Book SynopsisAdventure, memoir, storytelling and celebration of all things maritime meet in Waypoints, a beautifully written account of sea journeys from Scotland's west coast. In the book Ian Stephen reveals a lifetime's love affair with sailing; each voyage honours a seagoing vessel, and each adventure is accompanied by a spell-binding retelling of a traditional tale about the sea. His writing is enchanting and lyrical, gentle but searching, and is accompanied by beautiful illustrations of each vessel, drawn by his wife, artist Christine Morrison.Ian Stephen is a Scottish writer, artist and storyteller from the remote and bewitching Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. He fell in love with boats and sailing as a boy, pairing this love affair with a passion for the beautiful but merciless Scottish coastline, an inspiration and motivating force behind his poems, stories, plays, radio broadcasts and visual arts projects for many years. This book will be a delightful and absorbing read for anyoTrade ReviewA really beautiful book ... movingly and saltily real * Adam Nicolson *Charming and engaging. Beautifully written, this is a book you'll find it hard to put down. * Lifeboat magazine (RNLI) *Former Isle of Lewis coastguard Ian Stephen has created a lyrical and gentle commentary on the nautical past and present. * Sailing Today *It is a dazzling book in that somehow, magically, you bring your experience as a sailor, wed to this the exquisite craftsmanship of those who make the boats, and then produce these exquisite thoughts on the art of storytelling as if all three are inextricable. Fernhurst Books Limited Racundra's Third Cruise

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisMost people know of Arthur Ransome, the author of the classic children’s sailing tale, Swallows & Amazons, and many other books in the same series. But besides his exciting tales of children on the water there is much more to the man. Before he wrote Swallows & Amazons, Ransome was a journalist for the Daily News, based in Russia. He is reputed to have played chess against Lenin and he married Trotsky’s secretary. He cruised extensively in the Baltic in the 1920s on board his beloved Racundra. His account of his first cruise on that boat was his first commercially successful book, Racundra’s First Cruise (also available from Fernhurst Books). The second cruise was spoilt by bad weather, but the third cruise was special – it was his honeymoon having married Evgenia Shelepina. Ransome clearly intended to publish the account of this cruise, but never finished it. Ransome enthusiast, Brian Hammett, got hold of the unpublished manuscript and found Ransome’s hand-written notes, diaries, logbooks and photographs in the Ransome archive at Leeds University. Brian compiled this book, adding his own notes from his cruises in the same area. The result is a glorious volume which has delighted Ransome enthusiasts, sailors and landlubbers equally. This new paperback edition and eBook will be published on 8th May – the very day that Ransome and Shelepina got married in 1924 before their honeymoon cruise which is recounted in this book.Trade Review“There isn’t a paragraph in it that is not a delight to read… Few books have been edited with more enthusiasm and dedication… This is a labour of love for which Ransome’s many admirers have reason to be enormously grateful.” (The Independent) “His easy descriptive prose is as fresh as it ever was.” (Classic Boat) “The day-to-day details of the cruise will be music to the ears of sailing enthusiasts, but the keen eye of Ransome the journalist ensures there is plenty to hold the attention of those of us who don’t know the difference between a centreboard and a centre-forward.” (The Keswick Reminder) “A superbly well-written book which is worth reading at a suitably leisurely pace and savouring every exquisite minute.” (Lifeboat) “For the general cruising fraternity, this slim paperback is highly recommended as the kind of book to have on board in case of enforced idleness in a sheltered anchorage while waiting for inclement weather to pass. Although it describes a world long gone, it nails much that is important, enjoyable and interesting about the cruising life.” (Flying Fish, 2018)Table of ContentsIntroduction; Racundra’s Third Cruise (Racundra Goes Inland); Prelude to Racundra’s Third Cruise: The dream, The first cruise, The second cruise, The Cruising Association, Getting married, Racundra returns to Riga; Postscript; Acknowledgements.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisCollisions are expensive! Learning, understanding and remembering the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) is essential for anyone venturing onto the water. Leisure boaters, as much as professional mariners, need to know the rules, and a firm understanding is required to pass many nautical exams. But with the COLREGs stretching to over 12,000 words, this is no small task. This is where Paul Boissier’s excellent book comes in. Paul knows the COLREGs backwards having used them extensively in his career with the Royal Navy – from the bridges of submarines and warships which he has commanded, with each giving a rather different perspective on other shipping! He also knows the other side well with his extensive cruising experience, from his early years with his father to now, sailing his own yacht. These experiences mean that he knows and understands the COLREGs from both sides and this gives him the ability to take you through the COLREGs from a mariners’ and sailors’ perspective. He brings the vital, but dry, document to life, going through it not in order, but by topics which are relevant to the mariner and sailor. Paul explains the intention of each rule and how it should be applied when at sea. He includes personal anecdotes (not all favourable to him!) which make everything real and tells us how he remembers different aspects of the Regulations through mnemonics and other devices. Finally, each chapter ends with a self-test to reinforce what has been learnt – other tests are also available online on the Fernhurst Books’ website. This new edition has been updated with the 2016 changes to the CLOREGS. Whether you want to increase your confidence, pass an exam, require an on-board reference, or wish to improve your understanding of the nautical rules of the road, this is the ideal book for you.Trade Review“Boissier writes with intellect, wit and realism, effortlessly educating the reader to understand the spirit as well as the letter of the law. His tips and anecdotes, gleaned from experience, make this an excellent guide to an essential subject.” (Yachting Monthly) “Anecdotes and detailed explanations throughout this book make the nautical rules very clear, as do the well-conceived diagrams. A timely, readable and absolutely essential guide.” (Julian Stockwin) “...one of the most easy-to-read rule books out there.” (Boat Mart)Table of ContentsForeword; 1 Introduction; 2 Context of the rules: Rules 1-7; 3 How to recognise other vessels by their lights and shapes: Rules 20-31 and 36; 4 Sound signals: Rules 32-35; 5 The manoeuvring rules: Rules 8, 11-19; 6 Narrow channels and fairways, and separation schemes: Rules 9-10; 7 Some examples of collision avoidance; 8 Particular issues for yachts and small boats; 9 Buoyage; 10 Distress signals: Annex IV; 11 International marine VHF channels as used in the UK.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWhile relatively few cruise single-handed, many sail short-handed. It may be a couple sailing together or indeed a skipper with a novice crew - he may have lots of people onboard but, in terms of the sailing, he is probably short-handed. They soon discover that there is so much more to short-handed sailing than a lack of crew. It demands a different approach, a new mindset. The skipper has a much greater workload but there are also fewer people, sometimes no-one at all, to consult during the decision-making process. Under these circumstances fatigue can be as dangerous as heavy weather: it creeps up on you, often unnoticed, destroying your morale and ability to make rational decisions. And when short-handed, the crew's limited physical resources must be watched over and zealously guarded. In this heavily illustrated book Alastair Buchan passes on the lessons of his hard-won experience gained short- and single-handed sailing in coastal, offshore and ocean waters. It will show you everything you need to know about handling a boat alone or short-handed, from choosing a suitable craft to passage planning, manoeuvring, sleep management and watch keeping.Trade Review"covers the basics from coming alongside... casting off, to sail handling routines and... tricky situations - like going aloft - with diagrams." Book SynopsisThe second edition of the Sunday Times Sports Book of the Year is updated with a new chapter describing Nick's eventual completion of the Fastnet Race thirty years after his first, ill-fated attempt. The world-famous Fastnet Race takes yachts from the Isle of Wight to the Fastnet Rock off the southwest coast of Ireland and back. The 1979 race began in perfect conditions, but was soon engulfed by the deadliest storm in the history of modern sailing. By the time it passed, the havoc caused was immeasurable, and fifteen sailors had lost their lives. It had been Nick Ward's childhood ambition to sail in the Fastnet Race, and being asked to join the crew of the 30-foot yacht Grimalkin was a dream come true. But then the storm hit. Grimalkin was capsized again and again. With the skipper lost overboard, after hours of struggle three of the crew decided to abandon the boat for the liferaft. Nick and another crewmember, both unconscious, were left on the beleaguered yacht in the middle of Trade Review'Nick has told the story of his amazing survival in his book Left for Dead, which he has re-released to include a new chapter about his epic challenge 30 years later.' * The Irish Sun (July 2010) *'Unsettling but compelling reading. Book SynopsisLin and Larry Pardeys hugely popular and encouraging book, the Self Sufficient Sailor, has been revitalised and expanded by over 40%. This has been an exciting project for me, said Lin, especially as I have spent much of the past two years voyaging through the western Pacific on a boat that has not only an engine, but much of the electronic gear Larry and I chose to sail without. This let me evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of what many folks call modern equipment. Better yet, it put me in touch with the people who are out cruising right now. And it is exciting to see that there are young and young at heart folks setting off voyaging on limited budgets and finding fine adventures.

Book SynopsisIn an old wooden sloop, Philip Marsden plots a course north from his home in Cornwall. He is sailing for the Summer Isles, a small archipelago near the top of Scotland that holds for him a deep and personal significance. On the way, he must navigate the west coast of Ireland and the Inner Hebrides. Through the people he meets and the tales he uncovers, Marsden builds up a haunting picture of these shores - of imaginary islands and the Celtic otherworld, of the ageless draw of the west, of the life of the sea and perennial loss - and the redemptive power of the imagination. The Summer Isles is an unforgettable account of the search for actual places, invented places, and those places in between that shape the lives of individuals and entire nations.Trade ReviewA truly remarkable writer -- Robert MacfarlaneMagical * Guardian *[Marsden] writes beautifully... In these islands at the edge of the Atlantic, he finds a rich tradition of myth, poetry and ancient lore that still speaks to us across the gulf of time * Guardian *I loved The Summer Isles from page one... Like one of those doorways so popular in Irish myth [it is] a portal not just to other places but to other times... marvellous -- Michael Kerr * Telegraph *A triumph... It is unlikely that a finer travel book will be published all year -- Hugh Thompson * Literary Review *Marsden brings characteristic elegance and insatiable curiosity to bear on his voyage; we are whisked along as passengers, alternately enchanted by this unforgettable coastline and apprehensive of its treachery. Even the most dogged land lubber cannot fail to be exhilarated by these stiff salt breezes -- Madeleine BuntingThe best book I've read on a sailing trip since Jonathan Raban's Coasting * Irish Independent *One of the most brilliant, imaginative and alluring travel books I have read in a long time -- William Dalrymple ‘Books of the Year’ * Wall Street Journal *By turns exhilarating and hauntingly poetic, this is a memorable book, full of reflection and wonder. Long after I'd finished reading it, part of me was still aboard Tsambika, peering into the distance, making out half-shapes, strange sea creatures, mythical kingdoms and snatches of ancient folk songs caught on the breeze... Sublime * Mail on Sunday *Beautifully written... As nail-biting as Conrad... Wonderful... Marsden is a subtle and elliptical writer. He never overstates and he is always doing more than it looks at first glance. So at the same time that this is both history and adventure, it is also a journey inward... [A book of] imaginative brilliance and precision... Marsden, more than anyone, understands that imagination, in its ability to conjure islands, is a solid thing * Elementum Journal *There is no better guide to the deep and dazzling meanings found on the western fringe of Europe than Philip Marsden -- Patrick BarkhamReading Philip Marsden's voyage is the only time in my life I shall want to be lost at sea. Shimmering, profound, and deeply mesmerizing -- John Lewis-StempelBattling unforgiving weather and repairing his boat on the fly, he shares the myths, legends and songs surrounding these mystery-shrouded islands * Wanderlust *Thrillingly alive * National Geographic Traveller *Philip Marsden [is] one of Britain's great sea writers... a truly beautiful voyage through people and poetry as well as the sea * Marine Quarterly *

  • Sailing Alone

    Penguin Books Ltd Sailing Alone

Book Synopsis''An exceptional book. Sailing Alone belongs on the very small shelf of the true classics of the sea'' Peter Nichols, author of Sea Change and A Voyage for Madmen''Colourful and inventive'' The TimesSailing on a boat by yourself out at sea and out of sight of land can be exhilarating or terrifying, compelling or tedious - sometimes it can be all of these things just in one morning. It is an adventure at odds with our normal, sociable lives, carried out floating on a medium wholly inimical to our existence. But the deep ocean is also a remarkable place on which to think.Richard King''s enormously engaging and curious new book is about the debt we owe to solo sailors: women and men, young and old, who have set out alone. Spending weeks and months alone, slowly, quietly and close to the ocean surface is to create the world''s largest laboratory: an endlessly changing, capricious and startling place in which to observe oneself, Trade ReviewAn engaging, beautifully written history of single-handed sailing ... Packed with ripping yarns and driven characters. * The Economist *Those who have chosen to face the dangers of the ocean alone are a colourful and inventive bunch ... I was delighted to read of [King's] amazement. -- David Mills * The Times *The book is as much a feat as the crossing ... something to be marvelled at ... I’ve already started plotting my own ocean crossing. -- Peter Hoskin * Prospect *First-hand accounts evoke the elation, frustrations and dangers of life in a small boat crossing the ocean ... King assembles a truly eccentric, even flamboyant cast of solo sailors. -- Victor Mallet * Financial Times *Richard King is a superb and gifted writer, and Sailing Alone is an exceptional book. Into his account of his own singlehanded ocean crossing, he has woven a rare and compelling history of the real explorers, the extraordinary 'ordinary' people-men, women, and even children-who took off alone, in tiny, often crude boats, and found what we are all searching for. Here is the real story of what it's like to be alone at sea. A real achievement that will provide inexhaustible re-reading, Sailing Alone belongs on the very small shelf of the true classics of the sea. -- Peter Nichols, author of Sea Change and A Voyage for MadmenSailing Alone is a beacon, a lighthouse of luminance for the experienced and inexperienced alike. Richard King's insightful reflections on the stories of lone voyagers make this required reading for all who dream fervently of such voyages. A nuanced study in aspiration, endurance, terror, and triumph, it's a treasure. -- Jon Wilson, Founder, WoodenBoatPraise for Richard J. King's Ahab's Rolling Sea: A Natural History of Moby-Dick: 'Anyone who loves Moby-Dick should read this book' -- Nathaniel Philbrick, author of In the Heart of the SeaA superb work of popular scholarship that rivals the best books of maritime non-fiction currently in print ... a joy to read. -- Dan Brayton, author of Shakespeare’s OceanA wide-ranging, highly personal, richly eclectic, and extremely well-researched book whose style and humour, combined with its rigor, suggest the potential for popularity beyond the fascinations of this self-confessed whalehead ... A contemporary, witty, almost postmodern field guide. -- Philip Hoare, author of The WhaleA marvellous guide to the magic and mystery that was Melville's gift to us. -- Carl Safina, author of Song for the Blue Ocean and Becoming WildBrilliantly written, I have been drawn back to Sailing Alone again and again; each new reading brings a different perspective, and has also introduced me to remarkable sailors I really should have known about. * Practical Boat Owner *King has an academic's research skills and a deep appreciation of the link between solo sailing and writing. He has also had the ocean-time to develop questions that could never have been formulated from a library ... An important, stimulating book. * Yachting Monthly *
