  • Mastering the SemiStructured Interview and Beyond

New York University Press Mastering the SemiStructured Interview and Beyond

Book SynopsisMastering the Semi-Structured Interview and Beyond offers an in-depth and captivating step-by-step guide to the use of semi-structured interviews in qualitative research. By tracing the life of an actual research projectan exploration of a school district''s effort over 40 years to address racial equalityas a consistent example threaded across the volume, Anne Galletta shows in concrete terms how readers can approach the planning and execution of their own new research endeavor, and illuminates unexpected real-life challenges they may confront and how to address them. The volume offers a close look at the inductive nature of qualitative research, the use of researcher reflexivity, and the systematic and iterative steps involved in data collection, analysis, and interpretation. It offers guidance on how to develop an interview protocol, including the arrangement of questions and ways to evoke analytically rich data. Particularly useful for those who may be familiar with qTrade ReviewA beautifully crafted book. Methodologically authoritative and narratively engaging, its comprehensive description of the semi-structured interview introduces established and emerging social scientists to a versatile, informative, inductive qualitative method that too often is treated as if it were methodologically self-evident. Galletta describes how this method can include diverse participants voices, experiences, understandings, and concerns with rigor and rich conceptual and narrative effects. This timely book will surely be a classic, widely used in methods courses and as an important resource for researchers interested in the complex dynamics of social issues and societal change. -- Susan Opotow,John Jay College of Criminal Justice and The Graduate Center, CUNYReading this book is like having an extended conversation with a wise and experienced qualitative researcher that explores not only how to construct and conduct effective semi-structured interviews but also many other aspects of qualitative research, including the difficult but important question of how to move from your data to your conclusions. -- Janet Ward Schofield,University of PittsburghTable of ContentsContentsForeword by William E. • The Philosophy of Management Research

Taylor & Francis The Philosophy of Management Research

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisDespite an increasing number of scattered philosophy-based discussions of management research methodology, there has not been a book that provides a systematic and more comprehensive treatment of the subject. This book addresses this gap in the market and provides new ideas and arguments for guiding management researchers.Trade Review‘At a time when empirical social science research is being questioned as never before the timing of this book could not have been better. Professor Eric Tsang assembled a collection of earlier papers and new materials covering every aspect of empirical social science research that guide scholars in their quest to undertake empirical work underlying management research that satisfies criteria of Popperian falsifiability, data transparency, robustness, replication, treatment of outliers and null findings. I strongly recommend this volume for advanced research methodology courses and for all scholars aspiring to undertake empirical social science research consistent with new emphasis on data transparency, replication and falsifiability. ‘— Arie Y. Lewin, Editor in Chief Management and Organization Review, and Professor at Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, U.S.A.'Most PhD programs in management include a major course on research methods or a separate course on the philosophy of science because of its importance for understanding the philosophical underpinnings of research. Until now, however, there was no book that explained the philosophical underpinnings of management research. Eric Tsang in his new book does just that by explaining the philosophical base for the different methodological approaches to management research. In so doing, he examines the nature of assumptions, theory testing, generalization and replication, among other critical issues. This book makes a critical contribution to management research and is an especially valuable addition for scholars who are early in their research careers. It will enrich the research in our field.’ — Michael A. Hitt, University Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Texas A&M University; Distinguished Research Fellow, Texas Christian University, U.S.A.‘This is a much-needed book for all students and scholars interested in understanding and explaining management and business practices, including decisions and behaviors, at all levels of analysis. It’s not a book about philosophy but a practical treatment of important foundational knowledge of science that all who are claiming or aspiring to be scientists must understand. Questions of what constitutes science, what critical assumptions render some theories valid and some invalid, and why current management research may not qualify as science are addressed. I recommend this as a core text for all research methods courses at the undergraduate, master and doctoral levels. I recommend this as a must read for all novice and experienced management and organization researchers. It will help you do better research and be a true scientist, living up to the goal of science, which is to seek true explanations and accurate predictions and to generate useful knowledge to inform policies and improve practices.’ — Anne Tsui, Distinguished Professor of Management at Peking University and Fudan University, China, and Motorola Professor Emerita of International Management at Arizona State University, U.S.A.Table of Contents1. • Qualitative Inquiry in Everyday Life

Sage Publications Ltd Qualitative Inquiry in Everyday Life

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is a 'survival guide' for students and researchers who would like to conduct a qualitative study with limited resources. Brinkmann shows how everyday life materials such as books, television, the internet, the media and everyday conversations and interactions can help us to understand larger social issues. As living human beings in cultural worlds, we are constantly surrounded by 'data' that call for analysis, and as we cope with the different situations and episodes of our lives, we are engaged in understanding and interpreting the world as a form of qualitative inquiry. The book helps its reader develop a disciplined and analytic awareness informed by theory, and shows how less can be more in qualitative research. Each chapter introduces theoretical tools to think with, and demonstrates how they can be put to use in working concretely with everyday life materials.Trade ReviewBrinkmann′s text works out of the well-established tradition of everyday life studies and the critical narrative framework developed by Steinar Kvale. It is clearly written, it is accessible, it has good examples and it systematically works through the use and study of self-observations, conversations, media, cinema, and literature Norman DenzinUniversity of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Overall, Brinkmann adds a welcome and informative contribution to the existing body of research methods literature. He presents and explains the varying theoretical and practical aspects of carrying out a relatively new and unexplored type of qualitative inquiry-everyday life research. Brinkmann’s arguments are clearly articulated, and where appropriate, often supplemented by commentary on his own personal research experiences, breakdowns of key terms and concepts, and practical exercises/points for reflection. With the exception of a few areas, in which Brinkmann might have expanded the range of issues discussed (relating to ethics), or made some points clearer (on approaches involved in self-observation studies), this book could be considered very readable, accessible, and would make a useful point of reference for students, academics and researchers alike. Emma SmithBook reviews, Methodspace The book could be used interdisciplinary, in different scientific areas - by sociologists, psychologists, philosophers, experts in literature, even the ordinary reader who is interested in a more scientific approach to everyday life events and experiences. Stanislava StoyanovaMethodspace Brinkmann immediately won my interest in his book with his less is more argument... In each chapter, he provides a deeply theoretical analysis of the source and methods of studying it, lightened by an extended illustrative example exploring some aspect of the new experience or expression of guilt and shame... Throughout this book, Brinkmann is drawing on his extensive knowledge of philosophical, psychological and literary sources to argue for and exemplify a style of research that draws on points of breakdown, when everyday expectations aren′t met. This book is not for the faint hearted... This is a book for the serious researcher, one from which, if you are prepared to put in the work to read, study, and apply, you will reap stimulating ideas and rich intellectual rewards. Pat BazeleyBooks Reviews, Methodspace Brinkmann successfully achieves ‘conceptual audacity’ in his text. It comes across as multilayered, rich in description, and analysis, while at the same time providing a valuable stock of qualitative theory, and useful examples. This is an inspiring textbook, which would be useful to novice and experienced qualitative researchers alike. -- Iona TanguayTable of ContentsIntroduction: Making Less More PART ONE Qualitative Research and Everyday Life The Epistemology of Working with Everyday Life Materials The Ethics of Working with Everyday Life Materials PART TWO Self Observation Conversations Media Materials Movies, Images and Television Books of Fiction Conclusions: On Quality

Book SynopsisThis fifth edition of a highly cited textbook provides a broad overview of the study of judgments and decisions. It covers normative standards, including logic, probability, and forms of utility theory, and it explains cognitive biases that violate these standards.Trade Review'This is the definitive textbook on decision making, reflecting Baron's unmatched combination of intellectual breadth and precision. Grounded in fundamentals, this book integrates seamlessly across disciplines and incorporates the most important new ideas. It's an ideal introduction for students and a vital reference for seasoned scholars - a remarkable achievement.' Joshua Greene, Harvard University, USA'Jon Baron's fifth edition of Thinking and Deciding provides an update to his excellent and thoughtful integration of the decision making literature, and what has evolved into the field of behavioral economics. Baron is rigorous and insightful. The world would be better off if more people read his comprehensive book.' Max H. Bazerman, Harvard Business School, USA'This clearly written and engaging book comprehensively reviews the major theories and findings in the field of judgment and decision making. It reminds me of all I have forgotten and all I haven't learned. I will study it carefully to learn more about a field I thought I knew well.' Paul Slovic, University of Oregon, USA'Jon Baron has an encyclopedic command of judgment and decision making literature. It is on full display in this remarkably engaging overview of the field.' Barbara Mellers, University of Pennsylvania, USA'This book, by a leading researcher in the field, offers an original perspective on the link between cognition and choice. In a somewhat historical perspective, Baron reviews fundamental issues in research on decision making, showing how old established findings, as well as new ones fit within the same schemes.' Ilana Ritov, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel'For 35 years, Thinking and Deciding has set the intellectual and pedagogical standard for presenting a field that has grown dramatically in importance since the first edition. The new edition maintains these high standards. It is thorough, thoughtful, insightful, clear, and comprehensive. • External Validity and Evidence Accumulation

Cambridge University Press External Validity and Evidence Accumulation

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe accumulation of empirical evidence that has been collected in multiple contexts, places, and times requires a more comprehensive understanding of empirical research than is typically required for interpreting the findings from individual studies. We advance a novel conceptual framework where causal mechanisms are central to characterizing social phenomena that transcend context, place, or time. We distinguish various concepts of external validity, all of which characterize the relationship between the effects produced by mechanisms in different settings. Approaches to evidence accumulation require careful consideration of cross-study features, including theoretical considerations that link constituent studies and measurement considerations about how phenomena are quantifed. Our main theoretical contribution is developing uniting principles that constitute the qualitative and quantitative assumptions that form the basis for a quantitative relationship between constituent studies. We then apply our framework to three approaches to studying general social phenomena: meta-analysis, replication, and extrapolation.

  • Inside Parties

    Cambridge University Press Inside Parties

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhile extensive research examines electoral systems and institutions at the country-level, few studies investigate rules within parties. Inside Parties changes the research landscape by systematically examining 65 parties in 20 parliamentary democracies around the world. Georgia Kernell develops a formal model of party membership and tests the hypotheses using cross-national surveys, member studies, experiments, and computer simulations of projected vote shares. She finds that a party''s level of decentralization ? the degree to which it incorporates rank and file members into decision making ? determines which voters it best represents. Decentralized parties may attract more members to campaign for the party, but they do so at the cost of adopting more extreme positions that pull them away from moderate voters. Novel and comprehensive, Inside Parties is an indispensable study of how parties select candidates, nominate leaders, and set policy goals.

  • The Peoples Book of Human Sexuality

Taylor & Francis Ltd The Peoples Book of Human Sexuality

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis collection aims to fill in the deep gaps of vital contributions that have been erased from the sexuality field, illuminating the historical and current work, strategies, solutions, and thoughts from sexologists that have been excluded until now. Historically, the US sexuality field has not included the experiences and wisdom of racialized sexologists, educators, therapists, or professionals. Instead, sexuality professionals have been trained using a color-free narrative that does an injustice by excluding their work as well as failing to offer a fuller examination of how they have expanded the field and held it accountable. The result of this wholesale erasure is that today many sexuality professionals understand these contributions as extra or tangential, and not part of the full vision and history of the field of sexology. Highlighting the voices and experiences of those who have been racialized and thus excluded, isolated, erased, and yet have still emerged as vital cTrade Review"The People’s Book of Human Sexuality: Expanding the Sexology Archive offers us a compelling narrative and strategy for leading and engaging in inclusive conversations. With career development and impact in mind, the book goes beyond simply listing tools, instead teaching students how to prepare for a major strategic business case analysis project, how to position their analysis on a spectrum from reductionist to holistic approaches, how to critically engage with theory and case data, as well as how to leverage their work after completion.A logical approach is offered, taking the reader through the analysis journey, from preparing to analyse a case study to conducting the analysis and maximising the impact going forwards. A comprehensive analysis task is incorporated, which asks the reader to reflect on a range of case data, understand the choices of analytical positioning and tool selection, and develop an analysis based on this positioning. Book SynopsisThis book challenges the widespread assumption that a necessary preliminary to qualitative research is the formulation of ontological and epistemological beliefs. It argues that the metaphysical claims which supposedly underpin different approaches to social research do not make sense. Literally. Sentences such as There is a single objective reality' and There are multiple constructed realities' fail to make information-providing statements. They do not refer or describe. Despite appearances, they say nothing about reality (or realities) at a fundamental level, so they cannot be used to justify, ground, or align with, methodological decisions. In particular, this book demonstrates how long-term processes can be studied, how different forms of duration dependencies can be estimated using nonparametric, parametric and semiparametric models, and how parallel and interdependent dynamic systems can be analyzed from a causal-analytical point of view using the method of episode splitting. The book also shows how changing contextual information at the micro, meso and macro levels can be easily integrated into a dynamic analysis of longitudinal data. Finally, the book addresses the problem of unobserved heterogeneity of time-constant and time-dependent omitted variables and makes suggestions for dealing with these sometimes difficult methodological problems.Causal Analysis with Event History Data Using Stata is an invaluable resource for both novice and experienced researchers from a variety of fields (e.g. sociology, economics, political science, education, psychology, demography, epidemiology, management research and organizational studies, as well as medicine and clinical applications) who need an introductory text- book on continuous-time event history analysis and who are looking for a practical handbook for their longitudinal research.

  • Analysing the Israel Effect in Canada

Taylor & Francis Analysing the Israel Effect in Canada

Book SynopsisWhat is the life of a Palestinian worth to intellectuals in Canadian universities and news media? Analyzing the Israel Effect documents and analyzes the discursive and organizational methods by which public criticism of Israelâs oppression of the Palestinians is silenced in Canada, as experienced through ten episodes in the life of the author over a thirty-year period from 1990-2020 in interaction with his university and local and national Canadian news media. As a sociological work the book is a critical autoethnography. But it is also an atrocity tale, a horror story of institutional self-censorship amounting to the abrogation of intellectual responsibility by those specifically charged with upholding it. In the end, the book is a crossover between academic treatise and journalistic exposÃ, âœa historical narrative written by an academic from the standpoint of a political participant-observerâ (Rajan Philips). The Israel Effect itself is analyzed as a three-tier propaganda industry. Hasbara is produced in Israel (Tier 1), disseminated to Israel Lobby groups around the world (Tier 2) and independently re-produced, actively and passively, by the âœintellectualâ institutions â universities and news media (Tier 3). This book is about the non-Jewish, non-Zionist institutions of Tier 3, the onlookers to war crimes, ethnic cleansing and, arguably, genocide, as in Gaza in October-November 2023.This work stands as a compelling testament to the importance of preserving freedom of expression, and the vital role intellectuals play in challenging injustice and promoting transparency. It is ideal for scholars, activists, and anyone seeking to understand the complexities of political activism and the power dynamics behind public discourse.

Chapters discuss the characteristics of interpretivism, genealogically trace positivismâs dominance in presidency studies, and identify how attributes of the presidency that raise methodological challenges for positivism are the same that make it fertile ground for interpretivism. Part II explores a wide range of interpretive scholarship on the American presidency, including studies of presidential meaning making, the institutionâs historical-political development, presidential symbolism, the construction of the presidency, and the presidential spectacle.
