    5 in stock

Book SynopsisWithout an appropriate spiritual care model, it can be difficult to discuss existential questions about death and dying with people who are confronted with life-threatening or incurable diseases. This book offers a simple framework for interpreting existential questions with patients and helping them to cope in end-of-life situations, with illustrative examples from practice.Building on the medieval Ars moriendi tradition, the author introduces a contemporary art of dying model. It shows how to discuss existential questions in a post-Christian context, without moralising death or telling people how they should feel. Written in a straightforward manner, this is a helpful resource for chaplains and clergy, and those with no formal spiritual training, including counsellors, doctors, nurses, allied healthcare workers and other professionals who come into contact with patients in hospitals and hospices.Trade ReviewThis exceptional book is like the diamond of Leget's Ars moriendi model, shining light on an area of practice that has been in the shadows for too long. It is full of kind, gentle and wise considerations that will help to illuminate the many faces and meanings of death. -- Prof Rod MacLeod MNZM, Conjoint Professor in Palliative Care, University of SydneyDr. Leget skillfully integrates his well-honed clinical sense with his in-depth understanding of some of the great thinkers of history to craft an approach to dying - and living - which respects both the uniqueness of each person and the wisdom of the ages. Bravo! -- Rev. George Handzo, HealthCare Chaplaincy Network, USAThere are many books on the market today which address issues of death and dying in society. This new book by Carlo Leget is more than just another addition to that literature. Expertly grounded in an academic theological and philosophical discourse, Professor Leget guides the reader through a contemporary reading of the medieval Ars moriendi, blending the wisdom of the past with a real-world understanding of the present. As a palliative care academic and practitioner, the crafting of this book, using evidence from the clinical setting, offers a reflection for the clinician and student on the complex dimensions of living and dying that they face on a daily basis. The 'inner space' conceptual framework speaks to a yearning in our world today. This book helps to imagine how we might find it. -- Philip Larkin, Professor of Clinical Nursing (Palliative Care), University College Dublin and Our Lady’s Hospice and Care Services, Dublin, IrelandSpiritual and existential issues are highly prevalent in patients with serious and/or life-threatening illnesses. All members of the care team need to be able to address these issues in a way that is compassionate but also clinically relevant. Leget's Art of Living, Art of Dying offers a simple framework for interpreting spiritual and existential questions with patients and helping them to cope with their suffering. Building on the medieval Ars moriendi tradition, the author introduces a contemporary art of dying model, which demonstrates through case-based examples how members of the care team can discuss existential and spiritual questions in a respectful and non-judgemental way and in the context of a patient's health and wellbeing. I recommend this book not only for chaplains and clergy, but also for others on the healthcare team, including counsellors, doctors, nurses, allied healthcare workers and other professionals who come into contact with patients in hospitals and hospices. -- Christina Puchalski, MD, FACP, FAAHPM, Professor of Medicine, Director of the George Washington Institute for Spirituality and Health, George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, USATable of ContentsPreface. 1. • Holy War: The Untold Story of Catholic Italy's

C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd Holy War: The Untold Story of Catholic Italy's

Book SynopsisA Foreign Affairs Best Book of 2022 In 1935, Fascist Italy invaded the sovereign state of Ethiopia--a war of conquest that triggered a chain of events culminating in the Second World War. In this stunning and highly original tale of two Churches, historian Ian Campbell brings a whole new perspective to the story, revealing that bishops of the Italian Catholic Church facilitated the invasion by sanctifying it as a crusade against the world's second-oldest national Church. Cardinals and archbishops rallied the support of Catholic Italy for Il Duce's invading armies by denouncing Ethiopian Christians as heretics and schismatics, and announcing that the onslaught was an assignment from God. Campbell marshalls evidence from three decades of research to expose the martyrdom of thousands of clergy of the venerable Ethiopian Church, the burning and looting of hundreds of Ethiopia's ancient monasteries and churches, and the instigation and arming of a jihad against Ethiopian Christendom, the likes of which had not been seen since the Middle Ages. Finally, Holy War traces how, after Italy's surrender to the Allies, the horrors of this pogrom were swept under the carpet of history, and the leading culprits put on the road to sainthood.Trade Review'Three cheers for Holy War [which] has turned the caring Italian Army myth upside down and inside out in what is the perfect antidote to Louis de Bernieres’ Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. […] Holy War is the ‘go for’ book if you want to learn as much as you need to know about an invasion that helped shape the rest of the 1930s, a paving stone towards World War in 1939.' -- ColdType

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisFor lovers of the often dark and troubled poetry of Louis MacNeice, his father is a reassuring presence: solid, sober, pious yet tolerant, a Church of Ireland clergyman who was not afraid to reject the Ulster Covenant of 1912, denounce sectarianism, and even espouse Irish nationalism. This book originated in the discovery of one inconvenient fact. Frederick MacNeice (1866–1942) was not a Home Ruler but an all-Ireland Unionist, who for many years was an enthusiastic Orangeman in Dublin and then Ulster. In later life, especially as Bishop of Down after 1934, he set aside these connections in order to pursue intercommunal peace and tolerance in Belfast and beyond. Louis colluded with his father in reinterpreting his earlier career, as part of a process of personal reconciliation which profoundly affected his later poetry and autobiographical writings. The relationship between father and son is discussed in two chapters, and several well-known poems are reinterpreted in the light of fresh evidence. Above all, this is the biography of a visionary who never despaired of spreading salvation through the often derided Church of Ireland. Using unfamiliar archives and local newspapes as well as the writings of both father and son, this book reconstructs the disparate worlds in which Frederick MacNeice lived and worked. It also explores his muted responses to the suffering of his parents and siblings, the early death of his deeply depressed first wife, the benefits resulting from his second marriage and its consequences for his children. The figure that emerges is complex, guarded, astute, and remarkably effective in using religion to spread enlightenment. His life demonstrates that salvation deserves to be taken seriously as a motive force in modern Irish history.

Book SynopsisThe Strangled Impulse follows a young curate uprooted from a comfortable parish to serve the pastoral needs of working-class North Dublin. Set against the backdrop of the Church's dwindling influence in 1970s Ireland and an increased scrutiny of priests' personal lives, this is the story of Father O'Neill's battles between the demands of his vocation and his own desires. His loneliness leads him to an attractive yet wounded woman, and together they find a solace they once thought impossible. As O'Neill struggles with the promises he made on ordination day, their newfound intimacy threatens to destro them both.William King's daring first novel offers an insight into the conflicted, political, brotherly world of the priesthood. Re-issued for the first time since its publication in 1997, it is augmented with an afterword by the author reflecting on his work.Trade ReviewPraise for Leaving Ardglass 'King offers a richly textured and deeply felt portrait of a society in flux and of individuals ensnared in their fallible humanity and helpless in the face of time. The dubious privilege of moral judgment is left to the reader in this outstanding novel.' - John Boland, Irish Independent 'A finely written and brave book that throws up uncomfortable truths and interesting parallels between hidden worlds, driven by ambitious men determined to survive.' - Dermot Bolger, The Sunday Business Post
