Reproductive medicine Books
Berghahn Books Islam and New Kinship
Book SynopsisAssisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization have provoked global controversy and ethical debate. This book provides a groundbreaking investigation into those debates in the Islamic Middle East, simultaneously documenting changing ideas of kinship and the evolving role of religious authority in the region through a combination of in-depth field research in Lebanon and an exhaustive survey of the Islamic legal literature. Lebanon, home to both Sunni and Shiite Muslim communities, provides a valuable site through which to explore the overall dynamism and diversity of global Islamic debate. As this book shows, Muslim perspectives focus on the moral propriety of such controversial procedures as the use of donor sperm and eggs as well as surrogacy arrangements, which are allowed by some authorities using surprising and innovative legal arguments. These arguments challenge common stereotypes of the rigidity and conservatism of Islamic law and compel us to question conTrade Review “As Clarke notes, he explicitly did not intend for this research to comprise an ethnography of reproductive technologies in Lebanon. As such, this book serves as an excellent companion piece to medical anthropological studies in the region that are more clinic-based and experiential, for example, those of Marcia Inhorn. This book will be of considerable interest to scholars in the areas of gender and health, reproduction and reproductive technologies, Islamicists, and those engaged in comparative kinship studies. It would be a valuable and effective text for use in seminars and most appropriate for graduate students or advanced (honors) undergraduates.” · Contemporary Islam “Social scientists interested in any of these areas of study will benefit from familiarizing themselves with Clarke’s work. Those who are particularly interested in the study of reproductive technologies will find notions of milk kinship and adoption aversion useful in considering how ART is contextualized globally. Students of kinship will benefit from this text because it provides a case study of how a culturally relative approach to kinship enriches our understanding of the meanings and markers of the important relationships within a culture/religious tradition.” · Contemporary Sociology “The book is theoretically sophisticated, beautifully written, and brilliantly cohesive. The author is to be commended for his unflagging engagement with a complex Islamic legal literature, with interviewees supplying him with massive tomes in Arabic containing their legal positions. Most admirable is the endeavour to analyse the perspectives revealed ‘on their own terms’ within the societies that produce them.” · JRAI “…a fascinating and well-written book…By thinking through anthropological and Islamic debates of assisted conception in a Middle Eastern setting, Islam and New Kinship is highly valuable for students and scholars interested in medical anthropology, kinship studies, Middle Eastern studies, as well as science and technology studies.” · Social Anthropology/Anthropologie sociale “In this very detailed examination... Clarke presents a nuanced look at how both individuals and institutions interpret or manipulate Islamic teachings and concepts…the book represents an outstanding piece of scholarship for anyone interested in Islam, kinship, medical anthropology, or gender studies. Highly recommended.” · Choice “This book is a mine of information, carefully researched and lucidly argued. It opens up a fascinating problematic (that is, a can of worms) that only Muslims (all Muslims, male and female) need seriously to address over the coming decades. The shape of future Muslim attitudes depends on the outcomes of this.” · Journal of Beliefs and Values “An accomplished piece of work on several levels. Islam and New Kinship not only provides a detailed and nuanced account of how Islamic legal scholars and medical practitioners in Lebanon respond to new reproductive and genetic technologies, but also reveals what is missing from ‘new’ kinship studies. It is a compelling read and a must, not only for scholars of kinship and religion but for anybody with an interest in the rich complexity of contemporary Lebanese society.” · Jeannette Edwards, University of ManchesterTable of Contents Acknowledgements Note on transliteration List of abbreviations Introduction PART I: CONTEXTS Prologue: Ahmed’s story Chapter 1. ‘New kinship’, new reproductive technologies and ideas of kinship in the Middle East Chapter 2. Berghahn Books Problems of Conception
Book SynopsisThe Biotechnology Act in Norway, one of the most restrictive in Europe, forbids egg donation and surrogacy and has rescinded the anonymity clause with respect to donor insemination. Thus, it limits people's choice as to how they can procreate within the boundaries of the nation state. The author pursues this significant datum ethnographically and addresses the issues surrounding contemporary biopolitics in Norway. This involves investigating such fundamental questions as the relation between individual and society, meanings of kinship and relatedness, the moral status of the embryo and the role of science, religion and ethics in state policies. Even though the book takes reproductive technologies as its focus, it reveals much about vital processes that are central to contemporary Norwegian society.Trade Review “This is a very interesting and well written book. The first chapter is one of the best written ‘opening speeches’ I have read in a very, very long time. It is an important contribution to the comparative study of kinship/biotechnology/law.” · Annika Rabo, University of StockholmTable of Contents Preface and acknowledgements Chapter 1. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Desire and Passion for a Child
Book SynopsisIn this book, Patricia Alkolombre explores the desire for a child from a contemporary psychoanalytic perspective, and covers the questions raised in the face of new resources offered by reproductive medicine. This volume reviews traditional psychoanalytic conceptualisations from the perspective of gender theories and analyses theoretical hegemonies related to the desire and passion for a child. Alkolombre discusses how the passion to have a child' is a key aspect of motherhood, characterised by emotional intensity, persistence, and self-sacrificial aspects. The book is divided into three sections: Part One deals with the desire and passion to have a child, while Part Two focuses on the impact of reproductive techniques, as well as the ever-changing role of parenthood in the modern day. Throughout these fascinating chapters, clinical vignettes of both individual and couple analyses span topics such as mourning, the use of reproductive technology, the anonymity of gamete dTrade Review'In The Desire and The Passion for a Child, Patricia Alkolombre offers a deep dive into the implications of emerging reproductive technology for our understanding of a potential parent’s relationship to sexuality, the procreative body, and a child’s origin story. She portrays the necessity of mourning female and male infertility, a lost pregnancy, and altered experiences of self and intimate other. This is an important book for the psychoanalytic clinician who enters the contemporary biopsychosocial terrain where desire turns to passion. While new technology supports new family constellations, it also risks the creation of a child at any cost.'Harriet Wolfe, M.D., President, International Psychoanalytical Association'In this excellent book, Patricia Alkolombre offers us a contemporary psychoanalytic approach to current parenting. Clinical, theoretical, and ethical problems of assisted fertilization circulate throughout the text also grasping on the meanings of sterility in women and men. Key issues such as mourning, abortion, bodies, donation of gametes and surrogate maternity are focused framed in a biotechnological offer in vertiginous development. In this complex journey the author differentiates the desire for a child from the passion for a child, the latter as a search for narcissistic gratification that leads some women to resort without limit to assisted fertilization. This volume will enrich readers, whether psychoanalysts or not, interested in this crucial topic.'Leticia Glocer Fiorini M.D., Chair of Sexual and Gender Diversity Studies Committee, International Psychoanalytic Association IPATable of ContentsIntroduction PART I About the desire and the passion for a child 1 Revisiting desire for a child 2 When desire for a child becomes passion for a child PART II Techniques in the light of psychoanalysis 3 Into psychoanalytic clinical work 4 Psychoanalysis and reproductive techniques PART III Historical (in) fertility 5 First conceptions 6 Fertility myths and rituals

Palgrave MacMillan UK Relative Strangers Family Life Genes and Donor Conception Palgrave Macmillan Studies in Family and Intimate Life
Book SynopsisWith reproductive medical technologies becoming more accessible, assisted donor conception is raising new and important questions about family life. Using in-depth interviews the authors explore the lived reality of donor conception and offer insights into the complexities of these new family relationships.Trade Review"This book isn't a dry academic tome ... it is accessible and can be read by anyone with an interest in donor conception. I would strongly recommend it to parents of donor-conceived children to whom it could be enormously reassuring." - Sarah Norcross, BioNews "The insights gained in the in-depth interviews with members of lesbian and heterosexual couple families who have used donor conception are beyond anything I have ever come across before, and should be enormously helpful in re-assessing both the policy and practice of the range of support that needs to be in place at every stage of the donor conception family journey." - Olivia's View blog "The book is very interesting and a good illustration of some of some of the changes, dynamics and fluidities of family life." - Network: Magazine of the British Sociological Association "Intelligent and informed reflection on how the interviewees themselves have come to work on the relevant issues, how their own uses of metaphors relating to genes and the contribution of donor gametes have been shaped by their experiences, and how this work reflects on family life and kinship more widely." - Journal of Social Policy 'It is not often that an academic book can be described as truly delightful, but, in the case of Relative Strangers such a description is certainly appropriate.' Duke University Press The Wombs of Women
Book SynopsisFrançoise Vergès examines the scandal of white doctors forcefully terminating the pregnancies of thousands of poor women of color on the French island of Réunion during the 1960s, showing how they resulted from the legacies of the racialized violence of slavery and colonialism.Trade Review“In her wonderful book, Françoise Vergès creates a methodology for teasing out the various strands within which French Republican thought has sustained gender, class, and racial inequality. In doing so, she conceptualizes a new lexicon for postcolonial critique. Duke University Press The Wombs of Women
Book SynopsisIn the 1960s thousands of poor women of color on the (post)colonial French island of Reunion had their pregnancies forcefully terminated by white doctors; the doctors operated under the pretext of performing benign surgeries, for which they sought government compensation. When the scandal broke in 1970, the doctors claimed to have been encouraged to perform these abortions by French politicians who sought to curtail reproduction on the island, even though abortion was illegal in France. In The Wombs of Women—first published in French and appearing here in English for the first time—Françoise Vergès traces the long history of colonial state intervention in black women’s wombs during the slave trade and postslavery imperialism as well as in current birth control politics. She examines the women’s liberation movement in France in the 1960s and 1970s, showing that by choosing to ignore the history of the racialization of women’s wombs, FreTrade Review“In her wonderful book, Françoise Vergès creates a methodology for teasing out the various strands within which French Republican thought has sustained gender, class, and racial inequality. New York University Press Brown Bodies White Babies
Book SynopsisBrown Bodies, White Babies focuses on the practice of cross-racial gestational surrogacy, in which a woman - through in-vitro fertilization using the sperm and egg of intended parents or donors - carries a pregnancy for intended parents of a different race. Focusing on the racial differences between parents and surrogates, this book is interested in how reproductive technologies intersect with race, particularly when brown bodies produce white babies. While the potential of reproductive technologies is far from pre-determined, the ways in which these technologies are currently deployed often serve the interests of dominant groups, through the creation of white, middle-class, heteronormative families. Laura Harrison, providing an important understanding of the work of women of color as surrogates, connects this labor to the history of racialized reproduction in the United States. Cross-racial surrogacy is one end of a continuum in which dominant groups rely on the reproductive potentialTrade Review[A] refreshingly new take...add[ing] complexity to the well-trod feminist discussion... * Signs *Brown Bodies, White Babies reveals fresh insights on the politics of reproduction in the United States and globally by investigating the racialized and gendered meanings of kinship in the context of cross-racial gestational surrogacy when a surrogate is not the same race as the intended parents. Despite surrogacys seemingly radical potential, Harrison brilliantly shows how these arrangements reinforce genetic determinism, white privilege, and the biological concept of race. An important and provocative contribution to critical analyses of assisted reproduction. -- Dorothy Roberts, author of Killing the Black Body: Race, Reproduction, and The Meaning of LibertyAn indispensable contribution, this book historicizes the ideologies of race and racial transmission that cut through the heart of reproductive labor right from wet nursing in the emergent American colonies to present-day cross-racial surrogacy. New York University Press Freezing Fertility
Book SynopsisWelcomed as liberation and dismissed as exploitation, egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) has rapidly become one of the most widely-discussed and influential new reproductive technologies of this century. In Freezing Fertility, Lucy van de Wiel takes us inside the world of fertility preservationwith its egg freezing parties, contested age limits, proactive anticipations and equity investmentsand shows how the popularization of egg freezing has profound consequences for the way in which female fertility and reproductive aging are understood, commercialized and politicized.Beyond an individual reproductive choice for people who may want to have children later in life, Freezing Fertility explores how the rise of egg freezing also reveals broader cultural, political and economic negotiations about reproductive politics, gender inequities, age normativities and the financialization of healthcare. Van de Wiel investigates these issues by analyzing a wide range of sourcesvaTrade ReviewA timely and powerful book … a jam-packed guide to the politics of reproductive ageing in a world of rapid social and technological change … will be of interest to a wide audience, from general readership to students, policymakers and social scientists working on reproduction and family politics. * BioNews *Lucy van de Wiel’s Freezing Fertility brilliantly investigates fertile embodiment through a transnational exploration of human fertility preservation practices. Egg freezing, a recent biotechnological innovation, enhances corporeal capacities and transforms the temporality of everyday life. Grappling with the social, ethical, and economic complexities of egg freezing, she offers a vital contribution to debates about gender, reproduction, and aging. -- Rene Almeling, author of Sex Cells: The Medical Market for Eggs and SpermThis volume is a brilliant foray into the contested world of egg freezing, taking readers on a journey with the human egg from its in vivo existence in ovaries and wombs to ex vivo sites of cryostorage, finance, and experimentation. Cornell University Press Substantial Relations
Book SynopsisSubstantial Relations examines global reproductive medicine in India, focusing on in vitro fertilization. Since the 1970s, India has played a central but shifting role in shaping global reproductive medicinefrom a provider of raw material, to a producer of knowledge and technology, to a creator of a thriving medical market that attracts patients from all over the world. Relying on archival material and oral history, Substantial Relations traces the path of this transnational historical trajectory. This book also examines the contemporary making of IVF in Delhi. Drawing on ethnographic research in homes, hospitals, and laboratories, Sandra Bärnreuther provides deep insights into the intricacies of clinical life and everyday experience by depicting IVF users'' quest for offspring and their fears of establishing unwanted ties, as well as the minute engagements of clinicians and laboratory staff with reproductive substances.Thinking through substancesmTrade ReviewBärnreuther (Univ. of Lucerne, Switzerland) skillfully uses anthropological fieldwork (conducted from 2010 to 2017) and archival research to describe and analyze this growing IVF medical system. * Choice *The book is a recommended read for all scholars working in the area of infertility/fertility and kinship studies. * Medical Anthropology Quarterly *Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. Manchester University Press Birth Controlled: Selective Reproduction and
Book SynopsisBirth controlled analyses the world of selective reproduction – the politics of who gets to legitimately reproduce the future – through a cross-cultural analysis of three modes of ‘controlling’ birth: contraception, reproductive violence and repro-genetic technologies. It argues that as fertility rates decline worldwide, the fervour to control fertility, and fertile bodies, does not dissipate; what evolves is the preferred mode of control. Although new technologies like those that assist conception or allow genetic selection may appear to be an antithesis of other violent versions of population control, this book demonstrates that both are part of the same continuum. All population control policies target and vilify women (Black women in particular), and coerce them into subjecting their bodies to state and medical surveillance; Birth controlled argues that assisted reproductive technologies and repro-genetic technologies employ a similar and stratified burden of blame and responsibility based on gender, race, class and caste. To empirically and historically ground the analysis, the book includes contributions from two postcolonial nations, South Africa and India, examining interactions between the history of colonialism and the economics of neoliberal markets and their influence on the technologies and politics of selective reproduction. The book provides a critical, interdisciplinary and cutting-edge dialogue around the interconnected issues that shape reproductive politics in an ostensibly ‘post-population control’ era. The contributions draw on a breadth of disciplines ranging from gender studies, sociology, medical anthropology, politics and science and technology studies to theology, public health and epidemiology, facilitating an interdisciplinary dialogue around the interconnected modes of controlling birth and practices of neo-eugenics.Table of ContentsForeword - Betsy HartmannIntroduction – Amrita PandePrologue: Malika Ndlovu Part I: Birth projects1 Birth Projects, Selective reproduction and neoliberal eugenics – Amrita Pande 2 Spectres of biological politics: conversations within and across South Asia – Sushmita Chatterjee, Deboleena Roy, Banu Subramaniam 3 Ved Garbh Vihar: Hindutva’s latest neo-eugenic repronational project – Vasudha Mohanka 4 Racialising ancient skeletons: how haplotypes are mobilised in the re-writing of origin stories in the Indian media – Devika Prakash5 Bio-power and assisted reproductive technologies in the global south: An ethical response from South Africa – Manitza KotzePart II: Birth violated6 Injectable contraceptives: technologies of power and language of rights – C. Nova Science Publishers Inc Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): Clinical
Book SynopsisThis book provides comprehensive information on Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), its clinical considerations, outcomes and potential health effects. Male and female infertility is increasing all over the world. The basic techniques of assisted reproduction like ovulation control and intrauterine insemination are ineffective if the sperm quality or number is inadequate. The advanced fertilization techniques are in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and ICSI. In 15% cases of infertility, IVF results in total failed fertilization; therefore, ICSI must be used. Some clinics exclusively use ICSI for all infertility patients due to its reliability of fertilization outcome or to avoid total fertilization failure. ICSI was first used in humans in 1992. Since then, tremendous advances have been made in assisted reproductive technology. ICSI has enabled even those men who have rare sperm in their testes to father a biological child. If no sperm are observed in the ejaculate, in almost all cases, they can be recovered from the testicles. Such retrieved sperm can only be used by ICSI. Therefore, its understanding is essential not only for medical staff but also for patients suffering from infertility. This book is highly recommended for patients suffering from infertility or currently undergoing infertility treatment. It explains the factors affecting ICSI success rate. In ICSI, the embryologist picks a sperm for injection to fertilize oocytes whereas in intrauterine insemination and IVF, one sperm penetrates naturally. This manual selection of sperm has raised concerns especially in those patients suffering from severe male factor infertility. The nature of sperm defects varies and could be congenital, acquired or genetic. Children born through ICSI are, therefore, considered at higher risk of carrying the defect. Many investigations have been carried out to compare incidence of the defects between children conceived naturally and conceived through ICSI. Additional technologies have been developed to ensure the birth of a normal child. These include pre-implantation genetic testing and non-invasive prenatal testing. This book addresses these concerns and explains the health effects on children born through ICSI. This book is very useful for medical students, andrologists, embryologists, nurses or anyone else interested in learning basic or advanced knowledge of assisted reproductive technology, especially ICSI. The authors of the chapters of this book are highly experienced and from different parts of the world. Many of them are directing very busy ART laboratories at leading infertility clinics in the United States of America, Canada and the Middle East.Table of ContentsFor more information visit: https://novapublishers.com/shop/intracytoplasmic-sperm-injection-icsi-clinical-considerations-outcomes-and-potential-health-effects/

Berghahn Books, Incorporated Nameless Relations: Anonymity, Melanesia and
Book Synopsis Based on the author's fieldwork at assisted conception clinics in England in the mid-1990s, this is the first ethnographic study of the new procreative practices of anonymous ova and embryo donation. Giving voice to both groups of women participating in the demanding donation experience – the donors on the one side and the ever-hopeful IVF recipients on the other – Konrad shows how one dimension of the new reproductive technologies involves an unfamiliar relatedness between nameless and untraceable procreative strangers. Offsetting informants’ local narratives against traditional Western folk models of the ‘sexed’ reproductive body, the book challenges some of the basic assumptions underlying conventional biomedical discourse of altruistic donation that clinicians and others promote as “gifts of life.” It brings together a wide variety of literatures from social anthropology, social theory, cultural studies of science and technology, and feminist bioethics to discuss the relationship between recent developments in biotechnology and changing conceptions of personal origins, genealogy, kinship, biological ownership and notions of bodily integrity.Trade Review “This work makes a significant contribution to the field of reproductive technology studies given its in-depth ethnographic research …a work of ethnographic and analytical excellence.” · Reviews in Anthropology “This book is thorough..a comprehensive account of the complicated and at time ambivalent voices of women involved in donating and receiving ova. It will be useful for advanced undergraduate and graduate-level classes.” · Medical Anthropology Quarterly “…an important contribution for anthropologists and those in [many] other disciplines…Konrad has managed to critically explicate the complex and intimate relationship that binds anonymous donor with anonymous recipient.” · American Anthropologist “The comparative use of Melanesian ethnography and anthropological theorizing creates a challenging analytical undertaking in this [thought-provoking] study. Poppema shares intimate details about her own life and work in an effort to promote better understanding of the reality of abortion and the violent forces that threaten a woman's right to choose. She offers readers a view from the clinic operating room as well as valuable information on the abortion pill known as RU 486, for which her clinic has served as an FDA test site.
