Bloomsbury Publishing (UK) Contextualizing Gender in Early Christian Discourse
Book SynopsisOffers an introduction to feminist and gender-critical perspectives on the New Testament and other early Christian writings. This book sets out the methodology and hermeneutical issues and gives examples of how gender-critical exegesis affects the reading of texts.Trade Review‘Caroline Vander Stichele and Todd Penner are arguably the most creative and learned intellectual partnership in contemporary New Testament and Christian origins scholarship. Both are rightly known for their wide-ranging knowledge of critical theory, Christian origins scholarship and ancient sources. Contextualizing Gender in Early Christian Discourse is a predictably impressive addition to their published work but this time with a more introductory focus. In addition to functioning as a first-class introductory text, this book moves beyond standard introductions to the New Testament and Christian origins in that it offers readers valuable summaries of prominent thinkers (e.g. Foucault, Butler, Said, Bhabha), interwoven with their influence and potential applications in the study of the New Testament and Christian origins. There is a common and not unfair complaint that works grounded in contemporary critical theory can have a tendency to be near-impossible to understand for those outside the discourse. These authors, however, could not legitimately be accused of such a thing. Their book is clearly written, neatly laid out and full of valuable and creative examples from sources ancient and modern, both famous and not-so-famous. Not only does Contextualizing Gender in Early Christian Discourse deserve to be on the bibliography for New Testament and/or Christian origins courses, it would make a perfect entry point for more experienced scholars unfamiliar or out-of-touch with contemporary ideological criticism and critical theory. As the book contains plenty of original insights, seasoned ideological critics will also discover a thing or two. While we could all learn from the chapters in this book, the chapter on ‘Gender and the Modern Interpreter' really ought to be read by all scholars in the guild, no matter what their favoured approaches may be, because it constitutes an accurate, incisive, morally-charged, and potentially revolutionary critique of the academic discipline of biblical studies.' - James Crossley, Department of Biblical Studies, University of Sheffield, UK -- James Crossley‘In this very accessible, well-written and engaging book, the authors address early Christianity as discourse and locate gender as a core dynamic in that discourse by drawing on an impressive range of feminist theory. The book is a highly successful attempt to conceptualise Early Christian studies as part of a broader Humanities curriculum. They see as the vital issue of our time to reestablish critical-thinking engagement in our classrooms and institutions, and they contribute massively towards that goal.' - Jorunn Økland, Centre for Gender Research, University of Oslo, Norway. -- Jorunn Økland‘As two of the more accomplished and compelling editors, organizers, collaborators and thinkers (in their own right), Caroline Vander Stichele and Todd Penner have done it again. In getting us to "think beyond Thecla," their intersectional and boundary-crossing approach moves beyond biblical studies to grapple with some of the more important figures in the humanities (including Foucault, Butler, and Said among many others). Like so many manifestations and constructions of gender, their argument is complicated, yet accessible and insistently relevant. Such matters are important to learn and think about—something I aspire to do with students and colleagues alike... with, through, and beyond this book!' - Joseph Marchal, Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Ball State University, Muncie, IN, USA -- Joseph Marchal‘Navigating the intersections of biblical, ancient, and gender studies can often put the student of early Christian literature in a space reminiscent of a circus hall of mirrors. In this short and stunning book, Caroline Vander Stichele and Todd Penner offer rare theoretical and methodological clarity and transparency, as well as substantial resources for renegotiating, and reconfiguring, such difficult terrain without relying on easy assumptions about ancient or modern texts, contexts, and histories of interpretation. Contextualizing Gender in Early Christian Discourse is not only an eagerly anticipated contribution to professional gender-critical conversations in the field—it is also an eminently teachable book that engages students and teachers about shared material, and our shared enterprise, as learners and scholars in the world today. Incisive and accessible, concerned with the past and forward-thinking, collaboratively written, politically transparent: this book represents a powerful dedication to imagining what can be possible, and invites readers to similarly commit to such imagination.' - Davina C. Lopez, Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, FL, USA -- Davina C. Lopez"This gender-critical approach introduced in this volume seeks to situate the NT and early Christian writings in the broader context of ancient literary and religious traditions, to focus on discourse as a constituent aspect of identity formation, to foster an appreciation for gender issues, to continue to value a historical approach, to stress the role of ideology in the formation of the worlds of the text as well as ancient and modern readers, and to highlight the colonizing nature of empire. After a ten-page introduction, it introduces a gender-critical approach, contextualizes gender in the Greco-Roman world, discusses boundaries and bodies in early Christian discourse, reflects on gender and the modern interpreter, and considers reading (for) gender. Vander Stichele, university docent in religious studies at the University of Amsterdam, and Penner, professor of religious studies at Austin College in Sherman, TX, conclude that thinking beyond Thecla entails giving serious consideration to the structures and mechanisms of boundary-crossing, which is one of the critical components of their gender-critical approach." -New Testament Abstracts, Vol. 54This book is highly recommended for students, but will also be of interest to more established scholars seeking to apply ideology-critical approaches to ancient texts. -- Journal for the Study of The New Testament, Volume 33 Number 5 ‘Students of all ages and occupations will benefit form Vander Stichele and Penner's clear, concise prose and their frequent summaries and reviews of important, current scholarship...Those who desire a greater understanding of the gender-critical approach and who appreciate Foucault's thought will find this book a useful tool with which to explore early Christian discourses and our own world.' —Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and Theology'Contextualising Gender in Early Christian Discourse is a comprehensive survey of early Christian discourse of gender in scripture. The book draws on a remarkable range of feminist theory, briefly considering the history of the New Testament interpretation, its role in the Christian canon, and its major theologies related to a gender-critical approach. The purpose of Contextualising Gender is to analyze different aspects of the representation of gender, sex, and sexuality in early Christian texts, with attention to their historical and contemporary significance.' - Igal German, Wycliffe College (Toronto School of Theology), Cananda -- Igal German * Theological Book Review *Table of Contents1.Gender: Old and New; 2.Canon in Context; 3.Methods and Meaning; 4.In Our Image; 5.Gender-Critical Readings.

Bloomsbury Publishing (UK) Bodies Embodiment and Theology of the Hebrew Bible The Library of Hebrew BibleOld Testament Studies
Book SynopsisThis collection brings consideration of the human body onto the grid of theological studies.Trade ReviewThe focus of this volume of collected papers is the appropriate reading lens for interpretation of embodiment language, with regard to God and to human beings, in the Hebrew Bible. The papers explore the subject of the complex anthropomorphisms in the biblical books, with relation to God’s biblical bodies, human biblical bodies, divine bodies, human bodies, and today’s reader. This approach is viewed as innovative and separate from much previous biblical scholarship which centred on spiritual interpretations of bodies, especially the metaphysical interpretation of the divine body ... This volume combines a desire to discuss overarching issues about the use of the human form within biblical theology with attention to specific texts and topics relevant to the study of the Hebrew Bible. -- Mary E. Lexington Books Gays and Grays
Book SynopsisGays and Grays tells the story of a unique Catholic parish. Most Holy Redeemer Parish in San Francisco is in the center of the world''s first gay neighborhood, The Castro. This parish was the center of the hostility to the arriving gay population in the 1970s; but paradoxically was itself transformed into a welcoming parish. The old time parishioners, the gray, bonded with the new comers, the gay, particularly in a joint compassionate response to the crisis of AIDS. A charismatic pastor, FR Tony McGuire also played a key role in the transformation of this interesting parish. Most Holy Redeemer was changed from a dying parish to a vital place where gay and straight people together created something new. Father Donal Godfrey shows how this parish became prophetic and compassionate, through conflict and compromise at times; despite opposition from many sources, including the institutionalized homophobia of the church and society. Rather than becoming embittered, the parish opened up toTrade ReviewGays and Grays is a fascinating history of a congregation in a changing neighborhood that decides to continue ministering to its existing congregation (the grays) while including a radically new constituency (the gays), and grow numerically in the process. In some ways this book could be a handbook on organizational change: Godfrey gives the reader intimate details of the step by step process through which the leadership of the congregation, clergy and lay, took initiative, resisted restraining forces, and stayed faithful to its missions (to gay and gray). What is special about this book is that it does not see change as happening through a single denouement that sets everything on the path to fulfillment; rather it documents the many, many actions and accomplishments needed to finally add up to significant change. The book is rich with understanding of the various voices within the gay community, the complexity of the Catholic Church (including the Archdiocese and Rome), and the interconnectedness of this congregation with other churches and groups with the community. If you’re looking for a good read, deeper understanding of the gay community in San Francisco, how to initiate and carry out change in a congregation, this is the book for you. -- Speed LeasGays and Grays tells the story of a colorful community of Catholic Christians that in theory cannot exist but which maintains a vibrant ministry in a community where it doesn't seem to fit. Donal Godfrey has given an important gift to all who care about congregations and their ability to adapt to changing communities. It belongs in the libraries of bishops, seminaries and students of congregational life in America across the usual lines of denomination and sexual orientation. -- William McKinney, President Emeritus, Pacific School of ReligionGays and Grays provides an excellent local history of Catholic culture and gay and lesbian issues. * Church History: Studies in Christianity and Culture *This book shows how a very ordinary parish has shown remarkable pastoral strength in very changed and often hard times. -- Fergus O'Donoghue S.J. * Studies 2008 *Donal Godfrey has wriitne a loving portrait. . . . This study is filled with surprising stories and everyday heroes. . . . Godfrey has written a sensitive study that gives ample material for reflection on what it means to be church. * American Catholic Studies, Fall 2008 *Those who love Most Holy Redeemer Parish, a group far more widespread than those lucky enough to be regular worshippers there, will be delighted to have this gem of a history. It chronicles how a 'run of the mill parish' became a globally-known mission outpost. More than that, MHR found itself, through dark decades, keeping alive the deep and tender hopes of many gay people and their straight friends and relatives that the Catholic institutional structure might one day catch up with the richest directions of its own Faith. And MHR did, and does, this by manifesting that what is theoretically impossible, a normally Catholic and normally gay life of faith, is not only possible, but appears to be especially blessed by the Holy Spirit. Donal Godfrey, a master in the art of letting many different voices speak, has given us more than a record of the warts-and-all history of the parish, lovingly researched and readably retold: he offers us a theological witness to the work of the One who makes all things new. -- James Alison, priest, theologian, and authorTable of ContentsChapter 1 The First Eighty Years Chapter 2 Fr Anthony McGuire Chapter 3 Bearing Witness in a Time of AIDS Chapter 4 Father Zachary Shore Chapter 5 A Queer Sanctuary?

Book SynopsisSomeone in your past sold you a false story about who you are and what you’re worth. It has been holding you back for too long. Take control of your future. A staggering one out of three women in America was a victim of sexual abuse at some point in her childhood. No matter how many years it’s been, if that’s your story, those scars are probably still with you. But even if that’s not part of your story, this book is for you. Women today have been groomed for a lot more than just sex.Using her own story of abuse, family tragedy, and rebellion, Elizabeth Melendez Fisher guides readers toward an understanding that grooming is oftentimes subtle, but it’s always life-altering. In Groomed Fisher incorporates the language and lessons gained over the past decade working with sex trafficking victims and her work in ministry and counseling before that. She draws out five specific ways that women have been grooTrade Review'Groomed is a captivating must-read for empowering women to take time to reflect on pervasive areas of our pasts and begin to step out and move beyond what we were groomed to be. As I read this book, I could feel the weight of my past lifting off. Elizabeth gives riveting, action-packed steps on how we can truly grasp a future full of freedom to be all we were created to be, walking stronger in the light of our new day.' --Valerie Ellery, international inspirational author, speaker, and human trafficking education specialist'Groomed is an amazingly bold and vulnerable look into the life of Elizabeth Melendez Fisher Good. In a powerful way Elizabeth allows us to enter her journey of pain with an incredible redemptive outcome. Lives will be changed as a result of her honesty. She has taken her tumultuous early years and turned them into a beautiful catalyst for good.' --Alan Smyth, Saving Innocence executive director'Groomed is an incredible, brave, and gorgeous book. It exposes, with loving wisdom, the spectrum of cruelties that do so much harm to so many while it also reveals the enduring capacity of love and truth, helping to lead people from victimization, through healing, and into a place where they can thrive. This book is not for the faint of heart but for anyone who wants to care more effectively for themselves or others; it has bountiful wisdom that will make the journey worth it.' --Kaethe Morris Hoffer, Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation executive director'Groomed provides both women and men with insights and observations to help them increase their self-knowledge. With that knowledge their eyes can be opened to the influences that have shaped their lives for good and for ill. With that knowledge choices can be made to restore their lives and strengthen relationships as they were meant to be.' --Quin Frazer, Drinker Biddle and amp; Reath LLP partner'Elizabeth Melendez Fisher Good allows us to witness a life full of secrets, survival, and resilience. Groomed is full of important information for those of us who want to enjoy the companionship of our best selves and those we serve in the world of social services.' --Dr. Stephanie Powell, Journey Out executive director; retired, Los Angeles Police Department'Elizabeth Melendez Fisher Good shines a bright light on practical steps anyone can implement to dispel the darkness from which they have become enslaved. The first step, Good says, is to make a conscious decision to identify the grooming. She then leads the way to break free from the story that has been penned. Freedom is a journey, not an event, and it begins with selah.' --Tamela J. Young, MACM, One Heart One Hope coach; Heart2Heart Sisterhood founder/director'I'm incredibly moved by how God has used Elizabeth's story. The parts Satan meant to use to destroy her, God has used for good. Elizabeth is a warrior and champion giving a voice to the voiceless. Groomed is yet another way of helping those who can't or don't know how to help themselves. I am of the firm belief that everyone who reads this book will benefit in some way!' --Cindy Pentecost, author, I Get to Prepare My Heart: A Christmas Devotional'In Groomed Elizabeth shares a raw, heart-wrenching story, digging deeply to save others--a vital education, a sad tale, and a miracle of truth. Stopping sex trafficking and helping young women thrive is only possible through the education this book provides. And, ultimately, the sad realization that it could have been any of us!' --Dina Bair Maher, WGN-TV, Chicago, anchor/reporter'In a world where women tend to define their worth by their appearance, often feel invisible, and frequently make decisions out of fear, the message of Groomed is desperately needed. Through her story, Elizabeth exposes the lies that groomed these destructive mind-sets in us and guides us to the truth of our true beauty, strength, and power. This book will change how you see yourself and other women, as Elizabeth shares solution-oriented insights with an authentic voice and great wisdom. She will inspire and equip you to live a life of purpose, satisfaction, and joy.' --Katherine Lee, Pure Hope Foundation founder and author, Interrupted'Never are the marginalized more exploited than in times of prosperity. The bounty of some often comes through the trauma of others. In the modern Western world, we seek entertainment and distraction to patch the void left unfilled by the comforts of our times. Groomed reveals in heartbreaking anecdote after heartbreaking anecdote what it means to 'come to oneself,' to see the image of God within our fellow human beings. Elizabeth weaves a poetic narrative that exemplifies her belief that as we respect God's temple (the bodies of others), we give honor to our own temples, thus living in communion with God and with one another.' --Steve Bynum, WBEZ, Chicago'This book is timely and speaks to all--male and female, young and old. Elizabeth's heart is poured into this book, not only to comfort the hurting but also to provide lifesaving help for those who have been hiding. Her personal story also offers guidance in recognizing those who need help. Groomed should be required reading for everyone in the counseling, teaching, health, and law enforcement fields.' --Mary Lou Johnson, licensed clinical family therapist and author/photographer, The Lure of Longboat Key: Sunrise to Sunset
