Fernhurst Books Limited Logbook for GPS Navigation: Compact, for Small

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisMost yachts and motor boats now use GPS as their primary source of positional information when navigating. The page layout of this logbook has been designed for clear entry of GPS positions and waypoints. The left-hand spread is for passage planning and the right-hand spread is for plotting positions on passage. There is also space to include narrative and separate pages for pilotage, harbour, anchorage and other notes, plus a section to use as a visitors’ book and / or to record crew changes. The size of the book makes it ideal for use on small chart tables, without completely covering the chart that also needs to be referred to. This second edition reintroduces the silver blocking on the front cover, giving the Logbook a stylish feel and making it the ideal place in which to record those precious journeys undertaken in your yacht.Trade Review“This hardcover logbook was specially devised by Anderson with GPS navigation in mind; hence its compact size and suitability for small chart tables.” (Sailing Magazine)Table of ContentsCompiling the log; Log pages; Pilotage, harbour, anchorage & other notes; Visitors' book

Book SynopsisSailing is far more fun if you understand what is going on aboard and can give a hand. And if the weather turns nasty, or things go wrong (which is very rare), then an extra hand can be invaluable. This compact companion contains all the essential information that a new crew needs before stepping aboard: what clothes to bring, what the things on the deck are called, how to start helping with the sails and other deckwork. There is also an important section on safety and one on living aboard – because ‘boat living’ is not at all like living ashore. Ideal for a skipper to give out to new crew, or for a new crew to buy for themselves, to ensure that they know what to expect and get the most out of their first sailing experiences.Trade Review“It's small, concise and surprisingly good at packing useful information into a tiny space.” (Yachting Monthly) “It would make a great welcome-on-board gift for skippers to give to new crew. It teaches them terminology and skills, but also takes a no-nonsense approach to extremely important matters - like crew asking if a skipper would like them to contribute to the boat's kitty. Very handy for nautical novices.” (Sailing Today) “These slimline, flip-over 'learn-to-sail' type books are priceless in my view; and this second edition of 'New Crew's Companion' tops the bargain list once more... all the essentials are there for the new crew to make their lives easier aboard.” (Sailing Magazine)Table of ContentsIntroduction; Arriving onboard; Parts of a boat; Ropes & lines; Undocking & docking; Mooring; Anchoring; Handling sails; At sea; Safety; Living aboard; Getting help - the VHF radio

  • Racundra's First Cruise

Fernhurst Books Limited Racundra's First Cruise

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisRacundra’s First Cruise is Arthur Ransome’s account of Racundra’s maiden voyage, which took place in August and September 1922. The cruise took him from Riga, in Latvia to Helsingfors (Helsinki) in Finland, via the Moon Sound and Reval (Tallinn) in Estonia and back. His first book on sailing, it was also the first of his titles that achieved such high levels of success. Although reprinted many times in various editions and formats, Fernhurst Books’ hardback edition of the title (2003) was the first to use the original text in its entirety - with the original layout, maps and photographs - and also includes an excellent introduction by Brian Hammett containing a treasure trove of previously unpublished writings, essays and photographs. Ransome’s first attempts at Baltic sailing, in his two previous boats, Slug and Kittiwake, are also explained in detail using his writings and illustrations. The life of Ransome’s beloved Racundra is chronicled to its conclusion and there is an explanation of how he came to write the book. The original illustrations are enhanced by the inclusion of present day photographs of the same locations. Having gone out of print in 2012, this new paperback edition retains all of the original and additional features; bringing back to life Ransome’s epic first cruise in his pride and joy, his treasured Racundra.Trade Review“One of the most popular sailing yarns ever written.” (The Independent) “Ransome has managed to get a true yachtsman’s enthusiasm into his pages, and his readers will enjoy his vivid account of steering with a defective compass and his frank confession that he went to sleep at the tiller.” (The Observer). “His experiences and adventures in fair and dirty weather, the places he visited, the primitive life of the Estonian islanders, some extraordinarily beautiful anecdotes and the charm and humour of Mr. Ransome’s writing, form a book of which there is little to be said than that it is altogether delightful – a pleasure to read from beginning to end.” (The Spectator) "You don't have to be a sailing expert to enjoy this nautical yarn, but you'll wish you were by the time you finish it." (Lifeboat Magazine)Table of ContentsPREFACE: Introduction, Slug, Kittiwake, Racundra, The writing of Racundra’s First Cruise, On the Pirate Ship; RACUNDRA’S FIRST CRUISE; APPENDIX: A Description of Racundra, Racundra after Ransome, Chronology, Bibliography, Acknowledgements.

  • First Indian: The First Indian Solo

Fernhurst Books Limited First Indian: The First Indian Solo

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAn engrossing narrative of one man's struggle to achieve his dream against all odds, this is both a fast-paced adventure and a telling commentary on how heroes are often made despite the system they operate in, by dint of sheer perseverance and commitment to a chosen path. Above all, it's a paean to the power of self-belief that serves to inspire, motivate and exhilarate. On 19 May 2010, as he sailed INSV Mhadei into Mumbai harbour, Commander Dilip Donde earned his place in India's maritime history by becoming the first Indian to complete a solo circumnavigation under sail, south of the 3 Great Capes. The feat, successfully completed by just over 200 people in the world, had never been attempted in his country before. In his own words, the book chronicles his progress over four years, from building a suitable boat with an Indian boat-builder; weaving his way through the sea-blind and often quixotic bureaucracy; and training himself with no precedent or knowledge base in the country, to finally sailing solo around the world. During this gruelling task he was mentored by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first man to sail solo non-stop around the world.Trade Review“The First Indian launches you into ‘Sagar Parikrama’, a five-year mission that built the Mhadei from scratch in India and primed it for the conquest of the ‘Everest of the Seas’, her skipper Commander Dilip Donde’s incredible voyage around the world. His account of the voyage is riveting and unputdownable. This nautical page turner drips with old-school man-versus-the-elements adventure.” (India Today) “With so many odds stacked against him, Dilip Donde’s achievement is an inspiration to anyone attempting an expedition. There are many life lessons in this candid book, but what stands out most is that besides grit, determination and strength, what one really needs to go through any pioneering journey is patience, a sense of humour and a dedicated team of supporters.” (National Geographic Magazine India) “A riveting tale of enduring conviction and grit. Cdr Donde’s evocative rendering of his intrepid path breaking voyage has the reader vicariously live through the whole experience in its measured advance, unforeseen intricacies and iridescent afterglow. The maverick seafarer, who survived bureaucratic lulls on land and daunting gales at sea, is equally adroit at telling tales.” (The Hindu) “Cdr Donde’s wry wit makes you forget just how daunting the experiences described in this book must have been. Such tales of courage and pioneering adventure are rare in our times, when there are few firsts left. For an Indian to accomplish this, given the many constraints, is even more extraordinary.” (Hindustan Times) “A solo sailor is solo, cut off from the world and outside assistance and dependent upon their own character and resourcefulness. This book is a tribute to Dilip’s determination to achieve the objective and become the first Indian to ever sail solo around the planet.” (Sir Robin Knox-Johnston) "An entertaining read." Fernhurst Books Limited Last Voyages: The Lives and Tragic Loss of

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisLooking back at the lives and sailing careers of some of our lifetime’s finest yachtsmen, this collection of eleven original, moving accounts is just as much a celebration of the good – tales of hope, achievement and courageous spirit – as it is an account of their tragic final voyages. Included are world-renowned racers, like Eric Tabarly and Rob James, highly experienced cruisers and adventurers, like Peter Tangvald and Bill Tilman, and the notoriously ill-prepared Donald Crowhurst, as well as other famous and some less well-known sailors. Starting with the sad loss of Frank Davison and Reliance in 1949, the book concludes with the amazing last voyage of Philip Walwyn in 2015 – crossing the Atlantic single-handed in his 12 Metre yacht Kate. All of the men and women described were friends with or known to the author, Nicholas Gray, who himself competed in several short-handed long distance races, where he met and raced against many of these fascinating characters. Peppered with photographs showcasing the sailors and their yachts, this is a refreshing look at those who have helped to shape this sport’s history, honouring their lives and accomplishments before detailing their tragic last voyages.Trade Review"This is an unusual and absorbing book. The subject matter is not as depressing as it sounds. Nicholas Gray has succeeded in making it more of a celebration of the lives and achievements of these remarkable people. They all lived life to the full, and Last Voyages is a very fitting tribute." (Royal Cruising Club) “breath-taking accounts of events that led to the tragic seafaring deaths of seventeen people….in a captivating easy-to-read style, each page crammed with information and insights… a ‘must-read’ for anyone contemplating a serious sea voyage or offshore race.” (Cruising Association) “These memoirs are just as much a celebration of the good – tales of hope, achievement and courageous spirit – as they are an account of the tragic final voyages.” (All At Sea)Table of ContentsForeword: Sir Chay Blyth; Introduction; 1: The last voyage of Ann and Frank Davison and the loss of the Reliance (1949); 2: The strange last voyage of Donald Crowhurst and the trimaran Teignmouth Electron (1969); 3: The life and last voyage of Mike McMullen and the loss of the trimaran Three Cheers (1976); 4: The last voyage of Simon Richardson and Bill Tilman and the loss of En Avant in the South Atlantic (1977); 5: The life and loss of Alain Colas and his trimaran Manureva (1978); 6: The last voyage and loss of the trimaran Bucks Fizz and her entire crew in the Fastnet Race of 1979; 7: The life, last voyage and loss of Angus Primrose and Demon of Hamble (1980); 8: The life and last voyage of Rob James on board his trimaran Colt Cars GB (1983); 9: The life, loves and last voyages of Peter Tangvald on board L'Artemis and his son Thomas on board Oasis (1991 and 2014); 10: The life and last voyage of Eric Tabarly on board his yacht Pen Duick (1998); 11: The extraordinary life and last voyage of Philip Walwyn on board his 12 Metre yacht Kate (2015); Afterword

Fernhurst Books Limited Illustrated Seamanship: Ropes & Ropework, Boat

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisToday, yachts are often equipped with electrical windlasses, autopilot, bow thrusters, etc. This equipment has also become much more reliable, making it possible to make long offshore passages without much knowledge of seamanship. However, as the coastguards in many countries can confirm, more and more yachts require assistance, even when they should be able to reach harbour on their own. In this book you will be shown the traditional techniques you should be familiar with – regarding rope handling, manoeuvring and anchoring – in order to make long or short passages safely. Each element is clearly explained alongside detailed illustrations, combining to make a straightforward and easy-to-follow guide. Although yacht gear is becoming more and more reliable, you can be almost sure that, sooner or later, it will fail or you will be out of electrical power to use it. Learning the traditional techniques may not only be necessary but is also both interesting and fun. Instead of waking up the entire harbour in the early hours with the noise of your bow thruster, you may, alternatively, use a spring line to get safely moored to or leave the pontoon quietly. Due to the design of the book, we have had to restrict the layout of the ebook to PDF style which may result in giving you a more restricted reading experience. For this reason, we would not recommend viewing it on very small screens.Trade Review"If you're new to sailing, this book will teach you almost everything you'll ever need to know about ropework, boathandling and anchoring. So as well as chuckling at the cartoons themselves there is the opportunity to learn from Peyton’s 50 years of experience of sailing different boats, meeting a variety of sailors, and getting into – and out of – some truly hilarious situations.Trade Review“A welcome re-run of the greatest cartoons from yachting’s greatest cartoonist.” (Classic Boat) “Looking through the book, which depicts so many years of sailing, it’s easy to understand why Mike’s work is loved by so many. There’s a gentle, warm humour to his work, which will be much missed in the sailing world.” (Sailing Today) “Whatever branch of yachting is our choice, Mike caught us to a tee. His ability to squeeze the juice out of a situation we all have shared, while populating it with characters we know so well, was unique.” (Tom Cunliffe, Yachting World) “As well as 79 classic cartoons, I particularly enjoyed the 32 pages written by Mike filled with wonderfully-observed vignettes from his 50 years afloat, like written versions of his cartoons. Worthy of a place next to anyone’s bunk.” (Yachting Monthly)Table of Contents1. Fifty Years of Sailing; 2. Deep Water; 3. Land in Sight; 4. All Ashore; 5. Jumbles; 6. Below Decks; 7. Book SynopsisMartyn Murray was finding modern life, with all its restrictions and controls, suffocating. Following years of soul-searching, his father's death triggered him into opening the old logbooks and charts to retrace the sailing trips they had once shared together. He determined to revisit those waters and bring home the freedom of the seas. Falling in love with an old ketch in Ireland, he bought and restored her enough to sail back to Scotland. Over the next two summers he cruised Scotland's Western Isles, with one goal: to reach St Kilda - the remotest part of the British Isles, 40 miles from the Outer Hebrides. During his cruising he considered the islanders and their sense of freedom - often restricted by absentee landlords and officialdom. He riled against bureaucracy and commercial enterprise restricting the yachtsman's ability to roam free. For parts of his journey he was joined by the beguiling Kyla; a rare, independent spirit who both excited and frustrated Martyn. But much of Martyn's voyaging was undertaken alone, encountering a variety of places, situations and characters along the way. He attempted his long-awaited sail out to St Kilda through the teeth of a storm, believing that achieving this feat would bring him the freedom and clarity that he craved. What he came up against was far more testing and turbulent than the tides and gales of the North Atlantic. As he sailed back to the mainland things fell into place: a sense of achievement in completing the arduous voyage alone, but - most of all - an understanding of who he is, clarity on his relationship with Kyla and a real sense of his own freedom.Trade Review"What an exhilarating experience, reading those pages! This is a special book, the style and thinking behind it in perfect harmony." (Dervla Murphy). "A terrific read, full of adventure and learning, and will inspire a lot of people who have only thought about major voyages to step on to their boats and actually make them." (Sam Llewellyn). "A Wild Call is one of those all-too-rare books that you just know you are going to remember, a book you can expect to come to mind at odd moments as you encounter the joys and challenges of your own everyday life. It's beautifully written and eminently readable, but those aren't the characteristics that make it stand out and give it such an enduring quality. What really makes this book special is that it is thought-provoking and inspirational. A Wild Call is a book we thoroughly enjoyed and are glad to have read. " (Undiscovered Scotland website) "Grand tale....... really enjoyed it!" (Tom Cunliffe, Yachting Journalist, Author and Broadcaster). "wonderful heart-warming tale, looking at the bonds of family and freedom of adventure... This book is truly a treat for anyone who loves sailing, Scotland, adventure, or just a good story. Highly recommended." (Sailing Today) "Thought-provoking account of one man's Scottish cruise north towards St Kilda and much more." (Classic Boat). "When packing for your next cruise, I suggest that you slip a copy of A Wild Call into your bag." (Clyde Cruising Club) "... wonderfully heart-warming tale, looking at the bonds of family and freedom of adventure... This book is truly a treat for anyone who loves sailing, Scotland, or just a good story. Highly recommended." (Sailing Today, Nov 2017) "A Wild Call comes out in a series devoted to sailing... but even if you don't know your keel for your burgee, it has the universal appeal of a love story... The yacht and dinghy crowd might well wish that Murray had dumped a lot of the romantic stuff, but the real heart of the book, and by no means the smoothly beating heart, is the story of his relationship to the red-haired woman he calls Kyla. I've rarely encountered such a compelling but troubling character in a real-life book... It's certainly not just a book for sailors, because it speaks to something in all of us." (The National, Oct 2017) "... the journey of self-discovery of an intelligent, sensitive man sailing again the seas of his early life off the coast of Scotland. The waters may be familiar to many a yachtsman, but his perspective enriches our understanding of these well-travelled seaways." (Tom Cunliffe, Yachting World, Nov 2017) "A fascinating account of one man's rediscovery of the joy of sailing in the Western Isles and his search for freedom for himself, for yachtsmen and for the Scottish islanders." (Yachting Life, Jan 2018) "For readers who have sailed these waters, or are yearning to do so, the detailed descriptive text will do wonders!... His harrowing journey to reach his destination makes the reader admire and respect his considerable courage and ingenuity... an interesting read of sailors and landspeople alike." (Cruising Association, 2017) "well written. The slight edge of panic at the cost of each repair has a very familiar ring. His satisfaction at each challenge overcome is shared. The description of the anchorages and moorings of the Inner and Outer Hebridean Islands is highly evocative and anyone who has been there will enjoy revisiting them." (Little Ship Club, Jan 2018) "A very enjoyable read." (Royal Cruising Club, March 2018) "A Wild Call would be a good read for many, especially those with an interest in sailing and the Scottish waters. The book also covers themes such as love and friendship throughout, making it heart-warming and enjoyable to read. Overall, A Wild Call is a very gentle and satisfying book." (Scottish Field, March 2018) “Tales of people who find aspects of modern life suffocating are not uncommon. However, Martyn Murray goes the distance, so to speak, in setting his target, St Kilda, quitting work, restoring and equipping an old ketch as well as sailing from Cork to the Crinan Canal and out into the Atlantic. The challenges he faced were more than just maritime.” (Scottish Islands Explorer, Nov 2017)Table of ContentsPreface; PART ONE: 1. Wild Boat Chase, 2. Dog Watch, 3. Did We Mean To Go To Sea?, 4. 10 in stock

Book SynopsisSince the development of the International Moth into a fully foiling dinghy there has been an explosion in the popularity of the class with some of the world's top sailors competing in it and many others enjoying the exhilaration of `flying'. However there is no doubt that it is a challenge to learn to fly a Moth and other designs are being introduced which are easier to sail and provide foiling opportunities for less dedicated, larger and less agile sailors. This book, the first to be published on dinghy foiling, explains how foils work and how to foil in the International Moth, Waszp and F101. Anyone who can sail a fast planing dinghy like the Laser should be able to foil and this book takes you through the skills and techniques required. Starting with the theory, the book goes through rigging and launching, then low-ride sailing, tacking and gybing before moving onto flying and, of course, the foiling gybe and tack. All illustrated by hundreds of colour photographs and many diagrams. Alan Hillman has taught hundreds of sailors to foil, including some of the top names. Through this book his expertise is available to everyone and there is no excuse not to get up on the foils and fly!Trade Review"Sailing a foiling Moth is not only fun, it is also quite a challenge to learn how to do it and this book provides a perfect manual. Alan Hillman has been coaching people to sail International Moths for many years and is just the right person to introduce you to this... Foiling is here to stay and will only grow and grow. With this book you will be able to understand what foiling is and how you can join in." (Mike Lennon, past National & European International Moth Champion) "If you have any thoughts of Foiling this season then this is the book for you. The Foiling Dinghy Book is the first ever book on this subject and provides a perfect introduction to the world of dinghy foiling." (Sailweb, Feb 2018) "If you had thought foiling was beyond you, have a read to Fernhurst's great how-to-guide and think again." (Yachts & Yachting, April 2018) “Alan Hillman’s experience in teaching foiling in both Moths and F101s has now usefully been incorporated into his new book… While his descriptions are particularly aimed at Moths, Waszps and F101s, readers will be able to absorb and apply the lessons to whatever other types of foiler are invented in the future. Foiling is so different to mainstream dinghy sailing, and you can’t expect just to jump on board a foiler and go. Read and absorb this book, and you will be well on your way to confident foiling before you’ve even put your boat in the water!” (Yachting Life, May 2018)Table of ContentsAlan Hillman. Contents. Book SynopsisKim Sturgess was a weekend sailor: he enjoyed club racing and several brief sailing holidays, but had never attempted a substantial expedition. Reaching the age of fifty focused the mind and he decided to sail around Britain. While many cruising sailors would not contemplate a 1900 nautical mile voyage, he broke the voyage into a series of day sails, making it an achievable ambition for him, largely single-handed, and for many other weekend sailors who might dream of sailing around their home island. This book tells the quirky traveller's narrative of the voyage and visits to forty-eight towns. Evoking the spirit of both Jerome K. Jerome with his Three Men in a Boat and Joshua Slocum's Sailing Alone Around the World, Kim shares his thoughts and struggles, recounting how easy it is for anyone to become an adventurer here at home. But don't expect to always agree with him - he has been described as "the Jeremy Clarkson of yachting"!Trade Review"If the thought of tough coastal night passages puts you off sailing round Britain, try Kim Sturgess's tactic of breaking the voyage down into '50 day sails and one night passage' as he did... It's interesting for anyone thinking of making the voyage." (Yachting Monthly) "His narrative grips the reader as we share the heart-in-the-mouth experience... He tells his story with a vivid immediacy: we are there with him. We share the dangers he faces during the miserable summer of 2007, his philosophical observations along the way and his sadness at recurring evidence of national decline in the places he visits." (Cruising Association) “Sail the glorious and challenging coast of Britain with Kim Sturgess in his salty tale…. His leisurely approach to adventure takes in towns and villages along the way and brings to life the great variety of culture and cuisine on our small island… It’s wonderful, warm and well worth a read.” (Sailing Today) An unusual travel guide by an unusual companion.” (Yachting Life)Table of ContentsPreface; PART ONE: SWAPPING THE LONDON UNDERGROUND FOR THE BRITISH SEAS: Cruise Philosophy, My Sailing Experience, Hobo the Yacht, Safety for a Sailor; PART TWO: GREENWICH TO GREENWICH AROUND THE BRITISH ISLES: East: Greenwich to Inverness, North: Inverness to Bangor NI, West: Bangor NI to Newlyn, South: Newlyn to Greenwich; Epilogue; Glossary; Appendix.

Book SynopsisWe all rely on charts to navigate at sea - but are we missing essential information? A mass of data is included on each chart and deciphering the many symbols and abbreviations can be complicated. The accuracy of some charted depths can be trusted entirely while others should be treated with caution. This book will tell you where to find and how to understand this vital knowledge. This updated second edition explains how charts are compiled before guiding you through the elements that make up these vital navigational tools. Improve your understanding of charts and you will navigate with increased safety and confidence. Understanding a Nautical Chart offers superb value as, in addition to a wealth of practical advice, there is a key to all the recently updated chart symbols and abbreviations from Symbols and Abbreviations Used on Admiralty Charts (5011). It includes information on electronic charts, explains how to update a chart and how to establish the accuracy of each chart. It is ideal for professional mariners and leisure sailors.Trade Review“The author was an Admiral in the Royal Navy, is now Chief Executive of the RNLI and is still a keen yachtsman. He knows of what he writes. At a cost of just under £20, this is a bargain and an invaluable asset to any chart table.” (Royal Cruising Club, May 2018) “If you’d like to demystify the world of nautical navigation, this handy guide will teach you how to read a chart and navigate safely… simple to understand and filled with helpful illustrations. With this book on your chart table, you can feel confident and ready for an adventure next time you set sail.” (Lifeboat Magazine, Summer 2018) “This is unashamedly a book about paper charts and it’s a good addition to use as an aide memoire or if you are going to take a course in navigation.” (Classic Sailor, July 2018) "Highly recommended... a very valuable resource... almost everyone will take something from it." (Sailing Today) "Not only does the book provide a complete key to chart symbols, it explains the way they are compiled." (Yachting World) "He writes delightfully; his asides won from a long professional acquaintance with the sea are always apposite and often amusing, sharing with me for instance an appreciation of the hard-won good sense and often romance to be found in the august pages of the Admiralty Pilots. This, and his book following Learn the Nautical Rules of the Road is highly commended to all those who venture to set forth upon Neptune's Realm." (Julian Stockwin, Jan 2018) "With fascinating anecdotes, including the opening line `I have been lost at sea on a number of occasions' and the tale of the 1992 grounding of the QE2 off Martha's Vineyard, this is essential reading for professionals and enthusiasts alike." (Practical Boat Owner, Jan 2018) "Any skipper, of any level of experience, will learn plenty from studying this book. You may be shocked at the revelation that a chart is never 100% accurate but, knowing the limitations of the tools at your command, may one day keep you out of trouble. This is an author who displays an in-depth command of his subject." 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is an A-Z of seamanship skills for multihull sailors. There are many textbooks on the market which detail general seamanship principles. This is not one of them. Multihull Seamanship is about sea-going catamarans and trimarans and the skills needed to understand and enjoy them to their utmost. Both racing and cruising yachts are catered for, as are trailer-able multihulls. Seamanship is not a black and white skill. It is an evolution of knowledge; a building of information through experiment, thought and experience. There is no definitive word on an evolving skill. Multihull Seamanship started as Dr Gavin Le Sueur's personal index of `how-to's. It has grown through experience and others sharing their knowledge. It should be on the book shelf of every catamaran and trimaran. This book is for people who are already multihull sailors, or for those who are contemplating multihull sailing. It has served this community for over 20 years and this second edition is fully updated. It is illustrated with delightful line drawings by Nigel Allison.Trade Review“This is the second, updated edition… and it’s excellent. Gavin Le Sueur and his co-skipper Catherine have a lifetime’s experience of cruising, racing and bringing up their children in multihulls. Le Sueur’s approach is both passionate and scientific. His wealth of hard-won experience is organised alphabetically: C, for instance, includes Capsize Prevention, Capsize Survival, Cargo, Children, Cyclones. `Babies in bassinets can be gimballed in a net bag secured strongly to the hull’, is a sentence to be relished. There’s S for Sinking, W for Whales and a huge amount of day-to-day lore in between. Le Sueur conveys eloquently why multihulls are special. His `Seamanship Rules’ should be learnt by heart.” (Yachting Monthly, June 2010) “When I had finished reading it, I started to understand how I should be thinking about handling my multihull, rather than just following general written advice. I started to think about the vessel and its interaction with the forces around it: how one action, say on sail trim, could change the dynamic on another, say dagger board loading. This led to a greater understanding of load dynamics in developing conditions, ensured a more comfortable ride on board and resulted in less wear and tear on gear. This new edition of Le Sueur’s book must be a recommended read for anyone on the multihull journey.” (Royal Cruising Club, October 2018) "A `must read' for anyone with multihull ambitions." (Modern Boating) "Practical... valuable reading for novices as well as those who have been around the scene and want to improve their skills." (Cruising Helmsman) "Could literally be life saving. Anyone preparing to build, buy or just sail a multihull would be advised to read this book." (Multihull World)Table of ContentsAcknowledgements. Foreword. Author Dr Gavin Le Sueur. Book SynopsisUnless you have unbeatable boatspeed, tactics are vital to winning sailboat races. Multi-champion, Nick Craig, shows you how to develop a strategy and what tactics to adopt on every leg and at every mark of the course. His first book, Helming to Win, was described as "original, thought provoking... like no other that has gone before it". He now turns his highly analytical mind to the subject of tactics. He discusses the inputs into strategy, starting and the race plan (going through each leg in turn). Nick then tackles mark tactics, covering every different type of mark, and fleet tactics on every leg of the course. He finally focusses on boat-to-boat tactics, again on every leg of the course. In each situation he covers attacking and defensive tactics, either to get ahead or make sure you stay ahead. Non-spinnaker, symmetrical spinnaker and asymmetric dinghies are all covered because Nick has won world or national championships in each of these types of boats. Having read Nick's first book many said that it had transformed the way they sailed. This book will have the same effect on your tactics and should see you moving up the leaderboard.Trade Review“In this book, multi-championship winner, Nick Craig, tells you all you need to know about strategy and tactics. From creating a strategy and race plan to tactics on each leg and at each mark, Nick covers it all in this excellent book. Book SynopsisRestoring a fibreglass yacht is not something for the faint-hearted, even if you don’t intend to do all the work yourself (you still need to understand the processes to be gone through). But the satisfaction of the job well done, not to mention the possible cost savings on buying a new yacht, are immense. Nevertheless, it is not something that should be undertaken lightly and without careful consideration. That is where this book comes in, as Enric Roselló takes you through his restoration of a 30-year-old 40-foot yacht. Broken down into 46 chapters, Enric details the stages of his restoration in chronological order. For each he starts with an overview of the task and the thinking behind the approach he took. Just these introductory pieces alone are ideal for someone contemplating a restoration (of all or part of a boat) to read before making the final decision as to whether to go ahead. For those who decide to take on the challenge, each overview is followed by an in-depth step-by-step account of what they did, accompanied by numerous informative photo sequences (with over 800 colour photos in total). The material in this book would be invaluable both to boat owners who are considering a complete overhaul and to those who have one or two smaller jobs to do. All possible subjects are covered, including dealing with osmosis, the interiors, deck, rigging, electrics and electronics, plumbing, engine, galley, heads and much more. The author is very honest about the amount of work and commitment required and also offers advice about when to call in the professionals and when to consider doing the work yourself. Anyone contemplating a complete or partial restoration is advised to read this book beforehand, so you know what is ahead, and to follow its guidance if you to decide to proceed.Trade Review"...a very well researched book, easy to browse and easy to follow. Book SynopsisOn 14th June 1968 Robin Knox-Johnston set sail from Falmouth to take part in the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race - the first, non-stop, single-handed sailing race around the world. He was an unknown 29-year old Merchant Navy Officer. Ten and a half months later he sailed back into Falmouth, the only finisher in the race and the first man to complete a non-stop solo circumnavigation. Since then he has had an illustrious sailing career, with 3 further circumnavigations, including the fastest circumnavigation and last racing solo round the world in 2007, aged 68. Few people have sailed as many miles as Robin. Now, 50 years since setting out on the Golden Globe Race, you can benefit from Robin's wealth of experience as he shares his thoughts on seamanship and seafaring in this new book, selected from his most provoking, insightful and perceptive writing from the pages of Yachting World magazine. The first half of the book concentrates on seamanship and looks at the skills and gear required. The second half allows Robin to reminisce on memorable boats, races and places he has experienced in his last 50 years of seafaring. The book starts with an original piece by Robin reflecting on the last 50 years.Trade Review“What makes this book so exciting is that it contains many of the things that Robin has learned over the years since he set of from Falmouth in 1968. Anyone who ventures to sea would be wise to take advantage of the seamanship lessons that Robin has learned. However, anyone who has met Robin also knows that he is not just a wise old seaman – he is also great fun and lives life to the full. This shows in the pieces on seafaring in this book where he tells of some of his favourite boats, races and places he has visited – always with a twinkle in his eye! They are a joy to read and remind us that sailing is primarily a fun activity, to be enjoyed!” (Alex Thomson, June 2018) “Now leisure sailors can benefit from Robin’s wealth of experience.” (Yachting Life, July 2018) “Hints, tips, advice and yarns from Britain’s most famous sailor; this is a great book to dip into when you’ve just come off watch or are waiting for someone to get back from the showers… Robin covers a huge range of subjects with seamanlike directness and a master mariner’s authority.” (Classic Sailor, June 2018) “well crafted and highly authoritative” (Sailing Today, Aug 2018) “One of the world’s greatest yachtsmen shares his thoughts on seamanship and seafaring.” (Julian Stockwin, June 2018) “This book is a delight to read. The chapter headings alone are worth the cover price. His advice is as useful for sailing round the Isle of Wight as for sailing round the world. Every word is helpful. An engaging and well written book.” (Little Ship Club, Summer 2018) “Every one is valuable” (Yachting Monthly, Aug 2018) “A very readable and wide-ranging collection of short essays… The brevity of these essays makes this an ideal book to pick up and browse, even when there is not much time for reading. Knox-Johnston writes very well, and all of the essays can be read and re-read, profitably and with enjoyment.” (Royal Cruising Club, Nov 2018)Table of ContentsForeword; Introduction; PART ONE: SEAMANSHIP: Skills; Gear; PART TWO: SEAFARING: Boats; Races; Places.

Book SynopsisIn Bed with the Atlantic is a travel memoir of a young woman, Kit Pascoe, as she goes from never having stepped on a yacht, to sailing over 18,000 miles - across the Atlantic, around the Caribbean and then back - in three years with her partner. At first, she was dogged by doubt, a belief that she wasn't a `sailor', never would be and that she was in no way capable of such an undertaking. She believed that the ocean was out to get her, that weather needed to be battled and that she would forever be ruled by the anxiety that plagued her. Woven into the narrative of the journey's progression are stories from Kit's childhood and life before the voyage, explaining her battles with anxiety and the feelings of being lost as a graduate in post-recession Britain. The book also relays her struggle with reconciling a life of travel with the expectations and experiences of those back home, at an age when most of her contemporaries were starting corporate careers and families. In her courage to leave everything she knows behind, she learns the history of the islands and their people, swims with turtles, explores strange cave systems, and learns to forage for food straight from the sea. But she also encounters hardships like running out of food and water, battling against storms, trying not to be struck by lightning, and discovering the crippling loneliness of sailing an ocean for months on end. Sailing back to the UK after three years Kit realises the colossal difference that sailing has made to her life and understanding of the world. She ponders how easy it is not to do something, to protect ourselves from risks and ridicule and everything that makes us uncomfortable. But now appreciates that it is only when we take the risk, that we get the reward and that we connect not just with the world at large, but also with ourselves.Trade Review“Pascoe is a fine travel writer, fascinated by all that she sees as well as by the changes she experiences in her understanding of the world. She is also a fearless risk taker who battles persistent anxiety with impressive success.” (Yachting Monthly, December 2018)Table of ContentsList of Stopovers; I Bought a Boat; Spanish Horizons; Columbus' Island; An Unfamiliar Ocean; Racing Grenada; Tropical France; A Caribbean Crossing; Sloth Hunting; Beating Through Rainbows to Paradise; The Sky, the Sea and the Waves; Northern Bahamas; Riding the Gulf Stream Home; The Outpost Islands; A Circle has No End; Sources; Glossary of Nautical Terms

  • The Mirror Book - Second Edition: Mirror Sailing

Fernhurst Books Limited The Mirror Book - Second Edition: Mirror Sailing

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Mirror dinghy was a significant factor in the boom of dinghy sailing in the 1960s, introducing thousands to the delights of sailing. While sailing has come a long way since then and there have been a lot of far more exotic craft launched, the Mirror remains a fantastic boat in which to learn to sail and to compete at the highest levels. With this second edition, The Mirror Book has been bought into the Start to Finish series format alongside such revered books as The Laser Book and The Topper Book, The Catamaran Book and The Foiling Dinghy Book. Like these titles, this book tells you everything you need to know about sailing the Mirror (whether it be the original gaff-rigged boat or has the newer Bermuda rig). Written for both those starting out through to those striving to win a championship, the book is packed with practical advice and illustrated with step-by-step photographs. It covers: setting up the Mirror and early sailing experiences; developing skills on all points of sailing and with the spinnaker; racing & masterclasses to become a championship winner. Over 180 photographs show you exactly how it's done, and 72 diagrams illustrate key boat parts, the different points of sailing and complex on-the-water scenarios with clarity. It is written by Peter Aitken, formerly the UK National Mirror Coach, who has coached teams to win world championships in the Mirror, Cadet and 420 classes, and Tim Davison, a successful racer and author of countless books on sailing. The UK Mirror Class Association have contributed to this update and it is endorsed by Dave Wade, double Mirror National Champion, who says: "Armed with this book, your understanding of Mirror sailing techniques will grow, and your results will improve. I thoroughly recommend it."Trade Review“My father wasn’t a sailor, but he said to me, `If you can sail a Mirror fast, you can make any boat sail fast.’ And it’s fair to say I think he was right, and it stood me in good stead. It teaches you team work, it teaches you spinnaker work, you have to learn about controlling the rig and, because it’s not an easily-driven hull, you have to learn a lot of good technique as well. I love the Mirror, and I always will.” (Ian Walker, Volvo Ocean Race winning skipper, Double Olympic silver medallist, Sep 2018) “Written for those starting out through to those striving to win a championship. Packed with practical advice and illustrated with step-by-step photographs.” (All At Sea, September 2018) “This book tells you everything you need to know about sailing the boat.” (Yachts & Yachtsing, October 2018) “Tells you all that you need to know about sailing a Mirro – whether you are new to sailing or wanting to move up the leader board. Armed with this book, your understanding of Mirror sailing techniques will grow, and your results will improve. I thoroughly recommend it.” (Dave Wade, Double Mirror National Champion) "...packed with practical information". Book SynopsisGold medal winning coach, Jon Emmett works with sailors and coaches around the world and is frequently asked things like: ‘What is a good exercise to improve this?’ ‘Why do we do this exercise?’ ‘How do we make the exercise more / less difficult?’ This book is the answer to those frequently asked questions. It contains training exercises for each element of a sailing race. As well as describing and illustrating the exercise, it tells you what skills you are trying to improve, why and how to make the exercise harder or easier. The book will enable coaches to deliver better, more focussed, training sessions, but it will also help sailors who don’t have the benefit of a coach to practise and improve their sailing skills. The exercises are marked as to whether they are suitable for solo boats, groups of boats or those with a coach boat. As Aristotle said: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit.” Armed with this book, get out, do some training and improve your sailing skills!Trade Review“Doing these exercises will, without doubt, improve your sailing and your race results. Fernhurst Books Limited Crewing to Win: How to be the best crew & a great

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe crew of a racing boat is as important as the helmsman – they work as a team to sail as fast as they can. But different members of that team have different roles in the boat. In addition to the obvious roles which belong to the crew – trimming the jib and spinnaker and helping keep the boat upright – the crew can also contribute to tactics, boat tuning, watching the competition and so on. In this book, Olympic gold medallist crew, Saskia Clark, describes all that is needed to become a top-rate crew, or just be a better crew at whatever level you want to compete at. She initially takes you through getting started as a crew and team – choosing a boat and setting your goals. She then turns to the specific crewing skills of hiking, trapezing, tacking, gybing, handling the spinnaker and having good boatspeed on each leg of the course. The focus then turns to racing and particularly the roles of each member of the team, communication, decision making and execution around the race course. Finally, she brings it all together with advice on how you can be the best crew and a great team. Packed with photographs this is the ultimate book for crews whether they are trying to win a championship or just wanting to sail at their local club. If your helm doesn’t buy it for you, treat yourself!Trade Review“In this brilliant book Sas shares her experience of what it takes to be the best crew and make a great team. Any crew, or indeed helm of a two-person boat, would benefit from reading it. Individual skills are covered – like hiking and trapezing, tacking and gybing, hoisting and lowering the spinnaker – and so are the team skills: dividing the roles in the boat both outside competition, pre-start and on each leg of the course. Sas is not prescriptive – she explains how we broke down the roles but is also aware that each team should work to their own strengths and weaknesses and find the best fit. Reading this book will improve your skills as a crew and make you a better team, whether you are just sailing at your local sailing club or competing internationally at the top of your fleet – I whole-heartedly recommend it.” (Hannah Mills)Table of ContentsForeword; INTRODUCTION: Welcome, Getting Started, A Day On The Water; SKILLS: Hiking Technique, Trapezing Technique, Tacking, Gybing, Symmetric Spinnakers, Asymmetric Spinnakers, Straight-Line Speed, Capsizing; RACING: Introduction to Racing, Pre-Start, Starting, Upwind, Downwind, Reaching; BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER: Being The Best Crew, Being A Great Team; Glossary

Fernhurst Books Limited Tactics Made Simple: Sailboat Racing Tactics

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisOlympic gold medallist and multiple world champion, Paul Goodison, explains why this book is important if you want to win races. He says: “To win sailboat races you need to sail the boat fast. This comes down to hours on the water training and tuning – there are few shortcuts to hours of practising on the water. To consistently win races you need to sail fast and smart – making the right decisions to sail the best course. If you are not the fastest boat, you are still able to win races and regattas by managing risk and sailing smart. This is where good tactics come in. But, unlike boatspeed, tactics may be learnt by thinking about each leg of the course and different situations from the comfort of your own home. Jon Emmett’s new book, Tactics Made Simple, is a great tool to help fast track this learning.” This book explains simply, through hundreds of diagrams, what tactics can be applied around the race track. Individual boats in each scenario are given names so that you can easily understand what they are doing. Individual chapters take you around the race course, from before you get on the water, through the pre-start, start, different legs and manoeuvres. Each section contains detailed advice for the beginner, intermediate and advanced sailor so you can just look at the level of tactics relevant to you. Ideal for dinghy sailors, there is also a wealth of advice that will benefit yachtsmen. This is a practical way to improve your racing results, whether starting out, moving up the club circuit or competing at national level and beyond. Originally published by Wiley Nautical as Be Your Own Tactics Coach.Trade Review“Jon Emmett’s new book, Tactics Made Simple, is a great tool to help fast track learning. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisElectricity is vital on board most boats: to keep their systems running and to provide the crew with the services they expect. Much of it will be professionally fitted and many yachtsmen will have little knowledge about the finer detail of electric circuits. But, given the importance of electrical power, some understanding of it is likely to be useful: either to use when required away from the marina or to repair and upgrade your systems. This book is written to provide that understanding and to allow you to undertake electrical jobs on board yourself, properly and safely. It removes the mystique of boat electrics and gives you the confidence to tackle the jobs when you need to. Included are the minimum formulae and theory required, focussing more on the practical – using simple language and clear illustrations. There are tutorials, from using a multimeter and wiring a circuit, to troubleshooting electrical faults, all using easy-to-follow photo sequences. The book also looks at tasks such as choosing solar panels and batteries and connecting navigational instruments. The book is a great manual for a yachtsman needing to keep the power flowing. It has been thoroughly modernised and updated for this new edition by boating electric wizard Oliver Ballam.Trade Review“A book to be kept on the boat together with a selection of the well-illustrated tools… will be immediately useful, even to the least confident.” (Yachting Monthly) “Straightforward in presentation, this work offers easy-to-read explanations...
