Book SynopsisThe coach – distinguished from the bus by its use for longer-haul and more comfortable trips – has a long and august history. Its origins lie in the charabanc, a long open-topped vehicle used to transport passengers on works outings and pleasure excursions. Over time, coaches came to be enclosed and fitted with more comfortable seating and higher-quality bodywork than the charabancs and the buses used on shorter routes. By the 1960s and 1970s on-board toilets began to be fitted, and despite a decline due to private car ownership, coach travel remains popular, with Wi-Fi, electric sockets and even video screens now built in. This colourful introduction explains the development of motor coach design and the main coach manufacturers, models and operators, offering a fascinating insight into the history of the nation’s most popular vehicles.Trade ReviewAn excellent, well-illustrated and very comprehensive yet compact book that enlightened me to many aspects of coaches and coach travel through the years. I enjoyed reading every page. -- Kim Henson * Wheels-Alive *Table of ContentsFrom Charabanc to Express Coach Luxury Travel: the 1930s Wartime and Austerity: The 1940s and 1950s Winds of Change: The 1960s and 1970s Modern Times Further Reading Places to Visit Index

Book SynopsisIn 1977 the US government began to loosen regulations on the tightly controlled trucking industry, expecting that increased competition would drive down companies'' shipping costs. In this provocative new book Michael H. Belzer takes a close look at trucking deregulation, discussing its effects on the industry in particular and the unintended consequences of deregulation in general. He makes the case that government still has a role to play in ameliorating the hardship caused by competition while retaining its benefits.Trade ReviewIs low pay in the trucking industry making the nation's roads unsafe ? With the U.S. economy booming and the demand for drivers mounting, why haven't working conditions for truckers improved? This book argues that trucking embodies the dark side of the new economy. * Sweatshops on Wheels, U.S. News and World Report *Table of Contents1: A New Look at Competitive Forces 2: Two Decades of Decline 3: The Road From Institutional to Market Regulation 4: An Industry Transformed 5: Collective Bargaining Still Makes a Difference 6: Labor Market Failure and the Role of Institutions 7: What if the Rest of the World Looked Like Trucking 8: Deregulation as Public Policy: Competition's Winners and Losers

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book follows the history and development of Brian Harris Transport Limited, the original red, green, and yellow liveried lorries that made the trek between Devon and Scotland at regular intervals for over fifty years. In 1946, Brian's father, Jerry, and Sam Miners formed Harris & Miners; with their fleet of two Ford trucks and one Commertipper, these two men took on the ultimate haulage challenge of the time: road vs. train. The outcome was that Harris & Miners were offered a contract to haul 'Devon Grate' Candy fire surrounds to Glasgow in 1947. Young Brian Harris began driving for his father in an Albion Chieftain in 1960. When Jerry Harris passed, Brian bought out the Miners family and the company became Brian Harris Transport Limited. With his fleet of ERF lorries fitted with Gardner engines, Brian set about running the company in a way only understood by him. Over the course of its existence, the company utilized a vast quantity of magnificent machines, including the first ERF 'A' series in that area, the Leyland Roadtrain and one Leyland DAF. Brian Harris died in April 2012 and his funeral was attended by over 600 people from all over the UK. This new edition gives an update to the events that have taken place since the second edition was published in 2007, including the eulogy given by the author at the funeral, as well as 82 previously unpublished photographs. • America's First Interstate: The National Road,

Kent State University Press America's First Interstate: The National Road,

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe story of America's first government-sponsored highway. The National Road was the first major improved highway in the United States built by the federal government. Built between 1811 and 1837, this 620-mile road connected the Potomac and Ohio Rivers and was the main avenue to the West. Roger Pickenpaugh's comprehensive account is based on detailed archival research into documents that few scholars have examined, including sources from the National Archives, and details the promotion, construction, and use of this crucially important thoroughfare.America's First Interstate looks at the road from the perspective of westward expansion, stagecoach travel, freight hauling, livestock herding, and politics of construction as the project goes through changing presidential administrations. Pickenpaugh also describes how states assumed control of the road once the US government chose to abandon it, including the charging of tolls. His data-mining approach—revealing technical details, contracting procedures, lawsuits, charges and countercharges, local accounts of travel, and services along the road—provides a wealth of information for scholars to more critically consider the cultural and historical context of the Road's construction and use. While most of America's First Interstate covers the early days during the era of stagecoach and wagon traffic, the story continues to the decline of the road as railroads became prominent, its rebirth as US Route 40 during the automobile age, and its status in the present day.Trade ReviewRoger Pickenpaugh's new study of the National Road gathers into one highly readable volume a terrific wealth of information and detail about this first national "intern improvement" project. In our rush to appreciate canals and railroads, historians easily ignore the prosaic business of carving out roads through wild country, quite literally over hills and dales, through swamps and rocky passes. Working with pick and shovel and horse-drawn scrapers, breaking stone by hand to dress the roadways, these early civil engineers truly paved the way for the settler conquest of America's antebellum frontier. Deeply researched in archival sources, this volume fills a serious gap in our literature about early American highways." — John L. Larson, author of Laid Waste! The Culture of Exploitation in Early America "This will now be the go-to text for anyone wishing to learn about the long history of the nation's first major highway. But it is more than that. Pickenpaugh's extensive primary research gives us fascinating anecdotes and brings fresh insight into Jeffersonian and Jacksonian politics and the familiar battles over federalism, as presidents, legislators, entrepreneurs, and workers debated and constructed a 620-mile road that people still travel today." — Lindsay Schakenbach Regele, author of Manufacturing Advantage: War, the State, and the Origins of American Industry, 1776–1848
