fighting. This study concentrates on the ferocious battles between the German Panzer IV and US Sherman that were at the heart of this decisive phase of World War II. The two types were among the most-produced tanks in US and German service and were old enemies - having clashed repeatedly in the Mediterranean theater. Throughout their long service careers, both had seen a succession of technical developments and modifications, as well as an evolution in their intended roles - but both remained at the forefront of the fighting on the Western Front. Written by an expert on armoured warfare, this book invites the reader into the cramped confines of these armoured workhorses, employing vivid technical illustrations alongside archive and contemporary photography to depict Table of ContentsIntroduction /Chronology /Design and Development /Technical Specifications /The Combatants /The Strategic Situation /Combat /Statistics and Analysis /Conclusion /Further Reading /Index

On the one side were the invading Soviet troops, hoping to liberate an area full of rich resources and littered with bases that that would enable the arrival of Arctic convoys from Britain. They employed naval infantry in abundance, not only to make amphibious landings to capture strategically significant port facilities, but also on deep outflanking manoeuvres inland. Their opponents were the elite Gebirgsjäger from XIX Gebirgskorps; trained to be self-sufficient and resourceful and equipped with a range of bespoke weaponry, this mountain division was ideally suited to operate in the harsh climate. Out of stock

Book SynopsisDuring the struggle for the Mediterranean in World War II, British and Italian battleships entered combat on three occasions in 1940 and 1941. In this fully illustrated account of these battles, historian Mark Stille assesses the technology, crews, doctrine, and combat record of the capital ships that took part. During World War II''s battle for control of the Mediterranean, both the British and Italian navies planned to bring their battle fleets into play. At the center of both of these fleets was a core of battleships which both sides expected to play a decisive role in the conflict. On July 9, 1940, the two navies met in the central Mediterranean, as two Italian battleships faced off against three of their British counterparts. Christened the Battle of Calabria, the action allowed the ships to play to their strengths, engaging in a long-range gunnery duel, the very thing they had been designed for. Book SynopsisThis study explores, in detail, the gripping tale of a handful of British X-Craft submarines which stole into one of the best-protected anchorages of World War II and crippled the great German battleship Tirpitz. In September 1943, under the cover of darkness, six British midget submarines crept into the heart of enemy territory, penetrating a heavily guarded Norwegian fjord in an attempt to eliminate the threat of the powerful German battleship, the Tirpitz. Numerous previous attempts to attack the ship from both air and sea had failed, and this mission was carefully strategized and undertaken by skilled operatives who had undergone extensive training in an isolated sea loch. Though five of the six X-Craft submarines were either lost or captured, two crews had just enough time to lay their explosive charges, which detonated after they were forced to the surface, putting the Tirpitz out of action for a crucial six-month period. Book SynopsisA new illustrated history and analysis of Italy''s World War II destroyers, a formidable foe for Allied forces attempting to attack the sea lanes between Italy and North Africa. The Italian Royal Navy (Regia Marine or RM) began the Second World War with one of the largest fleets in the world. Included in it was a total of 59 fleet destroyers, with others added during the war. These were a diverse collection of ships dating back to the First World War with large destroyers built to counter ships of similar size introduced in the French Navy (the RM''s historical enemy), and medium-sized ships which constituted the bulk of the destroyer force. RM destroyers were built for high speed, not endurance since they were only expected to operate inside the Mediterranean. They were also well-armed, but lacked radar.During the war, RM destroyers fought well. In October 1944, the US prepared to invade the Philippines to cut Japan off from its resource areas in Southeast Asia. The Japanese correctly predicted this, and prepared a complex operation to use the remaining strength of its navy to defend its possessions. In the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the Imperial Japanese Navy's First Diversion Strike Force took part in two major actions during the course of the battle: the intense air attacks from US Navy carriers on October 24 (the Battle of the Sibuyan Sea, which accounted for superbattleship Musashi), and the compelling action off Samar the following day. This book examines in detail why, following the Samar action, the Imperial Japanese Navy commander of the First Diversion Strike Force (Takeo Kurita) chose to ignore orders and break off the attack into Leyte Gulfone of the two most controversial decisions of thTrade ReviewPlenty of archive photos as ever throughout the book, along with some fine artwork as we'd expect and some very good colour diagrams showing the two sides/individual ships and the courses they took during the different encounters. Book SynopsisAn illustrated examination of the role played by the Sunderland as an antisubmarine aircraft during the Battle of the Atlantic, focusing on the key battles of the Biscay campaign in 194344.The Sunderland is an iconic British aircraft of World War II, and the only RAF Coastal Command type to perform frontline service throughout the conflict. Its prime target the German U-boat was a deadly adversary to Allied warships and other oceangoing vessels, but proved vulnerable to detection and air attacks from the radar-equipped Sunderland. This book examines the respective advantages and drawbacks of these two maritime predators by providing a vivid analysis of their historic engagement during the Biscay campaign in 194344.Drawing upon first-hand accounts of this famous duel, Mark Lardas tells the story of how highly skilled Sunderland crews took the fight to an often elusive enemy and helped RAF Coastal Command defeat the U-boat threat. The combat record of the Zero-sen in New Guinea has mostly been overstated, with little due being given to the constraining conditions under which the fighter operated. The air combats fought over New Guinea in 1942 between Imperial Japanese Naval Air Force (IJNAF) pilots and their Allied counterparts in P-39 Airacobras and P-40 Warhawks were often trial and error' affairs, with both belligerents being caught out by weather. This study covers the key role played by governing factors including geography and climatic conditions, and examines the modified tactics employed by IJNAF Zero-sen pilots to help them cope in-theatre through the comprehensive analysis of RAAF, USAAF and Japanese operational after action reports.
