Book SynopsisTrade Review"This book is frankly opinionated, though far from close-minded, and joins analytic arguments with appeals to sensibility... Time and again, Purdy points out double standards, juxtaposing the ways in which we frame and judge women's behavior with the ways in which we frame and judge behavior elsewhere." -- Margaret Olivia Little, Kennedy Institute of Ethics, Women and Health

MD - Duke University Press Biological Relatives
Book SynopsisSarah Franklin explores the history and future of in vitro fertilization (IVF) thirty-five years and five million babies after its initial success as a form of technologically-assisted human reproduction.Trade Review"A model of what interdisciplinary intelligence can accomplish. Across several fields Biological Relatives shows how specific platforms or tools in the history of reproduction, kinship, and gender have provided discursive liftoff for further sites of knowledge and exploration. One of the strengths of this gripping account lies in that specificity, beginning with the iconic IVF and its epistemic work: a brilliant and exhilarating reprise of what we thought we knew, but now know differently."—Marilyn Strathern, University of Cambridge"Hurtled with eggs, sperm, embryos, technicians, scientists, photographers, and critters of many species, including humans, we are all redone by the histories and practices of IVF. Sarah Franklin makes vivid how IVF is a kin-making, person-making, and world-making engine, one that refabricates the facts of life into bundles of kin and bundles of kin into facts of life. No wonder I read Biological Relatives as a fabulous work of SF in all its tones—string figures, speculative fabulation, science fact. Because Franklin's multigeneric gifts are generous, my debts are large."—Donna Haraway, University of California, Santa Cruz"[A] well-researched, conceptually rigorous, and thoroughly interdisciplinary discussion of new reproductive technologies. . . . This cutting-edge volume is essential for scholars and practitioners interested in the ethics of reproductive technologies, technology theory case studies, sex/gender reinforcing and challenging practices, and medical humanities in general. . . . Highly recommended. Upper division undergraduates and above." -- S. M. Weiss * Choice *“Being well informed about these areas of contemporary biology requires familiarity with both natural and social sciences. Sarah Franklin’s Biological Relatives provides a much-needed account of one such area…. Her range is wide, but her examples are precise and disciplined. Reading the book illuminates ways to see across divides, and there are some striking images along the way.” -- Charis Thompson * Science Magazine *“Biological Relatives presents a complex examination of a topic that has been too often simplified or fragmented and provides feminist scholars of science with a new framework through which to analyze the relationship between biology and technology in a post-IVF age. . . . The book’s willingness to dwell with the many ambiguities of IVF—what Franklin refers to as its ‘curious’ elements—thus makes an important contribution to our understanding of what it means to live in a post-IVF age.” -- Sara DiCaglio * Configurations *“Biological Relatives goes far beyond earlier studies to provide new and valuable insight into the history of IVF. These include new perspectives on both complex evolutionary processes of biology and the overall historical descriptions about feminist debates over IVF in connection with the notion of kinship and women’s actual voices. Finally, Franklin successfully cultivates a novel and constructive account of the dynamics, complexity and hybridity in the history of IVF in connection with related science fields and social and cultural areas.” -- Kaori Sasak * Medical History *“Franklin’s rigorously researched and exhaustive look at ‘the normalization of I.V.F.’ grounds the procedure firmly in technology and science, not to mention philosophy, anthropology, agriculture, feminism, and history.” -- Sarah Erdreich * Lilith *"Biological Relatives would fit well in advanced undergraduate courses in medical anthropology and sociology, gender and reproduction, feminist theory, and social theories of technology. It will also be invaluable in graduate coursework across a variety of disciplines, including anthropology, sociology, feminist studies, and science and technology studies, as well as for researchers and clinicians who work at the perpetually unstable frontiers of reproduction, bioinnovation, and kinship." -- Crista Craven & Thomas Tierney * American Ethnologist *“Not since Donna J. Haraway’s 1997 book, Modest_Witness@Second_Millennium.FemaleMan©Meets_OncoMouse™ have I read such a major contribution to theorizing technoscience. … The book leaves us with a cultural rendering and an archeology of a technology, from the ambivalent relations with its form as a reproductive technology to the many ways that IVF is also a tool itself in the coevolving biotech industries. IVF is not only biologically reproductive, but also technologically reproductive. This book should be read by anyone interested in theorizing biotechnology and the future of social relations.” -- Laura Mamo * American Journal of Sociology *“Biological Relatives amounts to an impressive and important exploration of the curious world, effects, and various 'lives' of IVF. It is a book that dares to be multidimensional and non-reductionist, and which shows the complexity of relationships, biological and technological as well as familial. … [A] much-needed, important, and sensitive analysis of IVF and the changed relationships it introduces to biology, technology, and kinship.” -- Petra Nordqvist * Technology and Culture *[T]his exciting book delivers a powerful theory of biology and technology that challenges scholars of Science and Technology Studies, the anthropology of kinship, and gender and feminist theory to consider and respond. It will be a must-read for any scholar of IVF,synthetic biology, the anthropology of science and nature, or gender studies.” -- Ian Vincent McGonigle * Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments ix Introduction. Duke University Press The Wombs of Women
Book SynopsisFrançoise Vergès examines the scandal of white doctors forcefully terminating the pregnancies of thousands of poor women of color on the French island of Réunion during the 1960s, showing how they resulted from the legacies of the racialized violence of slavery and colonialism.Trade Review“In her wonderful book, Françoise Vergès creates a methodology for teasing out the various strands within which French Republican thought has sustained gender, class, and racial inequality. In doing so, she conceptualizes a new lexicon for postcolonial critique. Duke University Press The Wombs of Women
Book SynopsisIn the 1960s thousands of poor women of color on the (post)colonial French island of Reunion had their pregnancies forcefully terminated by white doctors; the doctors operated under the pretext of performing benign surgeries, for which they sought government compensation. When the scandal broke in 1970, the doctors claimed to have been encouraged to perform these abortions by French politicians who sought to curtail reproduction on the island, even though abortion was illegal in France. In The Wombs of Women—first published in French and appearing here in English for the first time—Françoise Vergès traces the long history of colonial state intervention in black women’s wombs during the slave trade and postslavery imperialism as well as in current birth control politics. She examines the women’s liberation movement in France in the 1960s and 1970s, showing that by choosing to ignore the history of the racialization of women’s wombs, FreTrade Review“In her wonderful book, Françoise Vergès creates a methodology for teasing out the various strands within which French Republican thought has sustained gender, class, and racial inequality. New York University Press Brown Bodies White Babies
Book SynopsisBrown Bodies, White Babies focuses on the practice of cross-racial gestational surrogacy, in which a woman - through in-vitro fertilization using the sperm and egg of intended parents or donors - carries a pregnancy for intended parents of a different race. Focusing on the racial differences between parents and surrogates, this book is interested in how reproductive technologies intersect with race, particularly when brown bodies produce white babies. While the potential of reproductive technologies is far from pre-determined, the ways in which these technologies are currently deployed often serve the interests of dominant groups, through the creation of white, middle-class, heteronormative families. Laura Harrison, providing an important understanding of the work of women of color as surrogates, connects this labor to the history of racialized reproduction in the United States. Cross-racial surrogacy is one end of a continuum in which dominant groups rely on the reproductive potentialTrade Review[A] refreshingly new take...add[ing] complexity to the well-trod feminist discussion... * Signs *Brown Bodies, White Babies reveals fresh insights on the politics of reproduction in the United States and globally by investigating the racialized and gendered meanings of kinship in the context of cross-racial gestational surrogacy when a surrogate is not the same race as the intended parents. Despite surrogacys seemingly radical potential, Harrison brilliantly shows how these arrangements reinforce genetic determinism, white privilege, and the biological concept of race. An important and provocative contribution to critical analyses of assisted reproduction. -- Dorothy Roberts, author of Killing the Black Body: Race, Reproduction, and The Meaning of LibertyAn indispensable contribution, this book historicizes the ideologies of race and racial transmission that cut through the heart of reproductive labor right from wet nursing in the emergent American colonies to present-day cross-racial surrogacy. A must-read for any student of reproductive justice. -- Sharmila Rudrappa, author of Discounted Life: The Price of Global Surrogacy in IndiaIn a refreshingly clear, engaging, jargon-free voice, Harrison introduces readers to the role of race in the discourse surrounding surrogacy in the United States. Her interdisciplinary, qualitative analysis of cross-racial surrogacy in popular media, legal cases and on websites provides an important addition to the sociology and anthropology of reproduction. -- Elly Teman, author of Birthing a Mother: The Surrogate Body and the Pregnant SelfLaura Harrisons bookBrown Bodies, White Babies: The Politics of Cross-Racial Surrogacyprovides readers with a comprehensive and insightful analysis of surrogacy using both intersectional theory and discourse analysis, before concluding with a call for activism and engagement. * Hypatia Reviews *

New York University Press Freezing Fertility
Book SynopsisWelcomed as liberation and dismissed as exploitation, egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) has rapidly become one of the most widely-discussed and influential new reproductive technologies of this century. In Freezing Fertility, Lucy van de Wiel takes us inside the world of fertility preservationwith its egg freezing parties, contested age limits, proactive anticipations and equity investmentsand shows how the popularization of egg freezing has profound consequences for the way in which female fertility and reproductive aging are understood, commercialized and politicized.Beyond an individual reproductive choice for people who may want to have children later in life, Freezing Fertility explores how the rise of egg freezing also reveals broader cultural, political and economic negotiations about reproductive politics, gender inequities, age normativities and the financialization of healthcare. Van de Wiel investigates these issues by analyzing a wide range of sourcesvaTrade ReviewA timely and powerful book … a jam-packed guide to the politics of reproductive ageing in a world of rapid social and technological change … will be of interest to a wide audience, from general readership to students, policymakers and social scientists working on reproduction and family politics. * BioNews *Lucy van de Wiel’s Freezing Fertility brilliantly investigates fertile embodiment through a transnational exploration of human fertility preservation practices. Egg freezing, a recent biotechnological innovation, enhances corporeal capacities and transforms the temporality of everyday life. Her germinal analysis offers powerful interpretations of emerging cultural anxieties when we interrupt the imperative of ‘a biological clock’. -- Lisa Jean Moore, author of Catch and Release: The Enduring Yet Vulnerable Horseshoe CrabIn this beautifully-written and thought-provoking book, Lucy van de Wiel follows the egg from ovary to freezer and beyond. Grappling with the social, ethical, and economic complexities of egg freezing, she offers a vital contribution to debates about gender, reproduction, and aging. -- Rene Almeling, author of Sex Cells: The Medical Market for Eggs and SpermThis volume is a brilliant foray into the contested world of egg freezing, taking readers on a journey with the human egg from its in vivo existence in ovaries and wombs to ex vivo sites of cryostorage, finance, and experimentation. Offering the single best analysis of the precarious relationship between fertility, reproductive technology, and women’s aging, Freezing Fertility is a must-read for gender, STS, and cultural studies scholars, as well as anyone interested in the future of assisted reproduction. -- Marcia C.

Cornell University Press Substantial Relations
Book SynopsisSubstantial Relations examines global reproductive medicine in India, focusing on in vitro fertilization. Since the 1970s, India has played a central but shifting role in shaping global reproductive medicinefrom a provider of raw material, to a producer of knowledge and technology, to a creator of a thriving medical market that attracts patients from all over the world. Relying on archival material and oral history, Substantial Relations traces the path of this transnational historical trajectory. This book also examines the contemporary making of IVF in Delhi. Drawing on ethnographic research in homes, hospitals, and laboratories, Sandra Bärnreuther provides deep insights into the intricacies of clinical life and everyday experience by depicting IVF users'' quest for offspring and their fears of establishing unwanted ties, as well as the minute engagements of clinicians and laboratory staff with reproductive substances.Thinking through substancesmTrade ReviewBärnreuther (Univ. of Lucerne, Switzerland) skillfully uses anthropological fieldwork (conducted from 2010 to 2017) and archival research to describe and analyze this growing IVF medical system. * Choice *The book is a recommended read for all scholars working in the area of infertility/fertility and kinship studies. * Medical Anthropology Quarterly *Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. American Academy of Pediatrics Pediatric Collections: Adolescent Health Care:
Book SynopsisPediatric Collections offers what you need to know - original, focused research in a snapshot approach. The teen pregnancy and birth rates have decreased in the US in the past 30 years due to factors such as the availability of more hormonal contraceptive options and delayed initiation of sexual intercourse. However, the US still has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates of industrialized countries. Moreover, disparities in teen pregnancy and birthrates still exist due mostly to social determinants of health. This all points to the increased need of pediatric providers to provide comprehensive reproductive health to all adolescents they care for. Now, more than ever, pediatric providers are counted on to provide evidence-based, comprehensive reproductive and sexual healthcare to the adolescents and young adults they care for. A pediatrician’s goal is to ensure all children grow to be the healthy, successful, and productive adults they were meant to be. Guiding them through the challenge of adolescence and providing comprehensive reproductive health care can help make that goal a reality.Table of ContentsIntroduction by Elizabeth Alderman, MD, FAAP 1 After “The Talk”: Adolescents’ Perspectives Reveal Need for Improvement in Hospital Sexual Health Care Delivery Original Article Original Publication February 1, 20232 Adolescent and Young Adult Menstrual Poverty: A Barrier to Contraceptive Choice Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Justice Original Publication January 1, 20233 Geographic Distribution of Clinical Care for Transgender and Gender-Diverse Youth Original Article Original Publication December 1, 20224 Improving HPV Vaccination Rates in a Racially and Ethnically Diverse Pediatric Population Quality Report Original Publication October 1, 20225 Dobbs v. John Wiley & Sons Inc Assisted Human Reproduction: Psychological and
Book SynopsisWith contributions from: Eric Blyth, Ken Daniels, Julia Feast, Robert Lee, Nina Martin, Alexina McWhinnie, Derek Morgan, Clare Murray, Sharon Pettle, Claire Potter, Jim Richards and Francoise Shenfield The separation of procreation from conception has broadened notions of parenthood and created novel dilemmas. A woman may carry a foetus derived from gametes neither or only one of which came from her or her partner; or she may carry a foetus created using in vitro fertilisation (IVF) with the purpose of handing it to two other parents one, neither or both of whom may be genetically related to the prospective child. Parents may consist of single-sex couples, only one of them genetically related to the child; the prospective mother may be past her menopause; and genetic parenthood after death is now achievable. In a world increasingly reliant on medical science, how can the argument that equates traditional with natural and novel with unnatural/unethical be justified? Should there be legislation, which is notoriously slow to change, in a field driven by dazzling new possibilities at ever faster rate; particularly when restrictions differ from country to country, so that those who can afford it travel elsewhere for their treatment of choice? Whose rights are paramount - the adults hoping to build a family or the prospective child(ren)s future well being? On what basis can apparently competing rights be regulated or adjudicated and how and to what extent can these be enforced in practice?Table of ContentsContributors. Rutgers University Press Bishops and Bodies: Reproductive Care in American
Book SynopsisOne out of every six patients in the United States is treated in a Catholic hospital that follows the policies of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. These policies prohibit abortion, sterilization, contraception, some treatments for miscarriage and gender confirmation, and other reproductive care, undermining hard-won patients’ rights to bodily autonomy and informed decision-making. Drawing on rich interviews with patients and providers, this book reveals both how the bishops’ directives operate and how people inside Catholic hospitals navigate the resulting restrictions on medical practice. In doing so, Bishops and Bodies fleshes out a vivid picture of how The Church’s stance on sex, reproduction, and “life” itself manifests in institutions that affect us all.Trade Review"Shortly after the Supreme Court issued its opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, horrific stories began to emerge from hospitals across the country. To many, these denials of emergency medical care seemed to be an alarming new consequence of the Supreme Court’s decision. Lori Freedman, however, has documented such stories for well over a decade. We would do well to study her work carefully — including her book Bishops and Bodies: Reproductive Care in American Catholic Hospitals — in this critical moment. * Catholics for Choice *“It’s a recipe for disaster—the Catholic Church wants the most births possible, and most American women want to limit their childbearing and protect their health with modern advances in contraception and abortion. Yet in the name of corporate conscience, our anachronistic laws allow Catholic healthcare to require physicians of all faiths to do things that violate medical ethics and often constitute malpractice. Freedman’s compelling research, rich storytelling, and incisive analysis reveal how outrageous Bishop-knows-best medicine really is.” -- Katie Watson * author of Scarlet A: The Ethics, Law and Politics of Ordinary Abortion *"Bishops and Bodies is poised to make a significant impact not just in social science and medical humanities circles, but in broader public conversations about health care, reproductive rights, and the place of religion in society." -- Jessica Martucci * author of Back to the Breast: Natural Motherhood and Breastfeeding in America *Table of ContentsForeword by Debra Stulberg Prologue: Unsafe and Unequal Introduction: Doctrinal Iatrogenesis 1 Growth: How Catholic Health Care Expanded 2 Inferior: How Catholic Directives Contradict Medical Standards 3 Consumer Medicine? Springer Nature Switzerland AG Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Current and Emerging
Book SynopsisNow in a completely newly revised and expanded second edition, this comprehensive text presents the current state of the art in our understanding and management of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the most common hormonal disorder of reproductive aged women. The numerous bothersome symptoms of PCOS include menstrual irregularities, hirsutism, acne, scalp hair thinning, weigh excess and infertility; additionally, as they age, women with PCOS are at a higher risk for metabolic abnormalities such as diabetes and dyslipidemias, as well as for cardiovascular disease and even certain cancers. Despite improvements in our understanding of this condition, the exact cause/s of PCOS remain elusive; genetic, hormonal, metabolic and environmental underpinnings are all suggested as relevant. All chapters have been updated, with eight new chapters added across seven thematic sections. Part one discusses the epidemiology of PCOS in both adults and adolescents. Part two covers the pathophysiology of PCOS, including genetics, the hypothalamo-pituitary-ovarian and the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axes, insulin resistance, inflammation, and obesity. The next three sections present the various management strategies, medical and surgical, for harnessing the symptomatology, including PCOS-related infertility; these chapters include added case material to provide real-world examples of the treatments in action and their efficacy. Part six covers the comorbidities that women with PCOS commonly encounter, such as issues of mental health, sleep disturbances, endometrial hyperplasia, and cancer, as well as examines the economic burden of PCOS. The final section discusses emerging concepts surrounding possible mechanisms and potential therapeutic approaches to PCOS, including angiogenic dysfunction, the role of vitamin D, future potential therapies to targeted AMH signaling. The closing chapter, by familiarizing the readers with the intergenerational implications of PCOS and by raising awareness of potential “ripple effects”, aims at alerting the community on a need for vigilance as regards the health of PCOS progeny. With contributions from leaders in the field, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Second Edition remains the gold-standard text on this common medical condition and a valuable resource for the wide range of healthcare professionals engaged in caring for the women with PCOS (including but not limited to reproductive endocrinologists, gynecologists, family physicians, dermatologists, mental health professionals), for the aspiring women's health providers of tomorrow, and for the researchers who are striving to unravel the mysteries of the complex entity that PCOS is.Table of Contents
