Book SynopsisOur entire understanding of funding and sustainability must change.Tithes and offerings alone are no longer enough to provide for the needs of the local church, enable pastors to pursue opportunities, or sustain long-term ministry impact. Growing financial burdens on the middle class, marginal increases in contributions to religious organizations, shifting generational attitudes toward giving, and changing demographics are having a negative impact on church budgets. Given that someday local churches may be required to pay taxes on the property they own and/or lose the benefit of soliciting tax-deductible gifts, the time to pivot is now. What''s needed is disruptive innovation in church economics. For churches to not only survive but thrive in the future, leaders must learn to leverage assets, bless the community, empower entrepreneurs, and create multiple streams of income to effectively fund mission. BRF (The Bible Reading Fellowship) Making Disciples in Messy Church
Book SynopsisThis is a book that helps church leaders think through how to go about creating long-term communities for those who go along to Messy Church. It gives church leaders the theology and practical steps for a longer-term strategy to ensure that Messy Church and those who come along are given the right nurturing environment to grow and flourish.Trade ReviewMessy Church is a gift from God, one of the Holy Spirit's wonderful surprises, where a step of faith by one very ordinary church has opened the way for more than a thousand others to engage with families who had no serious connection to a church. No one anticipated that the story publicised in the first Fresh Expressions DVD in 2006 would take on such a life of its own. Messy Church is now a movement in its own right, within the wider Fresh Expressions movement. This book, from Paul Moore, the vicar of that church, presents insights from the oldest member of this young family of churches. They are insights from which all who are committed to disciple-making can benefit. Those who have been unsure of Messy Church, who would like it to be less messy, and who wonder if it really is church, have frequently raised the question of discipleship. How can you possibly make disciples among all that mess, especially if you meet just once per month? On the contrary, I have always believed that Messy Church is as valid a fresh expression of church as any of the many other models and examples. Because of this, I have always been convinced that the secrets of making disciples through Messy Church lay within the gift itself, in the DNA of the original idea given by the Holy Spirit, and that they would emerge over time. The temptation to bolt on ideas from a different model in order to answer questions or solve apparent problems about disciple-making has always been misguided. It is also evidence of impatience. As the gift of Messy Church has been unwrapped during its early years, the secrets have begun to be revealed. The Messy Church world is not closed to learning from other sources. Paul draws helpfully from Scripture, from ancient tradition, from other mission practitioners and researchers, from educational theory and from the worldwide Messy family. But, above all, he draws from the underlying values of Messy Church. He tells us not so much how to make disciples through Messy Church as how to create Messy Church as a disciple-making culture, which is much more important. He sets realistic expectations about the time it takes to journey from no church connection to active faith. He robustly defends intergenerational learning. He wants parents equipped to take responsibility for their children's spiritual development, and team members to see Messy Church as their church, not just the place where they volunteer once a month. I suspect that there may be even more to be unpacked from this surprising gift over the coming years, but for now this will do very well. Bishop Graham Cray Archbishops' Missioner and Leader of the Fresh Expressions TeamWritten with clarity and conviction, Making Disciples in Messy Church is a timely and helpful book for a movement that is deeply serious about discipleship. Drawing on biblical, monastic and catechetical approaches, the book contains much wisdom and inspiration for those seeking to make disciples in all forms of church, not just the phenomenon that is Messy Church. The affirmation of the places of family and community in discipleship formation is especially welcome. I warmly and wholeheartedly commend this book. Andrew Roberts, Methodist Minister and Director of Training for Fresh ExpressionsDiscipleship is probably the biggest single issue the Church needs to grapple with in our present times. This book has some vital things to say on this central issue, not only to those interested in Messy Church but to all churches. My advice would be: read it, think about what you read and then apply it in your own situation. David Male, Director of the Centre for Pioneer Learning, CambridgeMessy Church is growing from a single fresh expression of church into a whole movement of mission. Making Disciples in Messy Church brings vital wisdom culled from scripture and from experience to all involved in making disciples. Its lessons are vital for all those engaged in Messy Church and for all those involved in making disciples. Steven Croft, Bishop of SheffieldThe Messy Church movement is fantastic, helping connect people to Christ and his church through community and creativity. Paul has been on the journey with Messy Church since the start, and in this fascinating book shows how Messy Church is not only reaching people with the Gospel, it is raising up disciples across the world. Canon Mark Russell, CEO Church Army A joy to read and a contemporary Epistle from a Paul of our time, Making Disciples in Messy Church is a timely and essential read for all who are serious about building upon the good connections to the local community made through Messy Church and seeking how to making disciples in our contemporary age. Stephen Lindridge, Fresh Expressions Methodist Connexional Missioner Paul Moore writes out of first-hand experience. To this he brings deeper and wider thought. The book brings disparate things together in one place: various frameworks to assess progress in discipleship, lively material from a wide range of Scripture, some ecumenical perspectives and sensible questions to ponder. It ends with solid practical suggestions and knocks on the head the critique that Messy Church has no answers to questions of discipleship. It deserves to be read and applied. George Lings, Director of the Sheffield Centre

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Teaching 1 & 2 Thessalonians: From Text to
Book SynopsisIn a day when church planting is back in fashion, here is Paul speaking to a newly planted fellowship. In a day when Christians in the West are finding themselves under growing pressure from the surrounding culture, here is Paul encouraging a church facing strong opposition. This book enables the leader to apply practical theology to specific situations that still affect the church today. This is the latest addition to the Teaching the Bible series.Trade ReviewThe task of moving from the text of Scripture to clear and faithful exposition is challenging. This series of excellent guides aims to help the Bible teacher to observe what is there in the text, and prepare to convey its significance to contemporary hearers. In this way these volumes often do more than the weightier technical commentaries. It is like having the guidance of an experienced coach in the wonderful work of rightly handling the word of truth. -- John Woodhouse (Retired Principal and Lecturer in Doctrine and Old Testament, Moore College, Sydney, Australia)The Teaching series is a great resource for Bible study leaders and pastors, indeed for any Christian who wants to understand their Bible better. -- Mark Dever (Senior Pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church and President, 9Marks.org, Washington, DC)The need of the hour is Bible knowledge. When knowledge fails, faith fails, and we are shaped instead by cultural forces alien to God. Christian Focus Publications Ltd Burning Hearts: Preaching to the Affections

Previous generations thought a great deal about the centrality of the heart in the Christian life and the need to preach to it. This book will prove a valuable resource as we learn about the place of the affections in our walk with Christ and in preaching Him to ourselves and others.Trade ReviewFor some, this little book will be a healthy reminder; for others, it will revolutionize their preaching. -- D. A. The Lord has provided encouragement, correction, and hope in his Word. Held in Honor aims to strengthen you by pointing you to the promises of God's Word and by showing you how past generations have applied this life-giving message to their own marriages.Trade Review... This is historical theology at its best. Biblical, practical, wonderfully helpful and really enjoyable. -- Alistair Begg (Senior Pastor, Parkside Church, Chagrin Falls, Ohio)Plummer and Haste's Held in Honor: Wisdom for Your Marriage from Voices of the Past is a collection of writings on marriage from Christian theologians, pastors, and authors. The work is a delight to read on many levels. Those who value church history will appreciate the profound reflections on marriage from some of the greatest Christian minds of the past. Those who seek to understand Scripture's teaching on marriage will be rewarded and those who wish to be challenged to live with greater devotion toward God and his or her spouse will find many practical insights. The authors present a realistic understanding of marriage, highlighting its joys and sorrows, as well as its triumphs and trials. I highly recommend this book. -- Michael L. Bryant (Dean, School of Christian Studies, Charleston Southern University, Charleston, South Carolina)If you're looking for something to read on marriage, whether alone as a husband or a wife, as a single person preparing for marriage, or as a couple reading together, I think that this devotion would be a great choice for you. Rather than seeking out modern wisdom on marriage, you're turning back to 2,000 years of church history and gaining wisdom and insight from two millennia of Christian thinkers. With that historical focus, coupled with the short nature of the devotions (2 pages each), I believe that this will be a great resource to any man or woman, single or married, to gain a better understanding of what a biblical marriage looks like, and what it means for marriage to be "held in honor by all" (Heb. 13:4). -- Zack Ford, Youth Pastor at Grace Bible Church, Mountain City, GeorgiaAs a woman engaged to be married for the first time (in my mid-50s), who loves classic Christian writings and devotional literature, I have found this book to be a treasure trove. A sweet and timely source of wisdom as I seek to honor Christ in a new season and station of life. -- Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth (Author and founder & host of Revive Our Hearts)What a delightful mix of historical wisdom, biblical truth, and real-world application. In these pages you'll hear the early church martyr Ignatius tell you, "Marriage is God's good gift." Keep reading and you'll see how good and glorious of a gift it is. -- Stephen J. Nichols (President, Reformation Bible College, CAO Ligonier Ministries, Sanford, Florida)Held in Honor is an easy to read devotional drawing on the wisdom of the past concerning the many issues related to marriage and how scripture speaks to them. This is an enjoyable read and proves that Christians of the past have as much to teach us about marriage as those in the present. This book will help you gain a greater appreciation for voices of the past in regards to the churches teaching on marriage. -- The Journal for Biblical Manhood and WomanhoodGood books on marriage are hard to find, but in Held in Honor, Robert Plummer and Matt Haste have taken an expedition through church history to bring back the finest gems of biblical teaching on marriage. Accompanied by biographical sketches and the authors' own commentary, this book will challenge, encourage, convict, and inspire every wife to cherish her marriage and prize her husband. -- Carolyn Mahaney (Author of Feminine Appeal, Blogger at www.girltalkhome.com)... a wonderful resource for Christians as they seek to live out their marriages in a way that glorifies God and exalts the Gospel. -- R. Albert Mohler (President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)... Theologically informative and instructive and yet devotional in approach, it makes a fine contribution to contemporary Christian reflection on a most important institution. -- Carl R. Trueman (Professor of Biblical and Religious Studies, Grove City College, Pennsylvania)In my eight years of marriage I have found great joy in reading to Shannon Deane before we go to bed each night. I think I just found my favorite book to read to her! We are half way through reading HELD IN HONOR by Dr. Robert Plummer and Matt Haste and we have already been tremendously blessed because of it. Each chapter is only two pages long which makes it easy reading each night, even when you are tired. You are presented with a short bio from someone in church history along with a quote they have made about marriage. The quotes themselves have been amazing and helpful to see that people have struggled with the same difficulties in marriage for 2,000 years! It actually makes you feel quite sane. The authors then present you with a devotional follow up that brings clarity to the quote by directing your eyes to the Scriptures. There are challenging questions posed that if asked to your spouse will lead to deep conversations that bring edification and change in your marriage. This book is fun to read! -- Andy Deane, Dean, Calvary Chapel Bible College, CaliforniaThis inspiring collection of excerpts on marriage with accompanying devotionals will make stimulating reading for engaged and married couples and even singles... Highly recommended! -- Andreas Köstenberger (Founder of Biblical Foundations and co–author of ‘Equipping for Life’ and ‘God’s Design for Man & Woman’)I do not know of a more interesting and scholarly book to recommend for a marriage-focused devotional... Inter-Varsity Press Bonhoeffer, Christ and Culture
Book SynopsisDietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) was one of the most compelling theologians of the twentieth century. A complex mix of scholarship and passion, his life and writings continue to fascinate and challenge Christians worldwide. He was a pastor and profound teacher and writer on Christian theology and ethics, yet was also involved in the resistance against Hitler which plotted his assassination. Bonhoeffer graduated from the University of Berlin and earned his doctorate in theology at the age of twenty-one. While pursuing postgraduate work at New York's Union Theological Seminary his life and ministry was profoundly influenced by his unanticipated involvement with the African American Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem during that time. Protesting the unconstitutional interference by Hitler of the established national Protestant church and the persecution of the Jews, and rejecting the alignment of the German Christian movement with the Nazi regime, Bonhoeffer became head of an underground seminary for the resisting Confessing Church in Germany. At the 2012 Wheaton Theology Conference, Bonhoeffer's thought and ministry were explored in stimulating presentations. Bonhoeffer's views of Jesus Christ, the Christian community, and the church's engagement with culture enjoyed special focus. Throughout it is clear that in the twenty-first century, Bonhoeffer's legacy is as provocative and powerful as ever.

Muddy Pearl Lead
Book SynopsisThe moment Jesus kneels with a towel and bowl to wash his disciples' feet. The point where he looks Peter in the eye and predicts betrayal. That intimate, urgent prayer to the Father for the disciples. That resolute strength before the Sanhedrin, before Pilate, before the crowd. The cross. The talk with Mary in the Garden. The walk with Peter at Galilee. The later chapters of the Gospel of John form what is for many the deepest and most moving accounts of all Scripture. They also form a detailed description of Jesus' final days and hours on earth, Jesus final instructions to his team as he prepares to hand on his ministry. Karl Martin mines this incredibly rich vein of Scripture to draw lessons for leadership, leadership in Jesus' way. Leadership in the way of Jesus is about humility, about investing your life in your team, about facing betrayal, about dying to self, about handing on, about succession. Ultimately, true leadership is not about seeing others serve your dream - it is about seeing others released into the dreams, the gifting and calling that the Lord has placed on their lives. It is about something beyond you. This deceptively profound, honest and practical book gives great insight for leaders - challenge for younger leaders, encouragement for mid-life leaders, and refreshment for the mature leaders - and what may be some of the most significant lessons of their leadership life.

Multnomah Press Humility: True Greatness
Book Synopsis“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” —1 Peter 5:5 A battle rages within every one of us every day. It’s the clash between our sense of stubborn self-sufficiency and God’s call to recognize that we’re really nothing without Him. It’s pride versus humility. And it’s a fight we can’t win without looking repeatedly to Christ and the cross. C. J. Mahaney raises a battle cry to daily, diligently, and deliberately weaken our greatest enemy (pride) and cultivate our greatest friend (humility). His thorough examination clarifies misconceptions, revealing the truth about why God detests pride and turns His active attention to the humble. Because pride is never passive, defeating it demands an intentional attack. The blessing that follows is God’s abundant favor. “This is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit.” —Isaiah 66:2, ESV God clearly states that He is drawn to the humble. He’s also clear that He opposes the proud. These two, humility and pride, cannot coexist. Where one is fostered, the other is defeated. Which will you pursue? When you acknowledge the deception of pride and intentionally humble yourself, you become free to savor abundant mercies and unlikely graces. You will find a new life is yours—a life God richly favors. A God-glorifying life you don’t want to miss.
