Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Sidney Chambers and The Shadow of Death

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis''Inspector Morse would appear to have a rival'' - Scotland on Sunday''A perfect accompaniment to a sunny afternoon, a hammock and a glass of Pimms'' - Guardian''An undiluted pleasure'' - Scotsman_______________Sidney Chambers, the Vicar of Grantchester, is a thirty-two year old bachelor. Sidney is an unconventional clergyman and can go where the police cannot.Together with his roguish friend Inspector Geordie Keating, Sidney inquires into the suspect suicide of a Cambridge solicitor, a scandalous jewellery theft at a New Year''s Eve dinner party, the unexplained death of a well-known jazz promoter and a shocking art forgery, the disclosure of which puts a close friend in danger. Sidney discovers that being a detective, like being a clergyman, means that you are never off duty..._______________''A charmingly effective tale of detection ... a satisfyingly old-fashioned read'' - The Times''No detective since Father Trade ReviewNo detective since Father Brown has been more engaging than Canon Sidney Chambers. Perfect company in bed * Salley Vickers *Inspector Morse would appear to have a rival * Scotland on Sunday *A charmingly effective tale of detection ... evoking oodles of churchy village atmosphere, circa 1953, provides a satisfyingly old-fashioned read * The Times *The clerical milieu is well rendered as an affectionate eye is cast over post-war England - a perfect accompaniment to a sunny afternoon, a hammock and a glass of Pimm's -- Laura Wilson * Guardian *James Runcie has written the coziest of cozy murder mysteries. Taken individually, each of these clerical whodunits poses a clever puzzle for armchair detectives. Viewed as a collective study of British life as it was lived when Elizabeth II first ascended the throne, these stories present a consistently charming and occasionally cutting commentary on 'a postwar landscape full of industry, promise and concrete * New York Times Book Review *An undiluted pleasure * Scotsman *Full of witty phrases to delight the reader ... This entertaining first volume about Canon Chambers will have Runcie's readers longing for the next * Peggy Woodford, Church Times *An evocation of a more genteel era ... Chambers turns out to be a winning clergyman-sleuth, and Runcie's literary authority is repeatedly demonstrated in the construction of his elegant tales. In fact, it is the plotting that really distinguishes this collection, and will make many more readers more than ready to follow the God-fearing hero from the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953 to the wedding of Charles and Diana in 1981 ... there is no denying the winning charm of these artfully fashioned mysteries * Independent *Gentle criminal entertainment with a pleasantly old-fashioned feel to it -- Andrew Taylor * Spectator *The plots are intriguing ... While the diminutive priest detective created by G. K. Chesterton led the way, Sidney Chambers is set fair to be a worthy successor. In a sceptical age this is quite an achievement. Then again, the author is a son of an archbishop. And who better to portray the sleuth in ecclesiastical clothing? -- Barry Turner * Daily Mail *At last, an Anglican Father Brown ... Each tale is beautifully crafted and surprising. I hope for many more volumes -- A.N. Wilson * Spectator *

Taylor & Francis Ltd Hospital Chaplaincy in the Twentyfirst Century

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe place of religion in public life continues to be a much-debated topic in Western nations. This book charts the changing role of hospital chaplains and examines through detailed case studies the realities of practice and the political debates which either threaten or sustain the service. This second edition includes a new introduction and updated material throughout to present fresh insights and research about chaplaincy, including in relation to New Atheism and the developing debate about secularism and religion in public life. Swift concludes that chaplains must do more to communicate the value of what they bring to the bedside.Trade ReviewReviews of the first edition: ’The book I wanted to read when I first became a healthcare chaplain. As a novice chaplain, I wanted acquainting with the historical background of my new profession; a handle on the politics behind the emerging professional agenda of chaplaincy; and direction in understanding what spiritual care means in a non-religious environment.’ Reviews in Religion and Theology (reviewer Steve Nolan, UK) ’Swift’s book is for church historians, practical theologians, chaplains, health care professionals, and those embattled in the debate over society’s role in health care. Americans have been privy to a front row seat as politicians, insurance providers, lobbyists, assorted special-interest groups, and medical professionals debate health care in the USA. This is a must -read book if that debate is of interest to you.’ Journal of Religion, Disability & Health (reviewer Willard W.C. Ashley) ’This invaluable book will stand the test of time. Health care professionals will find it a constant point of reference as they wrestle with the issues both locally and nationally. Most importantly, there is a challenge here to the churches to take chaplaincy seriously as the frontier ministry it is.’ Paul Ballard, Cardiff University, UK ’A fascinating book written by a serving chaplain. ... provides a valuable insight into the opportunities and difficulties in 21st century chaplaincy. It deserves to be required reading for all those entering the profession.’ Theology (reviewer Derek J. Fraser) ’[Swift] has ignited the debate about what is truly of value in healthcare chaplaincy and how that value can be appreciated, understood, and evidenced by both the faith communities and by the NHS.’ Journal of Practical Theology (reviewer Mia Hilborn) ’With the NHS facing more and more calls on its resources from an ageing population, chaplains do need to follow Swift’s advice. This book should help them gain new confidence in the value of thTable of ContentsContents: Foreword to the first edition; Foreword to the second edition; Preface; Introduction; A history of the chaplain; The chaplains’ professionalization; The political context; The battle of Worcester; The chaplain today: an auto-ethnography; Religion, secularization and spirituality; Theological voices and ventures; Conclusion; Bibliography; Index.

    Lexington Books Sensing Sacred

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisSensing Sacred is an edited volume that explores the critical intersection of religion and body through the religious lens of practical theology, with an emphasis on sensation as the embodied means in which human beings know themselves, others, and the divine in the world. The manuscript argues that all human interaction and practice, including religious praxis, engages body through at least one of the human senses (touch, smell, hearing, taste, sight, kinestics/proprioception). Unfortunately, bodyand, more specifically and ironically, sensationis eclipsed in contemporary academic scholarship that is inherently bent toward the realm of theory and ideas. This is unfortunate because it neglects bodies, physical or communal, as the repository and generator of culturally conditioned ideas and theory. It is ironic because all knowledge transmission minimally requires several senses including sight, touch, and hearing. Sensing Sacred is organized into two parts. The first section devotes a cTrade ReviewWithout neglecting bodily ethics and the right use of power relations, the authors in this volume offer a way to revalue the whole body in pastoral theology, utilizing both western and non-western traditions as foundations for reclaiming the five senses in pastoral practice—a balancing act well accomplished. -- Pamela Cooper-White, Christiane Brooks Johnson Professor of Psychology and Religion, Union Theological Seminary in New YorkIn a field that often makes the mistake of dealing in polarities (e.g. individual v. society, subject v. object, psyche v. body), this volume unites them, arguing that the body mediates personal, cultural, social, and religious experiences, and thus must be taken seriously as a site of knowing and healing. If practical theologians are to understand human being more fully, we must contend with physicality. This collection of essays invites readers into this complex work of taking embodied selves seriously, and encourages us to value them as loci of wisdom and theological insight. -- Barbara McClure, Brite Divinity SchoolTable of ContentsIntroduction: Embodied Knowing, Embodied Theology: What Happened to the Body? Lexington Books Feminist Praxis against U.S. Militarism

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisFeminist Praxis against U.S. Militarism provides critical feminist and womanist analyses of U.S. militarism that challenge the ongoing U.S. neoliberal military-industrial complex and its multivalent violence that destroys people's lives, especially women and other vulnerable populations. It highlights the intentional critique of U.S. militarism from feminist/womanist perspectives that seek to show the ways in which gender, race/ethnicity, sexuality, and violence intersect to threaten women's lives, especially women of color's lives, and the broader environment upon which women's lives are dependent. Most of all, this volume challenges the readers to understand the U.S. as the warfare, counterterror, carceral state and its devastating effects on the everyday lives of women, especially women of color, locally, nationally, and globally. This volume also helps readers understand the racialized gendered impacts of U.S. militarism in conjunction with the ongoing global economies of dispossesTrade ReviewThis book provides much for reflection on the complexification of notions of violence. It makes cogent points about the role of growing militarization and how narratives of safety, security, and violence against women are used to support the proliferation of the military industrial complex into many realms of religion and society. -- Neomi De Anda, University of DaytonTable of ContentsINTRODUCTION Nami Kim and Wonhee Anne Joh CHAPTER ONE “The Militarism of Racialization, Colonization, and Heteropatriarchy” by Andrea Smith CHAPTER TWO “Manifesting Evil: The Doctrine of Discovery as Christianized Genocide in the Lives of Indigenous Women and Their Communities” by Lisa Dellinger CHAPTER THREE “From My Lai to Ferguson: Collaterality, Grievous Deaths, Militarized Orientalism, Benevolence, and Racism” by Mai-Anh Tran CHAPTER FOUR “The Shame Culture of Empire: The Chrysanthemum and the Sword as Handbook for Cold War Imperialism” by B.
