Random House USA Inc Words of Life: Jesus and the Promise of the Ten
Book SynopsisWhat if the Ten Commandments were not just a set of ancient rules, but a guide to experiencing the good life today??Adam Hamilton is a teacherofthe highest order, able to bridge the gap between very old divine teaching and very current human reality.??Barbara Brown Taylor, authorof Always a Guest: SpeakingofFaith Far from HomeNearly everyone has heard of the Ten Commandments, the list of ?thou-shalt-nots? found in the Bible. Jesus saw these commandments not as onerous burdens, but as guideposts to help us experience a good and beautiful life. These ten ancient ?words? were given to us by a loving God who longed to set safe boundaries, create order out of chaos, help communities live peacefully, and protect us?often from ourselves. In this book of Scripture and inspiration, bestselling author Adam Hamilton brings modern eyes to the most important set of ethics in history. He considers the commandments in their historical context, considering the meaning of each commandment in Hebrew, unpacking how Jesus reinterpreted them, and showing how every thou-shalt-not was intended to point to a life-giving ?thou shalt.? He also explores how the latest research in science and psychology illuminates these commandments, rightly understood, as a way of ordering one''s life beautifully in the present day. In a culture marked by workaholism, materialism, and social media-driven envy, God has given us a time-tested path that leads to gratitude, confidence, and peace.A landmark work from one of our most trusted biblical thinkers,Words of Lifeis an inspiring, thought-provoking read for anyone seeking to live a meaningful and joyful life.

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Church for Grown–Ups: Intentional Maturity for
Book SynopsisIn a self–centred, immature world the Church is called to be different. Christians of all ages should be growing in spiritual maturity. John Benton guides us through what the book of Philippians has to say about a maturing church and gives helpful suggestions for how this can be put into practice and shows the joy that can be ours when we live God’s way.Trade Review… discipleship means commitment, and commitment involves sacrifice. Paul’s deep love for the church is evident throughout Philippians, and John Benton’s love for the local church shines through this short book. Real joy comes when we are liberated from the endless and futile quest for self–fulfilment, and give ourselves to Christ and to His people -- Sharon James (Social Policy Analyst, The Christian Institute)John Benton reflects in a thoughtful and warm but also challenging way on how churches and individual Christians have become juvenile like the world rather than mature in Christ. He draws six aspects of maturity from Philippians and lays out practical ways in which we can pursue it. -- Garry Williams (Director, Pastors’ Academy, London Theological Seminary)Watch out cruise–control Christians—you will never look at Philippians the same way again! … John Benton deftly draws out six expectations Paul had for the church at Philippi (quality, priority, community, integrity, stability, and generosity). Every member of the Body of Christ would do well to read and reflect upon these truths for maturity in Christ. I profited much from this study. -- Flip Michaels (Associate Pastor, GraceLife Church, Hershey, Pennsylvania)

Smithsonian Books Objects of Devotion: Religion in Early America
Book SynopsisObjects of Devotion: Religion in Early America tells the story of religion in the United States through the material culture of diverse spiritual pursuits in the nation's colonial period and the early republic. The beautiful, full-color companion volume to a Smithsonian National Museum of American History exhibition, the book explores the wide range of religious traditions vying for adherents, acceptance, and a prominent place in the public square from the 1630s to the 1840s. The original thirteen states were home to approximately three thousand churches and more than a dozen Christian denominations, including Anglicans, Baptists, Catholics, Congregationalists, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, and Quakers. A variety of other faiths also could be found, including Judaism, Islam, traditional African practices, and Native American beliefs. As a result, America became known throughout the world as a place where, in theory, if not always in practice, all are free to believe and worship as they choose. The featured objects include an 1814 Revere and Sons church bell from Salem, the Jefferson Bible, wampum beads, a 1654 Torah scroll brought to the New World, the only known religious text written by an enslaved African Muslim, and other revelatory artifacts. Together these treasures illustrate how religious ideas have shaped the country and how the treatment and practice of religion have changed over time. Objects of Devotion emphasizes how religion can be understood through the objects, both rare and everyday, around which Americans of every generation have organized their communities and built this nation.
