Morgan James Publishing llc The Healing Church: What Churches Get Wrong about
Book SynopsisTwo-thirds of men and a third of women who attend church regularly say they struggle with pornography. Yet only 7% of churches offer specific resources and support to their congregations. Pastors and church leaders are well aware of the issue of pornography—thanks to decades of studies and Christian blog and magazine articles—however the local church is caught in a painful trap. When Christians are too ashamed to admit their struggle, church leaders aren’t able to directly support those who are actively struggling; when church attendees do find the courage to seek help, they often receive ineffective support from pastors and ministry leaders due to lack of proactive planning. As a former journalist and current Director of Recovery Education for Covenant Eyes, Sam Black understands the stronghold pornography can have on an individual’s life. His writing in The Healing Church actively addresses these issues and provides clear guidance for ministry leaders as they support those who seek to live in freedom. In The Healing Church, ministry leaders will discover how to create safe spaces and apply processes that restore those trapped in compulsive behaviors with pornography. Sam Black outlines the most successful examples from churches currently providing meaningful aid and includes stories of Christians who found healing from porn strongholds, as evidence of the type of healing that pastors and church leaders can provide. In researching this book, Sam Black conducted more than 70 interviews not only with pastors, counselors, and ministry leaders, but also with everyday people who recovered from a secret life of sin and are helping others who feel trapped by porn and unwanted sexual behaviors. The Healing Church affirms how those who experience true brokenness and surrender to discipleship and life change become strong servants to the Body of Christ and healthier as people overall. When the selfish become selfless, when the idolators learn to worship Christ, when the prideful become meek, they become more fulfilled as servants and filled with purpose.Today, the local church has choices. It can largely ignore the problems of pornography because they are too unseemly. It can chastise, rebuke, and cast out, which sends more people into hiding. Or it can lead people through a grace-filled process to the foot of the Cross, where strongholds are crushed and where stronger servants arise.

Harvest House Publishers,U.S. Risen Motherhood Deluxe Edition
Book SynopsisThe deluxe edition of this Publishers Weekly bestseller includes three all-new chapters. Join Emily and Laura as they reveal how the gospel applies to your everyday life, bringing hope, freedom, and joy in every area of motherhood. Trade Review“Parenting is often the crucible in which we learn what we can and cannot control. Laura and Emily remind us that while we cannot control people or circumstances, we can control our perspective. They offer us a framework for motherhood that transcends time and culture but that also faithfully addresses us in the here and now. I'm thankful for this hope-filled book.”—Jen Wilkin, director of classes and curriculum, The Village Church, and author of Women of the Word, None like Him, and In His Image“Reading Risen Motherhood is like enjoying a long conversation with two girlfriends who will make you laugh out loud, comfort your tears, and faithfully speak life-giving words of truth to your soul. With wisdom and insight, Emily Jensen and Laura Wifler help moms connect the story line of Scripture to the daily realities of motherhood. This book is one every mom should read—I can’t wait to share it with others!”—Melissa Kruger, director of women’s content for The Gospel Coalition and the author of Walking with God in the Season of Motherhood“Emily and Laura are the best friends I wish I'd had during the difficult days of early motherhood, when my patience wore thin, my boredom loomed large, and my sense of worth and purpose became muddled. The wisdom they have to offer in the pages of this book is seasoned and scriptural.”—Nancy Guthrie, author, Bible teacher, and ongoing pursuer of risen motherhood“Risen Motherhood points us to the Source and Sustainer of resurrection vitality and life that weary mamas so desperately need. Its pages are Word-saturated, helping us to think biblically about how the gospel applies to the majestic and the mundane moments of motherhood."—Karen Hodge, board chair of Risen Motherhood, coordinator of women’s ministries for the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), and coauthor of Transformed and Life-Giving Leadership“Emily and Laura want you to know the gospel so intimately that it sinks deep into your mind and heart and transforms every tiny corner of your life. These two moms are wonderful traveling companions—they know the heat of the moment, the temptations that come with deep trials, and the unexpected pain of Legos underfoot. Let their life-giving words point you to Christ and remind you that the light of the Son has dawned and that you walk in the warmth of a risen motherhood.”—Abigail Dodds, author of (A)Typical Woman, blogger and regular contributor at Desiring God“This wonderful book offers deep sympathy and understanding to those who face the stress and challenges of motherhood. It also provides moms with a clear vision of their profound purpose and the hope they need to live vibrantly and meaningfully within this divine role. I highly recommend this book.”—Sally Clarkson, bestselling author and host of the At Home with Sally podcast“Admittedly, I am not exactly the core audience for Risen Motherhood—the ministry or the book. That said, I always keep my ear to the ground for ministries I can grow to trust and then recommend to others. I’m delighted to say that for as long as I’ve followed Emily’s and Laura’s work I have benefitted from it. Even better, I have seen many Christian moms I know and love read their website, listen to their podcast, and grow through it. I’m thankful they’ve now added this book to the many channels through which they serve God by serving his people.”—Tim Challies, bestselling author and popular blogger and book reviewer“Risen Motherhood delivers practical and present wisdom, anchored to timeless biblical truth. In Risen Motherhood, moms find empathy, encouragement, and the reminder that true hope for moms is through the transforming work of the gospel, alone.”—Ruth Chou Simons, bestselling author of GraceLaced and Beholding and Becoming: The Art of Everyday Worship

Inner Traditions Bear and Company Tantric Kali: Secret Practices and Rituals
Book SynopsisAccording to traditions going back to pre-Vedic times, Kali sprang from the third eye of the Goddess Durga as a destructive and terrifying manifestation of feminine power sent to lay waste to the forces of evil. Throughout India to this day, Kali is worshipped as the destroyer of bondage, capable of liberating her devotee from all rules and subjugation. In The Tantric Kali, Daniel Odier presents the mythology, practices, and rituals of Kali worship in the Tantric Kaula tradition within Kashmiri Shaivism. He reveals the practices of Vamachara, commonly known as the Left-hand Path but more accurately translated as the Path of Shakti. In this tradition the body itself is Kali’s temple, and it is therefore unnecessary to reject or deny the body to know union with the divine. Instead, nothing is regarded as pure or impure and there is complete freedom from rules. Focused on working directly with forbidden emotions and behaviors, this path allows the seeker to transcend obstacles to liberation through sexual union. According to the Kaula Upanishad, “In your behavior do the opposite to what the norms dictate but remain in consciousness.” This is the essence of Tantra. Kali is absolute reality: manifested as woman intoxicated by desire, she frees the tantric practitioner from all desire except union with the divine.Trade Review“Tantric Kali provides depth as we are guided through mythology, ritual, visualization, and life teachings to have a direct experience of Shakti from the wisdom teachings of the Kaula path. Daniel offers another treasure from the heart of his realization—steeped in his lineage with translations of the oldest ritual to Kali--songs and hymns and truly transformative practices and meditations direct from the root. A full-spectrum offering, this is the birth of another Odier classic. Daniel is one of the extraordinary and skillful practitioner teacher-scholar-writers of our time. Tantric Kali is juicy, liberating, radical, and exquisite and offers a unique compendium of tantric Kali sadhana accessible to all.” * Shiva Rea, yogini, founder of Samudra Global School for Living Yoga, and author of Tending the Heart *Table of ContentsPreface IntroductionKali and the Tantric Path1 Kali's Origins and Symbolism2 The Kaula Tradition 3 Preliminary Practices of the Kaula Tradition 4 The Nirrutara Tantra Scripture That Is Superior to All Others5 The Rituals of Kali and the Sacred Union 6 Advancing on the Kaula Path Meditation on the Eight Chakras, the Yoginis’Ultimate Practice of the Heart, and the Devouring of Inner Demons7 Hymns and Songs in Praise of Kali NotesBibliography Index About the Author

David C Cook Publishing Company Cry Like a Man
Book Synopsis As a leader in teaching, training, and transforming boys in Detroit, Jason Wilson shares his own story of discovering what it means to ?be a man? in this life-changing memoir. His grandfather?s lynching in the deep South, the murders of his two older brothers, and his verbally harsh and absent father all worked together to form Jason Wilson?s childhood. But it was his decision to acknowledge his emotions and yield to God?s call on his life that made Wilson the man and leader he is today. As the founder of one of the country?s most esteemed youth organizations, Wilson has decades of experience in strengthening the physical, mental, and emotional spirit of boys and men. In Cry Like a Man, Wilson explains the dangers men face in our culture?s definition of ?masculinity? and gives readers hope that healing is possible. As Wilson writes, ?My passion is to help boys and men find strength to become courageously transparent about their own brokenness as I shed light on the symptoms and causes of childhood trauma and ?father wounds.? I long to see men free themselves from emotional incarceration?to see their minds renewed, souls weaned, and relationships restored.?

Baker Publishing Group Divine Sex – A Compelling Vision for Christian
Book SynopsisChristianity Today Book Award Winner The digital revolution has ushered in a series of sexual revolutions, all contributing to a perfect storm for modern relationships. Online dating, social media, internet pornography, and the phenomenon of the smartphone generation have created an avalanche of change with far-reaching consequences for sexuality today. The church has struggled to address this new moral ecology because it has focused on clarity of belief rather than quality of formation. The real challenge for spiritual formation lies in addressing the underlying moral intuitions we carry subconsciously, which are shaped by the convictions of our age. In this book, a fresh new voice offers a persuasive Christian vision of sex and relationships, calling young adults to faithful discipleship in a hypersexualized world. Drawing from his pastoral experience with young people and from cutting-edge research across multiple disciplines, Jonathan Grant helps Christian leaders understand the cultural forces that make the church's teaching on sex and relationships ineffective in the lives of today's young adults. He also sets forth pastoral strategies for addressing the underlying fault lines in modern sexuality.Table of ContentsContentsForeword by James K. A. Smith1. NEWTYPE Publishing Unpunishable: Ending Our Love Affair with
Book SynopsisTwo thousand years ago, Jesus Christ revealed the Father to humanity, not as an angry punisher of sinners, but as a merciful forgiver bent on reconciliation with His lost sons and daughters. Through Christ’s perfect sacrifice, the Father ensured that inside this reconciled relationship with Him, nothing we could ever do could separate us from His love. He made us unpunishable. Yet the body of Christ struggles to create a relational culture that accurately reflects the heart of the Father—a culture of mature love that drives away the fear of punishment (1 John 4:18) and leads people who sin on a journey of repentance, restoration, and reconciliation. In fact, the fear of punishment often seems to have the strongest hold at the leadership level in most churches. Many leaders live in isolation and performance, and often burn out or crash morally, because they believe that if they have any problems, they will be punished—a belief that is too often realized. At the same time, these leaders struggle to see how they can lead and protect people without using tools of punishment when people sin. Unpunishable is a call to all believers, but especially leaders, to end our dysfunctional love affair with the fear of punishment and build a relational culture that empowers people to walk in the light of freedom and love, own and clean up their messes, and mature into sons and daughters who look like the Father.

Each talks to the reader about what he and she have learned, providing a balance between male and female perspectives that has been absent from previous books on this topic. John and Stasi begin Love & War with an obvious confession: Marriage is fabulously hard. But beneath and behind the inevitable tensions a man and woman “locked in the same submarine” are going to have, the real battle is against the work of the Enemy, who plots and schemes to tear love apart. The Eldredges show how couples can win “by fighting for each other, instead of against each other.” As they say, “We live in a great love story, set in the midst of war.”“This is a book of wisdom and hope…a beautiful labor th

John Murray Press In the Shelter
Book SynopsisIt is in the shelter of each other that the people live.Drawing on this Irish saying, poet, storyteller and theologian Pádraig Ó Tuama relates ideas of shelter and welcome to journeys of life, using poetry, story, biblical refelction and prose to open up gentle ways of living well in a troubled world. The fourth gospel tells of Jesus arriving in the room where the disciples are gathered, full of fear, on Easter Sunday. He does not chide or admonish; instead he says ''Peace be with you'', which, in the Aramaic of his day, was simply a greeting. To people locked in a room of fear he said ''Hello,'' welcoming them to a place of deep encounter: encounter with themselves, with their fear, with each other and with the incarnate one in their midst.Interweaving everyday stories with narrative theology, gospel reflections with mindfulness and Celtic spirituality with poetry, In the Shelter reveals the transformational power of weTrade ReviewReading this personal meditation about life now, we are reminded of Augustine's Confessions and Newman's Apologia: it comes from the heart, it recognises the hurts and the triumphs, and it encourages us to say 'hello' to new things. * Network Magazine *

Georgetown University Press Sexual Ethics: A Theological Introduction
Book SynopsisTwo principles capture the essence of the Catholic tradition on sexual ethics: that each and every marriage act must remain open to the transmission of life, and that any human genital act must occur within the framework of marriage. In the Catholic tradition, moral sexual activity is institutionalized within the confines of marriage and procreation, and sexual morality is marital morality. But theologians Todd Salzman and Michael Lawler contend that there is a disconnect between many of the Church's absolute sexual norms and other theological and intellectual developments explicitly recognized and endorsed in the Catholic tradition, especially since the Second Vatican Council. These developments include the shift from a primary static worldview to a historically conscious worldview, one that recognizes reality as dynamic, evolving, changing, and particular. By employing such a historically conscious worldview, alternative claims about the moral legitimacy of controversial topics such as contraception, artificial reproduction, and homosexual marriage can faithfully emerge within a Catholic context. Convinced of the central role that love, desire, and fertility play in a human life, and also in the life of Christian discipleship, the authors propose an understanding of sexuality that leads to the enhancement of human sexual relationships and flourishing. This comprehensive introduction to Catholic sexual ethics - complete with thought-provoking study questions at the end of each chapter - will be sure to stimulate dialogue about sexual morality between Catholic laity, theologians, and the hierarchy. Anyone seeking a credible and informed Catholic sexual ethic will welcome this potentially revolutionary book.Trade ReviewThis book is productively controversial... Salzman and Lawler have revived the call to dialogue by writing this text. Horizons The book includes questions to the reader at the end of each chapter and these work well as they challenge the reader to engage both at a theological and personal level. The book is written very clearly and in accessible language making it of use to undergraduates and Church groups examining these issues. Its unpacking of doctrine and ethics is sensitively done but as mentioned the authors are not slow to demonstrate where rethinking urgently needs to take place. They clearly sit within the tradition but a tradition that they see as dynamic and changing. The Expository Times Salzman and Lawler do good Catholic theology, showing how current magisterial teachings may not be faithful or in accord with Catholic theological understandings or traditions. This book is highly recommended for libraries and classroom use. -- Aaron Klink, Duke University Religious Studies Review Will help further dialogue within Catholic circles. Catholic Books Review Salzman and Lawler masterfully critique Catholic teaching in light of the many sexual issues Christianity faces today... This fascinating introduction to sexual ethics is sure to generate much conversation and debate. It is a must for any course on religion and sexuality.
