  • Brill Early African Caribbean Newspapers as Archipelagic Media in the Emancipation Age

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisEarly African Caribbean Newspapers as Archipelagic Media in the Emancipation Age shows how two Black-edited periodical publications in the early decades of the nineteenth century worked towards emancipation through medium-specific interventions across material and immaterial lines. More concretely, this book proposes an archipelagic framework for understanding the emancipatory struggles of the Antiguan Weekly Register in St. John’s and the Jamaica Watchman in Kingston. Complicating the prevalent narrative about the Register and the Watchman as organs of the free people of color, this book continues to explore the heterogeneity and evolution of Black newspaper print on the liberal spectrum. As such, Early African Caribbean Newspapers makes the case that the Register and the Watchman participated in shaping the contemporary communication market in the Caribbean. To do so, this study engages deeply with both the textuality and materiality of the newspaper and presents fresh visual material.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Notes on the Text List of Illustrations Introduction: Mediating Emancipation: The Weekly Register and The Jamaica Watchman as Archipelagic Agents of Communication  1 Imaginations of Early Caribbean Newspapers  2 Periodical Studies and the Archipelago  3 Sites of Editorship and Periodical Materiality 1 The Business of Communication  1 Newspaper Markets under Archipelagic Conditions  2 Island Communities and the Local Ties of the Register  3 The Watchman and the Periodical Infrastructures of White Humanitarianism 2 Formats and Layouts in Motion  1 Materiality and the Insignificant Significance of the Register  2 The Transformative Designs of the Watchman  3 Newspaper Formats and Archive Building 3 Personhood and the Poetry Column  1 Poems and Periodical Cultures in the British Caribbean  2 Christmas Book Poems  3 Concubinage and Sentimental Verse  4 West Indian Worthies: Richard Hill and John Boyd  5 Satirical Interjections 4 Recording the Cycles of Black Rebellion  1 Miscellanies of Haiti: “Madame Christophe” and the Logic of the Final Page  2 Sketching Independent Haiti: Richard Hill’s Multi-Mode Auto-Ethnography  3 Editorial Voices on the Turner Rebellion  4 Corresponding Samuel Sharpe’s Confessions Conclusion: The Trajectories of African Caribbean Periodicals Works Cited Index

Book SynopsisAn extraordinary account of the impending closure of the Holden factory in Adelaide. More than the end of a business - it''s the end of an era, of a story, and of a great Australian dream. When Holden signalled that it would close its Adelaide factory, it struck at the very heart of Australian identity. Holden is our car made on our shores. It''s the choice of patriotic rev heads and suburban drivers alike. How could a car that was so beloved - and so popular - be so unprofitable to make? The story of the collapse of Holden is about the people who make and drive the cars; it''s about sustaining industry in Australia; it''s about communities of workers and what happens when the work dries up. And if it''s not quite about the death of an icon - because Holdens will remain on Australian roads for a long time to come - then it''s about what happens when an icon falls to its knees in front of a whole nation. This updated edition features a new chapter.Trade Review. * The Weekend Australian *. * The Last Post *a compassionate insight * City Messenger *a meticulously researched piece of contemporary anthropology * CityMag Adelaide *Review * Mildura Midweek *a persuasive account of SA industry and society over half a century * Sunday Territorian *The focus of this study may be the closure of Holden in 2017, but in broader terms it's a case study of modern economics in action. * Sydney Morning Herald, The Saturday Age *

  • August in Kabul

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC August in Kabul

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisTold through the eyes of witnesses to the fall of Kabul, Walkley award-winning journalist Andrew Quilty's debut book offers a remarkable record of this historic moment. As night fell on 15 August 2021, the Taliban entered Kabul, capital of Afghanistan. After a 20-year conflict with the United States, its Western allies and a proxy Afghan government, the Islamic militant group once aligned with al Qaeda was about to bury yet another foreign foe in the graveyard of empires. And for the US, world superpower, this was yet another foreign disaster. As cities and towns fell to the Taliban in rapid succession, Western troops and embassy staff scrambled to flee a country of which its government had lost control. August in Kabul is the story of how America's longest mission came to an abrupt and humiliating end, told through the eyes of Afghans whose lives have been turned upside down: a young woman who harbours dreams of a university education; a presidential staffer who works desperately toTrade ReviewA gripping account. . . . Quilty’s narrative is powerful and illuminating, weaving together the personal stories of resilience, fear, and hope that unfolded amidst the chaos. He skillfully highlights the complexities of the situation, providing readers with a nuanced understanding of the larger geopolitical forces at play and the far-reaching consequences of foreign intervention in Afghanistan in chronological order. . . . A vital contribution to the historical record, offering readers a remarkable and deeply human perspective on a pivotal moment in recent history. With meticulous research, powerful storytelling, Quilty crafts a narrative that will leave a lasting impact on readers, urging them to reflect on the complexities of war, its aftermath. August in Kabul is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of the Afghan conflict and the profound impact it has had on individuals and nations alike. * Politics Today *By foregrounding the stories of ordinary Afghans who must now pick up the pieces, [August in Kabul] makes for compelling reading. -- Mike Phipps * Labour Hub *A vital eyewitness account by one of the few Western journalists to stay behind in Kabul throughout the evacuation. Quilty brings those hectic days in August to life on the page. * Matthieu Aikins, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of "The Naked Don't Fear the Water" *Few foreign journalists have put in as much time, or as much heart, into Afghanistan over the past decade as Andrew Quilty. His dedication and integrity has been unwavering even in face of great danger, hardship and pressure. His work in exposing the wrongdoing committed by U.S. backed forces is unparalleled, and anyone wishing to understand the West's defeat after 20 years of war should read this book. * Jessica Donati, author of Eagle Down (a Financial Times book of the year) and Wall Street Journal national security reporter. *"Andrew Quilty has written the definitive account of America's catastrophic withdrawal from Afghanistan. Blending courageous on-the-ground reporting with meticulous research, August in Kabul offers an authoritative and devastating answer to anyone who has wondered, How could this have happened? Quilty was not just in the mob outside of the airport as the last American aircraft left Kabul; he'd been living in the country, covering the events leading up to that moment, for the past nine years. Only someone with Quilty's deep experience could have written such a moving and revelatory chronicle, with such empathy and insight." * Luke Mogelson, Journalist and author of 'The Storm is Here' *Few foreign reporters have spent as much time in Afghanistan, or traveled the country as widely, as Andrew Quilty. As readers we are lucky that he was there when the Taliban captured Kabul. This astute and vivid first-hand account of the fall of Kabul, and of the fates of the people caught in the chaos, is a must-read. Quilty writes with passion, honesty and a photographer’s eye for detail. You may know the ending, but he makes everything leading up to it a genuine page-turner. * Sune Engel Rasmussen, Author and correspondent for The Wall Street Journal *The book is a huge inspiration to people both in Afghanistan and outside Afghanistan. . . . An amazing contribution. * New Books Network *Table of ContentsAuthor's Note Map Prologue Part 1: Early August - 'Everything was out of Control' 1. Book SynopsisThe magnificent final book from the bestselling author of the Wolf Hall TrilogyTrade ReviewThe essays in this posthumous collection displays Mantel's extraordinary range and depth as well as the eclecticism of her interests . . . Read together they have a quality of timelessness and prescience * New Statesman, Books of the Year *I miss knowing Hilary Mantel is out there somewhere, exhuming Tudor England. Don't you? At least we can still hear her (strange, slightly magical) voice in this selection from her essays and reviews. Here we meet not just Mantel the Cromwell-catcher, but Mantel the quill-sharp critic of contemporary life, despising expat life in 1980s Saudi Arabia ('When you come across an alien culture you must not automatically respect it. You must sometimes pay it the compliment of hating it') or revelling in the wit of When Harry Met Sally * The Times, Books of the Year *Her long essays on female writers show Mantel at her best . . . Indeed she excels at writing about writing generally . . . And it's on being a writer that Mantel is funniest . . . a guide to the mind of one of the great English novelists of the last half-century * Guardian *Today, she reigns supreme as the queen of the historical novel: the achievement of her Wolf Hall trilogy, twice the recipient of Booker Prizes, is universally acknowledged . . . it's a rich and illuminating coda to both Mantel's life and career . . . Now we're the ones stumbling along behind the spectral figure of Mantel herself, eager for her every last word * Daily Telegraph *We must be grateful that she has left us this collection of pieces, thoughtfully compiled by Pearson . . . Revisiting these pieces, with their fierce wit, their dark humour and compassion, is like hearing the voice of an old friend you had not expected to encounter again . . . A Memoir of My Former Self is a fine testament to that remarkable imagination - a reminder of what a voice we have lost, and how fortunate we are that she left us so much * Observer *How did she manage to write on such a wide range of subjects with such interest, such playfulness and such fidelity to the power of interrogation? . . . Most striking here is Mantel's clear-eyed compassion, her insistence on truthfulness . . . deliciously frank . . . Here are fascinatingly various mediations of that secret self. * Times Literary Supplement *Even her biggest fans will find material new to them . . . The overall effect is to make the reader feel that Mantel is with us still, communicating from beyond the grave. This collection - much more than the sum of its parts - allows us to see how her theories of life and art knit together . . . We get a sense of what shaped her . . . She writes with humour, at times droll, at others razor-sharp. Above all, we get to appreciate the poetry and precision of her prose * New Statesman *Hilary Mantel is worth reading on everything . . . Mordant and witty * Literary Review *The range of subjects is magnificent . . . She can create character in a few lines . . . open at any page for treasures and gold * i Paper *Her death at the age of 70 last September still feels like a tragedy. Open the pages of this book and that feeling hardens into certainty. What a talent we lost. Her sentences leap off the page, her range is exceptional . . . You never waste a moment reading Hilary Mantel . . . There wasn't much she couldn't do * Evening Standard *In this dazzling posthumous collection of previously published and original writings . . . Mantel's idiosyncratic and magisterial voice comes through on every page, carrying readers across an astonishing array of subject matter with ease. This is a treasure * Publishers Weekly *A smart, deft, meticulous, thoughtful writer, with such a grasp of the dark and spidery corners of human nature -- Margaret AtwoodOne of the very greatest of our writers; poetic and profound prose with an incomparable feel for the texture of history -- Simon SchamaMantel was a queen of literature . . . her reign was long, varied and uncontested -- Maggie O’FarrellMantel bristled with intelligence, looked at everything, saw everything . . . Book SynopsisWhat makes science fiction genres better than others at challenging social conventions, especially gender? Are speculative works structured differently when addressed to traditionally under-portrayed individuals or communities? This collection of interviews elicits truly honest and thought-provoking responses that focus on the biographical dimension in speculative fiction, questions of intersectionality, genre (re)definitions and the politicization of fiction. It gives voice to women of different races, nations, classes and sexual orientations who write and edit speculative fiction such as Ellen Datlow, Kathe Koja, Angela Mi Young Hur, Eugen Bacon, and Cat Rambo. The interviews clarify how the junction of genre and gender is a key element to understanding this literary field, while simultaneously contextualizing and theorizing the interview itself, as a literary genre and a research tool.Trade ReviewThis very original collection of carefully led interviews brings together established and new international voices from the field of horror and speculative fiction written by women. Their great variety and the energy they deploy cast new light and raise intriguing and intertwined questions about the category and categories of 'genre' fiction, enriched and complicated by gender and intersectional issues. * Didier Coste, Professor Emeritus, Bordeaux Montaigne University, France *Women of Horror and Speculative Fiction achieves two important aims. It tells of how progressive intersectional politics has performed, disguised as ‘mere’ genre fiction, beneath prescriptions of literariness, whilst unyoking itself from equally prescriptive notions of gender. In horror and speculative fictions, these genre narratives told the Other’s story. But the volume also witnesses this telling, not with a sovereign eye, but through 24 compelling interviews with women writers, who together create a method suitable for our era of auto-fiction and selfie-awareness. To pull off such a double whammy is no mean achievement. This volume will be a significant resource for anyone interested in life. * Simon Frost, Principal Lecturer in English, Bournemouth University, UK *The writers featured in Women of Horror and Speculative Fiction in Their Own Words offer great insight into how their various origins and different kinds of lives inspire their writing, and their choice to write horror and speculative fiction. In a series of conversations, a range of women-identifying authors share their insights and motivations as they challenge social conventions through fiction, interrogate the increasing inclusive interpretations of the categories of gender and genre, and in the most dazzling examples demonstrate the power of anger and fired-up libido to forge innovative acts, invented worlds, and new expressions of identity: 'the great thing about horror,' according to Gemma Files, 'is that you can kill everybody … if you want to.' Read this collection, gathered by Doubinsky and Kkona during the strange early years of Corona virus, if you want a rare peek into thought processes of writers of horror and speculative fiction. * Christina Ann Messa, Lecturer in American Studies, Stanford University, USA *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Introduction 1. Book SynopsisIn 2000, a Chinese woman gave birth to twins in a bamboo grove, trying to avoid detection by the government because she already had two daughters. Two years later, an American couple travelled to Shaoyang to adopt a Chinese toddler they thought had been abandoned. Their understanding had been that China's brutal one-child policy was leading to hundreds of abandoned girls, desperate for the care of adopted parents. What they didn't know - and what award-winning journalist Barbara Demick uncovered in 2007, while working as a correspondent in Beijing - was that their daughter had been snatched from her beloved family and her identical twin. Under China's one-child policy hundreds of poor Chinese were giving up their children due to soaring fines and threats of violence. More sinister still, international demand for adoptees was sky-rocketing, and local officials were forcibly seizing children and trafficking them to orphanages, who were selling them abroad. Daughters of the Bamboo Grove tells the gripping story of separated twins, their respective fates in China and the USA, and Barbara Demick's role in reuniting them against huge odds. Painting a rich portrait of China's history and culture, it asks questions about the roots, impact and consequences of China's one-child policy, the ethics of international adoption, and, ultimately, the assumptions and narratives we hold about the quality of lives lived in the East and the West.

Book SynopsisIn 1981 a young semi-professional footballer - known as `Imam Beckenbauer' for his piety and his dominant style of play - has his career cut short after a confrontation with Turkey's military junta. His name was Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and three decades later he is Turkey's most powerful ruler since Ataturk....' Turkey is a nation obsessed with football. From the flares which cover the stadium with multi-coloured smoke and often bring play to a halt, to the `conductors' - ultras who lead the `walls of sound' at matches, Turkish football has always been an awesome spectacle. And yet, in this politically fraught country, caught between the Middle East and the West, football has also always been so much more. From the fan groups resisting the government in the streets and stands, to ambitious politicians embroiling clubs in Machiavellian shenanigans, football in Turkey is a site of power, anger, and resistance. Journalist and football obsessive Patrick Keddie takes us on a wild journey through Turkey's role in the world's most popular game. He travels from the streets of Istanbul, where fans dodge tear gas and water cannons, to the plains of Anatolia, where women are fighting for their rights to wear shorts and play sports. He meets a gay referee facing death threats, Syrian footballers trying to piece together their shattered dreams, and Kurdish teams struggling to play football amid war. `The Passion' also tells the story of the biggest match-fixing scandal in European football, and sketches its murky connections to the country's leadership. In doing so he lifts the lid on a rarely glimpsed side of modern Turkey. Funny, touching and beautifully observed, this is the story of Turkey as we have never seen it before.Trade Review“Patrick Keddie takes us inside the unceasing Turkish football conversation. The game turns out to be a great device to explain this little understood, football-mad country and its football-mad ruler (who recently banned the foreign word “arena”, forcing many Turkish stadiums to be renamed). The Passion is an energetically researched history of Turkey through football.” * Simon Kuper, Financial Times columnist and author of Football Against the Enemy *“I found The Passion a captivating account of modern Turkey, its passions and frustrations; perhaps it won’t make you fall in love with Turkish football, but it will help you see why it is so central in understanding Turkey’s soul.” * Kaya Genc, author of Under the Shadow: Rage and Revolution in Modern Turkey *the writer’s own passion for his subject is obvious throughout a highly readable and impressively far-reaching work that deserves attention from followers of football and Turkey alike. -- Michael Mackenzie * Ahval News *The depth of research undertaken by Keddie is laudable and what could have easily have turned out to be a dry, academic, turgid tome is thankfully anything but. The book is well thought out and structured and commendably offers a voice to parties who would otherwise struggle to be heard outside of the country. -- Paul McParlan * The Football Pink *Turkish football is an exemplar of a world where football is ever more reflective of our social conditions, and ever more politicised. It now has an exemplary chronicler and interpreter in Patrick Keddie whose The Passion is a fabulous guide to everything from President Erdogan's football obsession to Kurdish resistance through the game. * David Goldblatt, author of The Ball is round: A Global History of Football and The Game of Our Lives: The Meaning and Making of English Football *

Book SynopsisHalf a dozen years after the deadliest earthquake in the history of the Western Hemisphere struck Haiti, the island nation remains in crisis, but the international community no longer seems interested. This immersive and engrossing book, based on five years of research and scores of interviews translated from Haitian Kreyol, gives voice to the continuing struggle of Haitian people to reconstruct their nation from the devastation of the earthquake, and from many decades of political and economic disaster. The earthquake killed more than 200,000, rendered more than a million and a half homeless, and wiped out what little infrastructure existed in the country. But prior to the quake, half the country was illiterate and two-thirds of Haitians lived in poverty. This book makes clear the long genesis of the ongoing crisis and illuminates the depths of the continuing problems, and does so through some of the most marginal and least-heard people in the world. An interview with a restavek--a child sent by poor parents to work as an unpaid servant in a wealthier household--is an example. A recent study determined a figure of 173,000 restaveks--about 8 percent of the population of children.Trade ReviewA book about choosing to live and not to die, to fight, to survive, to thrive. -- Edwidge DanticatNothing is more eloquent than the voice of those who endure and try valiantly to survive. -- Noam ChomskyLavil brings to the fore the voices of the people of the wounded city of Port-au-Prince ... these stories are redolent of both pride and fears of an uncertain future. -- Paul Farmer, author, Haiti After the EarthquakeLavil is a powerful collection of testimonies, which include tales of violence, poverty, and instability but also joy, hustle, and the indomitable will to survive. * Vice *"To read a Voice of Witness book is to feel one's habitual sense of disconnection begin to fall away." -- George Saunders"[Voice of Witness] books are amazing.beautifully produced, with incredible editing and literary sensibility. The hills and the streams would remain, the sun would set as redly on the western sea, but they would not ever be quite the same for us again.’In the 1930s, Norris Davidson was based in London, where he was involved in pioneering work on film, radio and documentaries. By the start of the 1940s, he was working in the wartime Marine Service. Davidson’s informative account of his experience in the Irish Marine Service during the Second World War gives a refreshing insight into many aspects of the defence forces preparing to defend the state to the best of its ability. Often humorous and sometimes moving, it is an engaging account that will appeal to all who are interested in Irish maritime and military history, as well as day-to-day life in 1940s Ireland. Before his death, Norris entrusted the manuscript to ex-naval officer Daire Brunicardi, who has added to the manuscript with a foreword to set the scene, as well as providing some fascinating photos and wartime ephemera.Trade ReviewFeature and author interview in Maritime Ireland Journal * Maritime Ireland Journal *A fascinating read with photographs not seen before of that period on the Naval base at Haulbowline Island in Cork Harbour. * The Echo (Cork) *

Book SynopsisIn 2015, increasing numbers of refugees and migrants, most of them fleeing war-torn homelands, arrived by boat on the shores of Greece, setting off the greatest human displacement in Europe since WWII. As journalists reported horrific mass drownings, an ill-prepared and seemingly indifferent world looked on. Those who reached land needed food, clothing, medicine and shelter, but the international aid system broke down completely. In a way that no one could have anticipated, volunteers arrived to help. Dana Sachs's compelling eyewitness account weaves together the lives of seven individuals and their families - including a British coal miner's daughter, a Syrian mother of six, and a jill-of-all-trades from New Zealand - who became part of this extraordinary effort. The story of their successes, and failures, is unforgettable and inspiring, and a clarion call for resilience and hope in the face of despair.War had shattered people's lives. This is what happened next.Trade ReviewDana Sachs chronicles what happened in Greece when Middle Eastern refugees and volunteers from around the world converged, imperfectly, often chaotically, but with empathy and generosity in ways that mattered and ways that moved me. Sometimes these impromptu communities fail in the end, but the fact that they succeeded for a time, against the odds, can teach us important lessons. -- Rebecca SolnitDana Sachs's vivid, passionate book will shake any faith you once had in international aid organizations. But it will move and inspire you, and bring a lump to your throat, by its portraits of big-hearted women and men from many countries who jumped in to help fellow human beings caught up in one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes of our time. -- Adam HochschildAn urgent, deeply researched, and tender account of the helpers: refugee crisis volunteers (often formerly displaced) who arrive when those responsible for the chaos have turned their backs. Vital, and often infuriating, it is at once global in scale and absolutely singular. This is a story about the drive to nurture and care for our fellow humans, one that stirs us all. -- Dina Nayeri

Book SynopsisA powerful and authoritative selection of critical essays and reviews by poet Padraic Fallon. Skilfully compiled and edited by his son Brian Fallon, this book is published to mark the centenary of his father’s birth, and testifies to the enduring value of literature in the flux of the twenty-first century. Padraic Fallon (1905 – 1974), one of the foremost Irish poets of his generation and a prolific writer of radio plays, was also an active essay-reviewer in the leading periodicals of his day. His literary criticism was incisive and witty, his erudition lightly worn. Disinterred from old files of The Bell, The Dublin Magazine and The Irish Times, his work remains fresh and readable decades on. Fallon writes authoritatively about the key figures of the Literary Revival: Gregory, Yeats, Stephans, Synge, Shaw and O’Casey – he knew many of them – and also of his contemporaries F.R. Higgins and Austin Clarke, with whom he shared a dedicated engagement with the Irish tradition. He comines frank judgements of Eliot, Pound, Graves, Auden, Gunn, Lowell, Larkin, Kinsella and others with fascinating detours into an East Galway childhood and the folk memories of Antony Raftery. The book is built around a core of previously uncollected work, beginning with the controversial, highly influential ‘Poet’s Journal’ (The Bell, 1951-2) and closing with the wide-ranging ‘Verse Chronicles’ (Dublin Magazine, 1956-8).

Book SynopsisIronic and humorous, witty and self-deprecatory, The Afghan Rumour Bazaar reveals the quotidian absurdities of lives framed against the backdrop of a savage war. Offering daringly new perspectives on a country readers may erroneously assume they know, Nushin Arbabzadah delves into the unacknowledged but real secret sub-cultures and hidden worlds of Afghans, from underground converts to Christianity to mysterious male cross-dressers to tales of bacha-posh girlboys. Among the individuals, fables and dilemmas she confronts are 'Why are Imams Telling Us About Nail Polish?', 'Afghanistan's Rich Jewish Heritage', 'Kabul Street Style', 'The Resurgence of Afghanistan's Spiritual Bazaar', and not forgetting Malalai of Maiwand, who turned her headscarf into a banner and led a successful rebellion against the British. Arbabzadah reveals for the first time Afghans' own vibrant internal deliberations - - on sex and soap operas; conspiracy theories; drugs and diplomacy; terrorism and the Taliban; and how a long-dead soothsayer from Bulgaria accidentally shut down a newspaper. Many different Afghan sensibilities are presented in her book, yet together they offer an unvarnished, at times heartwarming, at times tragic, insight into one of the most complex and fascinating countries on earth.Trade ReviewA wry and witty narrative that's authoritative, affectionate, and at moments wonderfully absurd. With an eye for detail, and a profound sense of place, Nushin Arbabzadah's essays bring us deep inside a remarkable culture defined by its honour and humour. Afghanistan's story is best told by Afghans who live with all its incongruity and still leave us agreeing it's a country like no other. -- Lyse Doucet, Chief International Correspondent, BBCA fresh, funny, provocative voice. Arbabzadah's candid memories and comments are a timely reminder that Afghanistan is a country, not merely a conflict. -- Jason Burke, author of On The Road to Kandahar: Travels Through Conflict in the Islamic World and The 9/11 Wars…invaluable and ground-breaking. For the first time, an Afghan, and a woman at that, takes Westerners into the world(s) of her countrymen and gives them an insider's guide to these people who are all too often cast in simplistic, one-dimensional terms. -- Brian Glyn Williams, Central Asian SurveyPart memoir, part journalism and part storytelling, the book is a heady ride into the craziness that is Afghan life ... [Arbabzadah's] deep affection for Afghanistan is as obvious as is her amusement about the absurdity of life there ... For a look into an often misunderstood country from a woman who is both an outsider and an insider, Afghan Rumour Bazaar is a must read. -- Jyotsna Nambiar, PostNoonNushin Arbabzadah's Afghanistan is a wonderful and terrible place, a land of heart-stopping beauty and unspeakable horrors ... The book is chaotic, and wonderfully so. Its great strength as a national portrait is that the jumble of anecdote and analysis, with serious scholarship and pithy observation and trivial detail all thrown in together, feels three-dimensional and complete. -- Cordelia Jenkins, MintAfghan Rumour Bazaar ... takes the reader deep into the Afghan culture ... The book offers an almost-irreverent, splendidly revealing take on Afghanistan. -- The Telegraph (Calcutta)Afghan Rumour Bazaar by Cambridge scholar Nushin Arbabzadah is a brilliant narrative of the often-overlooked emerging threads and subcultures in Afghanistan. -- Outlook Magazine

Book SynopsisQueer Men's Narrative demonstrates that at the heart of it, queer men and straight men are very much alike in how they respond to society's pressure and definition of what a man should be. The selected narratives show some queer men, like their straight counterparts, hold on to sexism, toxic masculinity and patriarchy as a way to justify their masculinity within a society that prescribes such a role and expectations. Queer Men's Narrative challenges society at large to re-think its idea of what being a man entails and what this means for society itself and how such concepts limits men and women's freedom to be, to live and to understand each other.

This is an insider's account of how an ordinary life became extraordinary' Helen Davies, The TimesThis journal of the invasion, a collection of Andrey Kurkov's writings and broadcasts from Kyiv, is a remarkable record of a brilliant writer at the forefront of a 21st-century war. Andrey Kurkov has been a consistent satirical commentator on his adopted country of Ukraine. His most recent work, Grey Bees, is a dark foreshadowing of the devastation in the eastern part of Ukraine in which only two villagers remain in a village bombed to smithereens. The author has lived in Kyiv and in the remote countryside of Ukraine throughout the Russian invasion. He has also been able to fly to European capitals where he has been working to raise money for charities and to address crowded halls. Kurkov has been asked to write for every English newspaper, as also to be interviewed all over Europe. He has become an important voice for his people.Kurkov sees every video and every posted message, and he spends the sleepless nights of continuous bombardment of his city delivering the truth about this invasion to the world.Trade Review'Ukraine's greatest living novelist' -- Charlie Connelly, New European Books of the Year'No one with the slightest interest in this war, or the nation on which it is being waged, should fail to read Andrey Kurkov' -- Dominic Lawson, Daily Mail'A vivid, moving and sometimes funny account of the reality of life during Russia's invasion' -- Marc Bennetts, The Times'The author's on-the-ground account is packed with surprising details about the human effects of the Russian assault ... His voice is genial but also impassioned, never more so than when deploring Putin's efforts to erase Ukrainian culture and history. And he remains quietly hopeful that it will be won' -- Blake Morrison, Guardian'It is little wonder [...] Kurkov, known for his keen eye for the absurdities of life, would pack his diary of the war with fascinating and eccentric details ... yet what makes Kurkov's diary memorable is its departures into the more quotidian gossip-filled trips to the sauna, Ukraine's morale-boosting victory in the Eurovision Song Contest, ruminations on the status of Ukrainian literature amid paper shortages, and ploys to protect animals in the country's shuttered zoos' -- Megan Gibson, New Statesman'Uplifting and utterly defiant' -- Matt Nixson, Daily Express'Immediate and important ... Book SynopsisAn Argentinian epic about dance “This is the story of a man who took part in a dance contest.” It is thus that Argentine journalist and author Leila Guerriero opens her book. It tells the most difficult of all epic stories: that of the common man. This is an electrifying work that spans the genres of journalism and fiction. It tells a moving and strangely intimate story about malambo, a traditional dance of the Argentine gauchos, and about the Malambo Festival of Laborde in the southeast of the Argentinian province of Córdoba. It is also about Rodolfo González Alcántara, who won the dance competition in 2012. Leila Guerriero is a gifted chronicler. Her internationally acclaimed work A Simple Story was published in Spanish in 2013 and in English in 2017, and now appears in German for the first time, in a translation by Angelica Ammar. First German translation of the impressive chronicle “A foray through life, suffering, sacrifice, silent despair, the dread of loss, solidarity, and glory.” (El País) “[a] level of excellence: […] rigorous work, exhaustive research” (Mario Vargas Llosa)

  • Writing the New Nation in a West African Borderland

Oxford University Press Writing the New Nation in a West African Borderland

Book SynopsisThis book rethinks the history of decolonisation and new nationhood in the Ghana-Togo borderlands, and speaks to an increasingly urgent debate on the production of knowledge about Africa. It does this through the close reading, translation and analysis of a unique primary source - a newspaper entitled Abl??e(meaning ''the Key to Freedom'').Abl??e was initiated and sustained by a shoemaker named Holiday V. K. Komedja, and written almost entirely in his mother-tongue, E?e. Whilst many studies of nationalism have highlighted the importance of anti-colonial newspapers, this volume is unique - in its intensive focus on a single African-language newspaper, in providing translations of entire issues, and in following the story of decolonisation into the era of new nationhood. The manner in which Komedja recounted and explained political events challenges existing scholarly accounts of the rise and fall of Togo''s first independent government, and of ethnic nationalisms and local loyalties witTable of ContentsAcknowledgements Glossary The Eve Alphabet Map PART 1: EDITORS' INTRODUCTION I: Preamble II: An overview: Holiday Vincent Kwasi Komedja and his newspaper III: The Aguawo: Asante invasion and the mission encounter IV: A historiographical intervention: Aguawo and approaches to empire VI: Coercion and coercion: the colonisation of Agu VI: Petitioning against plantations: the particularities of protest in Agu VII: The Togolese press: political history and regional print culture VIII: Journalist-activists: newsprint and politics in the borderlands IX: Writing the new nation: Ablɔɖe Safui and the work of citizenship X: Ablɔɖe Safui is my name!
