Lexington Books Motor Vehicles, the Environment, and the Human
Book SynopsisThe world now has more than a billion motor vehicles, and this number continues to increase as developing countries imitate developed societies in their adoption of the culture of automobility. This book explores the political ecology of motor vehicles in an era of growing social disparities and environmental crises, the latter of which are most manifest in anthropogenic climate change to which motor vehicles constitute a major contributor. A political ecological perspective recognizes that motor vehicles, perhaps more than any other machine, embody the social, structural, cultural, and environmental contradictions of the capitalist world system. In addition to highlighting many of the environmental, social, and health, environmental consequences of humanity’s increasing reliance on motor vehicles, particularly private automobiles, this book argues that ultimately we need as a species to move beyond motor vehicles as much as possible but that such an effort will have be part and parcel of creating an alternative world system based on social justice, democratic processes, environmental sustainability, and a safe climate, one termed democratic eco-socialism.Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1 – The Political Economy of Motor Vehicles Chapter 2 – Cultural Tropes Associated with Motor Vehicles Chapter 3 – The Political Ecological Impact of Motor Vehicles on Settlement Patterns Chapter 4 – The Impact of Motor Vehicles on the Natural Environment Chapter 5 – The Political Ecological Impact of Motor Vehicles on Health Chapter 6 – Case Studies of Motor Vehicles in Various Places Chapter 7 – Beyond the Automobile Motor Vehicle Chapter 8 – Creating a Sustainable Transportation System within the Context of an Alternative World System References About the Author

In addition to highlighting many of the environmental, social, and health, environmental consequences of humanity’s increasing reliance on motor vehicles, particularly private automobiles, this book argues that ultimately we need as a species to move beyond motor vehicles as much as possible but that such an effort will have be part and parcel of creating an alternative world system based on social justice, democratic processes, environmental sustainability, and a safe climate, one termed democratic eco-socialism. Trade ReviewBaer (Univ. of Melbourne) focuses on the political ecology of motor vehicles in the context of global capitalism. Recognizing that continued and increasing dependence on cars, trucks, and other such vehicles contributes enormously to climate change, health problems, and social inequality, he marshals large quantities of data to demonstrate this negative impact. Much of Baer's presentation is devoted to the stance that "automobility" is unsustainable, even in the short run, and that reformist solutions such as fuel efficiency, safety regulations, and government planning are being outpaced by the worldwide growth of auto use. In addition, he provides case studies from Germany, Australia, Brazil, and Cuba to examine the differential impact globally. . . In the final chapter, he presents an abbreviated view of his solution to the dilemma, one that reaches well beyond the automobile, and advocates what he calls “eco-socialism.” Dense but useful, this volume should be added to transportation and environmental collections. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals. * Choice Reviews *This work serves as a useful guide to how humanity arrived at its current situation of automobile dependence and sketches out many of the reasons why we will need to transcend it. * Anthropology in Action *Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1 – The Political Economy of Motor Vehicles Chapter 2 – Cultural Tropes Associated with Motor Vehicles Chapter 3 – The Political Ecological Impact of Motor Vehicles on Settlement Patterns Chapter 4 – The Impact of Motor Vehicles on the Natural Environment Chapter 5 – The Political Ecological Impact of Motor Vehicles on Health Chapter 6 – Case Studies of Motor Vehicles in Various Places Chapter 7 – Beyond the Automobile Motor VehicleChapter 8 – Creating a Sustainable Transportation System within the Context of an Alternative World System ReferencesAbout the Author

Key Publishing Ltd London Bus Routes One by One: 101–200
Book SynopsisFollowing on from London Bus Routes One By One: 1-100, this volume takes a look at the next hundred routes in Transport for London's spectrum, from 101 to 200. Spread out across the city and with a wealth of bus types from different operators, these busy services are caught amid 2021's gradual changeover from diesel and hybrid buses to pure electric and hydrogen operation. All the routes have been subject to considerable change over the years they have been in existence, from extensions and re-routings to withdrawals and re-use of the same number, and later to operator changes in accordance with competitive tendering. Illustrated with over 180 up-to-date colour photographs, this volume continues to build a snapshot of the fascinating modern London bus scene.

Key Publishing Ltd British Sports Cars
Book SynopsisBritain has been responsible for some of the greatest and most varied sports cars ever built - the Blower' Bentleys of the 1920s, diminutive MGs of the 1930s, glamorous Jaguar E-types and Aston Martin DB5s of the 1960s, and beyond that the jaw-dropping Lotuses and McLarens of more recent times. This book charts the rich history of the UK's most magnificent high-performance machines, from their primitive, pioneering days through today's technologically advanced modern sports cars. Taking in some of the most admired and sought after cars ever created, it aims to show how, over nearly 140 years, these exciting, and sometimes extraordinary, vehicles developed. The author explores how speeds have risen, handling has been enhanced, styles have evolved and sophistication has increased. Illustrated with over 180 pictures, this fascinating story of the ups and downs of the world's love affair with Britain's sports cars is almost as dramatic and dynamic as the machines themselves.

Key Publishing Ltd Low-Floor Double-Deckers
Book SynopsisIn just under 25 years, double-deck buses in the UK have undergone a transformation. Every double-decker in normal service in the UK today is a low-floor bus offering easy access to everyone. This book traces the story of the UK's low-floor double-deckers, from the first tentative steps to the widespread adoption of this layout and the moves from diesel buses to diesel-electric hybrids, to gas, electric and even hydrogen buses built for bus companies of all sizes. It covers the London operators that initially drove the low-floor revolution, along with the major groups, the remaining local authority fleets and a range of enterprising independents that operate them. Where once every double-decker for service in the UK was built in the UK, today many chassis come from mainland Europe and, increasingly, from manufacturers based in other and more distant parts of the world - and UK builders have gained an important foothold in Europe, North America, and the Far East as well. The story is told for the first time, on a model-by-model basis, supported by many unseen colour images, which show the buses in use throughout the UK.

Key Publishing Ltd London Bus Routes One by One: 201-300
Book SynopsisFollowing on from London Bus Routes One By One: 1-100 and London Bus Routes One By One: 101-200, this third volume in the series explores what used to be the old London Transport's highest-numbered block of routes. These numbers were once reserved for single-deck services, but the weight of post-war expansion soon filled in the sequence. As in previous volumes, a potted history of each route is accompanied by a list of points served and one or two pictures of the kind of bus that can be found in service today. The pace of tendering and Transport for London's imperative towards emissions-free propulsion has meant increasingly rapid turnover of bus models, which are expected to last the length of two full-term contracts of seven years before replacement. Illustrated with over 190 color photographs, this volume represents an up-to-date snapshot of the fascinating modern London bus scene as it stands in autumn 2021.

The History Press Ltd When the Wheels Come Off: More Confessions of a
Book SynopsisBrian Cunningham’s popular first book, Under the Bonnet, was a colourful and humorous collection of memories of his time as a car mechanic in the 1970s and ‘80s. When he wrote it, he was sure he had put everything of interest down, but it turns out there were quite a few escapades he’d forgotten to mention. Time, then, for part two . . .When the Wheels Come Off is a joyous return, covering what he missed first time round: cars fixed and some broken, fads and crazes, crashes and scrapes and near misses, evolutionary dead-ends in technology, underhanded practices and downright skulduggery, run-ins with management, the tools used, the cars ‘stolen’ and scrapyards visited. A lively and engaging trip back to the workshop.

David & Charles Mercedes-Benz 190: all 190 models (W201 series)
Book SynopsisThe 190 (W 201) was a landmark car for Mercedes-Benz: the predecessor to today's C-Class models, it was the company's first compact saloon (sedan) and combined advanced engineering with a new direction in body styling, later followed by the W124 and R129 series. Engines available included robust petrol and diesel `fours', as well as a silky `straight-six'. The sporting 190 E 2.3-16 and 2.5-16 models, initially developed with Cosworth, took Mercedes to new levels of performance. Altogether, nearly 1.9 million cars were produced, and today the 190 is an increasingly sought-after modern classic. This guide will help you learn about the differences between models, and what to look for when buying. What are the true running costs, and what issues - with the mechanicals, body or interior - should you be wary of? Is a restoration worth considering? This handy guide will take you step-by-step through the process of finding and evaluating a good 190 and making a successful purchase. Essential data and information about clubs and specialists will help you look after and enjoy your 190.Trade ReviewThe vast disparity in prices between a mint 190 and a rough one reveals how important it is to buy well, so this latest addition to the Essential Buyer's Guide series is welcome. It is a must to pop in the packet when you view a potential purchase. - Classic & Sports Car. David & Charles The Lea-Francis Story
Book SynopsisFounded in 1895 under the aegis of R.H. Lea, the company originally built cycles and motorcycles but, by the 1920s, was established as a manufacturer of high quality sporting cars. From the 1930s to the 1960s, Lea-Francis specialized in medium-sized cars built with care and the best quality components. Successful in motorsports, "Leaf" was an innovative company, but a lack of regard for good business principles led to fluctuating fortunes throughout the company's long life. This text tells the story of the firm.Trade ReviewBarrie Price's comprehensive account of Lea-Francis ultimately presents a very accurate and realistic portrait of a car manufacturer that traded more on its racing prowess than its manufacturing competence. This is a fascinating insight into a famous marque with exceptional depth and a human touch.- Classic Car Weekly

Historic England England's Motoring Heritage from the Air
Book SynopsisThe arrival of aerial photography came at a particularly significant moment in terms of the visual appearance of England. This selection of photographs makes use of the Aerofilms collection, acquired by English Heritage in 2007 and subsequently digitised and made available on the Britain from Above website. When Aerofilms fliers first went up in the skies in 1919, they captured a country that, with the obvious exception of some large scale structures such as aircraft hangers and munitions factories, had more or less been preserved in aspic in 1914. What we are looking at in many of the earliest photographs in this book is essentially Edwardian England, with towns and villages generally quite compact, with fields reaching almost up to the High Streets in many cases, and little sign of the sprawl that was to engulf them in the 1920s and 30s. The streets of many towns, especially the seaside resorts that provided the aerial photographers with many of their earliest subjects, have an orderly, almost pristine appearance to them, with the Victorian and Edwardian houses undisturbed by any out of place redevelopment. The purpose of this book is to show just how radically that position changed over the ensuing half century. We trace the outward expansion of places brought about by the availability of the car: the new suburbs and ribbon development. We see how new arterial roads came into being to meet the needs of motor transport and how the centre of cities start to be rebuilt to accommodate it. We witness the growth of sprawl around road junctions on the edge of built up areas and the arrival of new types of building there to service both cars and people: the filling station, the roadhouse. We see how the car encouraged more people to go further afield for sport and pleasure: to the seaside, the races or to new forms of attractions such as the amusement park in the country. And we see how public transport changes over the period from trams to buses with the advent of new facilities such as bus stations. The scale of traffic congestion becomes apparent by the late 1930s. In addition, the impact on the landscape of large motor factories and provision for motor sport is made clear.Trade ReviewIt's a lovely b/w trip back in time and beautifully set out, letting the images tell the story.Classic MotoringThis is a novel as well as instructive look at a previously neglected area of English motoring history, and is highly recommended. The AutomobileThis is an excellent glimpse into the unique archive that is the Aerofilms Collection and I commend it to anyone interested in our motoring heritage. Dalton Watson Fine Books Gaston Grummer: The Art of Carrosserie
Book SynopsisThe years between the two World Wars was an extraordinary period for the French luxury car trade and during this time, Carrosserie Gaston Grümmer was one of the leading coachbuilding houses in Paris. Thanks to this recently discovered and previously unpublished archive, Gaston’s son, Philippe Grümmer, in association with one of the best French automotive historians, Laurent Friry, takes us back to this glorious time. Descended from a long line of coachbuilders, Gaston Grümmer was the son of Antoine-Joseph whose company, J. Grümmer formerly V. Morel, produced first, from 1845, exceptional horse-drawn carriages and from the 1890s, automobile bodies. Trained in the family business before World War I, Gaston Grümmer, spent the war as a soldier, first on horseback, then in the trenches and finally in the air as a pilot. At the end of hostilities, he brilliantly re-launched the family business transforming it into the Société Anonyme des Etablissements Grümmer. As the company moved towards the production of series bodywork for various manufacturers, Gaston decided to break away to build custom cars and in 1924 he created his own company, Carrosserie Gaston Grümmer. For the next ten years he achieved great success on both aesthetic and technical levels, winning many awards. Volume I describes Gaston Grümmer’s early life and the activities of his company up to and including 1933, illustrated with many period photographs, catalogues and press reports. Volume II covers the two last years of the company’s existence, 1934-1935, and describes Gaston Grümmer’s finest achievements in design – the Hirondelle and the Aéroprofil – for which he won many honours. It is followed by an exhaustive appendix detailing the company’s archive of chassis listings of car bodies, the drawing register, a section on the few known remaining cars with Grümmer bodies, and a list of awards received that results in a reference book on coachwork of the 1920s and 1930s that is essential for any student of the period.

Book SynopsisThe straight eight engine, also known as the inline eight engine, was the driving force behind some of the most fascinating luxury vehicles of the first half of the twentieth century. From its introduction in the 1920s through its demise in the 1950s, the straight eight graced a number of upmarket vehicles from makers like Pontiac, Packard, and Daimler, and even appeared under the hood of the hyper-exclusive Rolls-Royce Phantom IV, of which only eighteen models were produced. Although it was eventually replaced by the V8 engine, the straight eight engine can be found in some of the most valuable and sought-after vehicles of all time. Keith Ray's The Straight Eight Engine is the first volume to be published about this extraordinary mechanism. Dalton Watson Fine Books Bugatti: The Italian Decade
Book SynopsisIn the late 1980s, the storied Italian automaker Bugatti positioned itself for a massive relaunch, defying widespread concerns and pinning its hopes on the innovative EB110 sports car. The EB110, which was eventually unveiled in 1991, was the fastest street-legal car of its time and was greeted with acclaim from industry insiders and trade journalists alike. Yet, soon thereafter, things started unraveling: faster cars came onto the market, sales collapsed, and eight years after its relaunch, Bugatti was bankrupt. This book details the car maker's unexpected revival, from the meteoric rise of the EB110 to its dramatic fall, as well as the tales of intrigue and shenanigans from the many prominent automotive personalities who worked behind the scenes. Though the Bugatti name lives on, still signaling the pinnacle in luxury sports car performance, this compelling and confounding automotive fiasco remains an unforgettable chapter in its one-hundred-plus years of existence.Trade Review"No one is more qualified to write the story of Bugatti’s Italian Decade than the irrepressible, prolific, and truly enjoyable Gautam Sen." * Veloce Today *"A very detailed account of a brave undertaking." * Motor Sport *"Sen sources first-hand voices and previously unseen photos to document an era of promising might-have-beens and dashed hopes." * Classic Cars *"This is a supremely thorough book that not only moves the goalposts farther forward but also proffers reasons for reevaluating certain aspects of the delivered canon." * Speedreaders *"A fascinating story that's well told, with illuminating insights from those right at the heart of the adventure." * Magneto *Table of ContentsPREFACE PROLOGUE - FROM MILAN TO MOLSHEIM I - THE BEGINNINGS OF A DREAM II - GETTING IT RIGHT III - DESIGNING THE DREAM IV - COMPLETING THE DESIGN V - UNVEILING OF THE DREAM VI - TESTING THE DREAM VII - MEETING THE PRESS VIII - THE BEST SUPERCAR IN THE WORLD IX - THE BEST YEARS YET X - BUGATTI AT LE MANS XI - THE BEGINNING OF THE END EPILOGUE - AFTER THE CLOSURE APPENDICES BIBLIOGRAPHY INDEX
