Brandeis University Press Making Shabbat – Celebrating and Learning at
Book SynopsisAn accessible and engaging treatment of the experience of Jewish summer camps. This book tells the story of how Jewish camps have emerged as creators of positive spiritual experiences for Jewish youth in North America. When Jewish camps began at the dawn of the twentieth century, their leaders had little interest in creating Jewish spiritual experiences for their campers. Yet over the course of the past century, Jewish camps have gradually moved into providing primal Jewish experiences that diverse campers can enjoy, parents appreciate, and alumni fondly recall. Making Shabbat Real explores how Shabbat at camp became the focal point for these primal Jewish experiences, providing an interesting perspective on changing approaches to Jewish education and identity in North America. Trade Review“Making Shabbat: Celebrating and Learning at American Jewish Summer Camps, Reimer’s account of Shabbat at three highly regarded non-Orthodox Jewish summer camps, is another example of slow and deliberate Jewish educational research and the insights it can yield. . . . In drawing attention to how Shabbat is made at camp, Reimer uncovers how seemingly banal actions can set a foundation for rich experiences. . . . [This] book . . . exemplifies exactly the sort of rich and insightful scholarship necessary for nurturing vibrant, lived North American Judaism.” * Sources: A Journal of Jewish Ideas *“This gracefully written book is an outstanding ethnographic account of how Shabbat is created and transmitted at three different camps, which highlights the power of the quotidian of music, dance, prayer, community, and leadership. Reimer offers a rich and detailed understanding of what learning and education mean in these different contexts that vastly enlarges previous scholarship on summer camps… An especially timely work, as religious life is changing dramatically, and Reimer has offered many insights that should be helpful to anyone interested in how meaning is made and transmitted in religion.” -- Riv-Ellen Prell, Professor Emerita, Department of American Studies, University of Minnesota“From ruach mosh pits to post-havdalah hugs, Shabbat practices at camp differ from year-round Jewish life. This smart, engaging book sheds light on this phenomenon through historical analysis, rich ethnographic descriptions, and beautiful photographs from three contemporary camps of diverse denominations. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Jewish education - and camp alumni who want to take a trip down memory lane (or dirt path).” -- Sarah Bunin Benor, author of Hebrew Infusion: Language and Community at American Jewish Summer Camps"This book is for anyone who has experienced Shabbat at a Jewish camp and wondered what made it so special. After describing in detail how Shabbat is observed at three different camps, Reimer unpacks the core values of each camp, and the ‘rituals’ that allow some seemingly conflicting values to co-exist. Finally, he brings in key theoretical constructs to explain how lore and ritual intertwine to make Shabbat at camp so memorable.” -- Isa Aron, Professor Emerita of Jewish Education, Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of ReligionTable of Contents1. Christian Focus Publications Ltd Let the Children Worship
Book SynopsisJason Helopoulos encourages the church to embrace the important part children play in the life of the church and unfolds the enormous blessings to be found in having them present in the worship services of the congregation. He points out how the struggles are temporary – whereas the blessings can be eternal.Trade ReviewIn Jesus' ministry, the disciples were at one point indignant at the presence of children ... In this fine book, Jason Helopoulos makes a compelling Scriptural case for the inclusion of children in worship. It deserves serious and sustained consideration. -- Derek W. H. Thomas (Senior Minister of Preaching and Teaching, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina)In Let the Children Worship, Jason Helopoulos instills a sense of anticipation of what will happen as children are not only blessed by their presence among the body of Christ but also bless us with their presence. -- Nancy Guthrie (Author and Bible teacher)Let the Children Worship presents an easy-to-follow roadmap on the joy and responsibility of incorporating our children into corporate worship. I wish I had this book ten years ago! -- Brian H. Cosby (Pastor, Wayside Presbyterian Church, Signal Mountain, Tennessee)Sundays can be the hardest day of the week. I often find myself behind the piano, trying to focus on the tune instead of the visitors I invited for lunch, one eye on my pew-full of children. Jason's book provides solid refreshment for parents and church leaders, encouraging us to think clearly - biblically! - about what worship is and why we do it. Theological framework and practical applications for parents and leaders make this a book useful not only as a how-to guide, but also as a guidepost, encouraging us to view worship as a foretaste of heaven along our earthly pilgrimage. -- Rebecca VanDoodewaard (Author of ‘Your Future Other Half? and ‘Uprooted’, Grand Rapids, Michigan)In a series of short chapters, Jason Helopoulos explains the nature and importance of worship and then offers practical guidance on how to communicate this to our young people. This is a very useful and practical book which deserves to be widely read in our churches. -- Carl R. Trueman (Professor of Biblical and Religious Studies, Grove City College, Pennsylvania)

Canterbury Press Norwich The Mystery of Faith: Exploring Christian belief
Book SynopsisThe Mystery of Faith explores the essentials of Christian belief and the ancient spiritual practices that enable us to live and flourish in the light of God’s grace. It is written for those who are new to the Christian faith, are curious about it, want to understand their faith better or make more meaningful connections between faith and life. Using the structure of the Apostles Creed it offers clear explanations of core beliefs through the God we encounter in creation, in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit who makes God known in our world and in our lives today. John-Francis Friendship draws on the riches of the Christian tradition and his own experience of Religious life to introduce practices that guide our daily living as God’s people: prayer, scripture, the sacraments, worship, the company of saints. Throughout, questions for reflection and discussion make this an ideal resource for faith formation for individual and groups.Trade ReviewJohn-Francis draws on the wisdom of the ages to introduce faith in an accessible and engaging way. And he also draws on his own long experience as Franciscan, priest, and spiritual director to ground this tradition in the reality of one life. Dictum The Cross: A fresh look at the meaning of the
Book SynopsisThis fresh re-telling of the Easter story from the Last Supper to Calvary brings many new insights. The intrigue and betrayal in the air as the disciples ate; the fierce, costly love shown by Christ in Gethsemane, as his disciples slept; the illegal and unjust kangaroo court in the middle of the night; the drama of the earth becoming dark and quaking as the Son of God died. Read the story anew, as told and interpreted by this pastor-theologian. Questions included for personal reflection or for group discussion.Trade Review"From time to time a publication appears - of modest size and author - its value greater than a whole bookshelf of bestsellers. The Cross falls into that category. The fine quality of James Philip's mind will be immediately obvious. But his writing is also full of pathos. He is at one with his subject, and has clearly been more deeply impacted by it than by anything else." - Revd Prof Sinclair B. Ferguson, Chancellor's Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary

Equinox Publishing Ltd The Insider/Outsider Debate: New Perspectives in
Book SynopsisThe distinction between “insiders” and “outsiders” in religious studies has become an area of fruitful discussion in recent years. This anthology aims to extend that discussion by gathering newly commissioned essays from a diverse range of scholars, spanning a variety of disciplines and approaches, including ethnography, anthropology, theology and education. The result is a book that is at once accessible and readable, while remaining scholarly. The Insider/Outsider Debate has implications for numerous methodological issues in the study of religion, such as the emic/etic distinction, the distinction between religion and spirituality, the notions of “believing without belonging”, the claim to be “spiritual but not religious” and the existence of multiple, complicated, contesting religious identities. A particular focus of the volume is providing critiques of these methodological issues within the most recent academic approaches to religion – particularly models of lived and vernacular religion.Table of ContentsIntroduction Stephen E. Central European University Press Narratives of Adversity: Jesuits on the Eastern
Book SynopsisThe time scale of the study is from the "high tide" of the Society (often labeled "the first multinational corporation") in the fourth decade of the seventeenth century, until its suppression in 1773 by Pope Clement XIV. The book examines several of the communities situated along the periphery and the records that they left behind about their interactions with the local populations. It constructs a vivid picture of Jesuit life on the frontier that is built up in mosaic fashion and livened by compelling anecdotes. The Jesuits of Royal Hungary exercised a baroque expression modeled after the larger western cities of the Habsburg lands, which was a fragile splendor in part defined by the need to defend Catholicism from the hostility of Orthodox, Lutherans, Calvinists, and others.Trade Review"The history of Hungarian Jesuits is a challenge. While most of their writings may be in Latin, the fathers of the Society were the earliest advocates of Magyar as a literary lanuage. Moreover, to tackle modern scholarship, one needs to consult works in German, Hungarian, and Slovak. Extant manuscripts are scattered in many archives and libraries, from Rome, the headquarters of the Society, to Vienna and Budapest, the former imperial and present national capitals, Košice in Slovakia, and Alba Iulia in Romania, erstwhile regional centers of the Jesuit enterprise. Readers, therefore should be grateful for the scholarship and hard work of Peter Shore, author of a study on the Jesuits of Bohemia, who has turned his erudition to this new subject." * Austrian History Yearbook *"This is an impressionistic history of the Jesuits in towns located in parts of what are now Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Croatia, and Serbia, all ruled by the Habsburg dynasty in Vienna, from 1640 to 1773. The book has two themes: narratives of adversity, in which Jesuits overcome difficulties, and fragile splendor, meaning that despite the wonderful Baroque churches erected by or for Jesuits, they faced much opposition. Plagues, ethnic diversities, and anti-Habsburg sentiment offered additional obstacles. The author has done a good deal of reading in archives and printed literature, and the bibliography is large. There are many interesting anecdotes and tales. Recommended" * Choice *"Duty on the eastern rim of the Kingdom of Hungary was no plum assignment for a Jesuit in those days. It entailed the laborious restoration of the church in a region that was historically Catholic, for the most part. So it off ered no dazzling prospect of winning vast numbers of new souls as in the more exotic mission lands. Still, the Reformation and the Ottoman conquest and occupation had done great damage to Catholicism there that would require much hard, unglamorous work to undo. This imposed a regimen of grappling with the swarm of 'adversities'of the title—chiefly, plague, isolation, privation, and a recalcitrant populace—that yielded meager successes for the Order, apart from the spiritual gains of persevering in the Lord’s work despite stubborn obstacles. In this way, Shore argues, the Hungarian mission provides an instructive comparison with the more celebrated and colorful Jesuit enterprises across the oceans" * Slavic Review *"Using an impressive array of primary sources in several languages, the author discusses the experience of challenge and adversity amongst some of the Jesuits of the Empire from the moment of ‘high tide’ of the Society, in the fourth decade of the seventeenth century, to the Society’s suppression by papal brief (breve) in 1773. That experience emerges, in the documents generated by the brothers and priests, ‘as a complex mixture of subjective and individually varied reactions to events’. Shore explores the subjective, recorded responses of Jesuits to a variety of situations, amongst them adversity, doubt, miscommunication and failure. His exploration is aided significantly by our growing understanding of the different ways in which Jesuits collected, categorized and recorded information. In this regard, Shore raises questions which exercise every conscientious historian when confronting his or her sources. Shore’s study shows us that Jesuit culture in the Habsburg East thrived on adversity, an adversity most evident in the ‘clear-cut if infrequent moments when a Jesuit was given the choice between renouncing his identity or death’. His book is a invaluable source for our understanding of interplay between culture and religion in this part of Europe" * Slavonic and East European Review *Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Introduction: A Fragile Splendor Prelude I.
