Book SynopsisMaking the Right Choice unravels the entangled relationship between marriage, morality, and the desire for modernity as it plays out in the context of middle-class status concerns and aspirations for upward social mobility within the Sinhala-Buddhist community in urban Sri Lanka. By focusing on individual life-histories spanning three generations, the book illuminates how narratives about a gendered self and narratives about modernity are mutually constituted and intrinsically tied to notions of agency. The book uncovers how "becoming modern" in urban Sri Lanka, rather than causing inter-generational conflict, is a collective aspiration realized through the efforts of bringing up educated and independent women capable of making "right" choices. The consequence of this collective investment is a feminist conundrum: agency does not denote the right to choose, but the duty to make the "right" choice; hence agency is experienced not as a sense of "freedom," but rather as a burden of responsibility.Trade Review"In Making the Right Choice, Abeyasekera navigates the micro-politics of class and gender in contemporary Sri Lanka with skill and grace, providing the reader with a compelling picture of the fraught territory of marriage in twenty-first century Sri Lanka. Throughout, the argument is highly original and incisive, yet written with a novelist’s eye for the telling detail."— Jonathan Spencer, co-editor of The Intimate Life of Dissent: Anthropological Perspectives "With delicate prose and thoughtfulness, Abeyasekera draws us into the heart of middle-class Colombo, where personal choices on who to love reflect back on family narratives of progress and social mobility. Offering fresh perspectives on agency and responsibility, she moves between life stories across generations to unravel how, in South Asia, marriage is inexorably tied to crafting a self that is both modern and moral."— Ammara Maqsood, author of The New Pakistani Middle Class "Asha Abeyasekera gives us exquisitely wrought portraits of three generations of women in modernizing Sri Lanka as they navigate decisions of who, when, how, and why to marry. Attending to their stories about their marriages, Abeyasekera reveals the repertoires of meaning that enable the women to produce selves that honor traditional kin obligations while embodying modern values of personal choice and self-determination."— Jeanne Marecek, co-author of Gender and Culture in Psychology: Theories and PracticesTable of ContentsContents Series Foreword by Péter Berta Introduction 1 – Sinhala Marriage Practices: Then and Now 2 – Making the ‘Right’ Choice 3 – Structuring the ‘Right’ Choice 4 – The Virtuous Self: Failed Marriages 5 – The Valued Self: Singleness 6 – The Vindicated Self: Divorce Conclusion Notes Bibliography Index

Book SynopsisEmbracing Age: How Catholic Nuns Became Models of Aging Well examines a community of individuals whose aging trajectories contrast mainstream American experiences. In mainstream American society, aging is presented as a “problem,” a state to be avoided as long as possible, a state that threatens one’s ability to maintain independence, autonomy, control over one’s surroundings. Aging “well” (or avoiding aging) has become a twenty-first century American preoccupation. Embracing Age provides a window into the everyday lives of American Catholic nuns who experience longevity and remarkable health and well-being at the end of life. Catholic nuns aren’t only healthier in older age, they are healthier because they practice a culture of acceptance and grace around aging. Embracing Age demonstrates how aging in the convent becomes understood by the nuns to be a natural part of the life course, not one to be feared or avoided. Anna I. Corwin shows readers how Catholic nuns create a cultural community that provides a model for how to grow old, decline, and die that is both embedded in American culture and quite distinct from other American models.Instructor's Guide is available at no cost (https://d3tto5i5w9ogdd.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/26120146/corwin_instructor_guide_final.pdf).Open access edition funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe dignity of the person has always been a key theme of Pope John Paul II. Perhaps less well known is his emphasis on self-mastery as intrinsic to such dignity. In the love of man and woman, such mastery paves the way to self-giving and provides a richer, deeper experience of the union of persons. It also gives a new sensitivity to the beauty of masculinity and femininity as sexuality is seen in its original holiness: that is, by sharing in the Creator’s vision of the body. In this book, the author traces this daring portrait of human love back to the early writings of Karol Wojtyła. Trade Review« In studying Fr O’Sullivan’s work, I learned and discovered much that was fresh and illuminating for me.» (Michael Waldstein, Max Seckler Professor of Theology, Ave Maria University, Florida) « Alan O'Sullivan attempts, as few have done, to see the affinities between Wojtyła’s work and the theology of St Thomas Aquinas. He provides new and helpful insights into how Aquinas’ doctrine of knowledge by connaturality can provide a framework for understanding John Paul’s teaching concerning chastity’s role in enabling couples to discover the spousal meaning of the body. » (Michael Sherwin OP, Professor of Moral Theology, University of Fribourg)Table of ContentsCONTENTS: Love, Chastity and the Person – Love, Chastity and Self-Giving – Christ Appeals to the «Beginning» – Christ Appeals to the Human Heart – Ethos of the Redemption of the Body – The Body and Humanae vitae – Person, Christ, Communion – Trinitarian Communio: The Image of God – Wisdom, Love and the Person – Love and the Cardinal Virtues – Self-Mastery, Temperance, Chastity – The Economy of Truth and Love

  • The Mystic Way in Postmodernity: Transcending

Verlag Peter Lang The Mystic Way in Postmodernity: Transcending

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book challenges experiential, esoteric and colloquial understandings of mysticism by bringing a fresh relevance to the term through an interdisciplinary dialogue between literature, mysticism and theology in the context of postmodernity. In order to achieve this, the author takes selected writings of Iris Murdoch, Denise Levertov and Annie Dillard, and incorporates them into various stages of a redesigned mystic way. The fourteenth-century mystic Julian of Norwich is invoked throughout as a role model whom these three writers seek to emulate as popular writers, contemplatives and theologians. As theologians who are concerned with the pressing issues of our age, Grace Jantzen, Dorothee Soelle and Sallie McFague are drawn on as conversation partners to complete the three-way discussion. The author maintains that understanding the writing and reading of creative texts in the context of practical mysticism facilitates an integrated approach to the use of literature for theological expression.Trade Review«This is Sue Yore’s first book and one can but hope that it will not be her last. Book SynopsisThis collection of essays was written to mark the fortieth anniversary of the Second General Conference of Latin American Bishops, which convened at Medellín, Colombia, in 1968. Inspired by the Second Vatican Council and seeking to implement its vision, the bishops viewed the occasion as a decisive one for Latin America, which they saw as standing ‘on the threshold of a new epoch in the history of our continent’. It appears to have been a time full of zeal for emancipation, of liberation from every form of servitude, of personal maturity and of collective integration. Forty years later, however, it is appropriate to remember the event and to review the significance of liberation theology in light of all that has happened during the intervening period. The colloquium at the Milltown Institute, Dublin, which led to this book, sought to do precisely that: to establish where liberation theology now stands by questioning whether it really is a significant theological and ecclesial movement or merely a moment whose time has passed, and to investigate its enduring legacy.Table of ContentsContents: Mario I. This volume presents exegetical, theological, and ethical arguments as well as evidence from the human sciences to advocate for the recognition of homosexuality as a natural variant of the human capacities to love and to form relationships.

Book SynopsisThe tractate Keritot of the Babylonian Talmud belongs to the Order of Qodashim in the Mishnah. It discusses the Temple and its rituals, especially sacrifices, but deals mostly with laws of incest, sexual transgressions, childbirth, and miscarriages. In this commentary, Federico Dal Bo provides a historical, philological and philosophical investigation on these gender issues. He discusses almost the entire tractate, referring to many other sources, Jewish (the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Sifra, and other rabbinic texts) as well as non-Jewish (Akkadian, Hittite, and Ugaritic). The author also provides accurate philological observations both on the Mishnah and the Gemara. Finally, he addresses gender issues by combining a reductionistic approach to Talmudic study (the so called "Brisker method") with philosophical deconstruction. Dal Bo shows that in nearly the entire tractate Keritot the rabbis discuss human sexuality in a tendentious and restrictive way, claiming that heterosexuality is the only proper sexual contact and progressively stigmatizing any other kind of sexual behavior.

Book SynopsisTeresa J. Calpino's social-historical examination opens out the significance of two women often bypassed in studies of Acts of the Apostles, Tabitha (Acts 9:36—43) and Lydia (Acts 16:11—15). In this first ever work to analyze these women as a pair, Calpino takes special notice of the ways in which depictions of the ideal woman in Greco-Roman literature are at variance with the descriptions of Tabitha and Lydia. She uncovers the signals to the Greco-Roman audience concerning each woman's portrait, as single, financially independent and socially respected as benefactresses, but each in her own unique manner. While recognizing certain differences in the societal parameters and cultural conventions that still held in the Greek East and Roman West, the author shows how each woman clearly belongs to the new movement across the Empire in which women take a more active part in business and commerce, as leaders and entrepreneurs. The particular cameo appearance of each woman reflects in an important manner that rather than shrinking into the background, women continued to play a vital role in post-Pauline, emergent Christianity.

Book SynopsisSex, Media and theology a provocative mix. Reactions can vary from rejection to openness and curiosity. This volume follows the latter path: on the background of changes in contemporary sexual culture and theological developments in the reflection on sexuality, three media internet, advertising and film are analysed with respect of their representation of sexuality and their contribution to theological reflections on sex. This shows: sex in media is more than a provocation; it provides an inspiration for theological thinking about human beings, their relationships with others, and also with God.

Book SynopsisThe author reclaims the patristic Christological use of perichoresis by showing how in bringing together different entities, such as God and Nature in unity as the one person of Christ, we can acknowledge the perichoresis between divine human and nature. Christological perichoresis supports the idea that the whole creation is included in God’s recreated cosmos, in response to the redeeming power of Christ who entered the web of life as a creature. Trinitarian relationships bear a Christological message for intentional openness towards the «other». Thus ecofeminism can be considered from a Christian view, realizing Christ’s «cosmic» role in the salvation of the entire cosmos.Table of ContentsContents: Perichoresis – Is there any Hope for my City of Athens? – The Ecocrisis of our Era: Discussed from an Ecofeminist – Ecofeminist Theologies Challenging Dualisms – Trinitarian Perichoresis – Christological Perichoresis – Conclusions for an Ecofeminist – Perichoretic Praxis in Athens.

Book SynopsisIn central Thailand, a flamboyantly turbaned gay medium for the Hindu god of the underworld posts Facebook selfies of himself hugging and kissing a young man. In Myanmar’s largest city Yangon, a one-time member of a gay NGO dons an elaborate wedding dress to be ritually married to a possessing female spirit; he believes she will offer more support for his gay lifestyle than the path of LGBTQ activism. The only son of a Chinese trading family in Bangkok finds acceptance for his homosexuality and crossdressing when he becomes the medium for a revered female Chinese deity. And in northern Thailand, female mediums smoke, drink, flaunt butch masculine poses and flirt with female followers when they are ritually possessed by male warrior deities. Across the Buddhist societies of mainland Southeast Asia, local queer cultures are at the center of a recent proliferation of professional spirit mediumship. Drawing on detailed ethnographies and extensive comparative research, Deities and Divas captures this variety and ferment. The first book to trace commonalities between queer and religious cultures in Southeast Asia and the West, it reveals how modern gay, trans and spirit medium communities all emerge from a shared formative matrix of capitalism and new media. With insights and analysis that transcend the modern opposition of religion vs secularity, it provides fascinating new perspectives in transnational cultural, religious and queer studies.

  • Peeters Publishers Family's Many Faces - La famille au pluriel:

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe diversity of family models presents great challenges for contemporary Christians, from ethical point of view, as well as the spiritual level and the living together. Family patterns are in continuous mutation which is a potential source of conflict. Many scholars, including sociologists, theologians, psychologists, and philosophers take this subject to heart. They meet to discuss a number of issues concerning the family: the forms of contemporary family, the future of the family or families, their challenges and needs. This book is to promote conversation about the family between secular perspectives and Christian approaches. In three parts, this volume deals with current research in the field of human sciences. The first part discusses the structural dimension, treating the impact of attachment theory, analyzing the investigations concerning family separation and taking into consideration contemporary parenting ethical issues. In the second part, relevant ethical, pastoral and psychological issues related to contemporary tensions in the field are processed. As for the third part, it seeks the indices, the spiritual and therapeutic pathways in the heart of the great diversity that is lived.

Book Synopsis-- With a foreword from Jan Jaap de Ruiter. Translation and Afterword by Adi S. Bharat. -- In Homosexuality, Transidentity, and Islam: A Study of Scripture Confronting the Politics of Gender and Sexuality, Ludovic-Mohamed Zahed systematically analyses the entirety of Islamic scriptural sources that relate to the question of gender and sexuality in relation to their historical contexts. Through an approach that is certainly more politically engaged than that of most Islamic thinkers of our time, he clarifies key theological concepts that may seem esoteric to the uninitiated. In doing so, he makes a compelling case for the compatibility of sexual and gender diversity within Islam. Zahed also examines the historical and contemporary socio-political impacts of inclusive and exclusive (or, quite simply, homophobic, transphobic, and misogynistic) interpretations of scripture. This important study dynamically examines the connections between scripture, interpretation, and the politics of gender and sexuality.Table of ContentsForeword Introduction I - The Qur'anic Ethics of "Nature": Gender, Sexuality, and Diversity 1a.
