Rheumatology Books
Nova Science Publishers Inc New Research on Fibromyalgia
Book SynopsisFibromyalgia syndrome is a common and chronic disorder characterised by widespread muscle pain, fatigue, and multiple tender points. The word fibromyalgia comes from the Latin term for fibrous tissue (fibro) and the Greek ones for muscle (myo) and pain (algia). Tender points are specific places on the body -- on the neck, shoulders, back, hips, and upper and lower extremities -- where people with fibromyalgia feel pain in response to slight pressure. Although fibromyalgia is often considered an arthritis-related condition, it is not truly a form of arthritis (a disease of the joints) because it does not cause inflammation or damage to the joints, muscles, or other tissues. Like arthritis, however, fibromyalgia can cause significant pain and fatigue, and it can interfere with a person''s ability to carry on daily activities. Also like arthritis, fibromyalgia is considered a rheumatic condition. This new book presents the latest research in this field.

Book SynopsisDon’t Get Burned! In her newest book, Dr. Lani Simpson provides readers with no-nonsense, easy-to-understand advice about the sun and how our bodies react to sun exposure. This go-to-guide for all members of the family includes: practical information about how to obtain vitamin D from the sun safely, how to protect yourself and your family from sunburns, and how to find safe sunscreen products. This book examines how our ancestors worshiped the sun and how those beliefs shaped our modern relationship with the sun. Dr. Lani’s No-Nonsense Sun Health Guide advocates for a conscious and respectful relationship with the sun. The sun is now listed as a carcinogen, this is true, especially when we allow our skin to burn and neglect basic sun protection. And we also need vitamin D, which is produced when certain rays interact with exposed skin. There are hundreds of conditions that have been associated with vitamin D deficiency including: multiple cancers, hormone imbalances, bone loss and osteoporosis and multiple sclerosis. So, how do we get this essential vitamin from the sun without damaging our skin that could end up causing skin cancers? Is taking a vitamin D supplement the answer? The fact is, not enough and too much vitamin D can result in health consequences. As a complete guide, it contains chapters on skin cancers, how to identify them, and as well as available treatment options. The final chapter covers the importance of sunlight itself that fosters our natural circadian rhythms for a good night’s sleep. These questions, and many more, are addressed in Dr. Lani’s No-Nonsense Sun Health Guide. This go-to-guide also reveals the truth about: sun exposure vitamin D sun tanning skin cancer chemicals in skin products sunscreen chemicals insomnia and the sun

Springer London Ltd Pocket Primer on the Rheumatic Diseases
Book SynopsisFor eight decades the Primer on the Rheumatic Diseases has been the standard text from which most medical students and house ofcers have learned rheumatology. I myself will never forget thumbing through an older edition of the Primer as a second-year resident, while waiting to review a perplexing patient with my tutor. Fortunately the tutor was r- ning late with his own patients, so I had time to fip through the book – then much thinner – a couple of times. While turning the pages, per- ing the features of those diseases whose names were still exotic to me, and considering my patient’s history of conductive hearing loss and p- monary nodules, a light went on when I stumbled eventually on a part- ular chapter. I still remember the jaw-dropping efect on my tutor of my announcement then that I had a patient with Wegener’s granulomatosis. I think I became a rheumatologist that very moment! Subsequent editions of the Primer have sufered from the inevitable “obesity creep,” making it an outstanding reference textbook but virtually impossible to fip through quickly while awaiting one’s tutor, and even more difcult to slip into the pocket of a white coat to carry on rounds. For this reason we have created the Pocket Primer, a mini version that cuts the larger book down to its essentials.Table of ContentsHistory and Physical Examination.- Laboratory Assessment.- Arthrocentesis and Synovial Fluid Analysis.- Imaging Techniques.- Monarticular Joint Disease.- Polyarticular Joint Disease.- Regional Rheumatic Pain Syndromes.- Fibromyalgia and Diffuse Pain Syndromes.- Rheumatoid Arthritis.- Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.- Psoriatic Arthritis.- Ankylosing Spondylitis.- Reactive and Enteropathic Arthritis.- Osteoarthritis.- Calcium Pyrophosphate Dihydrate, Hydroxyapatite, and Miscellaneous Crystals.- Infectious Disorders.- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.- Antiphospholipid Syndrome.- Systemic Sclerosis.- Idiopathic Inflammatory Myopathies.- Metabolic Myopathies.- Sjögren’s Syndrome.- Vasculitides.- Behçet’s Syndrome.- Adult Still’s Disease.- Autoinflammatory Disorders/Periodic Syndromes.- Less Common Arthropathies.- Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.- Osteonecrosis.- Paget’S Disease.- Osteoporosis.- Therapeutic Injections.- Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs.- Glucocorticoids.- Operative Treatment.- Complementary and Alternative Therapies.

TFM Publishing Ltd Low back pain: Some real answers
Book SynopsisBack pain is the commonest form of rheumatism and it is estimated to affect between 65% and 80% of populations sampled. The costs of back pain-related medical care and disability compensation make it one of society's most significant non-lethal medical conditions. Whilst mortality is low, its morbidity is high, inconvenience great, and economic burden massive. The actual symptom of back pain is one of the commonest and most perplexing encountered in medical practice. A proper understanding of what it means is crucial for further medical advance. However, the field of back pain research probably has more experts than any other. Anybody who has back pain will, as often as not, expound views on all matters concerning causation and expectations. Indeed, it is not for a lack of ideas that this field of investigation has failed to make progress. A respected senior investigator advised me early on that patients could not even tell which side their pain was on. It was only many years later that I discovered why. Though the initial incident or accident would seem important to the patient and to the researcher, it is remarkable how little it helps distinguish patterns of back pain. Tests of inappropriate behaviour in the past have been widely disseminated and yet even the originators have said that they cannot be sure of the implications of positive non-organic test findings. This book will show that these 'indicators' are not what they seem to be. In many cases, it is difficult to tell which level in the lumbar spine the pain comes from, and thus treatments such as injections or operation, may be given at the wrong level, let alone the wrong side. Though the various forms of back pain treatment seem to help some patients, when these same treatments are subjected to randomised controlled trials, the evidence for efficacy seems to all but vanish. With all these difficulties and uncertainties, it can be seen why low back pain presents one of the most fallible fields of healthcare. This book indicates that there are ways of dealing with the majority of these problems. Many of the answers from the research conducted were most unexpected. The reader is also advised that the scientific approach cannot deliver hard and fast answers to all contemporary questions in such a wide field and much has depended on the choice of problems to study. Whilst the tests used to distinguish the patterns in this study have their limitations, and whilst there is, as yet, only limited evidence as to the underlying pathology for the patterns recognised, it is felt that some of the other patterns identified are descriptive of diagnoses that are generally accepted. If the answers that are put forward appear to change the direction of understanding, it is hoped that you, the reader, will be able to carry the enquiry further when you see patients, advise treatment or even experience back pain yourself!

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Musculoskeletal Pain - Assessment, Prediction and
Book SynopsisMusculoskeletal Pain - Assessment, Prediction and Treatment presents a common sense approach to interpreting and applying existing clinical knowledge and new research to help clinicians make sense of the complex phenomena of acute and chronic post-traumatic musculoskeletal pain. Built upon the Assess, Predict, Treat framework, the authors offer a method to help clinicians better understand their patients'' pain. They present evidence-based decision tools to predict the natural and clinical course of common conditions, such as neck and low back pain, and they then synthesize that information into a logical, integrated treatment approach, which respects the individuality of the patient, the experiences of the clinician, and the value of evidence-informed practice.David Walton and James Elliott are leaders in the field of post-traumatic pain and recovery. Their work provides a valuable framework to facilitate novice clinicians in their transition towards experts and helps mid- and late-stage clinicians better interpret, synthesize, and discuss complex information on pain with the goal of optimised outcomes for patients.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Rheumatic Diseases and Syndromes Induced by
Book SynopsisWith the increasing use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) across various cancers, the trends for indication at earlier stages, and the use of combination immunotherapy, the frequency of ICI-induced immune-related adverse events (irAE) is expected to grow substantially. Management of these irAE is challenging as it requires not only consideration of the toxicity but also risk-benefit ratios with respect to the primary cancer. Several rheumatic irAE have been reported with ICI therapy including arthritis, myositis, polymyalgia-like syndromes, sicca/Sjogren-like manifestations, and several other less common systemic autoimmune features commonly associated with connective tissue disease. This handbook provides clinicians with a comprehensive overview of the management of rheumatic irAE that develop from cancer immunotherapy. It focuses on the irAE seen with ICI, the most frequently used agents in treating cancer. It provides an overview of cancer immunology, immunotoxicity, and immunotherapies such as ICI, cytokine-based therapy, and CART. It examines the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and treatment of a variety of rheumatic immune-related adverse events arising from these therapies. Chapters also cover cancer immunotherapy in patients with preexisting rheumatic diseases such as inflammatory arthritis and other connective tissue disorders. The book helps clinicians to distinguish the current types of cancer immunotherapy and general toxicity patterns, recognize and diagnose rheumatic clinical syndromes, understand the pathogenesis of irAE, and consider risk–benefit ratios when managing patients with rheumatic irAE.Rheumatic Diseases and Syndromes Induced by Cancer Immunotherapy is an essential resource for physicians and related professionals, residents, fellows, graduate students and nurses alike in rheumatology, clinical immunology, oncology, and internal medicine.Table of ContentsPART 1 - INTRODUCTION1. Springer International Publishing AG Telerheumatology: Origins, Current Practice, and
Book SynopsisThis book details the practice of telerheumatology. Telemedicine is defined as the delivery of healthcare and the exchange of healthcare information across distances. Following, telerheumatology is the delivery of rheumatology care through telemedicine. There exists an increasing demand from patients, caregivers, and healthcare systems for access to academic specialists through telemedicine. This has been the case for the past several years and the demand has only increased with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. There is currently a lack of rheumatologists in rural areas and that is expected to spread to a general lack by 2025. Telerheumatology offers an excellent and timely solution to fill these gaps and provide care.Telerheumatology care has been shown to be feasible and quite effective. The current COVID-19 pandemic has thrust the concept of telemedicine into the spotlight. However, not all telerheumatology care is the same and there exists many nuances and differences when examining telerheumatology care across the United States and the world. After comprehensively reviewing the origins of telerheumatology, this work defines in detail the current practice of telerheumatology, along with the specific impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and all applications of telerheumatology. Expert authors also provide a detailed roadmap for providers to initiate, sustain, and grow a telerheumatology program. The book concludes by covering future directions of telerheumatology, including areas for expansion, improvement, and innovation. After reading this work, the editor and all the contributing authors hope that it will inspire, provoke thought and discussion, and lead to increased adaptation of providing telerheumatology care by rheumatologists and rheumatology providers.Table of Contents
