    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThere have been serious complaints since Vatican II that many Catholics do not know the basic teaching of the Church on the essentials of the faith, such as the Ten Command-ments, the Seven Sacraments, the Sacrifice of the Mass and the twelve articles of the Creed. That was one of the main reasons for the production of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which was mandated by Blessed John Paul II and published in the 1990s. After Vatican II there was much emphasis on preaching that explains the daily readings from the Bible. That is what we now call a “homily.” Traditionally a sermon has been preaching on some point of doctrine or morals, illustrated and supported by quotes from the Bible. An unintended and unanticipated result of the homily has been the neglect of sermons and a lack of preaching on the fundamentals of the Catholic faith. When the Catechism appeared, some bishops, like Cardinal John J. O’Connor of New York, gave sermons based on it for over a year. The 54 doctrinal sermons in this book are presented in the hope that priests will make use of them to prepare real sermons that explain the basic truths of the Catholic faith. The sermons follow the basic outline of the Catechism: Creed, Sacraments, Commandments, and the Our Father. The purpose of these sermons is to promote a better understanding in the minds of the faithful of the beauty and depth of truth contained in our holy Catholic faith. The grasp of that truth should result in an increase of faith, hope and charity. • Where Did I Come From? Where Am I Going? How Do –

St Augustine's Press Where Did I Come From? Where Am I Going? How Do –

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisWhere Did I Come From? Where Am I Going? How Do I Get There? is a complete course on Catholicism, featuring concise, reader-friendly, relevant prose. Straight answers are tailored for today’s generation. Topics addressed include: Can I know anything? Can I know what God is like? How am I really in the image and likeness of God? What about my conscience? Am I a gift to others? What about my freedom? Is any sexual activity OK before marriage? Do we have to keep Grandma on a feeding tube forever? This book adapts a wildly successful high-school curriculum developed by Charles E. Rice, who taught for years at an Indiana high school in addition to his storied career at Notre Dame Law School. This classroom-tested curriculum has had life-changing effects. Rice’s students, who took the course in the late 1970s and early 1980s, credit this course for keeping them Catholic, while their peers turned to Zen, politics, or drugs in their search for ultimate meaning. Rice, with the valuable assistance of co-author and philosopher Theresa Farnan, updates this curriculum by incorporating the Catechism and the personalist philosophy of John Paul II into the timeless wisdom of the Church. Today’s young Catholics admire the faith more than ever, but need clear answers about what it is and who they are. The straight answers found in this book are a sure antidote to the confusion of the culture of death. The revised second edition contains expanded material from Pope Benedict XVI, the Catechism of the Catholic Church and other sources. The second edition, as did the first, has received the Imprimatur from Most Rev. John M. D’Arcy, bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend. The second edition has also received from the Office for the Catechism of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops a Declaration of Conformity, certifying that it is in conformity with the Catechism. The second edition is therefore included in the USCCB’s Conformity Listing of Catechetical Texts and is officially approved for use in Catholic schools and educational programs.

    Faithlife Corporation The Lord′s Prayer

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisYou pray it. But do you understand it? The Lord's Prayer has become so familiar to us that we don't think about what we're praying. It's a portrait of Jesus' heart. And in it Christians from different times, places, and traditions have been united. We pray it, but do we actually believe it? When Jesus taught his followers how to pray, he emphasized how uncomplicated it should be. There's no need for pretense or theatrics. Instead, simply ask for what you need as though you were speaking with your earthly father. This opens a window into Jesus' prayer life and presents us with a portrait of his heart for his followers. Wesley Hill re-introduces the Lord's Prayer. He shows us a God who is delighted to hear prayer. Petition by petition, in conversation with the Christian tradition, he draws out the significance of Jesus' words for prayer today.

Book SynopsisYou know them. But do you understand them? The Ten Commandments have become so familiar to us that we don't think about what they actually mean. They've been used by Christians throughout history as the basis for worship, confessions, prayer, even civil law. Are these ancient words still relevant for us today? Their outward simplicity hides their inward complexity. Jesus himself sums up the entire law in a pair of commandments: Love God with all your heart, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. Peter Leithart re-introduces the Ten Commandments. He shows us how they address every arena of human life, giving us a portrait of life under the lordship of Jesus, who is the heart and soul of the commandments.

It is living and active and has the power to save, give life, and heal. Do we read the Bible attuned to the power of God's word? John W. Kleinig opens up the riches found in the Bible. He likens God's word to a lavish meal that nourishes and satisfies our souls. He shows us the centrality of Scripture to Christian faith--the word through which the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit speak with one voice to believers on Earth.

Inter-Varsity Press Keswick Yearbook 2014: Searching For Reality In A

Book SynopsisWe have more access to knowledge than ever before but, paradoxically, we are still searching for truth – for a way to make sense of our questions. The questions don't stop when we become Christians, and so the 2014 Keswick Convention addressed the theme: Really? Searching for Reality in a Confusing World. During the three weeks of Convention we looked at the truth the gospel offers, how the Bible addresses the big questions of life, and how we can grow as disciples in an uncertain world. This Year Book includes a selection of talks given during the 2014 Convention: Bible teaching from Roger Carswell, Ian Coffey, Jonathan Lamb, Ruth Padilla de Borst, Becky Manley Pippert, Ivor Poobalan, Vaughan Roberts, David Robertson and Chris Sinkinson to help ground your faith in the life-transforming reality found in Jesus.

  • Anglo-Saxon Saints' Lives as History Writing in

Boydell & Brewer Ltd Anglo-Saxon Saints' Lives as History Writing in

Book SynopsisA groundbreaking assessment of the use medieval English history-writers made of saints' lives. The past was ever present in later medieval England, as secular and religious institutions worked to recover (or create) originary narratives that could guarantee, they hoped, their political and spiritual legitimacy. Anglo-SaxonEngland, in particular, was imagined as a spiritual "golden age" and a rich source of precedent, for kings and for the monasteries that housed early English saints' remains. This book examines the vernacular hagiography produced in a monastic context, demonstrating how writers, illuminators, and policy-makers used English saints (including St Edmund) to re-envision the bonds between ancient spiritual purity and contemporary conditions. Treating history and ethical practice as inseparable, poets such as Osbern Bokenham, Henry Bradshaw, and John Lydgate reconfigured England's history through its saints, engaging with contemporary concerns about institutional identity, authority, and ethics. Cynthia Turner Camp is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Georgia.Trade Review[A] very engaging and useful book that will be helpful to scholars in many areas of medieval studies, especially those working in Middle English hagiography or historiography. * JOURNAL OF ENGLISH AND GERMANIC PHILOLOGY *Highly detailed and carefully argued, Camp's study succeeds in showing how the creators of these lives manipulated not only historical narrative and perceptions of time, but also poetic form and hagiographic discourses to construct institutional identities and address audiences both within and without the monastery walls. * SPECULUM *[O]ffers interesting new ways of looking at the nature of late medieval English hagiographic literature and innovative paths of inquiry for hagiographic and memory studies. * THE MEDIEVAL REVIEW *Table of ContentsIntroduction Edith of Wilton and the Writing of Women's History Audrey Abroad: Spiritual and Genealogical Filiation in the Middle English Lives of Etheldreda Henry Bradshaw's Life of Werburge and the Limits of Holy Incorruption The Limits of Narrative History in the Written and Pictorial Lives of Edward the Confessor The Limits of Poetic History in Lydgate's Edmund and Fremund and the Harley 2278 Pictorial Cycle Bibliography

  • Basics for Believers

    Inter-Varsity Press Basics for Believers

Book SynopsisMany of us have felt the temptation to opt for a domesticated version of the gospel. We want enough to make us happy and secure, but not so much that it really affects our lives. We want ecstasy not repentance, security not selfless love and service. We may not like to admit it, but the temptation is there. It is nothing new, but perhaps it is especially strong today. Many changes in society and increasing self-indulgence all put pressure on believers to water down the gospel and its impact on our lives. The apostle Paul saw the insidious evil of similar influences in the Roman Empire of his day, and recognized that these pressures could harm the fledgling Christian community in Philippi. He couldn't visit them, but he wrote to encourage them to maintain basic Christian commitments and to be on guard against an array of dangers: temptations from within and seduction and opposition from without. In 'Basics for Believers', Don Carson opens up the life-transforming lessons of Philippians, showing us how we can put the whole gospel first, learn to live as disciples of Christ, and never give up the Christian walk.

Inter-Varsity Press Slugs and snails and puppy dogs' tails: Helping

Book SynopsisWe have such a problem with our boys,' ..is a common refrain in many churches. The probability, though, is that boys are not actually the problem, rather our attitude to them; our ideas of what a boy really is and what he needs in order to connect with God. Over the last few years, boys have been perceived to have been under-achieving at school, a problem in our society, and disengaged from our churches. It is Carolyn Edwards' heartfelt conviction that this is because we are not meeting boys' spiritual needs. Her experience is that boys are willing to engage in the struggle to make themselves heard and seen as they really are: full of energy, fun, feeling and spirituality. In this intensely creative and practical book, Carolyn provides ten ways that boys would willingly connect with God, given the opportunity. Prompts and practical ideas help readers apply her findings to the boys they know and work with.

In January 2009 Mark quit as the senior leader of a successful and progressive Anglican congregation, to found a ministry called The Father's House, dedicated to taking the Father's love to the fatherless. 'The task of the family of God is to take the Father's love to the fatherless. To do this, those who are already members of God's family need to have their father wounds healed. This book will help those with hearts broken by their earthly fathers to find in their Heavenly Father the love of all loves.' In Part 1, Mark describes the different ways in which fathers can hurt their children. In Part 2, he goes deeper, defining the wound as 'the orphan heart' and describing the main symptoms of this condition in peoples' lives. The Catholic University of America Press Thomas Shields and the Renewal of Catholic

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores the contribution of the Rev. Dr. Thomas Shields (1862-1921) to Catholic education in the United States of America in the late 19th and early 20th century.Fr. Shields was a pioneer in combining a career as an academic in Catholic University of America with the publication of many resources for schools. Given his pioneering role in aligning Catholic educational thought with emerging insights in the sciences, and his multi-layered commitment to Catholic education as scholar, author of textbooks and founder of initiatives in the field of Teacher Education, it seems fitting that his considerable body of work should be the subject of fresh scholarly investigation. The book is in five parts. Part 1, ""Catholicism as an Educational Movement"", sets out the contours of the intellectual climate in which Shields operated and presents Catholicism as a dynamic educational movement. Part 2, ""Responding to Progressive Thought"", explores the relationship between Progressivism and Catholic Education, showing how the Catholic Church responded to the challenges presented by Progressive thought. Part 3, ""Shields and the Reform of Pedagogy"", examines both Shields's general pedagogical principles and how they relate to Catholic education. Part 4, ""Forming Teachers in Heart and Mind"", considers Shields' ideas on Catholic Teacher Formation, exploring issues such as culture, vocation, method and curriculum. Part 5, ""The Catholic Education Series"", explores selected examples from Shields' Catholic Education Series to identify how his material for schools reflected, to a greater or lesser extent, his wider educational ideas. As the present age is also witness to considerable and deep-rooted challenges to Catholic education and, indeed to the Catholic understanding of the human person, Shields's work will inspire contemporary reform-minded Catholic educators to reassess and develop the mission of Catholic education in light of the traditions of the Church.Trade ReviewCatholic education in the West often involves an amalgam of secular educational theories infused with a religious content. Given that Catholic education involves the formation of the mind and character, it is important that we take a more holistic approach to the process of education itself. This should start by basing our educational theories on a true Catholic anthropology. Thomas Shields did just that, and so this excellent study of his work is timely given the urgent need to re-evangelize our culture."" - Phillip Booth, St. Mary's University, London""Well-researched and masterfully written, by a seasoned scholar and educator, this book is a must-read for every educator, in Catholic or secular institutions of higher learning. Shields Master Plan of teaching the old in the new, of introducing reform and renewal steeped deeply in the relation between faith and reason and interdisciplinarity, and his reform pedagogy which is not only theoretical but practical and part of the divine vocation of every educator is still relevant. The book guides one to be a reformer while being formator, an innovator while staying steadfastly true to tradition, forward-thinking while valuing the core of the Catholic education. The study provides a road map for educators as they seek to combine truth-seeking with novel opportunities."" - Ines A. Murzaku, Seton Hall University""To paraphrase the first chapter of this timely volume, Professor Franchi's contribution to the history of Catholic education in the United States contains things old and new. The life and work of Thomas Shields is well covered. The striking feature of this well written and researched account is how the rationale for Shields' work resonate with modern audiences who often find themselves grappling with similar issues. Franchi outlines how the genesis of Shields' educational thinking can be seen as a response to the philosophical position of Dewey and the progressivist movement. And here we see and ongoing challenge for Catholic educators, that is, how best to engage with the great cultural issues of the day. Shields was also concerned with the formation of teachers, another perennial topic for Catholic educators. This book is highly recommended for those who see the value of exploring and reflecting on the past to better understand the present and the future."" - Richard Rymarz, Director of Research and Head of Religious Education, BBI-TAITE. Table of ContentsDie religiöse Landschaft in Deutschland.- Jugend und Religion im berufsschulischen Kontext.- Das Phänomen „Sekte“: Begriff, Merkmale und Problemfelder.- Untersuchung zu Anfragen von Betroffenen einer Sektenproblematik.- Sektenprävention im pädagogischen Kontext.- Berufsschulischer Religionsunterricht als präventives Handlungsfeld.

  • Hollywood or History?: An Inquiry-Based Strategy

Information Age Publishing Hollywood or History?: An Inquiry-Based Strategy

Book SynopsisTeaching and learning through Hollywood, or commercial, film and television productions is anything but a new approach and has been something of a mainstay in the classroom for nearly a century. However, purposeful and effective instruction through film is not problem free and many challenges accompany classroom applications of Hollywood motion pictures. In response to the problems and possibilities associated with teaching through film, we are developing a collection of practical, classroom-ready lesson ideas that might bridge gaps between theory and practice and assist teachers endeavoring to make effective use of film in their classrooms. We believe that film can serve as a powerful tool in the social studies classroom and, where appropriately utilized, foster critical thinking and civic mindedness. The NCSS College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) framework, represents a renewed and formalized emphasis on the perennial social studies goals of deep thinking, reading and writing. Our hope is that this edited book might play a small role in the larger project of supporting practitioners, specifically 6-12 teachers of social studies and world religion content, by offering a collection of classroom-ready tools based on the Hollywood or History? strategy and designed to foster inquiry through the careful use of selected motion pictures and television productions.Topics of interest include the roots, rituals, symbols, beliefs, and controversial or significant people or events related to: The Abrahamic Religions: Judaism, Christianity, Islam Eastern Religions/Philosophies: Hinduism, Buddhism Indigenous Religions/Spirituality: First Nations, Traditional African Religions
