Book SynopsisGod made all men equal, and His divine spark animates every being He created. All men are equal, and yet there are chosen few whom we call ''Men of God''. Why are they special? What makes these men and women the chosen of the Lord? What makes us venerate them as saints, mahatmas and spiritual leaders? The answer is simple: they become chosen of the Lord because they chose the Lord above all else. They made bhakti, devotion, the foundation of their life. To whichever faith or denomination they belonged, they chose to do good to all. They chose truth, goodness, compassion, simplicity, service and sacrifice -- and attained an exalted status among men. In the Fourth Volume of this ongoing series, Dada JP Vaswani introduces to us a few more of these saintly souls, each one of them are guides and saviours of humanity. Himself a universalist and a great spiritual leader whose religion of love and unity transcends all narrow creeds, Rev. Peeters Publishers Church and Order: A Reformed Perspective
Book SynopsisChurch and order. A reformed perspective. are the Onclin lectures given at the Faculty of Canon Law in Leuven during February 1998. The first four chapters give a perspective on the fundamental principles of Reformed Church Government. Follows a discussion of what a Church Order as a document of order in the church is all about - its scope, its authority, its relationship to Holy Scripture etc. The last chapter is a reflection on how the rights of people can and should be protected in reformed churches - a burning issue in our day. The book is also an attempt to take note of canon law developments within the Roman Catholic Church and also to contribute to the dialogue between Rome and the churches of the reformation.

Peeters Publishers History of Vatican II: English Version Edited by
Book SynopsisThis third volume of the History of Vatican II describes the period during which the Second Vatican Council began to assume its mature and distinct character. With the succession of Pope Paul VI to Pope John XXIII the Council had a new head. With the revisions of texts accomplished during the firts intersession the council had a new agenda more in line with the desires of the majority that had emerged during the first period. With the appointment of four Moderators the Council had a new leadership. The volume describes the peculiar situation of Paul VI as a pope elected in the midst of an ecumenical council and the vision of the Council - and the Church - that he outlined in his opening speech, which was followed immediately by a consideration of the text on the Church. Both in this discussion and in the one that followed, on bishops, the issue of collegiality would be passionately debated. The Council also completed its work on the first two documents promulgated: the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy and the Declaration on the Communications Media. The ecumenical commitment of the Council became visible, not only in the discussion of a decree on ecumenism, but in the visit of Paul VI to the Holy Land. During the second intersession the work of the Council continued, the most important features of which were the beginnings of the liturgical reform, the revision of the major texts still to be considered or voted on, and a plan to reduce many other texts to simple sets of propositions that was designed to make it possible for the Council to end with the third period.

Peeters Publishers Mysterium Ecclesiae: Images of the Church and Its
Book SynopsisStarting-point of this book is that for Origen the object of religious knowledge is a mystery. Therefore he shrinks from using 'definitions', by which in his opinion the mystery is literally 'restricted'. This also applies to the Church. About her can only be spoken 'in a manner of speaking' and by means of images. The Bible itself leads the way in this respect. Therefore one must not stick to the literal meaning of the text, but one must try to understand it spiritually. Origen traces the meaning of the biblical images of the Church. Sometimes he elaborates them or puts them in a new context. But he also creates new images to describe the Church and already detects in the Old Testament all kinds of types of the Church. Analyzing all these images the author gives insight in Origen's ecclesiology.

Peeters Publishers Decently and in Order: A Theological Reflection
Book SynopsisNo Church can evade the issue of an order in the church and no theology can evade the question of what to do with the pronouncements in Holy Scripture that have to do with order in the church. What does a church and a theology do with the clear pronouncement that Jesus Christ is the Lord and Head of the church, His Body? A"Decently and in OrderA" reflects on the matter of an order in and an order for the Church. A set of methodological beacons are identified that can be helpful in the scientific study of church law and the everyday practice of church government. In this process dialogue is taken up with various theologies, theologians, church jurists and denominations. Chapters are also dedicated to the position of church law in the theological encyclopaedia, the sources for church law and church government, what a Church Order is and the History of Church Law and Church Government.

Peeters Publishers History of Vatican II: v. 5: Council and the
Book SynopsisIn the 40th year after the close of the second Vatican Council, here is the final volume of its most definitive history. "History of Vatican II, Volume V" takes the reader through the approval of texts such as the "Constitution on Divine Revelation," the "Decree on Religious Liberty," the "Decree on the Church's Missionary Activity" and the "Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World."Reconstructing and commenting on the final session and the transition to a post-Conciliar world Volume V includes chapters on the critical period between the third and fourth sessions by Giovanni Turbanti and the beginning of the fourth session by Gilles Routhier. The third chapter by Mauro Velati deals with events that settled how the fourth session would approve key texts, and the fourth chapter by Christophe Theobald reveals how "the Church under the Word of God" came to be the central focus of Vatican II Theology. Chapters by Peter Hunermann, Lukas Vischer, and Giuseppe Alberigo tell the story of the final days, interpret the Council as an ecumenical event, and show how the reception of the Council's work by the Church at large foreshadows the struggles over the meaning of the Council that continue to this day.An unprecedented and unsurpassed effort of international scholars, "History of Vatican II", will remain a key resource for historians, theologians, and religious professionals for years to come.

Peeters Publishers Priests and Prophets Among Pagans, Jews and
Book SynopsisThe emperor Julian pointed out that the duties of priesthood were better understood among 'the impious Galileans' (i.e. Christians) than among his pagan contemporaries. Like the emperor, the essays in this volume look in both directions. Its pages are populated by very diverse figures: Plutach, Aelius Aristides, Alexander of Abonouteichos, Daniel the Stylite, Gregory of Nazianzus, Shenoute of Atripe, Mani, Muhammad, and a host of anonymous Greek and Roman priests, prophets, and diviners. The priests of second temple Judaism are considered too. Both in the Greco-Roman and the early Christian worlds the neat division between priests and prophets proves hard to sustain. But in terms of fame and influence a strong contrast emerges between Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian prophets; this is why it is only among Jews and Christians that 'false prophets' are feared. Two recurrent preoccupations are the relation of priests and prophets to secular power, and the priest/prophet not as reality but as idea, an imagined figure. Leading scholars of the religions of antiquity come together in this wide-ranging and innovative volume.

Peeters Publishers Challenges of Moral Leadership
Book SynopsisWhat is it about leadership that makes being a moral leader such a challenge? Why do leaders typically make the same mistakes over and over again, throughout history, across cultures and over time? How do expectations of heroic leadership impact a leader's moral integrity? How do followers contribute to (or undermine) a robust ethical stance of their leaders? This volume addresses these and other questions from a variety of interdisciplinary, practitioner and faith perspectives. It contains, for example, a historical account of leadership challenges, an engagement with the responsibility ethics of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and a contextual study of the specific challenges of ethical leadership in Russia. This second volume of the series Christian Perspectives on Leadership and Social Ethics, published by the Institute of Leadership and Ethics, of the Evangelische Theologische Faculteit in Leuven (Belgium), serves leaders to face an increasingly complex reality.

Peeters Publishers History of Vatican II: English Version Edited by
Book SynopsisThis second volume of The History of Vatican II describes the dramatic first session of the Council as it was electrified by Pope John XXIII's inspiring and liberating speech. It tells the story of how the bishops repudiated the doctrinal texts they had been expected to rubber stamp and gave overwhelming approval of the call to reform the church. Volume II describes the main protagonists, the issues at stake in the debates, and the gradual emergence and triumph of the desire for spiritual renewal and pastoral reform. It concludes with a study of the Council's agenda, an agenda that permitted this desire to become effective in subsequent sessions. In the pages of The Formation of the Council's Identity, such important ecclesiastical personages as the Cardinals Siri of Genoa and Suenens - virtual polar opposites on questions of aggiornamento - and soon-to-be famous periti such as Ives Congar, Hans Kung, and Karl Rahner make their appearances. The mood of the conservatives was one of trepidation in the face of unknown possibilites; the mood of the progressives a mixture of gloom and apprehension in the face of reactionary legalistic preparatory documents and commissions. In the midst of such contradictory expectations, John XXIII injected something completely unexpected in his "moonlight address" on the evening the Council opened. His deep humanity impressed itself upon the Council delegates and the world at large. Chapters include a preface by G. Alberigo; (1) "The Dramatic Opening Days" by A. Ricardi; (2) "The Council Gets Underway" by G.P. Fogarty; (3) "The Debate on the Liturgy" by M. Lamberigts; (4) "A Portrait of the Assembly" by H. Raguer; (5) "The Clash over Divine Revelation" by G. Ruggieri; (6) "The Brief Debate on Communications Media" by M. Lamberigts; (7) "Beyond an Ecclesiology of Polemics; The Debate on the Church" by G. Ruggieri; (8) "The Second Preparation of the Council during the Intersession" by J. Grootaers; (9) "Ebb and Flow: Conciliar Dynamics during the Intersession" by J. Grootaers; and (10) "The Conciliar Experience" by G. Alberigo.

Amsterdam University Press Isidore of Seville and his Reception in the Early
Book SynopsisIsidore of Seville (560—636) was a crucial figure in the preservation and sharing of classical and early Christian knowledge. His compilations of the works of earlier authorities formed an essential part of monastic education for centuries. Due to the vast amount of information he gathered and its wide dissemination in the Middle Ages, Pope John Paul II even named Isidore the patron saint of the Internet in 1997. This volume represents a cross section of the various approaches scholars have taken toward Isidore’s writings. The essays explore his sources, how he selected and arranged them for posterity, and how his legacy was reflected in later generations’ work across the early medieval West. Rich in archival detail, this collection provides a wealth of interdisciplinary expertise on one of history’s greatest intellectuals.Trade Review"A splendid survey of Isidore’s legacy in early medieval Europe. ... [the chapters] furnish us with resourceful intellectual, cultural, and historical frameworks for thinking about Isidore, especially in terms of his usage and currency." - Eric Lacey and Simon Thomson, The Year's Work in English Studies, Volume 98, Issue 1, 2019 "This book gathers a very complete range of topics regarding Isidore in light of recent bibliography and research. It is, in short, a magnificent update for Isidorian studies of any kind." - Ana-Isabel Magallón, University of Zaragoza, Speculum 94/1 (January 2019) "Anglophone scholars whose work involves Isidore (e.g. any Anglo-Saxonist) will find this volume useful for its insights into Isidore specifically and medieval transmission of knowledge more generally; its massive bibliographies will also prove invaluable to those for whom Isidore's work forms an important, if taken for granted, component of their own specialties." - Hilary E. The American University in Cairo Press The Early Coptic Papacy: The Egyptian Church and
Book SynopsisThe Copts, adherents of the Egyptian Orthodox Church, today represent the largest Christian community in the Middle East, and their presiding bishops have been accorded the title of pope since the third century AD. This study analyzes the development of the Egyptian papacy from its origins to the rise of Islam. How did the papal office in Egypt evolve as a social and religious institution during the first six and a half centuries AD? How do the developments in the Alexandrian patriarchate reflect larger developments in the Egyptian church as a whole-in its structures of authority and lines of communication, as well as in its social and religious practices? In addressing such questions, Stephen J. Davis examines a wide range of evidence-letters, sermons, theological treatises, and church histories, as well as art, artifacts, and archaeological remains-to discover what the patriarchs did as leaders, how their leadership was represented in public discourses, and how those representations definitively shaped Egyptian Christian identity in late antiquity. The Early Coptic Papacy is Volume 1 of The Popes of Egypt: A History of the Coptic Church and Its Patriarchs. Also available: Volume 2, The Coptic Papacy in Islamic Egypt, 641-1517 (Mark N. Swanson) and Volume 3, The Emergence of the Modern Coptic Papacy (Magdi Girgis, Nelly van Doorn-Harder).Trade Review"Recommended for any collection on Eastern Christian Churches."--curled up with a good book"Substantiates the Coptic Church as a subject in religious studies with its own history worthy of study."--Midwest Book Review"This innovative and authoritative book goes beyond the basic facts to show how the early patriarchs of the Coptic church crafted their images and constructed their authority. Essential reading for historians of ancient Christianity and for all scholars of Coptic Egypt."--David Brakke, Ohio State University"A lucid, meticulous, and highly accessible account of papal institutions in early Egyptian Christianity. Not only does Davis juggle an impressive collection of primary documents, with great mastery and finesse, but his approach also reveals how critical events surrounding the early papacy--from political intrigue to theological feuds--shaped Coptic understandings of Christology, martyrdom, communal leadership, and conquest. A critical read for any student of Christianity in Egypt and the Middle East."--Febe Armanios, author of Coptic Christianity in Ottoman Egypt

Information Age Publishing Strategy in His Image: Supporting and Sustaining
Book SynopsisThis book is intended to contribute model bases on a faith-inspired, biblically based perspective that is consistent with the needs of strategicorganizational leadership. We address the spiritual leadership and spirituality at work literature from a Christian perspective. We argue that it is critical for organizations to reconcile workplace spirituality with strategic thinking and business operations because religious identity is still very important in the United States, and we present a model to accomplish this reconciliation. While we are not theologians, in presenting our model we do engage in the theological discussion of the relationship between man and God particularly in the context of business. While we review the evolution of the spiritual leadership and spirituality at work literature along with the limited literature that examines these concepts from a Christian perspective, we identify significant obstacles that have thus far kept these concepts on the fringes of general management thinking and practices. After identifying the challenges associated with a Christian approach to the spirituality literature, we offer a model with four principles for Strategic Spirituality based on a Christian perspective of biblical interpretations that also offer the requisite pragmatism for strategic thinking and organizational implementation. The four principles include: 1. Subsidiarity with Solidarity – Subsidiarity is a principle of decentralization coming for the Catholic social tradition whereby decision-making done at the organizational level with the greatest familiarity and the individual empowerment and is moderated by solidarity or a unity of common mission. 2. Stewardship – requires resources and opportunities be dutifully managed in order to promote sustainability and social well-being. 3. Support and Empowerment – relates to the creation of an organization with Christian principles where Christian and Non-Christians are supported and empowered for individual growth and organizational success. 4. Synergy – allows organizations to remain focused on their ideals but flexible in their implementation.
