Book SynopsisExploring the rise of open scholarship in the digital era and its transformational impact on how knowledge is created, shared, and accessed, this open access book offers new insights on the history, development, and future directions of openness in the humanities and identifies key drivers, opportunities, and challenges. The concept of open research is reconfiguring scholarly communication across all disciplines, changing how understandings are produced through more accessible, participatory, ethical, and transparent approaches, reaching and involving far broader and more diverse publics. Considering multiple stakeholder perspectives, Arthur and Hearn argue that for the humanities to proactively contribute to open knowledge at the global scale, new ways of thinking are needed within every part of the system. In the open information economy, the humanities are on a trajectory following the sciences, but parts of the world are almost completely left out. A cultural shifTrade ReviewThis book offers a clarion call to academia for the necessity of participating in "the global drive toward an interconnected digital future". Open Scholarship in the Humanities is required reading for digital humanists, chairs of humanities departments, librarians, directors of digital humanities centers, and deans of liberal arts colleges. -- Laura C. Mandell, Professor of English Literature and Founding Director of the Center of Digital Humanities, Texas A&M University, USAPaul Longley Arthur and Lydia Hearn's Open Scholarship in the Humanities gives a concise and up-to-date history and context for open, digital practices in the humanities. • Facilitating Researchers in Insecure Zones

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Facilitating Researchers in Insecure Zones

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume brings together accounts from facilitating or ''brokering'' researchers in three settings afflicted by armed conflict, including DR Congo, Sierra Leone and Jharkhand, India. Indispensable to the research practice carried out by so-called ''contracting researchers'', who are often based in the Global North, it is these facilitating researchers who truly regulate the access and flow of knowledge, and yet are often referred to merely as ''fixers'', with their contributions systematically erased in the final research texts. This book recounts first-hand the varied and crucial roles played by such researchers, meanwhile bearing witness to the insecurities and scarce resources navigated by them in order to facilitate the research of others. By listening to and learning from their experiences, the book outlines different routes towards a more equitable fieldwork, and a more collaborative process of knowledge production.Trade ReviewFacilitating Researchers in Insecure Zones is a compelling and innovative book that highlights the unequal relationship between Contracting Researchers and Facilitating Researchers engaging in research in conflict-affected countries. Examples from experiences in Sierra Leone, India and DR Congo are used to discuss the types of inequalities in the research process, from the conceptualization of the research to the publication of the research findings and analysis, including the funding of the research. It is an invaluable resource for researchers to establish a good and equal relationship prior to future research endeavors. * Gameela Samarasinghe, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka *Facilitating Researchers sheds needed light on the plight of unsung heroes, those Global South scholars who despite their role in shaping the production of knowledge are hardly acknowledged. It is a timely decolonial intervention that charts a new course for doing ethical and more equitable fieldwork in the Global South. * Didier Gondola, Johns Hopkins University, USA *For anyone interested in global postcoloniality, this is a wonderful and must-read book by mainly Global South-based researchers on North-South knowledge production. Rooted in Global South sites of armed conflict, the book’s contributions are all the more compelling – and therefore all the more insightful – on the perils and potentialities of researcher relationships and knowledge co-production across the North-South, elite-subaltern, war-peace, and class/gender/ethnic/racial divides. * Ilan Kapoor, author of The Postcolonial Politics of Development and Confronting Desire: Psychoanalysis and International Development. *This book catalyses transformative thinking about the ethics and practice of equitable research partnerships between researchers in the global north and global south. It brings together compelling chapters by researchers from Sierra Leone, Congo and Jharkhand who share their reflections of working in insecure zones through multiple relationalities between communities and institutions across diverse spatial contexts and social hierarchies. This book is a must read for scholars and practitioners of international development and international relations who are looking for practical and actionable ways for decolonising research methods in conflict and post conflict settings. * Ipshita Basu, University of Westminster, UK *This volume provides an honest, useful analysis for researchers from various disciplines on the difficult question of collaboration between research teams. The various chapters provide powerful accounts and innovative approaches to understanding the complex relationships between those who make research possible in often very difficult contexts and in some cases in their communities where research is conducted who they call ‘facilitating researchers’, and those from ‘Contracting researchers’ often from outside the researched communities. The examples drawn from lived experiences are rich as they are from various countries in Africa, and Asia but also reflect on dilemmas familiar to researchers globally. Unlike most literature on similar topics, the volume concludes with practical ideas that point to more hopeful future pathways to navigate these ethical challenges during the research process in sensitive contexts. * David Mwambari, associate professor KU Leuven University, Belgium *Table of ContentsChapter 1: Spotlight on the Research Backstage: Introduction by the editors Chapter 2: Getting and keeping engaged Chapter 3: The indispensable bridge: “without us no research” Chapter 4: Systematically silenced and non--recognized Chapter 5: Navigating insecurity with scarce resources Chapter 6: Beyond a narrow South/North divide Chapter 7: Beyond the bleak picture: Comraderie into the Future Chapter 8: Recommendations: how to bring about change?

Book SynopsisThe development of theorems in logic is generally thought to be a solitary and purely cerebral activity, and therefore unobservable by sociologists. This book challenges this notion by tracing the history of one well-known example in the field of artificial intelligence - a theorem on the foundations of fuzzy logic.Trade Review"Sociologist Rosental meticulously argues for the materiality of logic as a field of inquiry. He rigorously grounds his work in science studies, extending the reach of social analysis into a domain superficially thought to be purely mental: that of logical formalism and proof."--J.L. • The Filing Cabinet: A Vertical History of

University of Minnesota Press The Filing Cabinet: A Vertical History of

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe history of how a deceptively ordinary piece of office furniture transformed our relationship with information The ubiquity of the filing cabinet in the twentieth-century office space, along with its noticeable absence of style, has obscured its transformative role in the histories of both information technology and work. In the first in-depth history of this neglected artifact, Craig Robertson explores how the filing cabinet profoundly shaped the way that information and data have been sorted, stored, retrieved, and used.Invented in the 1890s, the filing cabinet was a result of the nineteenth-century faith in efficiency. Previously, paper records were arranged haphazardly: bound into books, stacked in piles, curled into slots, or impaled on spindles. The filing cabinet organized loose papers in tabbed folders that could be sorted alphanumerically, radically changing how people accessed, circulated, and structured information.Robertson’s unconventional history of the origins of the information age posits the filing cabinet as an information storage container, an “automatic memory” machine that contributed to a new type of information labor privileging manual dexterity over mental deliberation. Gendered assumptions about women’s nimble fingers helped to naturalize the changes that brought women into the workforce as low-level clerical workers. The filing cabinet emerges from this unexpected account as a sophisticated piece of information technology and a site of gendered labor that with its folders, files, and tabs continues to shape how we interact with information and data in today’s digital world.Trade Review"How we store information reflects the aspirations we have about what to remember. Taking this idea to heart, Craig Robertson's essential history of the filing cabinet is the definitive account of verticality and efficiency as guiding principles for corporate capitalism."—Melissa Gregg, senior principal engineer, Client Computing Group, Intel"Craig Robertson’s book offers a fascinating account of how the humble file cabinet and the associated practice of filing shaped the emergence of modern conceptions of information. These influences continue to reverberate—from the organization of our computer desktops to our assumptions about ‘information’ as a discrete entity that can be stored, manipulated, and retrieved. A significant contribution to media studies and information studies."—Jennifer S. Light, Massachusetts Institute of Technology*"In this fascinating history, Craig Robertson shows how a seemingly mundane thing was central to the rise of modern bureaucracies, information society, and the gendered relations of office labor. Wonderfully researched and full of surprises, The Filing Cabinet explores an object and a system that orchestrated new ways of knowing, remembering, and experiencing the world."—Lynn Spigel, Northwestern University "[The filing cabinet] worked to blur the past into the present with active storage; and the future into the present by encouraging forethought. The Filing Cabinet would be particularly helpful for researchers who want to write about media materialism without getting lost in the minutiae of model numbers."—LSE Review of Books "[Robertson’s] prowess for raiding an archive is formidable, and he has a talent for cherry-picking unusual details."—Washington Examiner "Captivating . . . the filing cabinet, despite its deep roots in our contemporary information architecture, is just one step in our epistemological journey, not its end."—The Atlantic "Timely, incisive, and impressively imaginative."—The New Rambler "If you’re a reader who relishes the unconventional, if you’ve pondered arcane subjects at odd times, or if you want a conversation-breaker at the water cooler, find The Filing Cabinet. Yep, this is the book you need now."—Idaho Press "Robertson persuasively sets out the ways in which domestic furniture and organising practices were reshaped to mirror those found in offices."—Literary Review "A useful and thought-provoking text for those of us dependent on the filing cabinet and the subsequent technologies they inspire, this book deserves a wider readership in both the art historical and cultural studies fields."—College & Research Libraries "Robertson eloquently describes the historical account of the filing cabinet."—International Journal of Communication "Robertson deconstructs and situates the filing cabinet in its historical contexts of use, with the support of a rich apparatus of beautiful images."—H-Net Reviews Table of ContentsContentsPreface: Discovering the Power of the Filing CabinetIntroduction: Making Paper Work EfficientlyPart 1. Information Age Publishing The Concise APA Handbook

Book SynopsisMost students struggle with learning how to find references, use them effectively, and cite them appropriately in a required format. One of the most common formats is that of APA. The authors all have vast experience teaching writing courses to various levels of studentsfrom undergraduates to graduates in other countries. However, there was lacking a book that could explain the basics of APA in simple, easy-to-understand language for non-native speakers of English, who are often unfamiliar with using references and formatting an essay in a particular method. In order to offer English Learner student writers a source of information that is appropriate for their level, and is cost-effective, this updated APA 7th edition guidebook provides students with important information in clear, concise, user-friendly language, as well as to offer practical examples that will help them grasp the concept of secondary research writing.Much of the published materials on the market targets native speakers of English. The problem with this is that they present the nitpicky details of APA in ways that do not make sense to native speakers of English, let alone to those for whom English is not their first language, because the information is presented in very technical terms that are not easyto understand. This handbook presents the same information in simplified terms with images and step-by-step instructions in ways that make sense to both native and non-native English speaking student writers. Additionally, student writers often struggle with understanding the concept of plagiarism, as well as how to find sources, evaluate the appropriateness of sources, and use sources in effective ways (e.g., how to integrate quotes, when to paraphrase, among others). How might these figurative windows of insight, thought, ideas, fantasy, and fancy make us think differently about curriculum, teaching, learning, students, education, leadership, and schools? Further, how might they help us see more clearly, even perhaps put us on a path to correct the mistakes and missteps of intervening decades and of today? The chapter authors and editors revisit and interpret several of the most important works in the curriculum field of the 2000s. • A Research Agenda for Public Administration

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd A Research Agenda for Public Administration

Book SynopsisElgar Research Agendas outline the future of research in a given area. Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject in provocative ways, and map out the potential directions of travel. They are relevant but also visionary. In order to be successful, public administration (PA) research has to be methodologically promiscuous. Attempting either quantitative or qualitative purity is no way to reflect the complex realities of public administration in the real world. Looking to the future of the subject, this Research Handbook seeks to suggest the future of PA research, and the directions which it may - or should - take. With chapters from leading researchers, A Research Agenda for Public Administration offers observations, analysis, and concerns from researchers. With thematically linked chapters, this book focuses and clarifies the current research agenda for public administration while endorsing the need for relevant research in the field, and advocating for theory which fits the reality and practice of public administration, for example, in the areas of climate change, disease control, and migration and inequality. This Research Agenda will assist students of PA as well as of public sector management, especially postgraduates, but it is also a useful resource for more established researchers seeking to understand the major emerging issues.Contributors include: T. Brandsen, G. Brewer, W. Dreschsler, P. Dunleavy, C.A. Dunlop, M. Evans, M. Halupka, S. Kuhlman, T.R. Liiv, A. Massey, C. McGregor, K. Pan-Suk, C. Pollitt, C.M. Radaelli, T. Randma-Liiv, R. Rhodes, K. ZhiyongTrade Review‘Graduate students would find inspiration in this book, as well as senior researchers interested in the topics and/or grappling with the relationship between academic public administration and the practice of governance and public management.’ -- Petra Svensson, International Review of Public Policy‘The book offers an appealing mix of subject and method; while some chapters stand out in their clarity and unique approach to problems, the book as a whole is a worthwhile journey through the current thinking about PA research and where it is headed. It will be of principle interest to those engaged in such research, and most immediately, those that are looking for ideas about how to make immediate and strong impact, not just in academic circles but on practice, and thus on the future of our field.’ -- Christopher Atkinson, International Journal of Public Administration'This surprising book does not just present a research agenda. Leading public administration scholars ask important questions about the relevance of the field: why are we doing this? And they're not afraid of slaughtering a herd of sacred cows on the road to relevance.' --Steven Van de Walle, KU Leuven Public Governance Institute, Belgium'Andrew Massey has assembled an all-star cast of mostly European public administration scholars to develop, as the title suggests, a research agenda for the field of public administration. Most assuredly the book does that, and does it exceedingly well, as current research approaches are examined from many perspectives, both critically and analytically. What is most intriguing however is whether Massey intentionally set out to do what this book so ably does and that is to demonstrate that the most substantively interesting scholarship in the field is now being done on the European side of the Atlantic Ocean. This book is a must read for scholars on both sides of the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans.' --Allan Rosenbaum, Florida International University, United Nations Committee of Experts on Public Administration and International Commission on the Accreditation of Public Administration Education and Training Programs - IASIA, USTable of ContentsContents: 1. Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd A Research Agenda for the Entrepreneurial

Book SynopsisElgar Research Agendas outline the future of research in a given area. Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject in provocative ways, and map out the potential directions of travel. They are relevant but also visionary. This far-reaching Research Agenda highlights the main features of entrepreneurial university research over the two decades since the concept was first introduced, and examines how technological, environmental and social changes will affect future research questions and themes. It revisits existing research that tends to adopt either an idealised or a sceptical view of the entrepreneurial university, arguing for further investigation and the development of bridges between these two strands.Offering insights into both mainstream and critical approaches, top international scholars discuss a wide range of studies from various analytical and methodological perspectives. Contributions envision the future development of the 'alternative entrepreneurial university', creating space for more localised and contextualised institutions that can be both responsive to the needs of their societies and proactive in shaping them.Academics and practitioners interested in the entrepreneurial university will find this forward-looking Research Agenda to be crucial reading. It will also be beneficial for PhD researchers in framing key directions and questions for future research.Trade Review'From an academic point of view, entrepreneurial universities are still an emergent area in the field of entrepreneurship. This book, written by a group of scholars at the leading edge on this topic, is offering new and fresh research perspectives. I found interest in every piece of research; however, I would recommend paying greater attention to those chapters taking a critical stance toward the phenomenon and those discussing the challenges and opportunities entrepreneurial universities might meet in the digital era.' -- Alain Fayolle, University of Cagliari, Italy'This important new book not only makes crystal clear the key role played by an entrepreneurial university in driving economic performance, it also paves a pioneering path directing research and thought leadership on how best to create, develop and sustain an entrepreneurial university. • Sustainable Wellbeing Futures: A Research and

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Sustainable Wellbeing Futures: A Research and

Book SynopsisClimate disruption, overpopulation, biodiversity loss, the threats of financial collapse, large-scale damage to our natural and social environments and eroding democracy are all becoming critically important concerns. The editors of this timely book assert that these problems are not separate, but all stem from our overreliance on an out-dated approach to economics that puts growth of production and consumption above all else. Ecological economics can help create the future that most people want - a future that is prosperous, just, equitable and sustainable. This forward-thinking book lays out an alternative approach that places the sustainable wellbeing of humans and the rest of nature as the overarching goal. Each of the book s chapters, written by a diverse collection of scholars and practitioners, outlines a research and action agenda for how this future can look and possible actions for its realization. Sustainable Wellbeing Futures will be of value to academics and students researching environmental and ecological economics, as well as individuals interested in gaining a greater understanding of the concept of a wellbeing future and how we might act to achieve it. • A Research Agenda for Energy Politics

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd A Research Agenda for Energy Politics

Book SynopsisElgar Research Agendas outline the future of research in a given area. Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject in provocative ways, and map out the potential directions of travel. They are relevant but also visionary.Presenting cutting-edge research on the future of energy geopolitics, this visionary and provocative Research Agenda takes a hard look at the pressing issues faced by energy researchers in the new world (dis)order.Analyzing through three distinct lenses of affordability, security and sustainability, this innovative book begins by tracking the history and evolution of energy politics. Leading experts in the field identify the sources of instability within world energy markets, the problems of capital allocation to finance a growing demand for smart and renewable energy, and the benefits and costs of geo-economic shifts. A global range of case studies discuss the future of energy geopolitics, asking pressing questions about the deployment of clean energy technology, the implications of hydrocarbon price climbing, and the feasibility and possibilities of space mining. Ultimately, the book seeks to elucidate the uncertainties, paths, and impacts of the future developments in the energy transition and clearly define a future research agenda for energy politics. In doing so, it attempts to capture the complexity and constraints facing energy and its different sources — some that are complementary, some that compete with one another.Interdisciplinary and international in scope, this book will prove vital to students and scholars interested in energy security, politics and policy, alongside those studying energy markets and finance. It will also prove useful to policymakers and organizations in the energy sector concerned with the future of energy. Book SynopsisElgar Research Agendas outline the future of research in a given area. Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject in provocative ways and map out the potential directions of travel. They are relevant but also visionary. This enlightening Research Agenda considers the latest developments within the world of work, arguing that the time is right to address the variety of Human Resource Management (HRM) practices and arrangements.Helping readers to deepen their theoretical understanding of HRM systems and processes, this Research Agenda brings insights from strategic human capital and theories that have been outside the main focus of strategic HRM researchers. Chapters look at attribution theories, the role of human and social capital in strategic HRM, as well as institutional or social forces that affect firm choices of HRM practices and outcomes. The book takes us beyond a best practice view by examining online labour platforms, the liquid workforce, networked organizations, and the management of human resources in entrepreneurial firms.Exploring the varying forms of HRM systems and practices, this book will be a key resource for scholars and PhD students in the fields of human resource management and strategic management.Trade Review‘While nearly all would agree that the world of work is undergoing dramatic change, there is an underappreciation of the increasing variation in organizational forms that is emerging. This volume fills the gap with thoughtful essays each of which provides new theory and evidence. Practitioners as well as theorists will benefit much from the many insights provided by top scholars in this volume. The essays clarify not only what is happening, but also why change is occurring and what policymakers could do to ensure society benefits from the ongoing changes.’ -- Harry C. Book SynopsisElgar Research Agendas outline the future of research in a given area. Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject in provocative ways, and map out the potential directions of travel. They are relevant but also visionary. With contributions from global leading scholars, this Research Agenda offers an interdisciplinary collection of ideas investigating gender and leadership; where we are today and where we are going. Using critical perspectives, chapters challenge the way we think about gender and leadership by questioning the status quo. Providing cutting edge discussion from authors of diverse genders, races, ages, ethnicities, and religions, this book provides analysis of the key issues and methodologies in modern leadership research. Forward thinking, it examines current guidelines and provides insight towards an equitable and positive change in leadership.Leadership scholars and graduate students interested in business leadership as well as gender and management more broadly will find this not only an informative but an illuminating read.Trade Review‘Critical, timely, thoughtful! This entire project gracefully centers the nuances of gender, what it is and isn't, while artfully exploring leadership at its intersections. Each chapter intentionally disrupts the “story most often told” in leadership--research, development, and practice--and places concerted attention on identities, lived experiences, and perspectives about leadership that have historically not been prioritized. Sherylle J. Tan and Lisa DeFrank-Cole, alongside each chapter author, challenges readers to think beyond the current leadership milieu to imagine, better yet, demand what could be! I am excited for the impact this work will have on the understanding and practice of leadership!’ -- Natasha Turman, University of Michigan, US‘Once again Sherylle J. Tan and Lisa DeFrank-Cole have made an important contribution to the continuing conversation of gender and leadership. This edited collection pays particular attention to the context within which these discussions are being held, especially the changing conceptions of gender and the changing language around gender. Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject in provocative ways, and map out the potential directions of travel. They are relevant but also visionary. This unique Research Agenda addresses salient current issues in evaluation research, offering a broad perspective on the role of evaluation in society. International expert contributors explore how evaluation research is not only academic research engaged in practical problem-solving, but is also research that takes a critical look at this engagement, providing inspiration for reflexivity among evaluators. Drawing on a range of perspectives, including sociology, organization theory, psychoanalytic theory, and feminism, chapters analyse examples of how evaluation works in a number of arenas, such as education, research, and voluntary work.Taking a critical look at evaluation as a social phenomenon, this Research Agenda will be a useful resource for scholars and students of evaluation, public administration and management, and public policy. It will also be beneficial in helping practitioners and researchers to understand the major emerging issues within the field of evaluation.Trade Review‘Editor Peter Dahler-Larsen has assembled a worthy multi-faceted volume, A Research Agenda for Evaluation, conveyed through the varied lenses of an exceptional international group of evaluation scholars. Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd A Research Agenda for Regional and Local

Book SynopsisElgar Research Agendas outline the future of research in a given area. Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject in provocative ways, and map out the potential directions of travel. They are relevant but also visionary. This insightful Research Agenda takes a thematic approach to analysing reform in regional and local government, exploring central concepts such as devolution, Europeanisation and globalisation. Expert contributors address key trends in structural change and reorganisation, subnational autonomy and decentralisation, metropolitan governance, and multi-level governance. Chapters explore managerial innovations and reform, democratic participation and leadership, and populism at local and regional levels. Identifying promising research avenues in these fields, the Research Agenda reflects on the effects of the 2008 global financial crisis, and potential lessons that are arising for subnational governments following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. It concludes that although the 2008 crisis has had some impact on territorial governance, there is greater continuity than radical change.Addressing particular themes and trends from a comparative perspective, this Research Agenda will be critical reading for scholars and students of international politics, urban studies and regional studies.Trade Review‘The volume offers rich research ideas relating to the study of regional and local governance dynamics from a comparative perspective.’ -- Antonia Baraggia, Publius: The Journal of Federalism‘I cannot help but enthuse about this book. Each of the chapters is well written. They are accessible for students but are also of value to researchers. The comprehensive literature reviews, mapping how the research in each topic area has evolved, reinforces pre-existing knowledge. Yet, the comparative nature of these reviews may introduce aspects previously unconsidered by those who study single countries.’ -- Alistair Jones, Journal of Urban Affairs‘This book provides a great starting point for those wanting to think through the multiple research issues confronting local and regional government. Whether the focus is economic performance, public service management, reorganisation or public engagement, the various chapters provide up-to-date and insightful accounts on how things stand in light of the long-term impact of the financial crisis of 2007/8.‘ -- Gerry Stoker, University of Southampton, UK‘One of the defining features of post-war Western development has been the rise of regional and local autonomy. How has the 2008 financial crisis intervened with long-term trends in subnational governance? This excellent collection brings together top scholars in the field to take up this question.
