Whilst some scholars argue that violence is innate to (monotheistic) religion or community building, others claim that violence 'in the name of God' is a reaction to secularization, a form of political violence or a myth that legitimates repression by secular states. Battles over Belief. Catholics and Violence in the 19th Century offers a much-needed historical perspective on this social science literature as it provides the first comprehensive overview of the changing interplay of faith and violence during the period spanning the French Revolution and First World War. Chapters probe violent acts linked to inner-Catholic, Catholic-secular and interreligious conflict, but also demonstrate the importance of rhetoric and symbolics for nurturing and framing violence across the nineteenth century world. Of special interest is the role of agency. Thus, the book reveals the motives for violence but also its legitimation and interpretation. It furthermore shows the intricate ways in which differences over religion collided with secular differences. By demonstrating that religion remained a powerful trigger for violence beyond the French Revolution, Battles over Belief shows that the relationship between religion and violence, both in the nineteenth century and more generally, is more complex than scholars have suggested.

Book SynopsisText in German. The Austro-Hungarian Littoral was an ethnically and linguistically heterogeneous but predominantly Catholic region at the periphery of the late Habsburg monarchy. The book examines whether and how ethnic-linguistic diversities could lead to conflicts within the local Catholic Church, and it concludes that nationalism was perceived as a foreign influence at the local level. The cases from the rural area were told in the cities as clear examples of "nationality conflicts". But the local level had much more complicated differences and interests than all conflict actors could have been assigned to one "nationality". By using a large number of sources, the work shows the complexity of social interests within the local Catholic Church in the Upper Adriatic region: The conflict actors (peasants and priests) were primarily characterized by their socially marginalized position.

In the creeds of the early church catholicity is confessed as characteristic for the church. This means that the church cannot exist without catholicity. What does this qualification mean? In this study the author listens to the understanding of the concept of catholicity in the theology of Ignatius, Cyprian, Cyril, Augustine and Vincent. In the second part of the book some representatives of the reformed tradition are analyzed, namely John Calvin, James Ussher, John Owen, Herman Bavinck and Gerrit Berkouwer. This analysis leads to a comparison between the early church and the reformed tradition. Listening to theologians from the early church and the reformed tradition, Van Vlastuin presents an up-to-date concept of the catholicity of the church which clarifies among others that the visibility of the church belongs to the essence of Christ's body, that practicing the catholicity of the church is necessary against denominationalism and party formation, that loss of catholicity leads to spiritual and theological impoverishment, that the understanding of catholicity implies also orthodoxy with consequences for the interpretation of 'semper reformanda' and that the consciousness of catholicity is related to the citizenship of two worlds.
