Book SynopsisThe term fundamentalism has its roots in specific forms of American Protestantism that arose around the turn of the twentieth century in reaction to liberalizing and modernizing trends within the church. In this book, Mark Massa argues that an analogously reactive, militant, and sectarian fundamentalist movement emerged within American Catholicism in the decades after World War II, for a similarly complex mix of theological and cultural reasons. In Catholic Fundamentalism in America Massa gives the first account of the Catholic form of the anti-modernist impulse. Massa recounts how Catholic fundamentalism has reacted both to the teachings of the Second Vatican Council and to the tensions of America''s pluralist, secular culture. Like their Protestant cousins, Catholic fundamentalists combine a sectarian understanding of religion with an aggressive anti-progressive stance. Their main enemies were not Protestants or secular Americans, but other Catholics who didn''t share their extreme views. Also like the Protestant fundamentalists, Catholic devotees of the fundamentalist impulse have sought (and found) political conservatives with whom to make common cause on a range of issues, such as the place of women in American culture, the value of pluralism within the Church and the larger culture, and the importance of cooperation with non-Catholics. Contemporary Catholic conservatives merge theological and political impulses into movements that punch above their weight within the community through their clever use of social media. Through seven portraits of individuals and movements that embody the Catholic fundamentalist impulse, Massa demonstrates how the Catholic Right, like its evangelical Protestant counterpart, has reacted to--and fought against--modern American culture.

Book SynopsisA wide-ranging collection of quotes from the new Pope's writings and speeches, revealing his opinions on the moral issues surrounding the Catholic Church today.Pope Francis won the hearts of Catholics all over the world when he was elected in March 2013, with his natural humility and commitment to putting those who are poor at the centre of his mission.Jorge Mario Bergoglio the 265th successor of St Peter and the first non-European Pope in over 1200 years has encouraged people to live simpler lives and shown the world a more compassionate face of Catholicism, bringing fresh hope for a renewal in the Church. In his own life, he has long demonstrated both his belief in simplicity and his concern for those who are poor, refusing to live in palatial accommodation during his tenure as a cardinal in Buenos Aires, riding the bus to work and even persuading the diocese to allow a group of poor missionaries to live in the official residence.Pope Francis in His Own Words' has been compiled to g

Book SynopsisThe reign of Mary Tudor has been remembered as an era of sterile repression, when a reactionary monarch launched a doomed attempt to reimpose Catholicism on an unwilling nation. This title argues that Mary's regime was neither inept nor backward looking.Trade Review"'Fires of Faith is a dazzling exercise in historical reappraisal, after which the reign of Mary Tudor will never look quite the same again.' Peter Marshall, Times Literary Supplement 'In this powerful, punchy book he argues that the Marian restoration of English Catholicism was much more than the rather low-profile and sometimes timid attempt to return to the past which even the recent revisionists have portrayed. No, says Duffy (and I must now agree), it was a full-blooded attempt to introduce into England the 'new' Catholicism of the fledgling Counter-Reformation... Once again, Eamon Duffy has changed the landscape of English Reformation history.' J.J. Scarisbridge, The Weekly Standard"

Book SynopsisThe Sunday Times Top Ten Bestseller Suzanne suffered five heart attacks and made it through open heart surgery. But even that pales in comparison to the horrors she faced as a young girl. Her childhood became the ‘stuff of nightmares’ after her father passed away and her mother, unable to get a job in Ireland, had to seek work in London. So ‘Mammy’ was forced into the heartbreaking decision to put Suzanne and her five siblings into church-run orphanages in Dublin while she worked away. It was just meant to be temporary. Her life soon became a daily struggle to avoid beatings with canes and rosary beads. Suzanne and the other children worked from dawn until midnight, living on disgusting scraps of food, while the nuns dined on fresh fruit, meat and cakes that the ‘orphans’ had cooked for them. Suzanne tried her best to shield her younger sisters from the terror of these hateful ‘women of God’. But it was only the beginning of their troubles… Eventually, their mother returned from London, after four years, with enough money to take her children out and the family was reunited. However, too scared to speak out, the children vowed to take the horrors they had experienced at the orphanages to their graves. What really happened behind those church doors? This is Suzanne's heartbreaking and touching story.Trade Review'A deeply powerful and harrowing memoir that will remain with you long after the final page.' * John Marrs, author of The One *'This heart wrenching story kept me riveted from start to finish.' * Kristin Chenoweth, Actress *'A riveting story told through the eyes of an innocent young girl who was still dealing with the repercussions of her grief and anger 50 years later. Suzanne’s bravery in speaking out against the evil she faced, is so powerful it will help many other victims.' * Molly Shannon, Actress *'Suzanne Walsh’s Vow of Silence is a beautifully written memoir of her and her siblings childhood experiences. From their early start as a loving family unit, through the heartache of grief, and trauma from abuse by those trusted to care for them. Suzanne’s story is one of courage, strength resilience and love. Honest, compelling, heartbreaking and inspiring, her words stay with you.' * Joanne Froggatt, Actress. *"Melissa should be so proud of her mum for standing up to the child abuse, to speak out and tell her heart-wrenching story. Suzanne’s bravery in speaking out against the evil she faced, will help so many other victims." * Molly Shannon, Actress *"This is wild. It’s almost hard to imagine places like this exist. I definitely appreciate the research that went into this and the exploration of such a dark topic." * Netgalley *"An honest and heartbreaking account of a loving Irish family separated by events beyond their control. Walsh writes about her youth with her loving family, especially her dear father, who has leukemia, leaving his wife and six children. Walsh's mother is forced to place her children in orphanages in Dublin, Ireland, and moves to London to find work to support her family. Walsh tells what she, her sisters, and brothers go through as they do their best to survive the conditions of hunger, malnutrition, beatings, and humiliation by the nuns. Somewhat repetitive at times, Walsh begins her story recounting her disdain and naming the nuns who were particularly brutal to the children in their care. She feels concerned and anguished when she thinks of how those children fared as adults after being traumatized in the orphanages. Walsh's accounts of her four years subjected to the ill-treatment of the nuns are historical and eye-opening. A sad piece of Irish history." * Netgalley *"Have faith in yourself A sad story of a family torn apart by the death of their father, and the financial inability of their mom to care for them, they spent years in an orphanage. The boys were sent to one orphanage with the brothers and the girls to an orphanage with the nuns. They were abused physically and mentally in these orphanages. I had to admire their love for each other, and how they not only looked out for each other, but helped look after the other orphans that needed help. They became very good at surviving. Because of the abuse and malnutrition they suffered under their care in the orphanage they suffered many problems later in life. It was sad that in a religious institution they were treated so badly. No child should ever be treated as these children were. I enjoyed reading their story and the ending was good. I would recommend this book." * Netgalley *"Emotional and moving account. This was a good, quick read. It has fairly brief chapters which moves it along nicely. It's the 1950s, and Suzy and her family live in Ireland. This is a balanced account, as the author first talks of her lovely childhood memories. Then very hard circumstances are to hit the family. Their mammy has no alternative but to look for work in London, to make some money so the family could be together again. For the time being, she leaves them to be looked after at an orphanage. Suzy was only 10 at the time. This is the second book of this type I have read, and I find it shocking that nuns; people who you would suppose to be pure and good, would treat children so terribly. An emotional, tragic story, well told." * Netgalley *"This is a heartbreaking story. This poor family went through a lot, the worst of it being the 4 years these children were in the care of orphanages. Through no fault of their own, after losing their father, their mother had a lot on her plate and no choice but to place them in these orphanages which she went to London for work. Mom was just sure these nuns would take very good care of her children. Unfortunately, there is a lot of hypocrisy in the world of religion and these children ended up suffering from abuse and neglect. For these 6 children to keep quiet about it so as to not put more worry on their mother, is such a tough thing to imagine." * Netgalley *"Suzanne Walsh is a genius story teller. The book was an effortless, emotional journey through the Walsh’s family history; I thoroughly enjoyed it and read it all in a day. The Walsh’s live in a working class suburb near Dublin, Ireland in the early 1950’s. The six close siblings are living a idyllic childhood until tragedy strikes and their beloved father dies. Their Mother does everything she can to keep the family together but nobody wants to employ a single mother of six, so has to leave the children in the care of the Catholic Church’s orphanages whilst she goes to find work in London. The neglect and abuse they suffered at the hands of the nuns is horrifying. The fact that so many of these children had no family made them perfect victims for the sadistic abusers as well as free labour for the church. The book will send you on a rollercoaster of emotions but it’s definitely a ride worth taking." * Netgalley *"A heartbreaking story of child abuse at the hands of people the children had been in the care of by a mother very much down on her luck. Suzanne and her 5 siblings went into the ' care ' of a Catholic orphanage , and as we have sadly learnt from the media this often , too often , does not lead into having a good childhood. This a touching , sad and horrific account of the terrible life she endured whilst there.. Due to the subject of the story I don't think you can say you enjoyed it , but I can say it was an insight into the life of a child that should never be allowed to happen again . I wish you well Suzanne." * Netgalley *"What a gut wrenching, very emotional read. Suzanne and her siblings had a good childhood. Until their entire world shattered with the passing of their dad. Her mammy, which is the best she could do with 6 kids. But them in an orphanage, where unbeknownst to her they were several abused. Some years later she’s saved enough to move her kids away. These poor babies having to keep secret the pain they each with through." * Netgalley *

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisEmeritus Pope Benedict commanded both adulation and unremitting criticism. To millions, he was a beacon of light in a turbulent modern world. In this second volume of Peter Seewald's authoritative biography, the story continues from the Second Vatican Council (19658) right up to his resignation in 2013. We see how Benedict was influenced by the Council and the ensuing political unrest all over Europe to move from a liberal perspective on the Church and the modern world to one that was profoundly conservative. Appointed in 1981 as prefect of the Congregation of Doctrine of the Faith, and quickly nicknamed God's Rottweiler', he proved to be intransigent on the controversial issues of abortion, contraception, gay rights and gay marriage. But elected Pope in 2005, his tenure of office was so riven with shocking revelations of controversy and scandal that it seemed that by the time of his resignation in 2013 he was incapable of handling the complexities of the Church in the modern world. Book SynopsisIreland has long been regarded as a ''land of saints and scholars''. Yet the Irish experience of Christianity has never been simple or uncomplicated. The Rise and Fall of Christian Ireland describes the emergence, long dominance, sudden division, and recent decline of Ireland''s most important religion, as a way of telling the history of the island and its peoples. Throughout its long history, Christianity in Ireland has lurched from crisis to crisis. Surviving the hostility of earlier religious cultures and the depredations of Vikings, evolving in the face of Gregorian reformation in the 11th and 12th centuries and more radical protestant renewal from the 16th century, Christianity has shaped in foundational ways how the Irish have understood themselves and their place in the world. And the Irish have shaped Christianity, too. Their churches have staffed some of the religion''s most important institutions and developed some of its most popular ideas. But the Irish church, like the islTrade ReviewGribben the historian dons the mantle of a prophet, a good reminder that historical reflection can and should lead to wise action. * Michael A.G. This is an eminently readable book, and the author has a page-turning clarity which too few academics possess. * Alf McCreary, Belfast Telegraph *Admirable and scholarly. * Mary Kenny, History Ireland *A book of remarkable ambition... The attempt to tell the whole story from Celtic times through to the astonishingly rapid secularisation of today is what makes this book so special and important. * David Chillingworth, Church Times *A broad, sweeping, readable and concise history of the interplay of religion, politics and society in Ireland from pre-Christian times until the present. * David Quinn, Catholic Herald *A readable and impressive work of scholarship...The book is thought-provoking and rich in personalities and comment, which encourages the reader to return to the text. * Thomas Morrissey SJ, Irish Catholic *I'd recommend [the book] strongly to anyone who wants to understand recent upheavals on our island. * Ruth Dudley Edwards, News Letter *This fine volume, by a distinguished historian, meets a long-standing need for an overview of Christianity in Ireland... the book is written in a very accessible style. * Raymond Blair, Evangelical Times *Crawford Gribben's sweeping history surveys Ireland's grand past - and its importance for Western Christianity. * Jeremiah Rood, Foreword Reviews *A remarkable read... For anyone who wants to consider the role of Christianity in the West, the test case of Ireland is as fascinating as it is instructive. * Professor D. G. Hart, New Horizons in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church *If ever there was a lesson of church history, it may be that whenever an earthly state claims to be Christendom, the church will become repressive and corrupt. Ireland has long been heralded as the "land of saints and scholars," and indeed its role in the spread of Christianity in northern Europe was significant. Gribben argues that any form of "Christian Ireland" has clearly ended in the twenty-first century. This book offers a solid survey for a general reading public, and although it cannot cover all topics, it has clearly used the latest research when assessing many significant turning points and debatable areas. * John B. Book SynopsisA revised and enlarged edition of the most powerful and polemic critique of the Anglo-Catholicism movement. This penetrating and highly readable study has established itself over the years as the standard text on the subject. Rising in the wake of the Oxford Movement, Anglo-Catholicism can be seen as a deliberate attempt to catholicise the Church of England and to make its doctrines and services similar to those of the Roman Catholic Church. Early followers were persecuted, but they became famous for their work and for breaking down the social divisions associated with the Church. The Anglo-Catholic Movement indelibly changed the ethos of the Established Church with the foundation of religious orders, overseas missions, theological colleges and public schools, promoting new social doctrines often associated with socialist ideas. Anglo-Catholicism traces the movement from the origins to the heyday in the 1920s and 1930s. It is the first study which analyses it from the sociological point of view. The book concentrates in the interwar period and the decline of the movement to the present time, showing now the ambiguities and tensions originated and the way they have been dealt with over the years. This revised edition also contains a new chapter examining the impact of women''s ordination to priesthood on the movement.Trade Review'The phenomenon of Anglo-Catholicism in the Church of England, and wider Anglican Communion, undoubtedly merits sociological as well as theological study, and this treatment goes some way towards addressing the former.' by N. Book SynopsisThe focal point of Pope Francis' Church is mercy: in the dialogue between human fragility and God's mercy the Church has to welcome and help everyone to find the 'good news' of Christian hope. As part of his revolutionary new vision for the Church, Francis calls on all believers to be 'full-time Christians' and not 'living-room Christians', and to struggle against the trappings of power, and the worship of money and careerism. Francis has spoken and written widely on these themes during his first year as Pope, and his thoughts are here collected for the first time, edited and abridged with full Vatican approval. The book is aimed at a broader readership, believers and non-believers, priests, religious, dedicated laypeople, and teachers.

Book SynopsisProfessor Rowland holds the St John Paul II (Research) Chair of Theology at the University of Notre Dame (Australia). She is a member of the International Theological Commission and the author of 6 books and over 100 academic publications in the fields of theology and political philosophy.Trade ReviewThe many experts who have contributed to this stimulating book amply demonstrate the richness of Pope Benedict XVI’s purpose in promulgating “Anglicanorum Coetibus”, not merely to provide a home from home for Anglicans crossing the Tiber, but even more fruitfully to bring back home “a treasure to be shared” by the entire Catholic Church. -- Guy Nicholls, University of Oxford, UKRowland has gathered up illustrious voices in a kind of hymn to the goodness of Anglican Patrimony in communion with the Holy See. Beautifully written, the book resonates with notes seeking a higher and more lovely faithfulness, grounded within that sacred homeliness of high Anglican worship and ordinary English piety. -- Nigel Zimmermann, University of Notre Dame, AustraliaIf you love the Catholic faith and have a hankering after English sensibilities, do yourself a favour and read this book. It is a highly creative compilation of investigations into what precisely is the English contribution to the faith via the Anglican patrimony. It is wide-ranging in examining the English cultural embodiment of Christianity from the time of Augustine’s arrival on the shores of Kent, to the rupture with the Reformation, and the ensuing preservation of a Catholic heritage fully tinged by the English sense of life. You will be informed, educated, entertained (for yes, there is whimsy), and moved by a re-discovery of the elements of Catholic faith that have always subsisted in the Anglican experience, which has finally found fruition in Anglicanorum Coetibus. -- Joseph Atkinson, John Paul II Institute, USATable of ContentsChapter 1: Professor Tracey Rowland – Holder of the John Paul II Research Chair of Theology, University of Notre Dame (Australia) Introduction to the Collection. Book SynopsisMonsignor Michael Nazir-Ali is director of the Oxford Centre for Training, Research, Advocacy and Dialogue, UK.Trade ReviewMichael Nazir-Ali draws on his own experience as a bishop in Pakistan and the UK, as Head of a major mission society, and as a theologian of immense experience of dialogue with other traditions and faiths. In so doing, he reflects on what is and has been characteristic of the English church tradition. The result is a wide canvas indeed in which insights and examples drawn from missiology, ethics, church history and inter-faith dialogue, liturgical development and sacramental theology, constitutional theory and cultural understanding all find a place. * Michael Langrish, Bishop of Exeter 2000-2013, UK *Father Michael writes as a member of the Ordinariate in the Catholic Church. His lived experience of Islam, as well as his familiarity with the situation of the English Churches in a rapidly secularising culture makes it possible for him to offer an authentic Catholic commentary that is both prescient and challenging. This volume reflects these qualities. * Father Alexander Sherbrooke, St Patrick’s Catholic Church, UK *Michael Nazir-Ali, one of 21st-century Christianity's noble spirits, makes the terms "evangelization" and "inculturation" come alive in this insightful study of the history of Christian England, which teaches valuable lessons about being a Church permanently in mission -- a Church in which everyone accepts the responsibilities of a missionary vocation and everywhere is mission territory. * George Weigel, Ethics and Public Policy Center, USA *As always, Michael Nazir-Ali writes clearly and engagingly. He has a gift for illustrating a big picture with detailed examples. He combines a passion for mission with concern for faith and order and for the moral/social implications of Christian discipleship - all within a realistic view of history and a hope that lies beyond history. The story of Ecclesia Anglicana is long and clearly unfinished; one pressing question for all who value the elusive concept of “Anglican patrimony” is how that patrimony can best be cherished and developed for future generations. In the light of the current fragmentation of the Anglican Communion, impaired communion within the Church of England itself and the innovation of the Ordinariates perhaps we might hope for a second edition in a few years’ time. * John Hind, Bishop emeritus of Chichester, UK *Table of ContentsIntroduction Why This Book Was Written and What Is in It? As global trade expanded, this land of reputedly boundless wealth, pale-faced women, and indecipherable tongues began to feed the fantasies of European merchants and adventurers. Confronting enormous challenges, the Italian priest Matteo Ricci and a tiny handful of learned companions gained permission from the notoriously xenophobic Wanli emperor to settle in the fabled Forbidden City.Living among eunuchs and mandarins, wearing the clothes of Confucian scholars, Ricci and his associates strove to master the language and culture of their hosts. Not the least of these was his resignation from office in February 2013, the first papal resignation in 500 years. But who was Joseph Ratzinger? In this definitive biography, based on meticulous historical research and many hours of taped interviews with his subject, Peter Seewald shows the exceptional circumstances in which the exceptionally talented son of a Bavarian policeman became the first German pope for 950 years. In this first volume, covering the years 19271965, we witness Joseph Ratzinger's early days, living above his father's police station. Ratzinger came to adulthood through the years of National Socialism. Though hostile to the rise of Hitler, his family knew well about Dachau and Ratzinger himself was conscripted into the Hitler Youth. From the first homily delivered as soon as he became pope to the last public hearing, these speeches reveal the depth of his theological reflection in simple language that has nourished the faith of millions.Since Pope Benedict XVI died he has had a remarkably good press. Indeed many have argued that there is a natural evolution between Pope Benedicts mission and that of his successor Pope Francis.Dubbed and dismissed by many as an unrepentant traditionalist, we now see a man of profound intelligence and wisdom on matters relating not just to religion but to what is not termed ''The Common Good''. It is thus more important to read these texts carefully and with measure and not in garbled versions dreamt up by the Press. Book SynopsisThe Catholic Church seems to be in serious crisis disfigured by scandals, divided by theological, cultural and political differences, retreating institutionally in many places, judged irrelevant by a culture that believes it has outgrown this kind of religious faith.Yet the number of practising Catholics increases each year, a growing membership that seeks to be well grounded spiritually, intellectually and pastorally. Many younger people are curious to know and experience traditional and historical realities. Thus, the need for an informed and reflective restatement of The Spirit of Catholicism has never been more urgent. In this clear and intelligible book, Vivian Boland presents the substance of Catholic belief and life, what the res catholica believes itself essentially to be. From its basis in the Bible, learning from key figures of Christian history, and in the full light of Pope Francis's missionary ethos, this account of Catholicism casts new light on familiar teachings, the treasure carried by this earthen vessel'.Neither apologetic nor controversial, it shows how embodiment is at the heart of Catholicism Christ, Mary, sacraments, a historical institution. It shows how this body is structured and develops into a form of life marked by a special kind of fraternity and resulting in a particular presence in human history and society.Catholic teachings about Mary and the Eucharist, about hierarchy and authority, about spiritual life and pastoral care, about holiness and love, are presented in their deepest and fullest context: Christ as the Son of God and head of humanity, the Holy Spirit giving energy and new life, and the Father, the great love that awaits us.Trade ReviewOverall, this book is a delight. Boland clearly enjoys his subject and takes great pleasure in handing on his knowledge and understanding of the Church. […] A joy to read. […] I hugely enjoyed this book, which is at once erudite and accessible, and offers a succinct yet lucid account of the Church’s self-understanding both now and throughout history.[…] It will be a pleasurable and informative read for all. * The Tablet *Dominican Father Vivian Boland…brings the expertise of a deft and thorough theologian to the topic. This book embodies the scriptural, sacramental and spiritual energy for both participation and mission. * The Furrow *[The Spirit of Catholicism] is a most remarkably rich progression of theological thinking, subject after subject dealt with in depth and precision, with awareness of the tradition as well as what is being thought about it in the contemporary work of theologians. And all of it being bound together with the thread of Catholicism. ... [Boland] has given us what I would like to call a positive Summa of all that is Catholic in the work of Christ and the Spirit in God’s world. -- Liam Walsh OP, Vice-rector emeritus, University of Fribourg‘This wonderful volume may be tough going for those looking for a basic introduction to Catholicism. But for those who have some familiarity with Catholicism as well as those looking to deepen their knowledge and welcome fresh insights, Boland’s Spirit of Catholicism is to be highly recommended without hesitation or reservation. * Doctrine & Life *Table of ContentsIntroduction Part One 1 A People of God? John Murray Press Newman: The Heart of Holiness

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisNewman: The Heart of Holiness looks at the model of holiness Newman offers us to us all, on the occasion of his canonisation, a moment the Church recognises officially that Newman offers a model of holiness that is relevant for the Universal Church.Newman himself, in fact, said, 'I have nothing of the saint about me'. The Church, however, has decided otherwise and in October this year Blessed John Henry Newman, poet, tractarian, academic, former Anglican, Catholic convert and Cardinal will be canonised by Pope Francis. In this book, Roderick Strange brings his own lifetime of learning and studying of Newman together with newer material that has come to light since the beatification to offer a portrait of Newman's interior life. That is, his intimacy with God and his understanding of Christ, which led him to rejoice in the gift of the Eucharist, and he explores how Newman's interior life had its outworking in his pastoral ministry serving others. This understanding of Newman's spirituality and legacy, suggests the author, might offer us an apologia for our own times, one in which we realise the connection between the sacred and the secular, one in which our faith can sustain us through the inevitable troubles of life, and in which we can cultivate a perceptiveness peculiar to faith, a perceptiveness that helps us recognise the gifts of the Spirit we have received as people who 'watch for Christ'.This book, therefore, is an attempt to peel back the layers of Newman's spirituality so as to explore respectfully the heart of his holiness.Trade ReviewI have not been unsympathetic to Newman since I first discovered him in my late teens. But, for a long time now (possibly all the 32 years I have served as a priest in the CofE) I have been resistant, knowing quite a lot about him, but appreciating him, as it were, at a distance. Your book has changed all that, and enabled me to open the door wide; and for that I'm immensely grateful. Like a two-edged sword slipping in between soul and spirit, it spoke to me not just because you've written it so fluently, but because I've seen the whole man for the first time, the whole heart of the man, and felt what anchored him, and how deep over the years that anchor sank. -- Bishop Jonathan GoodallRoderick Strange has gift for writing about complex matters in a graceful and accessible way. * Archbishop of Mark Coleridge, Archbishop of Brisbane *'His text flows effortlessly and its message is conveyed with clarity, very much in the way that Newman recommendedfor preachers.' -- Stella Fletcher * TLS *Stunning writing . . . simple and accessible prose that left me wanting more. * Fr John Chalmers, Priest and scholar of the Archdiocese of Brisbane *

Book SynopsisThe global pandemic has levied a heavy toll on humanity, but in its wake appears a great opportunity. Amidst what he calls a crisis of modernity, Giulio Maspero points to a phenomenon that can be seen in plain sight. "The absence of personal relationships highlighted by the health crisis exposes the consequences of the modern matrix, which, having lost its Christian element, now risks transforming itself into a digital matrix, substantially configuring itself as a technognosis." Without Trinitarian framework ancient and new idols emerge, as the Covid-19 tragedies have shown. Yet post-pandemic must be a moment of clarity and realism, as we can see how necessary it is that humanity place itself in relation to something beyond. The post-modern journey, however, must be in the spirit of Christian humanism or else any so-called progress will no longer be unable to speak authentically of our humanity. That is to say, the relational dimension of human life will be erased right along with the other ills that plague our earth.

Book SynopsisA Jesuit priest’s memoir about recovering his memory of clerical abuse as a child In October 2021, the Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church released its report detailing consistent disregard of survivors and the callous and horrifying “lack of outrage” from bishops and other Catholic leaders. What this report does not tell is the story of the priests who themselves are survivors of clerical abuse and their struggles. At the age of forty-eight, Patrick C. Goujon, SJ, suddenly remembered what a priest had done to him, for four long years, beginning when he was seven years of age. Locked in denial for almost forty years, he finally spoke out. He thought he could then heal. Yet his whole life started falling apart. He questioned why his memory had been suppressed for such a long time. And he asked himself: How could I have chosen to become a priest myself? In Precarious, he tells the story of how he learned to survive the shock of this revelation and to live as a believer. His story is a healing journey and a path to finding support in spirituality to recover from child abuse.Table of ContentsAcknowledgmentsForeword Precarious: A Survivor of Clerical Abuse Remembers About the AuthorAbout the Translator

All over the world, the wealthy's increasing political power is biasing policy away from the public interest and toward the financial interests of the rich. At the same time, many countries are facing financial fragility and diminished well-being. On top of it all, the global economy, driven by fossil fuels, has proven to be a collective act of self-sabotage with the poor on the front lines. In a new foreword to his book, Anthony M. Annett examines the Biden administration's economic policies and discusses reactions to Cathonomics. A growing chorus of economists and politicians is demanding a new paradigm to create a global economy that seeks the common good. In Cathonomics, Annett unites insights in economics with those from theology, philosophy, climate science, and psychology, exposing the failures of neoliberalism while offering us a new model root
