Taylor & Francis Inc Saints as Intercessors between the Wealthy and
Book SynopsisOffering snapshots of mercantile devotion to saints in different regions, this volume is the first to ask explicitly how merchants invoked saints, and why. Despite medieval and modern stereotypes of merchants as godless and avaricious, medieval traders were highly devout and rightly so. Overseas trade was dangerous, and merchants' commercial activities were seen as jeopardizing their souls. Merchants turned to saints for protection and succor, identifying those most likely to preserve their goods, families, reputations, and souls. The essays in this collection, written from diverse angles, range across later medieval western Europe, from Spain to Italy to England and the Hanseatic League. They offer a multi-disciplinary examination of the ways that medieval merchants, from petty traders to influential overseas wholesalers, deployed the cults of saints. Three primary themes are addressed: danger, community, and the unity of spiritual and cultural capital. Taylor & Francis Ltd Muslim Devotional Art in India
Book SynopsisThis book highlights the history of Islamic popular devotional art and visual culture in 20th-century India, weaving the personal narrative of the author's journey through his understanding of the faith. It begins with an introductory exploration of how the basic and universal image of Mecca and Medina may have been imported into Indian popular print culture and what variants it resulted in here. Besides providing a historical context of the pre-print culture of popular Muslim visuality, the book also explores the impact the 1947 Partition of India may have made on the calendar art in South Asia. A significant portion of the book focuses on the contemporary prints of different localised images found in India and what role these play in the users' lives, especially in the augmentation of their popular faith and cultural practices. The volume also compares the images published in India with some of those available in Pakistan to reflect different socio-political trajectories. Finally,Trade Review‘The breadth of coverage of issues related to Muslim popular visual culture . . . for insights, as well as the extraordinarily rich collection of images that will serve as a comprehensive reference for many years to come, this book is highly recommended to scholars and other readers alike.’Sandria Freitag, Indian Economic Social History Review ‘Saeed takes us on a journey throughout India, where we encounter visual art [in Islam] in the form of calligraphy, chromolithographs of Sufi saints, architecture, items of clothing, and ritual paraphernalia in abundance, especially within and around the compounds of the many dargahs that dot the landscape of India.’Frank J. Korom, Religious Studies Review‘Yousuf Saeed’s delightful book provides readers with a rare glimpse into the visual culture of Muslim communities in South Asia. Drawing on the author’s personal experiences and extensive research, it sensitively explores diverse aspects of Muslim devotional life through a vivid and vibrant tradition of popular art. Masterfully narrated and beautifully illustrated, this unique book is "a must read" for anyone interested in the popular religion of South Asia.’Ali Asani, Professor of Indo-Muslim and Islamic Religion and Cultures, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA‘In this welcome volume, Yousuf Saeed surveys significant examples of the colourful lithographs and other images that form a part of the devotional experience of many Indian Muslims. The work is historical, with attention to the importance of technological innovations in photography, print and transportation. It also takes into account central themes in cultural and political history, including the impact of Partition, and devotional and reformist currents that alternately encouraged and disapproved of many of these images. This is a vivid account on a sTable of ContentsIntroduction: The Duller the Better 1. The Image of Mecca in India 2. The Popular Culture of Indian Muslims Before Print 3. Rowman & Littlefield Seeking Goodness and Beauty The Use of the Arts
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewPatricia Lamoureux and Kevin O'Neil have edited a splendid volume of essays that probe the intersections of theological ethics and art and the relationship between morality and aesthetics. In the broader field of theology and the arts, this work will make a major contribution to understanding the role of the arts in the shaping of the moral life. Autobiography, film, music, the visual arts, literature are all explored in terms of their power to speak to us about grace and hope, mystery and brokenness, conscience and moral character. This is an excellent addition to the literature of theology and the arts and should be of special importance to those teaching in theology, religious studies, the arts and those in ministry. -- Wilson Yates, President, United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities and Professor of Religion, Society and the ArtsTeachers of ethics or moral theology will need little convincing of the potential for art and beauty to engage students effectively and to aid in transforming an academic study into a means of personal moral formation. More difficult is the question of exactly how it can be done. In Seeking Goodness and Beauty, successful teachers of theology and ethics share insights on the use and potential misuse of the arts in the pedagogy of morality. Several essays give a general perspective on the ways in which the arts, especially in their narrative forms, can function in focusing moral attention, sharpening conscience, and exemplifying moral attitudes. Rather than methodological principles or formulas, they provide concrete illustrations of the use of the arts in correlation to moral knowledge and formation. These essays, rich in practical wisdom drawn from wide and varied experience, should provide inspiration and insight not only to ethicians but also to teachers of theology and even to preachers. -- Richard R. Viladesau, Professor of Theology, Associate Chair of Graduate Studies at Fordham UniversitySeeking Goodness and Beauty is a finely-crafted book that will inform and delight many readers. Brimming with insights and practical ideas for the classroom, it offers a rich set of examples that show how attention to fiction, autobiography, film, and music can impact the teaching of ethics in profound and powerful ways. -- Anne E. Getty Trust Publications Sacred Possessions - Collecting Italian Religious
Book SynopsisThis is a brief history of and investigation into the collecting of sacred art. When works of art created for religious purposes outlive their original function, they often take on new meanings as they move from sacred spaces to secular collections. Focusing on the centuries in which the phenomenon of collecting came powerfully into its own, the fourteen essays presented here analyze the radical recontextualization of celebrated paintings by Raphael, Caravaggio, and Rubens; brings to light a lost holy tower from fifteenth-century Bavaria; and offers new insights into the meaning of 'sacred' and 'profane'. Collecting represents the primary mechanism by which a sacred work of art survives when it is alienated from its original context. In the field of art history, the consequences of such collecting - its tendency to reframe an object, metaphorically and physically - have only begun to be investigated. "Sacred Possessions" charts the contours of a fertile terrain for further inquiry.

University of Massachusetts Press Shaker Vision: Seeing Beauty in Early America
Book SynopsisThe Shakers are known for self-denial and austerity in everyday living and their material world, as embodied by the heavenly simplicity and purity of their chairs and blanket chests. Yet the believers also enjoyed a diversity of visual pleasures, from flowers, sunSets, rainbows, and the northern lights as seen at home to waterfalls, ocean waves, and dramatic cliffs viewed while traveling across America. In Shaker Vision, Joseph Manca explores original texts, especially diaries and travel journals, and material culture to demonstrate that Shakers enjoyed a remarkably deep experience of the visual world. Shakers shared tastes with mainstream Americans and often employed a similar aesthetic vocabulary, but all within a belief system that made them distinct. In addition to their well-known ascetic architecture, furniture, and handicraft styles, they expressed themselves through ornate and detailed spiritual art and in vivid, visionary experiences. Based on firsthand accounts of the believers themselves, this richly illustrated volume will dramatically change how we assess the visual world of this uniquely American religious sect.

Bucknell University Press,U.S. 1650-1850: Ideas, Aesthetics, and Inquiries in
Book SynopsisWith issue twenty-four of 1650–1850, this annual enters its second quarter-century with a new publisher, a new look, a new editorial board, and a new commitment to intellectual and artistic exploration. As the diversely inventive essays in this first issue from the Bucknell University Press demonstrate, the energy and open-mindedness that made 1650–1850 a success continue to intensify. This first Bucknell issue includes a special feature that explores the use of sacred space in what was once incautiously called “the age of reason.” A suite of book reviews renews the 1650–1850 legacy of full-length and unbridled evaluation of the best in contemporary Enlightenment scholarship. These lively and informative reviews celebrate the many years that book review editor Baerbel Czennia has served 1650–1850 and also make for an able handoff to Samara Anne Cahill of Nanyang Technological University, who will edit the book review section beginning with our next volume. Most important of all, this issue serves as an invitation to scholars to offer their most creative and thoughtful work for consideration for publication in 1650–1850. About the annual journal 1650-18501650-1850 publishes essays and reviews from and about a wide range of academic disciplines—literature (both in English and other languages), philosophy, art history, history, religion, and science. Interdisciplinary in scope and approach, 1650-1850 emphasizes aesthetic manifestations and applications of ideas, and encourages studies that move between the arts and the sciences—between the “hard” and the “humane” disciplines. The editors encourage proposals for “special features” that bring together five to seven essays on focused themes within its historical range, from the Interregnum to the end of the first generation of Romantic writers. While also being open to more specialized or particular studies that match up with the general themes and goals of the journal, 1650-1850 is in the first instance a journal about the artful presentation of ideas that welcomes good writing from its contributors.First published in 1994, 1650-1850 is currently in its 24th volume.ISSN 1065-3112.Published by Bucknell University Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.Trade Review"Scholarly communities, especially those joined in eighteenth-century studies, can raise a shout (or glass) over the prospect of the annual 1650-1850’s future publication by Bucknell University Press. This will provide us with regular publication and broader distribution of the journal Kevin Cope has so impressively edited for over 20 years. With contributions from around the world, 1650-1850 has long been providing essays focused on fields as diverse as art and philosophy and others truly inter-disciplinary. It has carried many special issues on topics like 'Death and Dying in the Early Modern Era.' It has also distinguished itself by including lengthy essays and reviews. While 1650-1850 has always been an important annual for seventeenth-, eighteenth-, and nineteenth-century studies, its temporal focus is all the more valuable now that so much exciting research is being produced." -- James E. May * editor, 18th-Century Intelligencer, Pennsylvania State University, Dubois *"For more than two decades, 1650-1850 has offered its readers an inspiring example of what a scholarly annual concentrating on interdisciplinary and international topics can be. The work of seasoned scholars appears alongside that of 'mid-career' scholars and newly-minted PhDs, creating a heady variety of approaches and subject matter in every volume. The articles, the reviews, the 'special features,' and even the occasional 'Editor’s Choice' on underappreciated books always advance knowledge in large and small ways. Equally important, each contribution is typically written with verve and allusive pluckiness. There has never been anything doctrinaire about 1650-1850, other than an energy to display compelling new work to its best advantage. That Bucknell University Press has committed itself to this exciting annual is a cause for celebration." -- J.T.
