European society is religiously plural, which is why interfaith learning is becoming increasingly important. It is seldom taken into account that the students participating in such lessons have ideas and attitudes, possibly even entrenched prejudices about other religions. However, this learning condition has implications for learning about and from each other, so it cannot be ignored. This study therefore explores how students think about members of other religions and whether socially widespread reservations are already evident at a young age. Based on this, options for action will be developed as to how this can be addressed in (inter)religious educational processes in order to contribute to a reduction of prejudices.

Established in 1994 by Fr. Timothy Scully, C.S.C., and Fr. Sean McGraw, C.S.C., ACE places more than 150 college graduates in over one hundred parochial schools throughout the United States. The overarching purpose of ACE is to improve Catholic schools, especially in underprivileged areas of the U.S., by enabling exceptionally talented students to teach in them. Book SynopsisFor almost twenty years, Foundational Issues in Christian Education has been a key text for many Christian education courses. Its perceptive analysis coupled with clear writing make it a resource without peer. In the book, Christian education expert Robert Pazmiño guides readers through a comprehensive discussion of the interdisciplinary foundations of Christian education, calling all Christian educators to reevaluate the fundamentals of their discipline. 'A careful exploration of foundations,' writes Pazmiño, 'is essential before specifying principles and guidelines for practice.'This updated edition includes interaction with professional developments over the past ten years and appendixes that assess the impact of postmodernism as an educational philosophy. In addition, each chapter includes 'points to ponder' for personal reflection or classroom use.Trade Review"In a clear and concise way the author introduces each of the foundational areas by exploring its purpose, current trends, and inherent difficulties. His chapters on the psychological and curricular foundations are two of the most concise, clear, and balanced introductions availableA... His surveys are accurate and his critiques are pointed, insightful, and fair, consistently calling the educator to examine each of the theories in light of one's biblical and theological frameworkA... An outstanding strength of this work is the way it consistently examines foundational considerations in light of the stated purpose of education."Darwin K. Book SynopsisReveals how young American Jewish children come to develop their views about IsraelIsrael has long occupied a prominent place in the lives and imaginations of American Jews, serving as both a symbolic touchstone and a source of intercommunal conflict. In My Second-Favorite Country, Sivan Zakai offers the first longitudinal study of how American Jewish children come to think and feel about Israel, tracking their evolving conceptions from kindergarten to fifth grade. This work sheds light on the perception of Israel in the minds of Jewish children in the US and provides a rich case study of how children more generally develop ideas and beliefs about self, community, nation, and world. In contrast to popular views of America's youth as naive or uninterested, this book illuminates both the complexity of their thinking and their desire to be included in conversations about important civic and political matters. Zakai draws from compelling empirical data to prove that children spend considerTrade Review"Featuring impressive data and compelling prose, My Second-Favorite Country is the first longitudinal study of American Jewish children that is outside of the framework of heritage tourism. . . . Will certainly make a lasting impression in the field of Jewish Studies." -- Ari Y. Kelman, Stanford University"Exceptionally well-crafted and fascinating. By illustrating Jewish-American children’s grappling with identity and community, Zakai has provided a necessary and long overdue contribution to Jewish Studies." -- Theodore Sasson, Middlebury College"Rich in anecdotes, featuring children sharing their thoughts in their own words, My Second-Favorite Country serves as important testimony that conveys the need to listen to children on the topic of Israel. By arguing for making Israel part of what Jewish children know versus just a place they have positive feelings about, Zakai charts a course forward for helping them become authentically attached to Israel." * Contemporary Jewry *"In My Second-Favorite Country: How American Jewish Children Think About Israel, Sivan Zakai offers a novel suggestion for how to approach Israel education: let’s listen carefully to students’ sense-making. Zakais’ book is a must-read for educators who see it as their responsibility to help students make sense of the world in which they live, in which we all live, and in which we all may have a lasting impact." * Reading Religion *

St Augustine's Press Doctrinal Sermons on the Catechism of the
Book SynopsisThere have been serious complaints since Vatican II that many Catholics do not know the basic teaching of the Church on the essentials of the faith, such as the Ten Command-ments, the Seven Sacraments, the Sacrifice of the Mass and the twelve articles of the Creed. That was one of the main reasons for the production of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which was mandated by Blessed John Paul II and published in the 1990s. After Vatican II there was much emphasis on preaching that explains the daily readings from the Bible. That is what we now call a “homily.” Traditionally a sermon has been preaching on some point of doctrine or morals, illustrated and supported by quotes from the Bible. An unintended and unanticipated result of the homily has been the neglect of sermons and a lack of preaching on the fundamentals of the Catholic faith. When the Catechism appeared, some bishops, like Cardinal John J. O’Connor of New York, gave sermons based on it for over a year. The 54 doctrinal sermons in this book are presented in the hope that priests will make use of them to prepare real sermons that explain the basic truths of the Catholic faith. The sermons follow the basic outline of the Catechism: Creed, Sacraments, Commandments, and the Our Father. The purpose of these sermons is to promote a better understanding in the minds of the faithful of the beauty and depth of truth contained in our holy Catholic faith. The grasp of that truth should result in an increase of faith, hope and charity. St Augustine's Press Where Did I Come From? Where Am I Going? How Do –
Book SynopsisWhere Did I Come From? Where Am I Going? How Do I Get There? is a complete course on Catholicism, featuring concise, reader-friendly, relevant prose. Straight answers are tailored for today’s generation. Topics addressed include: Can I know anything? Can I know what God is like? How am I really in the image and likeness of God? What about my conscience? Am I a gift to others? What about my freedom? Is any sexual activity OK before marriage? Do we have to keep Grandma on a feeding tube forever? This book adapts a wildly successful high-school curriculum developed by Charles E. Rice, who taught for years at an Indiana high school in addition to his storied career at Notre Dame Law School. This classroom-tested curriculum has had life-changing effects. Rice’s students, who took the course in the late 1970s and early 1980s, credit this course for keeping them Catholic, while their peers turned to Zen, politics, or drugs in their search for ultimate meaning. Rice, with the valuable assistance of co-author and philosopher Theresa Farnan, updates this curriculum by incorporating the Catechism and the personalist philosophy of John Paul II into the timeless wisdom of the Church. Today’s young Catholics admire the faith more than ever, but need clear answers about what it is and who they are. The straight answers found in this book are a sure antidote to the confusion of the culture of death. The revised second edition contains expanded material from Pope Benedict XVI, the Catechism of the Catholic Church and other sources. The second edition, as did the first, has received the Imprimatur from Most Rev. John M. D’Arcy, bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend. The second edition has also received from the Office for the Catechism of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops a Declaration of Conformity, certifying that it is in conformity with the Catechism. The second edition is therefore included in the USCCB’s Conformity Listing of Catechetical Texts and is officially approved for use in Catholic schools and educational programs.
