  • Etruscan Myth, Sacred History, and Legend

University of Pennsylvania Press Etruscan Myth, Sacred History, and Legend

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis volume is the first comprehensive account of Etruscan mythology, an elusive and difficult subject because no Etruscan textual narratives have survived from antiquity. In order to interpret the myths and make the Etruscans come alive for us today, Nancy Thomson de Grummond acts as an archaeological detective piecing together evidence from representations in art, from archaeological sites, and from indirect accounts of Etruscan lore in Greek and Roman texts. She starts with the purely Etruscan material, beginning with their stories of the prophets and ending with their very particular view of the underworld. She probes the relationship between myth and ritual, as well as what myth reveals of Etruscan attitudes about politics and in particular about their society, as well as statements about gender and the human body made through myth and art. Specific topics include an overview of the Etruscan geographical setting; a review of questions of origins and of general Etruscan chronology, especially as it relates to the development of myth; our written sources, with a short discussion about what is known of the Etruscan language (largely through inscriptions), and the media in art that are most useful for the study of Etruscan myth, especially engraved bronze mirrors. Annotated representations in art and of other evidence from archaeology illuminate Etruscan mythology, and an appendix essay on studying Etruscan mythology lays out the history of the study of Etruscan myth and the principal publications on the subject. Authorities and students involved with front-line research on the Etruscans, classicists who study and teach the mythology of ancient Greece and Italy, and scholars of world myth interested not only in the comparanda but also in the methodology for studying myth without the illumination of local written narrative will benefit from this book. • Principles of Faith

Liverpool University Press Principles of Faith

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisMoses Maimonides was the first medieval Jewish thinker to posit a set of dogmas for Judaism, his ‘Thirteen Principles of Faith’. His statement initiated an extensive discussion among other medieval Jewish thinkers on the subject of dogma, which had an important impact on subsequent Jewish thought. The reaction to Maimonides’ innovation was complex: some scholars accepted his position without reservation; others accepted the idea that Jewish beliefs could be reduced to a creed but disagreed with Maimonides’ formulation; still others rejected the project of creed formulation in Judaism altogether. The locus classicus of this last position is the Rosh Amanah of Isaac Abranavel (1437–1508). Abravanel’s ostensible aim in writing Rosh Amanah was to defend Maimonides’ creed from the attacks of its critics, notably Hasdai Crescas and Joseph Albo, and it contains the most exhaustive and systematic analysis of the Thirteen Principles ever written. After twenty-two chapters of sustained and zealous defence of Maimonides, however, Abravanel seems to contradict himself, arguing at the end of his book that in fact Judaism has no dogmas whatsoever and that all its beliefs are equally valid, fundamental, and precious. This is the first complete English translation of Abravanel’s classic work, and includes a comprehensive introduction and notes.Table of ContentsList of tables Note on the text and translation Acknowledgements Introduction Principles of Faith (Rosh Amanah) Abravanel's Table of Contents: A List of the Chapters in This Treatise Table I Table II Notes Bibliography Biblical Passages Appearing in the text Rabbinic Passages Appearing in or Referred to in the text Index

Book SynopsisThe eagerly awaited Complete Works of Sangharakshita begins with Volume 9 on Dr Ambedkar and the revival of Buddhism. One of the most far-reaching of Sangharakshita's contributions to modern Buddhism was giving shape to the Buddhist conversion movement begun by the great Indian statesman and reformer, Dr B.R. Ambedkar. In 1956, along with hundreds of thousands of his followers, Ambedkar renounced the Hindu caste system - according to which they were condemned to be 'untouchable' - and converted to Buddhism, thus beginning a new life. The first part of this volume tells the story of how Ambedkar overcame the suffering and struggle of his early years to become the shaper of the Indian constitution and the leader of his people to a new life; and how, following Ambedkar's untimely death, Sangharakshita took on the challenge of teaching Buddhism to the new community of Buddhists. The second part is a collection of 36 edited talks, many published here for the first time, from Sangharakshita's tour of the Buddhist communities in India in 1981-2. Book SynopsisFor Buddhists everywhere, the Three Jewels - the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha - are at the heart of daily life and practice. But how can we engage with these precious ideals in a way that makes a difference to how we live? In this, the companion volume to The Three Jewels I, in which the nature of Going for Refuge to the Three Jewels is explored, are gathered three much-loved books: Who is the Buddha?, What is the Dharma?, and What is the Sangha? In this volume, Sangharakshita tackles a great range of subjects, offering original and imaginative perspectives on all the topics one might expect an introduction to Buddhism to cover - karma and rebirth, Nirvana and the spiral path, and the nature of Buddhahood itself, as well as clear and pragmatic guidance on matters of personal concern, such as individuality, fidelity, gratitude, parenthood and seeking a spiritual teacher. The teachings are underpinned by many references to the Pali canon and other sources, to provide an authentic guide to the Dharma life in all its aspects, and much encouragement and inspiration to live that life to the full.Trade Review'I have always looked to Sangharakshita's books for inspiration and ideas on how to better translate the principles and practices of Buddhism for Western audiences and practitioners today.' - Lama Surya Das, author of Awakening the Buddha WithinTable of ContentsWho is the Buddha?1 The Evolution of a Buddha2 The Way to Enlightenment3 The Hidden Teachings of the Buddha's Early Life4 The Heroic Ideal in Buddhism5 From Hero-Worship to the Worshipping Buddha6 The Word of the Buddha7 Karma and Rebirth8 The 'Death' of the Buddha9 Who is the Buddha? What is the Dharma?Part 1 The Truth1 The Essential Truth2 The Dynamics of Being3 The Texture of Reality4 Nirvana5 The Mystery of the VoidPart 2 The Path6 The Gravitational Pull and the Point of No Return7 The Spiral Path8 The Journey to Enlightenment9 The Pattern of Buddhist Life and Work10 The Threefold Way - Ethics11 The Threefold Way - Meditation12 The Threefold Way - Wisdom13 The Cosmic Significance of the Bodhisattva IdealWhat is the Sangha?Part 1 The Group and the Spiritual CommunityIntroduction1 The Sangha Jewel2 The Traditional Sangha3 Individuality: The Essence of Sangha4 The History of the Spiritual Community5 The Group and the Spiritual Community6 Authority7 The Positive Group and the New Society8 The Path of DissatisfactionPart 2 The True IndividualIntroduction9 The Evolution of the Individual10 The Integrated Individual11 Overcoming the Self12 The Artist as the True IndividualPart 3 The Network of Personal RelationshipsIntroduction13 Being a Buddhist Parent14 Is a Guru Necessary15 Fidelity16 The Meaning of Friendship17 Buddhism and Business Relationships18 Non-exploitation19 GratitudeConclusions: Can the Spiritual Community Save the World?20 A Buddhist View of Current World Problems21 Buddhism and Western Society

This little book provides us with an answer. Collected here are Mother Teresa's favourite prayers; many written by herself, others which she and the Sisters of Charity used on a daily basis. Together they provide an intimate and rare portrait of a modern day saint for whom work and prayer were inseparable. Her days began and ended with prayer, and every activity was rooted in attentive listening to God. Mother Teresa's Prayer Book is therefore the ideal daily spiritual companion for all who are seeking to know and do God's will.

Book SynopsisThe Benedictine monk John Main is acclaimed as one of the great spiritual teachers of the 20th century, restoring to the Church its historic contemplative dimension and opening up the monastic tradition to men and women living in the world. His teachings still continue to lead people in the way of silence, stillness and simplicity which are so much needed in our modern world. Here he opens up deeper insights into the kind of prayer that enables us to bring the whole of our being to God, and to let the power released into the world by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus flow through our hearts and into the world.

Rudolf Steiner Press The Druids, The: Esoteric Wisdom of the Ancient

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe wisdom contained in this book is not derived via the usual methods of scholarly and historical research, and neither is it based on theory or speculation. Rudolf Steiner acquired his original contribution to human knowledge from metaphysical dimensions of reality which are hidden to most people – but visible to anybody who is prepared to develop spiritual means of perception. With his philosophical and scientific training, Steiner brought a new systematic discipline to the field of spiritual research, allowing for fully conscious methods and comprehensive results. A natural seer, he cultivated his spiritual vision to a high degree, enabling him to speak with authority on previously veiled mysteries. Samples of his work are to be found in this book of edited texts, which brings together excerpts from his many talks and writings on the subject of the Druids. This volume also features an editorial introduction, commentary and notes by Dr Andrew Welburn. Chapters: The Sun Initiation of the Druid Priests and their Moon Science; The Mysteries of Ancient Ireland; Celtic Christianity – the Heritage of the Druids; Teachings of the Mysteries – the Spirit in Nature; The Great Mysteries – the Mystery of Christ; The Function of the Standing Stones; Spiritual Imaginations.

Book SynopsisFor years J John and Mark Stibbe have recorded the most offbeat, shrewd and hard-hitting material they have come across in the course of their study and travel. With remarkable generosity they have agreed to share this selection with the rest of us. There's a new diet that is all the rage. You can eat all you see of everything you don't like. On the sixth day, God created the platypus. And God said : "Let's see the evolutionists try and figure this one out." Advice to fathers over 40: keep an open mind and a closed refrigerator. We do not stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing. There's a new remedy on the market for baldness.
