  • God is Good for You: A defence of Christianity in

Allen & Unwin God is Good for You: A defence of Christianity in

Book SynopsisThe Judeo-Christian tradition has created and underpinned the moral and legal fabric of Western civilisation for more than 2000 years, yet now we've reached a point in both Australia and many parts of the West where Christianity has become a minority faith rather than the mainstream belief. It's a situation that's fraught both for Christians and our wider society, where the moral certainties that were the foundation of our institutions and laws are no longer held by the majority. At this point of crisis for faith, God is Good for You shows us why Christianity is so vital for our personal and social well-being, and how modern Christians have never worked so hard to make the world a better place at a time when their faith has never been less valued. It carries a vital torch for Christianity in a way that's closely argued, warmly human, good humoured yet passionate, and, above all, convincing.Trade Review"...it is highly accessible, engagingly told, intelligent, with a fine journalist's ability to set the scene by way of anecdotes and illustrations. It is full of astute observations." Barney Zwartz, Panorama, The Canberra Times"As you would expect from a journalist of Sheridan's pedigree, his prose is polished and engaging. The tone throughout is enthusiastic but gracious; there are flashes of wit; the breadth of his erudition is formidable." Roy Williams, The Weekend Australian"Greg Sheridan has been the foreign editor of the Australian newspaper since 1992 and his well-researched critique as to why God is good for us here in Australia will challenge the most sceptical heart." Pastor Jim Seymour, The Tenterfield Star"Greg Sheridan's God is Good For You: A Defence of Christianity in Troubled Times is a vigorous and passionate defence of Christianity. It argues, exhorts, admonishes and informs." Geoff Thompson, ABC Religion & Ethics "At this point of crisis for faith, God is Good For You, shows us why Christianity is so vital for our personal and social wellbeing and how modern Christians have never worked so hard to make the world a better place at a time when their faith has never been less valued. It carries a vital torch for Christianity in a way that's closely argued, warmly human, good humoured yet passionate, and above all, convincing." ACC Emag"God is Good For You...caries a vital torch for Christianity at a time when it feels like Christianity is considered in a very negative way by secular society." Anne Rinaudo, Hope 103.2"You may want to hold onto this book for a while after you read it. Use it as a reference. It is so well researched it could find a home on your shelf quite comfortably." Therese Mount, News Weekly"God is Good for You is inspiring, insightful and informative. In an age where skepticism is elevated in mainstream belief, Sheridan makes the case for faith with fresh urgency. Deftly written, this book adds volume to a much needed voice in our current social climate. I highly encourage all to delve into it with an open mind and a ready heart." Pastor Samuel Rodriguez, Founder and Pastor of the New Season Christian Worship Center"I have just finished reading God is Good for You which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I love the journalistic style which draws the reader in, astonishing breadth in bibliography and appreciation of the beauty of the diversity of the church. I enjoyed every chapter but my most underlined one was the conclusion. I do hope the book will be widely read, not only in Australia but also worldwide." Pastor Nicky Gumbel, Vicar of Holy Trinity Brompton, London, and the developer of the world famous Alpha Course

  • Style Or Substance?: The Nature of True Christian

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Style Or Substance?: The Nature of True Christian

Book SynopsisIn every age, Christians experience pressure to embrace contemporary culture. In Corinth, the church had been infiltrated by some who had grown weary of the message of the cross: whose boast was in outward appearance. In 2 Corinthians 2-7,Paul writes into this setting, urging the Corinthians then, and us today, to embrace the 'weak' ministry of Gospel proclamation, to partner with 'weak' Christians, and to boast in 'weak' ministers. It is in this weakness that God's power is exhibited. Nothing could be more opposite to our celebrity culture.Trade ReviewThis is a readable book. It contrasts the boastful but shallow facade of Paul's rivals at Corinth with the deeper substance of apostolic gospel ministry. It is a timely reminder that the problems at Corinth are still alive and causing as much havoc now, as then. In the words of the authors, 'Paul is adamant that we should stick with the real thing, for only the unchanged message ... will have the power to change the heart and work lasting change. Everything else is surface froth' (p.63). -- James Clark, Evangelical TimesThis book is based on sermons by William Taylor on 2 Corinthians, and, as a weak pastor, a weak gospel proclaimer, leading a church that is weak by the world's standards, I found it a tremendous encouragement to 'be confident in the "weak" ministry of gospel proclamation'. I would recommend it to anyone in ministry. The book confronts those who seek shortcuts, or those who look to methods rather than the gospel for transformation - but it also gets under the skin of those who already agree with its major premise that substance is more important than style. -- Pete Killingley, Evangelicals NowI warmly commend this volume to those whose privileged task it is ... to proclaim 'Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake'. (2 Cor. 4:5) -- Kanishka Raffel (Dean of Sydney)It will challenge and encourage gospel ministers to press on with the task of preaching Christ, embrace weakness and guard against the temptation to compromise ... It will help church members to appreciate authentic ministry and resist the seductive attractions of false teachers ... -- John Stevens (National Director, Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches, Market Harborough, Leicestershire)In an age in which substance often gives way to style, we urgently need teaching like this, which builds convictions about the nature and power of authentic gospel ministry and spurs us to stick with it. -- Vaughan Roberts (Rector of St Ebbe's, Oxford and Director of Proclamation Trust)... a timely book! William Taylor is a skillful expositor of God's Word and brings into the light the profile of a true Christian minister with piercing accuracy and practical application. After reading this book, you will be convinced that God's design is to use weak, broken jars of clay by his Spirit to transform the lives of others and accomplish his divine purposes. -- Brian Croft (Pastor, Auburndale Baptist Church, Louisville, Kentucky and Founder, Practical Shepherding)These expositions ... are full of sane, sound, biblical instruction. I commend them highly, both as examples of faithful word ministry and as a necessary reminder that all lasting ministry will prioritize substance over style. -- Kevin DeYoung (Senior Pastor, Christ Covenant Church, Matthews, North Carolina)Most of my stress in ministry is because I have begun to imagine that it depends on my performance. This book has driven me back to the fundamentals and reminded me where the true power lies. It is ... desperately relevant in our culture. -- Jonty Allcock (Lead Pastor, The Globe Church, London)

Here is a worthy resource to help readers mine the depths of God's Word in readable and practical fashion. -- Brandon D. Crowe (Associate Professor of New Testament, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania )A rich and insightful commentary on Paul's most theologically comprehensive letter ... Easily rises to the top of recommendable books on Ephesians. -- Derek W. H. Thomas (Senior Minister of Preaching and Teaching, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina)Solidly orthodox and Reformed. Phillips gives theological arguments and devotional suggestions for the pastor presenting the great truths of Ephesians to a congregation. This commentary is a must if preaching or teaching through Ephesians. What a joy to read! -- Robert J. Cara (Provost and Chief Academic Officer & Hugh and Sallie Reaves Professor of New Testament, Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte, North Carolina)Dr Phillips expounds the text in keeping with the apostle's own concerns. It's done in a way that spells out the sheer wonder of the salvation proclaimed in the gospel. In particular, Dr Phillips draws out the idea that what believers experience in time has its roots in what God has decreed from eternity and what Christ has secured in history. Its ultimate horizon is in eternity to come. He homes in on the key doctrines that underpin the apostle's message. They explore the flow of God's unfolding purpose in salvific history. The author is eclectic in the historical and biographical sources he cites and repeatedly brings his readers back to the relevance of Paul's message for Christians today. -- Mark G. Johnston, Evangelical Times... may we be grateful that Richard D. Phillips, a seasoned and skilled preacher of the Word of God, has gifted the church with this expository commentary on this precious letter. Phillips' Ephesians will help you to see in new ways the riches and the depths of the gospel of Jesus Christ. -- Guy Prentiss Waters (James M. Book Synopsis“I love my robot lawn mowers, my laptop, wifi, Google, Facetime, Whatsapp and the possibility of drone postal deliveries and more.. Yet worries nag about being overwhelmed by an artificial intelligence revolution whose ethical and moral parameters are less clear than its rampant profiteering from and monetising of your lives and mine. This hugely informative book shakes us out of our massage armchairs and demands that we engage immediately with these galloping advances so we can shape them to the benefit of the many and not leave them to the enrichment of the few at the awful cost of the impoverishment of swathes of humanity”. Mary McAleese, former President of Ireland. "Robots, Ethics and The Future of Jobs is a wakeup call for political, civic, media and church leaders, urging a response to the deepening and accelerating pace of technological change and its potential consequences. Artificial Intelligence, robotics, drones, the internet of things and 3D printing are the building blocks of the 4th industrial revolution. These technologies offer great potential but also carry real risks and are reaching into every corner of our lives, civilian and military. Who will win and who will lose? Who will set the rules and the ethical boundaries within which they should develop and operate? Will the displaced be included, if so, how; or ignored and, if so, with what political, social and economic consequences? That these questions cannot be avoided and should not be postponed - and that we do not need to wait for change to happen because it is already upon us - are central messages of this thought provoking text." • Word to the World

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Word to the World

Book SynopsisThe modern church is suffering from crises in identity, belief and involvement with the State. As you read this collection of the works of William Barker you will find that they are all connected. The reason why the church has problems interacting with government is because it doesn’t understand its mission, history and authority. An internationally respected professor of Church history shows what the church should do and look for in creating proper relationships with governments, other faiths and society in general. He also shows how we should deal with divisions inside the church and what role the Bible should play in defining its faith. Sit back in a comfy chair and let Will Barker shed light on some of the knottiest problems in the church. Then go out and put it into practice.Trade Review"Dr. Barker is a first-rate church historian, and his considerable theological skills are on open display in this welcome collection of his writings. His generous spirit, powerful mind and pastoral heart are productive of theological discourse that is a model, in both tone and content, for reformed ministers and scholars as we engage with a hostile postmodern culture." -- J Ligon Duncan III PhD, Senior Minister of First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, Mississippi (Chancellor and CEO, Reformed Theological Seminary)'The publication of Word to the World is a cause for rejoicing. The book is marked by both variety and constancy. Running through all this variety, though, are certain constants: good writing; a combination of forthrightness and fairness; prudence and much wise counsel; a reverent, even worshipful, tone; and above all, the fruitfulness of a mind and heart devoted to the Bible. Indeed, Will Barker's attitude toward and use of the Bible in this collection makes one think of the good old biblical name that we used to use for the Word of God-the Holy Scriptures (2 Tim 3:15).' -- Robert A. Peterson, Professor of Systematic Theology, Covenant Theological Seminary (Theologian, editor, and co–author, ‘Jesus In Prophecy: How Christ’s Life Fulfills Biblical Predictions’)

Our understanding of the Muslim faith is very limited, and their critique of the Christian faith is often unlike any we have come across. Despite the difficulties we are still called to be ready to witness. Islam is the world's fastest growing religion so Christian's are going to have to learn how to reach Muslims, and how to answer their criticisms. Malcolm draws on his experience of witnessing to Muslims, and shows how to witness effectively. Trade Review'It is amazing how much information and experience is packed into this gracious little book. We highly recommend it.' -- British Church Newspaper (5 March 2004)'This small booklet is something you should not be without if you want to be effective in your evangelism among Muslim people. A very useful tool, giving you knowledge, help and encouragement.' -- Dr. Elsie A. Maxwell

Book SynopsisThis collection is set within the horizon of Jesuit mission in East Asia which is best examplified by the great Mateo Ricci whose work centuries ago anticipated in so many ways the dialogue between religion, science and culture today. This horizon, though implicit in the following essays, serves as the basic perspective of the authors many of whom are in some way connected to the Jesuit tradition either as members of the Society of Jesus or as graduates and lecturers of Jesuit educational institutions in East Asia. Despite the presence of of scientfic acivity in some academic or research institutions and the dominant influence of Christian religious practice, the science-and-religion problematic has been, for the most part, untreated in the Philippine contect. Jose Mario Francisco SJ, is head of the Jesuit School of Theology in Manila, Philippines.

Book SynopsisIs fellowship still possible? In this volume Jochen Kaiser analyses how we experience music during church services. In his view singing and making music may best be seen as both the individual and collective expression of the faith of those assembled.Music during church services can be a convincing expression of the faith of the individual, both of heart and soul. All persons present become part of a temporary, spiritual collective. The resultant meaning of church music for the religious experience of the individual forms the empirical part of this work by Jochen Kaiser. He sent out an appeal to collect essays and musical examples taken from actual experiences, 64 of which he analysed using the so-called documentary method. The results show that singing and making music during church services can be interpreted as both an individual and collective expression of the faith of those present.

  • Peeters Publishers Catholic Social Thought: Twilight or Renaissance?

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThese essays are an attempt to recover something of the form, style and force of Catholic non-official social thinking in the face of contemporary social thought and contemporary injustice in advanced societies. After an opening essay by the doyen of Catholic writers in this field, Jean-Yves Calvez, SJ, the book is divided into three sections. The first and largest group of essays discuss patterns and predicaments of Catholic social thought in general terms and from different points of view. The context here is partly the debate on modernity, high-modernity and post-modernity, partly the issue of how far and in what ways Catholic Social Thought can claim to be distinctive, relative to contemporary secular thought. The second section of the book focusses on relationships between Catholic social thought and its restatement, and a number of contemporary debates on public issues. Particular attention is given, in successive essays, to issues of anti-poverty, human rights, economic theory and international finance. A third and shorter section describes a number of institutional projects which attempt to carry Catholic social values forward into concrete action, focussing on work in health and welfare, grass roots economic co-operation, anti-poverty and international peace and justice. Final contributions by the reputed international scholar in this field, John Coleman, SJ, and the book editors, respectively evaluate the collection as a whole and discuss further steps.

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat is it about leadership that makes being a moral leader such a challenge? Why do leaders typically make the same mistakes over and over again, throughout history, across cultures and over time? How do expectations of heroic leadership impact a leader's moral integrity? How do followers contribute to (or undermine) a robust ethical stance of their leaders? This volume addresses these and other questions from a variety of interdisciplinary, practitioner and faith perspectives. It contains, for example, a historical account of leadership challenges, an engagement with the responsibility ethics of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and a contextual study of the specific challenges of ethical leadership in Russia. This second volume of the series Christian Perspectives on Leadership and Social Ethics, published by the Institute of Leadership and Ethics, of the Evangelische Theologische Faculteit in Leuven (Belgium), serves leaders to face an increasingly complex reality.

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisThe 16th conference of the ESWTR, held in Crete, took place in the midst of the European financial and banking crisis in Greece and the beginning of the challenge of refugees. In this yearbook, female scholars reflect on the current political situation in Europe in the light of Hope. The fact that the conference took place in Greece gave a unique chance to women from Southern and Eastern countries in Europe to participate. The articles in this yearbook not only highlight the aspects of the hostile relations that human beings developed towards each other, they analyze very sharply the reactionary and misogynic politics in Europe nowadays. The role of women in the dissemination of the hopeful biblical message, their social involvement as well as their engagement in the transformation of this world, is a main focus in the relevant theological discussion.
