  • The Irish Franciscans in Prague 1629-1786

Karolinum,Nakladatelstvi Univerzity Karlovy,Czech Republic The Irish Franciscans in Prague 1629-1786

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisAt the end of the sixteenth century, Queen Elizabeth I forced the Irish Franciscans into exile. Of the four continental provinces to which the Irish Franciscans fled, the Prague Franciscan College of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary was the largest in its time. This monograph documents this intense point of contact between two small European lands, Ireland and Bohemia. The Irish exiles changed the course of Bohemian history in significant ways, both positive - the Irish students and teachers of medicine who contributed to Bohemia's culture and sciences - and negative - the Irish officers who participated in the murder of Albrecht of Valdstejn and their successors who served in the Imperial forces. Dealing with a hitherto largely neglected theme, Parez and Kucharova attempt to place the Franciscan College within Bohemian history and to document the activities of its members. This wealth of historical material from the Czech archives, presented in English for the first time, will be of great aid for international researchers, particularly those interested in Bohemia or the Irish diaspora.Trade Review"An important contribution to a fuller understanding of the Irish Franciscans during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Prague has been the major piece that has been missing." (Joseph McMahon, Franciscan Friary, Dublin)

Book SynopsisA down-to-earth and deeply intimate portrait of Pope Francis and his faith, based on interviews with the men and women who knew him simply as Jorge Mario Bergoglio Early on the evening of March 13, 2013, the newly elected Pope Francis stepped out onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica and did something remarkable: Before he imparted his blessing to the crowd, he asked the crowd to bless him, then bowed low to receive this grace. In the days that followed, Mark K. Shriver—along with the rest of the world—was astonished to see a pope who paid his own hotel bill, eschewed limousines, and made his home in a suite of austere rooms in a Vatican guesthouse rather than the grand papal apartment in the Apostolic Palace. By setting an example of humility and accessibility, Francis breathed new life into the Catholic Church, attracting the admiration of Catholics and non-Catholics alike. • In Rome We Trust: The Rise of Catholics in

Stanford University Press In Rome We Trust: The Rise of Catholics in

Book SynopsisOn the heels of an extremely lively U.S. presidential election campaign, this book examines the unusually serene relationship between the chief global superpower and the world's most ancient and renowned institution. The "Catholicization" of the United States is a recent phenomenon: some believe it began during the Reagan administration; others feel it emerged under George W. Bush's presidency. What is certain is that the Catholic presence in the American political ruling class was particularly prominent in the Obama administration: over one-third of cabinet members, the Vice President, the White House Chief of Staff, the heads of Homeland Security and the CIA, the director and deputy director of the FBI, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other top military officers were all Roman Catholic. Challenging received wisdom that the American Catholic Church is in crisis and that the political religion in the United States is Evangelicalism, Manlio Graziano provides an engaging account of the tendency of Catholics to play an increasingly significant role in American politics, as well as the rising role of American prelates in the Roman Catholic Church.Trade Review"Graziano provocatively analyzes the Catholic Church as a political institution, drawing attention to the surprisingly robust presence of Catholics at the top of the American political structure while noting the powerful role that US citizens have played in shaping the contours of Catholic approaches to freighted issues at the transnational level. His convincing conclusions with regard to the current mutually influential relationship between United States and Rome make for fascinating reading." -- Timothy Byrnes * Colgate University *"This fascinating and astonishingly neglected subject is of immense importance, and I can think of no one better positioned than Manlio Graziano to treat it in all its complexity." -- Stanislao G. Pugliese * Hofstra University *"[Graziano's] book deserves attention both from scholars interested in religion and politics, broadly understood, and from intelligent citizens searching for new possibilities for civic life." -- David J. O'Brien * Journal of the American Academy of Religion *"[Graziano] devotes much of In Rome We Trust to a tightly written, dispassionate and unsentimental account of American Catholic political history, one backed by substantial research." -- Jason K. Duncan * The Review of Politics *"[A]s the volume ably documents, Catholics have moved into the mainstream of national-level political life in America....The analysis is at its best in tracing the complex relationship between American and Vatican interests in international affairs. Graziano demythologizes the U.S.-Vatican relationship in the post-World War II era, particularly the cooperation between President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II." -- David T. Buckley * Political Science Quarterly *"Manlio Graziano's In Rome We Trust is much more than an erudite and well documented analysis of the relations between the Vatican and the United States, between Catholicism and the ultimate superpower. It is a priceless interpretation of the geopolitics that the Roman Church, appearing here in its worldly role, and America, the leader of the West, have recently practiced and will continue to practice in the post-Cold War era." -- Corriere della SeraTable of ContentsContents and Abstracts1Catholics in the United States: The Greek in the Midst of Troy chapter abstractThis chapter describes the essentially anti-Catholic nature of the 13 colonies and of the early years of the United States, as well as the specific role of the Catholics at that time. 2The Catholic Church and the United States: The Discovery of America chapter abstractThis chapter recounts the early stages of the relationship between the universal Catholic Church and the United States, and the long-term fundamental incomprehension of the nature of the United States by a Catholic Church still exclusively Eurocentric 3The Catholic Church and the United States: Parallel Empires chapter abstractThis chapter treats the relationship between the universal Catholic Church and the United States in the twentieth century before the establishment of diplomatic relations, and the global competition over moral values 4Catholics and American Politics: The Rise and Fall of the New Deal Coalition chapter abstractThis chapter describes the evolution of the political role of American Catholics from the World War I to the Reagan administration, with particular attention to Roosevelt's New Deal Coalition 5Politics and Religion in the United States: The Evangelical Meteorite chapter abstractThis chapter covers the political role of Evangelicalism in the United States, and shows how the Catholic Church was able to learn from this experience as well 6Catholicization of the United States: Shift of Power and Catholicization chapter abstractThis Chapter shows how American Catholics became more and more present at the top of the political power in the United States and puts this trend in relation with the general geopolitical frame of global power shifts and the relative decline of the US 7The Americanization of the Catholic Church: In America We Trust chapter abstractThis chapter presents the real condition of the American Catholic Church today, providing data and considerations that contradict commonplaces about the crisis of Catholicism. It also recounts the stages of the process of "Americanization" of the universal Catholic Church, not only in financial terms nor by the growing numbers of American cardinals, but essentially in terms of adoption of the American model of free competition on the market of faith: from social doctrine to freedom of religion, through to the condemnation of anti-Semitism. The election of an "American Pope" is the last stage of this process.

Book SynopsisGiuliana Chamedes offers the first comprehensive history of the Vatican’s efforts to defeat the forces of secular liberalism and communism through international law, cultural diplomacy, and a marriage of convenience with authoritarian and right-wing rulers.Trade ReviewFascinating…A work of tremendous ambitions and impressive panoramic scope. Beautifully written and thoroughly researched, it charts one of the 20th century’s most far-reaching cultural-political projects, which stretched over dozens of countries and unfolded over decades…What Chamedes has superbly charted is the world that [Pope] Francis has set to demolish. How his alternative will fare, and whether it will succeed where his predecessors had failed, is still to be seen. -- Udi Greenberg * Los Angeles Review of Books *Readers seeking backstories for the Vatican agreements that legitimated Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany will not be disappointed. Nor will students wrestling with how to place the Vatican within the global history of the twentieth century…Part intellectual history, part history of the international system, part collective biography. -- Piotr H. Kosicki * Times Literary Supplement *Eye-opening…Zealous hostility to communism and socialism led the church into legal alliance with right-wing reactionaries…This fascinating book highlights that the church’s present is always in dialogue with its past. -- Christopher Kissane * Irish Times *This study of what preceded Vatican II can help one to appreciate the Council even more. -- Michael Fitzgerald * The Tablet *Has the potential for very broad appeal…Chamedes’ work seems to provide the necessary framework for any future study of Catholic internationalism. -- Anastasiia Akulich * European Review of History *Superb…Chamedes’s book is a magisterial achievement. It will remain the standard work on Catholic internationalism for years. -- Peter McDonough * Journal of Church and State *Chamedes’s excellent new book is a welcome corrective to standard narratives about the papacy’s supposed irrelevance in modern international history…A fluidly written, engaging and ground-breaking work that deserves a wide audience. This book will benefit…anyone seeking to understand the role of ideology in modern international history. -- Patrick J. Houlihan * Journal of Ecclesiastical History *While much has been written about the Catholic anti-Communist crusade in the interwar period, [Chamedes] examines it more thoroughly and comprehensively than most historians have done hitherto…This is an important monograph on an important aspect of the history of the papacy in the twentieth century. -- John Pollard * Journal of Modern History *The picture that emerges of the Church’s political role in twentieth-century Europe is utterly damning…Will stand as a vital account of the uses to which [the Vatican’s] force has been put, shorn of apologetics and exhaustively documented. -- Daniel Finn * New Left Review *This important book reveals the unknown story of the Vatican’s efforts to reshape international relations in the twentieth century. Facing new competition from secularism, liberalism, and communism, the Church responded with an international program of its own: ‘concordat diplomacy.’ In recovering this lost history, Chamedes sheds new light on seemingly familiar terrain and enhances our understanding of a complicated past that continues to resonate today. -- Andrew Preston, author of Sword of the Spirit, Shield of Faith: Religion in American War and DiplomacyThis is transnational history at its best. In this impressively researched book, Giuliana Chamedes reaches into all corners of the European continent as she brings forth the crucial role of the Vatican and its particular brand of internationalism in Europe’s tumultuous twentieth century. It is essential reading for those interested in modern Europe and in religion. -- Elizabeth Foster, author of African CatholicChamedes offers a pathbreaking study of twentieth-century Catholic internationalism and papal diplomacy that illuminates a vast terrain of hitherto unknown transnational activity. Her book is not just an eye-opening addition to the literature on internationalism, it reframes our understanding of twentieth-century modernity. An essential contribution. -- Adam Tooze, author of CrashedThis comprehensive study provides a broad perspective on 20th-century papal diplomacy's crusade to sustain Catholic influence in European society. * Choice *

In his hands there is nothing suspicious or frightening about Teresa’s interior life with angels and demons, and the reader is given a quasi-divine reassurance that it really doesn’t matter if those modern theoretical interpretations are too abstruse to be readily understood."---Stella Fletcher, Times Literary Supplement"This is an important . . . tribute to a great saint by an intelligent, erudite and humane author."---Alexander Jolliffe, Catholic Herald"The Vida is Teresa’s attempt to come to grips with her visionary experiences, mainly between 1554 and 1565, but within the context of an apologetic or forced confession so that the authorities could examine her writings for fraud, challenge to authority and orthodoxy. The challenge to readers then, and even more so now, is her unquestioning assumption and experience that ‘human beings can transcend the sensory material world and have intimate relations with the Creator of the universe.’" * Paradigm Explorer *"Carlos Eire has written an excellent introduction to The Life of Saint Teresa of Avila. Written in his clear, accessible and lively prose, Eire places the sixteenth-century Spanish nun’s life into each of the contexts a reader would need to engage her mystical writings."---Marc R. • Nazis of Copley Square

Harvard University Press Nazis of Copley Square

Book SynopsisDuring WWII, some American Catholics openly embraced Nazism. Their armed wing, the Christian Front, was to lead the violent revolution. Charles Gallagher unearths the history of these crusaders, the mainstream theological underpinnings of their activism, the spiritual and political leaders who protected them, and the suppression of their memory.Trade ReviewA great, but deeply unsettling, revelation…A searing examination of how a city—where for nearly four centuries the phrase ‘cradle of liberty’ has slipped effortlessly off the tongue with a distinct Boston accent—played host to a group whose leading figures spoke favorably of Nazi Germany…This book is more than an account of Boston in wartime. It is a warning. -- David M. Shribman * Boston Globe *[A] well told, expertly researched, and much-needed history of the Christian Front, an organization that presages today’s far-right activity…Riveting. I found the result startling. -- Paul Moses * Commonweal *A fascinating and terrifying story of terrorist plots, secret efforts to undermine the Allied war effort, and the stoking of antisemitic attacks…The language of the Christian Front—the barely coded appeals to antisemitism, the embrace of economic populism, and the effort to paint themselves as patriotic victims of discrimination—has a strong contemporary echo in the rhetoric of the US far right. -- Robert Philpot * Jewish Chronicle *Takes a searing look at the Christian Front, an American extremist group that weaponized Catholicism…With historical complexity and suspenseful intrigue, Nazis of Copley Square reveals one of America’s secret and most disturbing domestic enemies. * Foreword Reviews *An eye-opening look at the Christian Front, a far-right political movement founded in 1939…Gallagher also explains how the Christian Front’s ‘interlac[ing] of Christianity and patriotism’ influenced today’s religious right, and analyzes how political extremists exploit free speech protections. This vigorously researched chronicle uncovers a dark chapter in American history. * Publishers Weekly *Fascinating…Gallagher sheds valuable light on one of the darkest episodes in Irish American history. -- Tom Deignan * Irish Central *In the US, in the lead-up to WWII, a dangerous fascist movement sprang up through the Catholic church, drawing on priests, powerful lay people, and working-class parishioners. The movement, known as the ‘Christian Front,’ actively worked to support Nazi Germany in the US. Its history has mostly been swept under the rug, but Gallagaher is determined to shine a new light on it in his powerful new study. * CrimeReads *An amazing whodunit that will keep readers glued to every page. * Choice *Shows that we cannot understand right-wing extremism without examining its violent history and the integral role of certain religious doctrines, which these ringleaders mobilized to justify violence, exclusion, anti-Semitism, and even collaboration with Nazi spies. -- Eric Grube * New Books Network *The rare book by a scholar that is such a page-turner it is hard to put down, Gallagher’s Nazis of Copley Square is a potent brew of spy story, detective story, and frank, fearless account of how a significant wing of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States spawned a movement aimed at defending Hitler and sabotaging America’s war effort. -- David I. Kertzer, author of The Pope and MussoliniWriting about American Nazi sympathizers who rooted their rage in mainstream Catholic theology poses a remarkable challenge. Pluralist society already has a hard enough time confronting violent hatred underwritten by sincere religious faith; historians writing about such subjects face the second challenge of achieving empathy with their subjects without sacrificing moral opprobrium. Charles R. Gallagher meets both challenges with aplomb—and throws in some thrilling World War II spy stories to boot. Highly recommended. -- Rick Perlstein, author of ReaganlandWhen historians speak of Americans who supported Hitler’s Third Reich, they generally refer to Father Charles Coughlin or the German American Bund. In his excellently researched and rivetingly written book, Gallagher reminds us the danger was more widespread. A movement of far-right American Catholics not only fostered sympathy with Nazism but spread virulent anti-Semitism. The Nazis of Copley Square laid the groundwork for today’s Christian nationalism. When we hear those ideas expressed today, we are shocked. Gallagher demonstrates they have roots reaching back many decades. The danger was real then. And it is real today. -- Deborah E. Lipstadt, author of Antisemitism: Here and NowA virtuoso piece of historical detective work that dramatically enhances our understanding of right-wing (and Catholic) anti-Semitism and radicalism during the turbulent 1930s and 1940s. -- John T. McGreevy, author of American Jesuits and the World: How an Embattled Religious Order Made Modern Catholicism GlobalValuably excavates this buried past…One reason it is important to study the history of the Christian Front is that it elucidates the origins of the Christian right in the United States—roots that run deeper than the rise of Evangelical Protestants in the 1970s and 1980s or McCarthyism in the 1950s…[An] illuminating and compelling book. * DigBoston *Gallagher breaks new ground by diving deep into…the Christian Front’s activities in Boston…A great book that should be read by all. -- Joe Allen * CounterPunch *Extraordinarily well crafted and narrated…Gallagher has produced a masterful work in its analysis of the theological roots of an organisation that threatened great political and social harm. This book provides a timely, important reminder of the wider effects religious ideas can have in public life. -- David Mislin * Journal of Ecclesiastical History *

In his deeply probing and enormously informed book, Lett suggests that representation is both a theological keynote and a theological lever in Balthasar’s theology, which, if not systematic in a modern sense, nonetheless is always faithful to the matrix of doctrines and the interconnection of the excessive reality they intend. It most certainly is the best and most focused study of Balthasar’s soteriology that has yet appeared . . . [and is] one of the best books on Balthasar’s Christology. Most importantly—and it bears emphasizing—it is a book of deep theological thinking." —Cyril O'Regan, from the foreword“This book not only fills a significant gap in scholarship on Balthasar but also provides a nuanced and perhaps even provocative interpretation of Balthasar’s dramatic soteriology, challenging certain one-note readings that do not account for the broader context of Balthasar’s system.” —Jennifer Newsome Martin, author of Hans Urs von Balthasar and the Critical Appropriation of Russian Religious Thought * America Magazine *Table of ContentsAbbreviations Introduction Part 1. Book SynopsisTo mark the 40th anniversary of John Paul II's encyclical on human work, published in 1981, a group of globally-recognized scholars presents the critical aspects of this document and its purpose. These original essays revisit John Paul II's approach to work in post-modern society and reconnect the dignity of the working person to a pursuit of holiness. These authors convey that only when it is truly Christian can humanism accomplish the lofty ideals it indicates. This book is a timely contribution to the field of scholarship that focuses on Catholic Social Thought and is ideally suited for graduate studies and the reader interested in more serious questions in Christian theology. Book SynopsisThe Name of God is Mercy, Pope Francis' exploration on the universal theme of mercy, is a spiritual inspiration to both followers of Christianity and non-Christians around the world.Drawing on his own experience as a priest and shepherd, Pope Francis discusses mercy, a subject of central importance in his religious teaching and testimony, and in addition sums up other ideas – reconciliation, the closeness of God – that comprise the heart of his papacy. Written in conversation with Vatican expert and La Stampa journalist Andrea Tornielli, The Name of God is Mercy is directed at everyone, inside or outside of the Catholic Church, seeking meaning in life, a road to peace and reconciliation, or the healing of physical or spiritual wounds.Trade ReviewPope Francis's chatty tone, his repeated references to episodes in his own life and his clear, down-to-earth language, so rarely found in papal pronouncements, make The Name of God Is Mercy a pleasure to read. * The Guardian *Francis offers the most vivid glimpse yet of this thinking on the struggles facing the Church in the 21st Century * Sunday Telegraph *This gift for teaching - along with his inclusive vision of the world, and his warm, embracing manner - have been hallmarks of the pope's whirlwind tenure thus far in the Vatican, and they also inform his new book, The Name of God Is Mercy * The New York Times *What makes his book most moving is the way in which this man, without disrespecting his own privacy or offering false bromides of modesty (what Douthat derides as "ostentatious humility"), opens the sacred space of his conscience to explain how he came to center his ministry, and now his papacy, around mercy. * The New Yorker *Francis speaks succinctly-and with refreshing forthrightness. . . . He emphasizes moral sincerity over dogma, an understanding of the complexities of the world and individual experience over rigid doctrine. . . . The pope has an easy conversational style that moves effortlessly between folksy sayings and erudite allusions, between common-sense logic and impassioned philosophical insights -- Michiko Kakutani, The New York TimesAs he has done throughout his papacy, Pope Francis shows in this book a compelling way to present God's love anew to a skeptical world without denying the ancient teachings of faith. But now he is challenging the entire Church to trek a new way forward -- TimeFrancis enjoys sharing personal stories of God's grace and mercy in the lives of parishioners from his native Argentina, people he has known and who have recognized themselves as sinners -- The Washington PostPowerful . . . Francis's book signals a plea for a change of attitude on the part of the faithful and their pastors. . . . Bishops and priests will talk and quarrel over the text for months, even years to come. And that, perhaps, is what Francis intends -- Financial Times
